Spin-lattice instability to a fractional magnetization state in the spinel HgCr2O4

Magnetic systems are fertile ground for the emergence of exotic states when the magnetic interactions cannot be satisfied simultaneously due to the topology of the lattice - a situation known as geometrical frustration. Spinels, AB2O4, can realize the most highly frustrated network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Several novel states have been discovered in spinels, such as composite spin clusters and novel charge-ordered states. Here we use neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering to characterize the fractional magnetization state of HgCr2O4 under an external magnetic field, H. When the field is applied in its Neel ground state, a phase transition occurs at H ~ 10 Tesla at which each tetrahedron changes from a canted Neel state to a fractional spin state with the total spin, Stet, of S/2 and the lattice undergoes orthorhombic to cubic symmetry change. Our results provide the microscopic one-to-one correspondence between the spin state and the lattice distortion.

Manipulating 4f quadrupolar pair interactions in TbB2C2 using a magnetic field

Resonant soft x-ray Bragg diffraction at the Tb M4,5 edges and non resonant Bragg diffraction have been used to investigate orbitals in TbB2C2. The Tb 4f quadrupole moments are ordered in zero field below T_N and show a ferroquadrupolar alignment dictated by the antiferromagnetic order. With increasing applied field along [110] the Tb 4f magnetic dipole moments rotate in a gradual manner toward the field. The quadrupole moment is rigidly coupled to the magnetic moment and follows this field-induced rotation. The quadrupolar pair interaction is found to depend on the specific orientation of the orbitals as predicted theoretically and can be manipulated with an applied magnetic field.

High-field phase diagram of the Haldane-gap antiferromagnet $Ni (C_5 H_{14} N_2)_2 N_3 (PF_6)$

We have determined the magnetic phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional $S=$ 1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet $Ni (C_5 H_{14} N_2)_2 N_3 (PF_6)$ by specific heat measurements to 150 mK in temperature and 32 T in magnetic field. When field is applied along the spin-chain direction, a new phase appears at $H_{c2}\approx 14$ T. For the previously known phases of field-induced order, accurate determination is made of the power-law exponents of the ordering temperature near the zero-temperature critical field $H_c$, owing to the four-fold improvement of the minimum temperature over the previous work. The results are compared with the predictions based on the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet excitations. Substituting deuterium for hydrogen is found to slightly reduce the interchain exchange.

Observation of a Transient Magnetization Plateau in a Quantum Antiferromagnet on the Kagome Lattice

The magnetization process of an S=1/2 antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice, [Cu_3(titmb)_2(OCOCH_3)_6]H_2O {titmb= 1,3,5-tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6 trimethylbenzene} has been measured at very low temperatures in both pulsed and steady fields. We have found a new dynamical behavior in the magnetization process: a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization appears in the pulsed field experiments for intermediate sweep rates of the magnetic field and disappears in the steady field experiments. A theoretical analysis using exact diagonalization yields J_1=-19K and J_2=6K, for the nearest neighbor and second nearest neighbor interactions, respectively. This set of exchange parameters explains the very low saturation field and the absence of the plateau in the thermodynamic equilibrium as well as the two-peak feature in the magnetic heat capacity. Supported by numerical results we argue that a dynamical order by disorder phenomenon could explain the transient appearance of the 1/3 plateau in pulsed field experiments.

Dynamics of an anisotropic Haldane antiferromagnet in strong magnetic field

We report the results of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the Haldane gap quantum antiferromagnet Ni(C5D14N2)2N3(PF6) performed at mK temperatures in a wide range of magnetic field applied parallel to the S = 1 spin chains. Even though this geometry is closest to an ideal axially symmetric configuration, the Haldane gap closes at the critical field Hc~4T, but reopens again at higher fields. The field dependence of the two lowest magnon modes is experimentally studied and the results are compared with the predictions of several theoretical models. We conclude that of several existing theories, only the recently proposed model [Zheludev et al., cond-mat/0301424 ] is able to reproduce all the features observed experimentally for different field orientations.

Zeeman levels with exotic field dependence in the high field phase of a S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain

We have performed electron spin resonance measurements over a wide frequency and magnetic field range on a single crystal of the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet $\rm Ni(C_5H_{14}N_2)_2N_3(PF_6)$. We observed gapped excitation branches above the critical field ($H_{\rm c}$) where the Haldane gap closes. These branches are analyzed by a phenomenological field-theory using complex-field $ϕ^{4}$ model. A satisfactory agreement between experiment and theory is obtained.

Massive triplet excitations in a magnetized anisotropic Haldane spin chain

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the Haldane-gap quantum antiferromagnet \nd are performed at mK temperatures in magnetic fields of almost twice the critical field $H_c$ applied perpendicular to the spin cahins. Above $H_c$ a re-opening of the spin gap is clearly observed. In the high-field Néel-ordered state the spectrum is dominated by three distinct long-lived excitation branches. Several field-theoretical models are tested in a quantitative comparison with the experimental data.

