Observation of structures at $\sim 17$ and $\sim 38$ MeV/c$^{2}$ in the $γγ$ invariant mass spectra in pC, dC, and dCu collisions at $\textit{p}_{lab}$ of a few GeV/c per nucleon

The results of an analysis of the invariant mass spectra of photon pairs produced in dC, pC and dCu interactions at momenta of 2.75, 5.5 and 3.83 GeV/c per nucleon respectively, are presented. Signals in the form of enhanced structures at invariant masses of about 17 and 38 MeV/c2 are observed. The results of testing of the observed signals, including the results of the Monte Carlo simulation are presented. The test results support the conclusion that the observed signals are the consequence of detection of the particles with masses of about 17 and 38 MeV/c2 decaying into a pair of photons.

Formation of hypernuclei in heavy-ion collisions around the threshold energies

In relativistic ion collisions there are excellent opportunities to produce and investigate hyper-nuclei. We have systematically studied the formation of hypernuclear spectator residues in peripheral heavy-ion collisions with the transport DCM and UrQMD models. The hyperon capture was calculated within the potential and coalescence approaches. We demonstrate that even at the beam energies around and lower than the threshold for producing Lambda hyperons in binary nucleon-nucleon interactions a considerable amount of hypernuclei, including multi-strange ones, can be produced. This is important for preparation of new experiments on hypernuclei in the wide energy range. The uncertainties of the predictions are investigated within the models, and the comparison with the strangeness production measured in experiments is also performed.

Femto-cyclones and hyperon polarization in Heavy-Ion Collisions

We study the structure of vorticity and hydrodynamic helicity fields in peripheral heavy-ion collisions using the kinetic Quark-Gluon String Model. The angular momentum conservation within this model holds with a good accuracy. We observe the formation of specific toroidal structures of vorticity field (vortex sheets). Their existence is mirrored in the polarization of hyperons of the percent order.

MARS15 Code Developments Driven by the Intensity Frontier Needs

The MARS15(2012) is the latest version of a multi-purpose Monte-Carlo code developed since 1974 for detailed simulation of hadronic and electromagnetic cascades in an arbitrary 3-D geometry of shielding, accelerator, detector and spacecraft components with energy ranging from a fraction of an electronvolt to 100 TeV. Driven by needs of the intensity frontier projects with their Megawatt beams, e.g., ESS, FAIR and Project X, the code has been recently substantially improved and extended. These include inclusive and exclusive particle event generators in the 0.7 to 12 GeV energy range, proton inelastic interaction modeling below 20 MeV, implementation of the EGS5 code for electromagnetic shower simulation at energies from 1 keV to 20 MeV, stopping power description in compound materials, new module for DPA calculations for neutrons from a fraction of eV to 20-150 MeV, user-friendly DeTra-based method to calculate nuclide inventories, and new ROOT-based geometry.

Hadron Production Model Developments and Benchmarking in the 0.7 - 12 GeV Energy Region

Driven by the needs of the intensity frontier projects with their Megawatt beams, e.g., ESS, FAIR and Project X, and their experiments, the event generators of the MARS15 code have been recently improved. After thorough analysis and benchmarking against data, including the newest ones by the HARP collaboration, both the exclusive and inclusive particle production models were further developed in the crucial for the above projects - but difficult from a theoretical standpoint - projectile energy region of 0.7 to 12 GeV. At these energies, modelling of prompt particle production in nucleon-nucleon and pion-nucleon inelastic reactions is now based on a combination of phase-space and isobar models. Other reactions are still modeled in the framework of the Quark-Gluon String Model. Pion, kaon and strange particle production and propagation in nuclear media are improved. For the alternative inclusive mode, experimental data on large-angle (> 20 degrees) pion production in hadron-nucleus interactions are parameterized in a broad energy range using a two-source model. It is mixed-and-matched with the native MARS model that successfully describes low-angle pion production data. Predictions of both new models are - in most cases - in a good agreement with experimental data obtained at CERN, JINR, LANL, BNL and KEK.

Strangeness in Quark Matter 2013: Opening Talk

We discuss several new developments in the field of strange and heavy flavor physics in high energy heavy ion collisions. As shown by many recent theoretical works, heavy flavored particles give us a unique opportunity to study the properties of systems created in these collisions. Two in particular important aspects, the production of (multi) strange hypernuclei and the properties of heavy flavor mesons, are at the core of several future facilities and will be discussed in detail.

