Inflationary gravitational wave background as a tail effect

The free propagator of a massless mode in an expanding universe can be written as a sum of two terms, a lightcone and a tail part. The latter describes a subluminal (time-like) signal. We show that the inflationary gravitational wave background, influencing cosmic microwave background polarization, and routinely used for constraining inflationary models through the so-called $r$ ratio, originates exclusively from the tail part.

Gravitational wave memory in conformally flat spacetimes

We study the gravitational wave memory effect in spacetimes related to flat space by a conformal transformation. The discussion is general but the gravitational wave length scale is assumed to be small compared with the background curvature radius. The general formulas are applied to Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metrics of all spatial curvatures. The effect of new terms stemming from spatial curvature is potentially detectable in future gravitational wave measurements.

Gravitational wave memory and its tail in cosmology

We study gravitational wave memory effect in the FRW cosmological model with matter and cosmological constant. Since the background is curved, gravitational radiation develops a tail part arriving after the main signal that travels along the past light cone of the observer. First we discuss first order gravitational wave sourced by a binary system, and find that the tail only gives a negligible memory, in accord with previous results. Then we study the nonlinear memory effect coming from induced gravitational radiation sourced by first order gravitational radiation propagating over cosmological distances. In the light cone part of the induced gravitational wave we find a novel term missed in previous studies of the cosmological memory effect. Furthermore, we show that the induced gravitational wave has a tail part that slowly accumulates after the light cone part has passed and grows to a sizeable magnitude over a cosmological timescale. This tail part of the memory effect will be a new component in the stochastic gravitational wave background.

Memory effect in Yang-Mills theory with an axion

We study the empirical realization of the memory effect in Yang-Mills theory with an axion-like particle, especially in view of the classical vs. quantum nature of the theory. We solve for the coupled equations of motion iteratively in the axionic contributions and explicitly display the gauge invariant effects in terms of field strengths. We apply our results in the context of heavy ion collisions, in the thin nuclear sheet limit, and point out that a probe particle traversing radiation train acquires a longitudinal null memory kick in addition to the usual transverse kick.

Gluon Radiation from a classical point particle II: dense gluon fields

The goal of this paper is to extend the results of Ref. [1], where formulae were derived for gluonic radiation for a high energy nucleus colliding with a classical colored particle. In Ref. [1], we computed the amplitudes for radiation in the fragmentation region of the particle for a dilute gluonic field. In this paper, we compute the radiation by solving the fluctuation equations of the dense background field in a specific gauge which makes it simple to solve the asymptotic radiation from an initial condition immediately after the passage of the nucleus. We identify and compute two components of gluon radiation, a bulk component which extends to the central region and bremsstrahlung, which may give rise to an experimentally observable intensity peak in the target fragmentation region.

Memory effect in Yang-Mills theory

We study the empirical realisation of the memory effect in Yang-Mills theory, especially in view of the classical vs. quantum nature of the theory. Gauge invariant analysis of memory in classical U(1) electrodynamics and its observation by total change of transverse momentum of a charge is reviewed. Gauge fixing leads to a determination of a gauge transformation at infinity. An example of Yang-Mills memory then is obtained by reinterpreting known results on interactions of a quark and a large high energy nucleus in the theory of Color Glass Condensate. The memory signal is again a kick in transverse momentum, but it is only obtained in quantum theory after fixing the gauge, after summing over an ensemble of classical processes.

A holographic model for QCD in the Veneziano limit at finite temperature and density

A holographic model of QCD in the limit of large number of colors, $N_c$, and massless fermion flavors, $N_f$, but constant ratio $x_f=N_f/N_c$ is analyzed at finite temperature and chemical potential. The five dimensional gravity model contains three bulk fields: a scalar dilaton sourcing ${\rm Tr}F^2$, a scalar tachyon dual to $\bar qq$ and a 4-vector dual to the baryon current $\bar q γ^μ q$. The main result is the $μ,T$ phase diagram of the holographic theory. A first order deconfining transition along $T_h(μ)$ and a chiral transition at $T_χ(μ)>T_h(μ)$ are found. The chiral transition is of second order for all $μ$. The dependence of thermodynamical quantities including the speed of sound and susceptibilities on the chemical potential and temperature is computed. A new quantum critical regime is found at zero temperature and finite chemical potential. It is controlled by an AdS$_2\times R^3$ geometry and displays semi-local criticality.

Quantum and stringy corrections to the equation of state of holographic QCD matter and the nature of the chiral transition

We consider the finite temperature phase diagram of holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit (Nc large, Nf large with xf=Nf/Nc fixed) and calculate one string-loop corrections to the free energy in certain approximations. Such corrections, especially due to the pion modes are unsuppressed in the Veneziano limit. We find that under some extra assumptions the first order transition following from classical gravity solutions can become second order. If stringy asymptotics are of a special form and there are residual interactions it may even become of third order. Operationally these computations imply modelling the low temperature chiral symmetry breaking phase with a hadron gas containing Nf^2 massless Goldstone bosons and an exponential spectrum of massive hadrons. A third order transition is possible only if repulsive hadron interactions via the excluded volume effect are included.

