Development of a 32-channel ASIC for an X-ray APD Detector onboard the ISS

We report on the design and performance of a mixed-signal application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) dedicated to avalanche photodiodes (APDs) in order to detect hard X-ray emissions in a wide energy band onboard the International Space Station. To realize wide-band detection from 20 keV to 1 MeV, we use Ce:GAGG scintillators, each coupled to an APD, with low-noise front-end electronics capable of achieving a minimum energy detection threshold of 20 keV. The developed ASIC has the ability to read out 32-channel APD signals using 0.35 $μ$m CMOS technology, and an analog amplifier at the input stage is designed to suppress the capacitive noise primarily arising from the large detector capacitance of the APDs. The ASIC achieves a performance of 2099 e$^{-}$ + 1.5 e$^{-}$/pF at root mean square (RMS) with a wide 300 fC dynamic range. Coupling a reverse-type APD with a Ce:GAGG scintillator, we obtain an energy resolution of 6.7% (FWHM) at 662 keV and a minimum detectable energy of 20 keV at room temperature (20 $^{\circ}$C). Furthermore, we examine the radiation tolerance for space applications by using a 90 MeV proton beam, confirming that the ASIC is free of single-event effects and can operate properly without serious degradation in analog and digital processing.

Challenge on Ca-48 enrichment for CANDLES double beta decay experiment

Chemical isotope effects of calcium were studied by liquid-liquid extraction using a crown ether of dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 for the purpose of finding a cost-effective and efficient way of enrichment of Ca-48 towards the study of the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ca-48. We evaluated each contribution ratio of the field shift effect and the hyperfine splitting shift effect to the mass effect of the calcium isotopes for the first time. The present preliminary result suggests the contribution of the field shift effect is small, especially for Ca-40-Ca-48 case, compared with the case of Chromium trichloride-crown in which the isotope enrichment factors are strongly affected by the field shifts. These indications are promising towards the mass producion of enriched Ca-48 by the chemical separation method.

Residual interaction effects on deeply bound pionic states in Sn and Pb isotopes

We have studied the residual interaction effects theoretically on the deeply bound pionic states in Pb and Sn isotopes. We need to evaluate the residual interaction effects carefully in order to deduce the nuclear medium effects for pion properties, which are believed to provide valuable information on nuclear chiral dynamics. The s- and p-wave $π-N$ interactions are used for the pion-nucleon residual interactions. We show that the complex energy shifts are around [(10-20)+i(2-7)]keV for 1s states in Sn, which should be taken into account in the analyses of the high precision data of deeply bound pionic $1s$ states in Sn isotopes.

Pionic Atom Formation in Halo Nuclei by (d,3He) Reactions

We investigate the formation cross sections of the deeply bound pionic atoms on halo nuclei theoretically. We consider one-neutron pick-up (d,3He) reaction for the pionic atom formation and find that the formation rate is significantly increased by the existence of the halo neutron with long tail of the wave function. This enhancement is expected to increase the experimental feasibility for the formation of the deeply bound pionic states on beta-unstable nuclei.

Photon Absorption on a Neutron-Proton Pair in 3He and 4He

We have developed a phenomenological quasi-deuteron model to describe photodisintegration reactions of $^3$He and $^4$He at intermediate photon energies, and compared the results with experimental data obtained by TAGX group in which contributions from photon absorption by $pn$ pair were selectively observed. The data can be reproduced reasonably well, however there still remain certain discrepancies between calculated results and data.

Nuclear Quadrupole Effects in Deeply Bound Pionic Atoms

We have studied nuclear quadrupole deformation effects in deeply bound pionic atoms theoretically. We have evaluated the level shifts and widths of the hyperfine components using the first order perturbation theory and compared them with the effects of neutron skin. We conclude that the nuclear quadrupole deformation effects for deeply bound $1s$ and $2p$ states are very difficult to observe and that the effects could be observed for $3d$ states. We also conclude that the deformation effects are sensitive to the parameters of the pion-nucleus optical potential.