Production of hypernuclei in peripheral relativistic ion collisions

Within a dynamical and statistical approach we study the main regularities in production of hypernuclei coming from projectile and target residues in relativistic ion collisions. We demonstrate that yields of hypernuclei increase considerably above the energy threshold for Lambda hyperons, and there is a saturation for yields of single hypernuclei with increasing the beam energy up to few TeV. Production of specific hypernuclei depend very much on the isotopic composition of the projectile, and this gives a chance to obtain exotic hypernuclei that may be difficult to reach in traditional hypernuclear experiments. Possibilities for the detection of such hypernuclei with planned and available relativistic ion facilities are discussed.

Observation of the E(38)-boson

The first results of the search for the E(38)-boson are presented. The search was conducted in the effective mass spectra of photon pairs produced in the d(2.0 GeV/n) + C, d(3.0 GeV/n) + Cu and p(4.6 GeV) + C reactions. The experimental data was obtained at internal beams of the JINR Nuclotron. Due to non ordinariness of the obtained results (standing out of The Standard Model) and at the request of co-authors the first version of the article is withdrawn for further verification and more detailed description of the experiment and data analysis. The second version is being prepared.

Resonance structure in the γγ and $π^0π^0$ systems in dC interactions

Along with $π^0$ and η mesons, a resonance structure in the invariant mass spectrum of two photons at Mγγ = 360 \pm 7 \pm 9 MeV is observed in the reaction d + C \rightarrow γ + γ + X at momentum 2.75 GeV/c per nucleon. Estimates of its width and production cross section are Γ = 64 \pm 18 MeV and $σ_{γγ}$ = 98 \pm 24 μb, respectively. The collected statistics amount to 2339 \pm 340 events of 1.5 \cdot 10^6 triggered interactions of a total number ~ 10^12 of dC-interactions. The results on observation of the resonance in the invariant mass spectra of two $π^0$ mesons are presented: the data obtained in the d + C \rightarrow γ + γ reaction is confirmed by the d + C \rightarrow $π^0$ + $π^0$ reaction: $M_{π^0π^0}$ = 359.2 \pm 1.9 MeV, Γ = 48.9 \pm 4.9 MeV; the ratio of Br(R\rightarrowγγ) / Br(R\rightarrow$π^0π^0$) = (1.8 ÷ 3.7)\cdot10^-3.

Production of spectator hypermatter in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the formation of large hyper-fragments in relativistic heavy-ion collisions within two transport models, DCM and UrQMD. Our goal is to explore a new mechanism for the formation of strange nuclear systems via capture of hyperons by relatively cold spectator matter produced in semi-peripheral collisions. We investigate basic characteristics of the produced hyper-spectators and evaluate the production probabilities of multi-strange systems. Advantages of the proposed mechanisms over an alternative coalescence mechanism are analysed. We also discuss how such systems can be detected taking into account the background of free hyperons. This investigation is important for the development of new experimental methods for producing hyper-nuclei in peripheral relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, which are now underway at GSI and are planned for the future FAIR and NICA facilities.

Resonance Structure in the $γγ$ Invariant Mass Spectrum in $p$C- and $d$C-Interactions

Along with $π^0$ and $η$ mesons, a resonance structure in the invariant mass spectrum of two photons at $M_{γγ}= 360 \pm 7 \pm 9$ MeV is observed in the reaction $d C\toγ+ γ+X$ at momentum 2.75 GeV/c per nucleon. Estimates of its width and production cross section are $Γ= 63.7 \pm 17.8$ MeV and $σ_{γγ}=98\pm24^{+93}_{-67} {\rm μb}$, respectively. The collected statistics amount to $2339 \pm 340$ events of $1.5\cdot 10^6$ triggered interactions of a total number $\sim 10^{12}$ of $d$C-interactions. This resonance structure is not observed in $p$C collisions at the beam momentum 5.5 GeV/c. Possible mechanisms of this ABC-like effect are discussed.

Recoil Studies in the Reaction of 12-C Ions with the Enriched Isotope 118-Sn

The recoil properties of the product nuclei from the interaction of 2.2 GeV/nucleon 12-C ions from Nuclotron of the Laboratory of High Energies (LHE), Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) at Dubna with a 118-Sn target have been studied using catcher foils. The experimental data were analyzed using the mathematical formalism of the standard two-step vector model. The results for 12-C ions are compared with those for deuterons and protons. Three different Los Alamos versions of the Quark-Gluon String Model (LAQGSM) were used for comparison with our experimental data.

CEM03.03 and LAQGSM03.03 Event Generators for the MCNP6, MCNPX, and MARS15 Transport Codes

A description of the IntraNuclear Cascade (INC), preequilibrium, evaporation, fission, coalescence, and Fermi breakup models used by the latest versions of our CEM03.03 and LAQGSM03.03 event generators is presented, with a focus on our most recent developments of these models. The recently developed "S" and "G" versions of our codes, that consider multifragmentation of nuclei formed after the preequilibrium stage of reactions when their excitation energy is above 2A MeV using the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) code by Botvina et al. ("S" stands for SMM) and the fission-like binary-decay model GEMINI by Charity ("G" stands for GEMINI), respectively, are briefly described as well. Examples of benchmarking our models against a large variety of experimental data on particle-particle, particle-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus reactions are presented. Open questions on reaction mechanisms and future necessary work are outlined.

