Precision spectroscopy with two correlated atoms

We discuss techniques that allow for long coherence times in laser spectroscopy experiments with two trapped ions. We show that for this purpose not only entangled ions prepared in decoherence-free subspaces can be used but also a pair of ions that are not entangled but subject to the same kind of phase noise. We apply this technique to a measurement of the electric quadrupole moment of the 3d D5/2 state of 40Ca+ and to a measurement of the linewidth of an ultrastable laser exciting a pair of 40Ca+ ions.

High-fidelity ion-trap quantum computing with hyperfine clock states

We propose the implementation of a geometric-phase gate on magnetic-field-insensitive qubits with $\hatσ^z$-dependent forces for trapped ion quantum computing. The force is exerted by two laser beams in a Raman configuration. Qubit-state dependency is achieved by a small frequency detuning from the virtually-excited state. Ion species with excited states of long radiative lifetimes are used to reduce the chance of a spontaneous photon emission to less than 10$^{-8}$ per gate-run. This eliminates the main source of gate infidelity of previous implementations. With this scheme it seems possible to reach the fault tolerant threshold.

Nonlinear coupling of continuous variables at the single quantum level

We experimentally investigate nonlinear couplings between vibrational modes of strings of cold ions stored in linear ion traps. The nonlinearity is caused by the ions' Coulomb interaction and gives rise to a Kerr-type interaction Hamiltonian H = n_r*n_s, where n_r,n_s are phonon number operators of two interacting vibrational modes. We precisely measure the resulting oscillation frequency shift and observe a collapse and revival of the contrast in a Ramsey experiment. Implications for ion trap experiments aiming at high-fidelity quantum gate operations are discussed.

Observation of the 1S0 - 3P0 clock transition in 27Al+

We report for the first time, laser spectroscopy of the 1S0 - 3P0 clock transition in 27Al+. A single aluminum ion and a single beryllium ion are simultaneously confined in a linear Paul trap, coupled by their mutual Coulomb repulsion. This coupling allows the beryllium ion to sympathetically cool the aluminum ion, and also enables transfer of the aluminum's electronic state to the beryllium's hyperfine state, which can be measured with high fidelity. These techniques are applied to a measurement of the clock transition frequency, ν= 1 121 015 393 207 851(8) Hz. They are also used to measure the lifetime of the metastable clock state, τ= 20.6 +/- 1.4 s, the ground state 1S0 g-factor, g_S = -0.00079248(14), and the excited state 3P0 g-factor, g_P = -0.00197686(21), in units of the Bohr magneton.

Spectral Broadening of Radiation from Relativistic Collapsing Objects

We study light curves and the spectral broadening of the radiation emitted during the finite interval of time by a surface of a collapsing object. We study a simplified model of monochromatic radiations from a spherical surface which is assumed to be falling freely. We discuss the possible way how to infer the physical parameters, such as the mass and radii of emission, from the light curves and spectral broadenings.

'Designer atoms' for quantum metrology

Entanglement is recognized as a key resource for quantum computation and quantum cryptography. For quantum metrology, the use of entangled states has been discussed and demonstrated as a means of improving the signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, entangled states have been used in experiments for efficient quantum state detection and for the measurement of scattering lengths. In quantum information processing, manipulation of individual quantum bits allows for the tailored design of specific states that are insensitive to the detrimental influences of an environment. Such 'decoherence-free subspaces' protect quantum information and yield significantly enhanced coherence times. Here we use a decoherence-free subspace with specifically designed entangled states to demonstrate precision spectroscopy of a pair of trapped Ca+ ions; we obtain the electric quadrupole moment, which is of use for frequency standard applications. We find that entangled states are not only useful for enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio in frequency measurements - a suitably designed pair of atoms also allows clock measurements in the presence of strong technical noise. Our technique makes explicit use of non-locality as an entanglement property and provides an approach for 'designed' quantum metrology.

Process tomography of ion trap quantum gates

A crucial building block for quantum information processing with trapped ions is a controlled-NOT quantum gate. In this paper, two different sequences of laser pulses implementing such a gate operation are analyzed using quantum process tomography. Fidelities of up to 92.6(6)% are achieved for single gate operations and up to 83.4(8)% for two concatenated gate operations. By process tomography we assess the performance of the gates for different experimental realizations and demonstrate the advantage of amplitude--shaped laser pulses over simple square pulses. We also investigate whether the performance of concatenated gates can be inferred from the analysis of the single gates.

On the role of hydrodynamic interactions in colloidal gelation

In this letter, we investigate several aspects related to the effect of hydrodynamics interactions on phase separation-induced gelation of colloidal particles. We explain physically the observation of Tanaka and Araki[Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 1338 (2000)] of hydrodynamic stabilization of cellular network structures in two dimensions. We demonstrate that hydrodynamic interactions have only a minor quantitative influence on the structure of transient gels in three dimensions. We discuss some experimental implications of our results.

Mn12-acetate film pattern generated by photolithography methods

We demonstrate a straightforward way to lithographically fabricate Mn12-acetate (Mn12O12(CH3COO)16(H2O)4 2CH3COOH 4H2O) thin film patterns on Si/SiO2 surfaces, a significant step in light of the chemical volatility of this organic complex. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of the film patterns allow the determination of the pattern dimensions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data indicate that the patterned material is the intact Mn12-acetate complex. Magnetic measurements of the Mn12-acetate film confirm that the film properties are reminiscent of crystalline Mn12-acetate, suggesting that this approach can be used to fabricate lithographically patterned devices of Mn12-acetate.

Observation of First-Order Metal-Insulator Transition without Structural Phase Transition in VO_2

An abrupt first-order metal-insulator transition (MIT) without structural phase transition is first observed by current-voltage measurements and micro-Raman scattering experiments, when a DC electric field is applied to a Mott insulator VO_2 based two-terminal device. An abrupt current jump is measured at a critical electric field. The Raman-shift frequency and the bandwidth of the most predominant Raman-active A_g mode, excited by the electric field, do not change through the abrupt MIT, while, they, excited by temperature, pronouncedly soften and damp (structural MIT), respectively. This structural MIT is found to occur secondarily.

Data Acquisition and Database Management System for Samsung Superconductor Test Facility

In order to fulfill the test requirement of KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) superconducting magnet system, a large scale superconducting magnet and conductor test facility, SSTF (Samsung Superconductor Test Facility), has been constructed at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. The computer system for SSTF DAC (Data Acquisition and Control) is based on UNIX system and VxWorks is used for the real-time OS of the VME system. EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) is used for the communication between IOC server and client. A database program has been developed for the efficient management of measured data and a Linux workstation with PENTIUM-4 CPU is used for the database server. In this paper, the current status of SSTF DAC system, the database management system and recent test results are presented.
