Coupled pair of one and two dimensional magneto-plasmons on electrons on helium

Electrons on the liquid helium surface form an extremely clean two dimensional system where different plasmon-excitations can coexist. Under a magnetic field time reversal symmetry is broken and all the bulk magneto-plasmons become gaped at frequencies below cyclotron resonance while chiral one dimensional edge magneto-plasmons appear at the system perimeter. We theoretically show that the presence of a homogeneous density gradient in the electron gas leads to the formation of a delocalized magneto-plasmon mode in the same frequency range as the lowest frequency edge-magnetoplasmon mode. We experimentally confirm its existence by measuring the corresponding resonance peak in frequency dependence of the admittance of the electron gas. This allows to realize a prototype system to investigate the coupling between a chiral one-dimensional mode and a single delocalized bulk mode. Such a model system can be important for the understanding of transport properties of topological materials where states of different dimensionality can coexist.

Zero-phonon lines in the spectra of dysprosium atoms in superfluid helium

We present an experimental study of a zero-phonon line (ZPL) in the absorption spectrum of Dy atoms solvated in superfluid He. The dopants reside in nanometer-sized spherical cavities known as atomic bubbles. We observe a temperature-dependent broadening of ZPL in the absorption spectrum. The effect is attributed to the scattering of thermal phonons on the atomic bubble that leads to the dephasing of the Dy transition dipole. The extrapolated ZPL intrinsic spectral width at zero temperature is 2300 times larger than the natural linewidth in a free atom. This can be assigned to a fast radiationless quenching of the upper state of the studied transition.

Dynamics of fine particles due to quantized vortices on the surface of superfluid $^4$He

Peculiar dynamics of a free surface of the superfluid 4He has been observed experimentally with a newly established technique utilizing a number of electrically charged fine metal particles trapped electrically at the surface by Moroshkin et al. They have reported that some portion of the particles exhibit some irregular motions and suggested the existence of quantized vortices interacting with the metal particles. We have conducted calculations with the vortex filament model, which turns out to support the idea of the vortex-particle interactions. The observed anomalous metal particle motions are roughly categorized into two types; (1) circular motions with specific frequencies, and (2) quasi-linear oscillations. The former ones seem to be explained once we consider a vertical vortex filament whose edges are terminated at the bottom and at a particle trapped at the surface. Although it is not yet clear whether all the anomalous motions are due to the quantum vortices, the vortices seem to play important roles for the motions.

Dynamics of the vortex-particle complexes bound to the free surface of superfluid helium

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the 2D dynamics of electrically charged nanoparticles trapped under a free surface of superfluid helium in a static vertical electric field. We focus on the dynamics of particles driven by the interaction with quantized vortices terminating at the free surface. We identify two types of particle trajectories and the associated vortex structures: vertical linear vortices pinned at the bottom of the container and half-ring vortices travelling along the free surface of the liquid.

Ripplonic Lamb shift for electrons on liquid helium

We study the shift of the energy levels of electrons on helium surface due to the coupling to the quantum field of surface vibrations. As in quantum electrodynamics, the coupling is known, and it is known to lead to an ultraviolet divergence of the level shifts. We show that there are diverging terms of different nature and use the Bethe-type approach to show that they cancel each other, to the leading-order. This resolves the long-standing theoretical controversy and explains the existing experiments. The results allow us to study the temperature dependence of the level shift. The predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Quantized escape and formation of edge channels at high Landau levels

We present nonlocal resistance measurements in an ultra high mobility two dimensional electron gas. Our experiments show that even at weak magnetic fields classical guiding along edges leads to a strong non local resistance on macroscopic distances. In this high Landau level regime the transport along edges is dissipative and can be controlled by the amplitude of the voltage drop along the edge. We report resonances in the nonlocal transport as a function of this voltage that are interpreted as escape and formation of edge channels.

Bistability and Hysteresis of Intersubband Absorption in Strongly Interacting Electrons on Liquid Helium

We study nonlinear inter-subband microwave absorption of electrons bound to the liquid helium surface. Already for a comparatively low radiation intensity, resonant absorption due to transitions between the two lowest subbands is accompanied by electron overheating. The overheating results in a significant population of higher subbands. The Coulomb interaction between electrons causes a shift of the resonant frequency, which depends on the population of the excited states and thus on the electron temperature $T_e$. The latter is determined experimentally from the electron photoconductivity. The experimentally established relationship between the frequency shift and $T_e$ is in reasonable agreement with the theory. The dependence of the shift on the radiation intensity introduces nonlinearity into the rate of the inter-subband absorption resulting in bistability and hysteresis of the resonant response. The hysteresis of the response explains the behavior in the regime of frequency modulation, which we observe for electrons on liquid $^3$He and which was previously seen for electrons on liquid $^4$He.

NMR of 3He in contact with PrF3 nanoparticles at low temperatures

Two nanosized PrF3 samples were synthesized using two different procedures. The X-ray and HRTEM experiments showed high crystallinity of synthesized sample. Comparison of enhanced 141Pr NMR spectra of microsized (45 $μ$m) and nanosized PrF3 powder is presented. Experimental data on spin kinetics of 3He in contact with PrF3 nanoparticles at T = 1.5 K are reported.

Cotunneling effects in GaAs vertical double quantum dot

We observed lifting of Coulomb blockade in GaAs vertical double quantum dot with low potential barriers, induced by cotunneling mechanisms at dilution fridge temperature of 10 mK. Several distinct features were observed, compared to single dot case, and appropriate explanation for them was given

Spin bottleneck in resonant tunneling through double quantum dots with different Zeeman splittings

We investigated the electron transport property of the InGaAs/GaAs double quantum dots, the electron g-factors of which are different from each other. We found that in a magnetic field, the resonant tunneling is suppressed even if one of the Zeeman sublevels is aligned. This is because the other misaligned Zeeman sublevels limit the total current. A finite broadening of the misaligned sublevel partially relieves this bottleneck effect, and the maximum current is reached when interdot detuning is half the Zeeman energy difference.

Tuning of metal-insulator transition of two-dimensional electrons at parylene/SrTiO$_3$ interface by electric field

Electrostatic carrier doping using a field-effect-transistor structure is an intriguing approach to explore electronic phases by critical control of carrier concentration. We demonstrate the reversible control of the insulator-metal transition (IMT) in a two dimensional (2D) electron gas at the interface of insulating SrTiO$_3$ single crystals. Superconductivity was observed in a limited number of devices doped far beyond the IMT, which may imply the presence of 2D metal-superconductor transition. This realization of a two-dimensional metallic state on the most widely-used perovskite oxide is the best manifestation of the potential of oxide electronics.

Observation of strong electron dephasing in disordered Cu$_{93}$Ge$_4$Au$_3$ thin films

We report the observation of strong electron dephasing in a series of disordered Cu$_{93}$Ge$_4$Au$_3$ thin films. A very short electron dephasing time possessing very weak temperature dependence around 6 K, followed by an upturn with further decrease in temperature below 4 K, is found. The upturn is progressively more pronounced in more disordered samples. Moreover, a ln$T$ dependent, but high-magnetic-field-insensitive, resistance rise persisting from above 10 K down to 30 mK is observed in the films. These results suggest a nonmagnetic dephasing process which is stronger than any known mechanism and may originate from the coupling of conduction electrons to dynamic defects.