LAQGSM03.03 Upgrade and its Validation

This paper presents part of an internal LANL Progress Report on LAQGSM03.03, an upgrade of the Los Alamos version of the Quark-Gluon String Model event generator for MCNPX/6 and MARS15 transport codes and on its validation and testing against a large variety of recent measurements. We present here an analysis with LAQGSM03.03 of the recent PHENIX mid-rapidity spectra of pi+, pi-, K+, K-, p, and p-bar produced in ultra-relativistic p + p interactions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV; GSI cross sections for the fragmentation of Pb208 at 1 GeV/nucleon on Be9; fragmentation cross sections of Si28 on H, C, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb at energies from 290 to 1200 MeV/nucleon measred recently at HIMAC and BNL; recent HIMAC data on B, Be, Li, and He production cross sections from fragmentation of C12 on H, C, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb at 290 and 400 MeV/nucleon; BNL data on fragmentation cross sections of Fe56 on H, C, Al, Cu, and Pb targets at 1.05 GeV/nucleon; recent pi+ and pi- spectra from 6.4, 12.3, and 17.5 GeV/c p + Be9 from the E910 BNL measurements; and fragmentation cross sections of Ca40, Ca48, Ni58, and Ni64 on Be9 and Ta181 at 140 MeV/nucleon, and of Kr86 at 64 MeV/nucleon on the same targets measured recently at NSCL-MSU and RARF-RIKEN, respectively.

Extension of the LAQGSM03.01 Code to Describe Photo-Nuclear Reactions up to Tens of GeV

The Los Alamos version of the Quark-Gluon String Model implemented in the code LAQGSM03 was extended to describe photonuclear reactions at energies up to tens of GeV. We have incorporated 56 channels to consider gamma+p elementary interactions during the cascade stage of reactions and 56 channels for gamma+n interactions, in addition to absorption of photons on two-nucleon pairs, into LAQGSM03 and have tested the extended code referred to as LAQGSM03.01 on a number of measured high-energy photonuclear reactions. Here, we present the photonuclear reaction model of LAQGSM03.01 and show examples of its results compared with available experimental data.

Recoil Products from p+$^{118}Sn$ and d+$^{118}Sn$ at 3.65 GeV/A

The recoil properties of the product nuclei from the interaction of 3.65 GeV/nucleon protons and deuterons with $^{118}Sn$ target have been studied by the method of catching foils on the beams of LHE JINR. The mathematical formalism of the standard two step vector model was used for the analysis of experimental results. The obtained results for the protons are compared with the ones obtained for the deuterons. The total energy of the deuterons beam was 3.65GeV/nucleon. It is interesting to note that the forward velocity v and the recoil nuclei kinetic energy increases linearly with the increase of mass loss of target $ΔA$, but seems to change its slope at around $ΔA=60$. It seems that light and medium mass products are produced partly by a fragmentation mechanism.

Multifragmentation vs. Evaporation vs. Binary-Decay in Fragment Production

This paper presents part of an internal LANL Progress Report on completion of the "S" and "G" versions of the improved Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM03.01) and the Los Alamos Quark-Gluon String Model (LAQGSM.03.01) codes. The "S" versions consider fragmentation of compound nuclei produced after the preequilibrium stage of reactions for excitation energies above 2A MeV using the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) by Botvina et al. ("S" stands for SMM), while the "G" versions describe evaporation/fission stages of reactions using the fission-like binary-decay model GEMINI of Charity et al. ("G" stands for GEMINI) instead of using the the Generalized Evaporation Model GEM2 of Furihata incorporated into the standard versions of these codes. We present here an analysis of the recent 660 MeV p + 129I and 3.65 GeV p + 112Sn JINR measurements, of the new COSY data on 1.2 GeV p + (13 nuclei from Al to Th), of the 300 MeV and 1 GeV p + 56Fe data measured at GSI in inverse kinematics, and of the new GSI data on 1 GeV/nucleon 124Xe and 136Xe + Pb. To better understand the mechanisms of fragment production, we discuss several calculated but not-yet-measured kinematic characteristics of products of these reactions, which are predicted to be quite different by SMM, GEMINI, and GEM2. We find these kinematic quantities to be potentially useful in differentiating these reaction mechanisms if they can be measured in future experiments.
