The Electroweak Phase Transition at $m_H \simeq m_W$

We study the finite temperature electroweak transition with non-perturbative lattice Monte Carlo simulations. We find that it is of first order, at least for Higgs masses up to 80 GeV. The critical temperature of the phase transition is found to be smaller than that determined by a 2-loop renormalization group improved effective potential. The jump of the order parameter at the critical temperature is considerably larger than the perturbative value. By comparing lattice data and perturbation theory, we demonstrate that the latter, for the computation of the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field $v(T)$ in the broken phase at given temperature, converges quite well, provided $v(T)/T>1$. An upper bound on the Higgs mass necessary for electroweak baryogenesis in the light of the lattice data is briefly discussed.

Multiplicities for LHC Nuclear Collisions Using HERA Structure Functions

We compute in QCD perturbation theory the transverse energy carried by gluons, quarks and antiquarks with $p_T\ge p_0\approx 2$ GeV in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5500$ $A$GeV by using structure functions compatible with the small-$x$ increase observed at HERA. This gives a perturbative estimate for the energy and entropy density of the bulk system at times $τ\sim 0.1$ fm. The predicted initial gluon entropy density gives a lower limit of about 2200...3400 for the final charged multiplicity. Sources of further entropy increase are discussed.

3D Physics and the Electroweak Phase Transition: Perturbation Theory

We develop a method for the construction of the effective potential at high temperatures based on the effective field theory approach and renormalization group. It allows one to sum up the leading logarithms in all orders of perturbation theory. The method reproduces the known one-loop and two-loop results in a very simple and economic way and clarifies the issue of the convergence of the perturbation theory. We also discuss the assumptions being made for the determination of the critical temperature of the electroweak phase transition, and analyse different perturbative uncertainties in its determination. These results are then used for the non-perturbative lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the EW phase transition in forthcoming paper.

A Hierarchy of Effective Field Theories of Hot Electroweak Matter

Abst\-ract: A hierarchy of effective three-dimensional theories of finite temperature electroweak matter is studied. First an integration over non-static modes leads to an effective theory containing a gauge field $A_{i}^{a}$, an adjoint Higgs field $A_{0}^a$ and the fundamental Higgs field $ϕ_α$. We carry out the integration in the 1-loop approximation, study renormalisation effects and estimate quantitatively those terms of the effective action which are suppressed by inverse powers of the temperature. Secondly, because of the existence of well-separated thermal mass scales, $A_{0}^a$ can be integrated over, and finally also $ϕ_α$, leaving an effective theory of the $A_{i}^{a}$.In the analysis of the subsequent models particular attention is paid to the screening of the magnetic fluctuations due to the integrated-out degrees of freedom. The Finite Temperature Phase Transition in the Lattice SU(2)-Higgs Model

We study the finite temperature transition of SU(2)-Higgs model with lattice Monte Carlo techniques. We use dimensional reduction to transform the original 4-dimensional SU(2)-gauge + fundamental Higgs theory to an effective 3-dimensional SU(2) + adjoint Higgs + fundamental Higgs model. The simulations were performed with Higgs masses of 35 and 80 GeV; in both cases we observe a stronger first order transition than the perturbation theory predicts, indicating that the dynamics of the transition strongly depend on non-perturbative effects.

The Growth of Bubbles in Cosmological Phase Transitions

We study how bubbles grow after the initial nucleation event in generic first-order cosmological phase transitions characterised by the values of latent heat, interface tension and correlation length, and driven by a scalar order parameter $ϕ$. Equations coupling $ϕ$ and the fluid variables $v$ and $T$ and depending on a dissipative constant $Γ$ are derived and solved numerically in the 1+1 dimensional case starting from a slightly deformed critical bubble configuration. Parameters corresponding to QCD and electroweak phase transitions are chosen and the whole history of the bubble with formation of combustion and shock fronts is computed as a function of $Γ$. Both deflagrations and detonations can appear depending on the values of the parameters. Reheating due to collisions of bubbles is also computed.

A Lattice Monte Carlo Study of the Hot Electroweak Phase Transition

We study the finite temperature electroweak phase transition with lattice perturbation theory and Monte Carlo techniques. Dimensional reduction is used to approximate the full four-dimensional SU(2) + a fundamental doublet Higgs theory by an effective three-dimensional SU(2) + adjoint Higgs + fundamental Higgs theory with coefficients depending on temperature via screening masses and mass counterterms. Fermions contribute to the effective theory only via the $N_F$ and $m_{\rm top}$ dependence of the coefficients. For sufficiently small lattices ($N^3 < 30^3$ for $m_H$ = 35 GeV) the study of the one-loop lattice effective potential shows the existence of the {\em second} order phase transition even for the small Higgs masses. At the same time, a clear signal of a {\em first order} phase transition is seen on the lattice simulations with a transition temperature close to but less than the value determined from the perturbative calculations. This indicates that the dynamics of the first order electroweak phase transition depends strongly on non-perturbative effects and is not exclusively related to the so-called $ϕ^3$ term in the effective potential.

Hydrodynamic Stability Analysis of Burning Bubbles in Electroweak Theory and in QCD

Assuming that the electroweak and QCD phase transitions are first order, upon supercooling, bubbles of the new phase appear. These bubbles grow to macroscopic sizes compared to the natural scales associated with the Compton wavelengths of particle excitations. They propagate by burning the old phase into the new phase at the surface of the bubble. We study the hydrodynamic stability of the burning and find that for the velocities of interest for cosmology in the electroweak phase transition, the shape of the bubble wall is stable under hydrodynamic perturbations. Bubbles formed in the cosmological QCD phase transition are found to be a borderline case between stability and instability.

The Free Energy of Spherical Bubbles in Lattice SU(3) Gauge Theory

We study the coefficients of the expansion $F(R) = 1/3 c_3 R^3 + 1/2 c_2 R^2 + c_1 R$ of the free energy of spherical bubbles at $T=T_c$ in pure glue QCD using lattice Monte Carlo techniques. The coefficient $c_3$ vanishes at $T=T_c$ and our results suggest that the sign and the order of magnitude of $c_1$ is in agreement with the value $c_1=\pm 32πT_c^2/9$ (- for hadronic bubbles in quark phase, + for quark bubbles in hadronic phase) computed by Mardor and Svetitsky from the MIT bag model. The parameter $c_2$ is small in agreement with earlier determinations.
