Kepler Asteroseismology Program: Introduction and First Results

Asteroseismology involves probing the interiors of stars and quantifying their global properties, such as radius and age, through observationsof normal modes of oscillation. The technical requirements for conducting asteroseismology include ultra-high precision measured in photometry in parts per million, as well as nearly continuous time series over weeks to years, and cadences rapid enough to sample oscillations with periods as shortas a few minutes. We report on results from the first 43 days of observations in which the unique capabilities of Kepler in providing a revolutionary advance in asteroseismology are already well in evidence. The Kepler asteroseismology program holds intrinsic importance in supporting the core planetary search program through greatly enhanced knowledge of host star properties, and extends well beyond this to rich applications in stellar astrophysics.

Long-term photometric monitoring with the Mercator telescope. Frequencies and multicolour amplitudes of $γ$ Doradus stars

Gamma Doradus stars are excellent targets for asteroseismology since the gravity modes present in these stars probe the deep stellar interiors. Mode identification will improve the knowledge of these stars considerably. A selected group of Gamma Doradus stars and some candidates were observed with the Mercator telescope to find and/or confirm the periodicities in the light variations and to derive reliable amplitude ratios in different pass bands. A frequency analysis was performed on all new data obtained in the Geneva photometric system. In order to have more reliable and accurate frequencies, the new data were combined with similar data from the literature and with Hipparcos observations. A set of frequencies that minimized the the residuals in a harmonic fit was searched for while allowing means and amplitudes to vary from one observation set to another. Frequencies and amplitudes in the photometric passbands of the Geneva system are given for 21 Gamma Doradus stars. We report the discovery of HD 74504 as a newly found Gamma Doradus star. Our study provides the first extensive multicolour database for the understanding of gravity modes in F-type stars.

Abundance analysis of seven delta Scuti Stars

The current knowledge of the abundance pattern in delta Scuti stars is based on the analysis of just a few field stars. We aim to determine the general chemical properties of the atmospheres of delta Scuti stars based on a statistically relevant sample of stars and will investigate whether the abundance pattern is close to solar, an assumption generally made for pulsation models. We have analysed high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of seven field delta Scuti stars. We derived the fundamental parameters and the photospheric abundances and compared them to a similar sample of cluster delta Scuti stars. With the use of a t-test we demonstrated that there is no difference between the two samples, which allows us to merge them, resulting in a sample of fifteen delta Scuti stars. We did not find any substantial difference between the abundance pattern of our sample of delta Scuti stars and a sample of normal early A- and late F-type stars. One field star in our sample, HD 124953, is most likely a pulsating Am star.

Equidistant frequency triplets in pulsating stars: The Combination Mode Hypothesis

Multiplet structures are a common feature in pulsating stars, and can be the consequence of rotational splitting, mode interaction or sinusoidal amplitude variations. In this paper we examine the phenomenon of (nearly) equidistant triplets, which are unlikely to be caused by rotational splitting, in different types of pulsating stars: a Delta Scuti variable (1 Mon), an RR Lyrae variable (RR Lyr) and a short-period Cepheid (V743 Lyr). We examine the hypothesis that one of the modes forming the triplet results from a combination of the other two modes. The analyses were carried out on recent data sets by using multiple-frequency analyses and statistics with the package PERIOD04. In particular, the small departures from equidistance were calculated for the three selected stars. For the Delta Scuti variable 1 Mon, the departure from equidistance is only 0.000079 +- 0.000001 c/d (or 0.91 +- 0.01 nHz). For 1 Mon the Combination Mode Hypothesis with a mode excited by resonance is the most probable explanation. For the star RR Lyr, the hypothesis of resonance through a combination of modes should be considered. The results for the best-studied cepheid with a Blazhko period (V743 Lyr) are inconclusive because of an unfavorable period of 1.49d and insufficient data.

A spectroscopic study of southern (candidate) gamma Doradus stars. I. Time series analysis

We present results of a spectroscopic study of 37 southern (candidate) gamma Doradus stars based on echelle spectra. The observed spectra were cross-correlated with the standard template spectrum of an F0-type star for an easier detection of binary and intrinsic variations. We identified 15 objects as spectroscopic binaries, including 7 new ones, and another 3 objects are binary suspects. At least 12 objects show composite spectra. We could determine the orbital parameters for 9 binaries, of which 4 turn out to be ellipsoidal variables. For 6 binaries, we estimated the expected time-base of the orbital variations. Clear profile variations are observed for 17 objects, pointing towards stellar pulsation. For 8 of them, we have evidence that the main spectroscopic and photometric periods coincide. Our results, in combination with prior knowledge from the literature, lead to the classification of 10 objects as new bona-fide gamma Doradus stars, 1 object as new bona-fide delta Scuti star, and 8 objects as constant stars. Finally, we determined the projected rotational velocity with two independent methods. The resulting vsini values range from 3 to 135 km/s. For the bona-fide gamma Doradus stars, the majority has vsini below 60 km/s.
