Light-induced magnetization driven by interorbital charge motion in a spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator alpha-RuCl3

In a honeycomb-lattice spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator α-RuCl3, an ultrafast magnetization is induced by circularly polarized excitation below the Mott gap. Photo-carriers play an important role, which are generated by turning down the synergy of the on-site Coulomb interaction and the spin-orbit interaction realizing the insulator state. An ultrafast 6- fs measurement of photo-carrier dynamics and a quantum mechanical analysis clarify the mechanism, according to which the magnetization emerges from a coherent charge motion between different t2g orbitals (dyz-dxz-dxy) of Ru3+ ions. This ultrafast magnetization is weakened in the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase, which is opposite to the general tendency that the inverse Faraday effect is larger in AF compounds than in paramagnetic ones. This temperature dependence indicates that the interorbital charge motion is affected by pseudo-spin rotational symmetry breaking in the AF phase.

Parity Violation in a Single Domain of Spin-Triplet Sr2RuO4 Superconductors

We observed an unconventional parity-violating vortex in single domain Sr2RuO4 single crystals using a transport measurement. The current-voltage characteristics of submicron Sr2RuO4 shows that the induced voltage has anomalous components which are even function of the bias current. The results may suggest that the vortex itself has a helical internal structure characterized by a Hopf invariant (a topological invariant). We also discuss that the hydrodynamics of such a helical vortex causes the parity violation to retain the topological invariant.

Moments of inertia of relativistic magnetized stars

We consider principal moments of inertia of axisymmetric, magnetically deformed stars in the context of general relativity. The general expression for the moment of inertia with respect to the symmetric axis is obtained. The numerical estimates are derived for several polytropic stellar models. We find that the values of the principal moments of inertia are modified by a factor of 2 at most from Newtonian estimates.

Flattening modulus of a neutron star by rotation and magnetic field

We calculated the ellipticity of the deformed star due to the rotation or magnetic field. These two effects are compared to each other within general relativity. It turned out that the magnetic distortion is important for recently observed candidates of magnetars, while the magnetic effect can be neglected for well-known typical pulsars.

Deformation of relativistic magnetized stars

We formulate deformation of relativistic stars due to the magnetic stress, considering the magnetic fields to be perturbations from spherical stars. The ellipticity for the dipole magnetic field is calculated for some stellar models. We have found that the ellipticity becomes large with increase of a relativistic factor for the models with the same energy ratio of the magnetic energy to the gravitational energy.