Electron Spin Resonance of Ni-doped CuGeO$_3$ in the paramagnetic, spin-Peierls and antiferromagnetic states: Comparison with non-magnetic impurities

We have performed Electron Spin Resonance measurements on single crystals of the doped spin-Peierls compounds CuGe$_{1-y}$Si$_y$O$_3$ and Cu$_{1-x}$M$_x$GeO$_3$ with M = Zn, Mg, Ni ($x, y\leq 0.1$). The first part of our experiments was performed in the paramagnetic and spin-Peierls phases at 9.5, 95 and 190 GHz. All non-magnetic impurities (Si, Zn and Mg) were found to hardly affect the position and linewidth of the single line resonance, in spite of the moment formation due to the broken chains. In contrast to Si, Zn and Mg-doping, the presence of Ni (S = 1) at low concentration induces a spectacular shift towards high fields of the ESR line (up to 40% for x=0.002), together with a large broadening. This shift is strictly proportional to the ratio of Ni to Cu susceptibilities: Hence it is strongly enhanced below the spin-Peierls transition. We interpret this shift and the broadening as due to the exchange field induced by the Ni ions onto the strongly exchange coupled Cu spins. Second, the antiferromagnetic resonance was investigated in Ni-doped samples. The frequency vs magnetic field relation of the resonance is well explained by the classical theory with orthorhombic anisotropy, with $g$ values remarkably reduced, in accordance with the study of the spin-Peierls and paramagnetic phases. The easy, second-easy, and hard axes are found to be $a$, $c$, and $b$ axes, respectively. These results, which are dominated by the single ion anisotropy of Ni$^{2+}$, are discussed in comparison with those in the Zn- and Si-doped CuGeO$_3$.

Far infrared spectroscopy on the three-dimensional dilute antiferromagnet Fe(x)Zn(1-x)F2

Fourier-transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectroscopy measurements have been performed on the three-dimensional dilute antiferromagnet Fe(x)Zn(1-x)F2 with x=0.99 ~ 0.58 in far infrared (FIR) region. The FIR spectra are analyzed taking into account the ligand field and the local exchange interaction probability with J1 ~ J3; |J1|,|J3|<<|J2|, where J1, J2 and J3 are the nearest neighbor, second nearest neighbor and third nearest neighbor exchange interaction constants, respectively. The concentration dependence of the FIR spectra at low temperature is qualitatively well reproduced by our analysis, though some detailed structure remains unexplained.

Field-induced 3- and 2-dimensional freezing in a quantum spin liquid

Field-induced commensurate transverse magnetic ordering is observed in the Haldane-gap compound \nd by means of neutron diffraction. Depending on the direction of applied field, the high-field phase is shown to be either a 3-dimensional ordered Néel state or a short-range ordered state with dominant 2-dimensional spin correlations. The structure of the high-field phase is determined, and properties of the observed quantum phase transition are discussed.

Direct Observation of the Quantum Energy Gap in S = 1/2 Tetragonal Cuprate Antiferromagnets

Using an electron spin resonance spectrometer covering a wide range of frequency and magnetic field, we have measured the low energy excitations of the S=1/2 tetragonal antiferromagnets, Sr_{2}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} and Sr_{2}Cu_{3}O_{4}Cl_{2}. Our observation of in-plane energy gaps of order 0.1 meV at zero external magnetic field are consistent with a spin wave calculation, which includes several kinds of quantum fluctuations that remove frustration. Results agree with other experiments and with exchange anisotropy parameters determined from a five band Hubbard model.

Haldane-gap excitations in the low-H_c 1-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet NDMAP

Inelastic neutron scattering on deuterated single-crystal samples is used to study Haldane-gap excitations in the new S=1 one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet NDMAP, that was recently recognized as an ideal model system for high-field studies. The Haldane gap energies $Δ_x=0.42$ meV, $Δ_y=0.52$ meV and $Δ_z=1.86$ meV, for excitations polarized along the a, b, and c crystallographic axes, respectively, are directly measured. The dispersion perpendicular to the chain axis c is studied, and extremely weak inter-chain coupling constants $J_y=1.8\cdot 10^{-3}$ meV and $J_x=3.5\cdot 10^{-4}$ meV, along the a and b axes, respectively, are determined. The results are discussed in the context of future experiments in high magnetic fields.

Absence of hysteresis in the heat capacity of the three-dimensional random-field Ising model

Heat capacity measurements on the prototypical three-dimensional random-field Ising model compound Fe0.58Zn0.42F2 have been performed in both of the field-cooling (FC) and zero-field-cooling (ZFC) procedures. There is no evidence of hysteresis between the FC and ZFC protocols within the experimental accuracy. The absence of hysteresis is interpreted based on a magnetic field (H)-temperature (T) phase diagram in which a metastability region exists between the Neel temperature line Tn(H) and Hc1(T), the latter being the lowest critical field line for the local spin flips.

Magnetic excitations and structural change in the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional magnet Sr_{14-x}Y_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41} (0<x<1)

Neutron scattering measurements have been performed on the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional system Sr_{14-x}Y_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}, which has both simple chains and two-leg ladders of copper ions. We observed that when a small amount of yttrium is substituted for strontium, which is expected to reduce the number of holes, the dimerized state and the structure in the chain are changed drastically. The inelastic peaks originating from the dimerized state of the chain becomes broader in energy but not in momentum space. This implies that the dimerized state becomes unstable but the spin correlations are unchanged with yttrium substitution. Furthermore, it was observed that nuclear Bragg peak intensities originating from the chain show strong temperature and x dependence, which suggests that the chains slide along the c axis as temperature and x are varied.