Energy momentum tensor correlators in hot Yang-Mills theory: holography confronts lattice and perturbation theory

We investigate the behavior of energy momentum tensor correlators in strongly coupled large-N_c Yang-Mills theory at nonzero temperature, working within the Improved Holographic QCD model. In particular, we determine the spectral functions and corresponding imaginary time correlators in the bulk and shear channels, and compare the results to recent perturbative and lattice calculations where available. For the bulk channel imaginary time correlator, for which all three results exist, lattice data is seen to favor the holographic prediction over the perturbative one over a wide range of temperatures.

On finite-temperature holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit

Holographic models in the T=0 universality class of QCD in the limit of large number N_c of colors and N_f massless fermion flavors, but constant ratio x_f=N_f/N_c, are analyzed at finite temperature. The models contain a 5-dimensional metric and two scalars, a dilaton sourcing TrF^2 and a tachyon dual to \bar qq. The phase structure on the T,x_f plane is computed and various 1st order, 2nd order transitions and crossovers with their chiral symmetry properties are identified. For each x_f, the temperature dependence of p/T^4 and the quark-antiquark -condensate is computed. In the simplest case, we find that for x_f up to the critical x_c\sim 4 there is a 1st order transition on which chiral symmetry is broken and the energy density jumps. In the conformal window x_c<x_f<11/2, there is only a continuous crossover between two conformal phases. When approaching x_c from below, x_f\to x_c, temperature scales approach zero as specified by Miransky scaling.

Mass spectrum and thermodynamics of quasi-conformal gauge theories from gauge/gravity duality

We use gauge/gravity duality to study simultaneously the mass spectrum and the thermodynamics of a generic quasi-conformal gauge theory, specified by its beta function. The beta function of a quasi-conformal theory almost vanishes, and the coupling is almost constant between two widely separated energy scales. Depending on whether the gravity dual has a black hole or not, the mass spectrum is either a spectrum of quasinormal oscillations or a normal T=0 mass spectrum. The mass spectrum is quantitatively correlated with the thermal properties of the system. As the theory approaches conformality, the masses have to vanish. We show that in this limit, the masses calculated via gauge/gravity duality satisfy expected scaling properties.

Frequency and wave number dependence of the shear correlator in strongly coupled hot Yang-Mills theory

We use AdS/QCD duality to compute the finite temperature Green's function G(omega,k;T) of the shear operator T_12 for all omega,k in hot Yang-Mills theory. The goal is to assess how the existence of scales like the transition temperature and glueball masses affects the correlator computed in the scalefree conformal N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We observe sizeable effects for T close to T_c which rapidly disappear with increasing T. Quantitative agreement of these predictions with future lattice Monte Carlo data would suggest that QCD matter in this temperature range is strongly interacting.

Spatial scalar correlator in strongly coupled hot N=4 Yang-Mills theory

We use AdS/CFT duality to compute in N=4 Yang-Mills theory the finite temperature spatial correlator G(r) of the scalar operator F^2, integrated over imaginary time. The computation is carried out both at zero frequency and integrating the spectral function over frequencies. The result is compared with a perturbative computation in finite T SU(N_c) Yang-Mills theory.

Thermodynamics of Quasi Conformal Theories From Gauge/Gravity Duality

We use gauge/gravity duality to study the thermodynamics of a generic almost conformal theory, specified by its beta function. Three different phases are identified, a high temperature phase of massless partons, an intermediate quasi-conformal phase and a low temperature confining phase. The limit of a theory with infrared fixed point, in which the coupling does not run to infinity, is also studied. The transitions between the phases are of first order or continuous, depending on the parameters of the beta function. The results presented follow from gauge/gravity duality; no specific boundary theory is assumed, only its beta function.

Thermodynamics of a field theory with infrared fixed point from gauge/gravity duality

We use gauge/gravity duality to study the thermodynamics of a field theory with asymptotic freedom in the ultraviolet and a fixed point in the infrared. We find a high temperature quark-gluon phase and a low T conformal unparticle phase. The phase transition between the phases is of first order or continuous, depending on the ratio of the radii of asymptotic AdS5 spaces at T=0 and T=infinity. This is a prediction from a model of gauge/gravity duality, not yet verified on the field theory side.

A gauge/gravity duality model for gauge theory thermodynamics

We study a gauge/gravity model for the thermodynamics of a gauge theory with one running coupling. The gravity side contains an ansatz for the metric and a scalar field, on the field theory side one starts by giving an ansatz for the beta function describing the scale dependence of the coupling. The model is based on relating the scale to the extra dimensional coordinate and the beta function to the gravity fields, thereby also determining the scalar field potential. We study three different forms of beta functions of increasing complexity and give semianalytic solutions describing first order or continuous transitions.
