Recent Results from Polycrystalline CVD Diamond Detectors

Diamond is a material in use at many nuclear and high energy facilities due to its inherent radiation tolerance and ease of use. We have characterized detectors based on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond before and after proton irradiation. We present preliminary results of the spatial resolution of unirradiated and irradiated CVD diamond strip sensors. In addition, we measured the pulse height versus particle rate of unirradiated and irradiated polycrystalline CVD (pCVD) diamond pad detectors up to a particle flux of $20\,\mathrm{MHz/cm^2}$ and a fluence up to $4 \times 10^{15}\,n/\mathrm{cm^2}$.

The new radiation-hard optical links for the ATLAS pixel detector

The ATLAS detector is currently being upgraded with a new layer of pixel based charged particle tracking and a new arrangement of the services for the pixel detector. These upgrades require the replacement of the opto-boards previously used by the pixel detector. In this report we give details on the design and production of the new opto-boards.

Optical Link ASICs for the LHC Upgrade

We have designed three ASICs for possible applications in the optical links of a new layer of pixel detector in the ATLAS experiment for the first phase of the LHC luminosity upgrade. The ASICs include a high-speed driver for the VCSEL, a receiver/decoder to decode the signal received at the PIN diode to extract the data and clock, and a clock multiplier to produce a higher frequency clock to serialize the data for transmission. These ASICs were designed using a 130 nm CMOS process to enhance the radiation-hardness. We have characterized the fabricated ASICs and the submission has been mostly successful. We irradiated the ASICs with 24 GeV/c protons at CERN to a dosage of 70 Mrad. We observed no significant degradation except the driver circuit in the VCSEL driver fabricated using the thick oxide process in order to provide sufficient voltage to drive a VCSEL. The degradation is due to a large threshold shifts in the PMOS transistors used.

Study of the Radiation Hardness of Vcsel and Pin Arrays

The silicon trackers of the ATLAS experiment at LHC (CERN) use optical links for data transmission. VCSEL arrays operating at 850 nm are used to transmit optical signals while PIN arrays are used to convert the optical signals into electrical signals. We investigate the feasibility of using the devices at the Super LHC (SLHC). We irradiated VCSEL and GaAs PIN arrays from three vendors and silicon PIN arrays from one vendor. All arrays can be operated up to the SLHC dosage except the GaAs PIN arrays which have very low responsivities after irradiation and hence are probably not suitable for the SLHC application.

Radiation-Hard Optical Link for SLHC

We study the feasibility of fabricating an optical link for the SLHC ATLAS silicon tracker based on the current pixel optical link architecture. The electrical signals between the current pixel modules and the optical modules are transmitted via micro-twisted cables. The optical signals between the optical modules and the data acquisition system are transmitted via radiation-hard/low-bandwidth SIMM fibres fusion spliced to radiation-tolerant/medium-bandwidth GRIN fibres. The link has several nice features. We have measured the bandwidths of the micro twisted-pair cables to be ~ 1 Gb/s and the fusion spliced fibre ribbon to be ~ 2 Gb/s. We have irradiated PIN and VCSEL arrays with 24 GeV protons and find the arrays can operate up to the SLHC dosage. We have also demonstrated the feasibility of fabricating a novel opto-pack for housing VCSEL and PIN arrays with BeO as the substrate.

Alignment of the Pixel and SCT Modules for the 2004 ATLAS Combined Test Beam

A small set of final prototypes of the ATLAS Inner Detector silicon tracker (Pixel and SCT) were used to take data during the 2004 Combined Test Beam. Data were collected from runs with beams of different flavour (electrons, pions, muons and photons) with a momentum range of 2 to 180 GeV/c. Four independent methods were used to align the silicon modules. The corrections obtained were validated using the known momenta of the beam particles and were shown to yield consistent results among the different alignment approaches. From the residual distributions, it is concluded that the precision attained in the alignment of the silicon modules is of the order of 5 micrometers in their most precise coordinate.

Optical Link of the Atlas Pixel Detector

The on-detector optical link of the ATLAS pixel detector contains radiation-hard receiver chips to decode bi-phase marked signals received on PIN arrays and data transmitter chips to drive VCSEL arrays. The components are mounted on hybrid boards (opto-boards). We present results from the irradiation studies with 24 GeV protons up to 32 Mrad (1.2 x 10^15 p/cm^2) and the experience from the production.

ATLAS Pixel Opto-Electronics

We have developed two radiation-hard ASICs for optical data transmission in the ATLAS pixel detector at the LHC at CERN: a driver chip for a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) diode for 80 Mbit/s data transmission from the detector, and a Bi-Phase Mark decoder chip to recover the control data and 40 MHz clock received optically by a PIN diode. We have successfully implemented both ASICs in 0.25 micron CMOS technology using enclosed layout transistors and guard rings for increased radiation hardness. We present results of the performance of these chips, including irradiation with 24 GeV protons up to 61 Mrad (2.3 x 10e15 p/cm^2).

New Results on Tau Lepton

This is a review of new results on the Tau lepton. The lifetime has been measured with improved precision, allowing the test of lepton universality to 0.2% level. There are several new measurements of the branching ratios for the hadronic decays, including much improved measurements for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays. All results are consistent with the Standard Model expectations.

An MT-Style Optical Package for Optical Data Transmission

An optical package for mounting VCSEL and PIN diodes for transmitting and receiving optical signals has been developed. The diodes couple to the fibers in a commercial MT connector. The package is quite compact with its physical size significantly smaller than that of the MT connector. This design simplifies the testing and assembly of the optical components because the MT connector with the long fibers attached can be remounted with ease while preserving good light coupling efficiency.

Search for Neutrinoless Tau Decays Involving the K0 Meson

We have searched for lepton flavor violating decays of the tau lepton with one or two KS0 mesons in the final state. The data used in the search were collected with the CLEO II and II.V detectors at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 13.9 fb^-1 at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. No evidence for signals were found, therefore we have set 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits on the branching fractions B(tau -> e KS0) < 9.1e-7, B(tau -> muKS0) < 9.5e-7, B(tau -> e 2KS0) < 2.2e-6, and B(tau -> mu 2KS0) < 3.4e-6. These represent significantly improved upper limits on the two-body decays and first upper limits on the three-body decays.

New CLEO II Results on Charm Hadron Decays

We present new results on charm hadron decays from the CLEO II experiment. The D*+ width is measured for the first time, Gamma(D*+) = 96 +- 4 +- 22 keV. The semileptonic decay branching fractions are determined to be B(D+ --> Kbar*0 e+ nu_e) = (6.7 +- 0.4 +- 0.5 +- 0.4)% and B(D+ --> Kbar*0 mu+ nu_mu) = (6.5 +- 0.9 +- 0.5 +- 0.4)%. We observe evidence for Omega_c --> Omega- e+ nu_e and measure the product of the branching fraction and cross section, B(Omega_c --> Omega- e+ nu_e) x sigma(e+e- --> Omega_cX) = 42.2 +- 14.1 +- 11.9 fb. Within the framework of Heavy Quark Effective Theory, we measure in the decay Lambda+_c --> Lambda e+ nu_e the form factor ratio, R = f_2/f_1 = -0.31 +- 0.06 +- 0.06. This provides strong evidence that the form factor f_2 describing spin interactionof the s quark is non-zero. The Xi+_c lifetime is measured to be 503 +- 47 +- 18 fs. The results on branching fractions, cross section, and form factor ratio are preliminary.
