Correlation in transport coefficients of hole-doped CuRhO$_2$ single crystals

To clarify the origin of the nontrivial thermoelectric properties observed in the delafossite oxide CuRhO$_2$ polycrystals, we have performed the systematic transport measurements on the single-crystalline CuRhO$_2$ samples. In the parent compound, we find a pronounced peak structure due to a phonon-drag effect in the temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient, which is also confirmed by the size effect experiments. In the Mg-substituted crystals, in contrast to the results of the polycrystals, both the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient decrease with increasing Mg content $y$. In particular, the coefficient $A$ for the $T^2$ term of the resistivity and the $T$-linear coefficient for the Seebeck coefficient at low temperatures are well described within a simple relationship expected for metals, which is also applicable to the correlated materials with low carrier densities.

First elastic electron scattering from $^{132}$Xe at the SCRIT facility

The first elastic electron scattering has been successfully performed at the self-confining RI ion target (SCRIT) facility, the world's first electron scattering facility for exotic nuclei. The SCRIT technique achieved high luminosity (over 10$^{27}$~cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, sufficient for determining the nuclear shape) with only 10$^8$ target ions. While $^{132}$Xe used in this time as a target is stable isotope, the charge density distribution was firstly extracted from the momentum transfer distributions of the scattered electrons by comparing the results with those calculated by a phase shift calculation.

Proton-proton correlations in distinguishing the two-proton emission mechanism of $^{23}$Al and $^{22}$Mg

The proton-proton momentum correlation functions ($C_{pp}(q)$) for kinematically complete decay channels of $^{23}$Al $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{21}$Na and $^{22}$Mg $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{20}$Ne have been measured at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. From the very different correlation strength of $C_{pp}(q)$ for $^{23}$Al and $^{22}$Mg, the source size and emission time information were extracted from the $C_{pp}(q)$ data by assuming a Gaussian source profile in the correlation function calculation code (CRAB). The results indicated that the mechanism of two-proton emission from $^{23}$Al was mainly sequential emission, while that of $^{22}$Mg was mainly three-body simultaneous emission. By combining our earlier results of the two-proton relative momentum and the opening angle, it is pointed out that the mechanism of two-proton emission could be distinguished clearly.

Different mechanism of two-proton emission from proton-rich nuclei $^{23}$Al and $^{22}$Mg

Two-proton relative momentum ($q_{pp}$) and opening angle ($θ_{pp}$) distributions from the three-body decay of two excited proton-rich nuclei, namely $^{23}$Al $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{21}$Na and $^{22}$Mg $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{20}$Ne, have been measured with the projectile fragment separator (RIPS) at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. An evident peak at $q_{pp}\sim20$ MeV/c as well as a peak in $θ_{pp}$ around 30$^\circ$ are seen in the two-proton break-up channel from a highly-excited $^{22}$Mg. In contrast, such peaks are absent for the $^{23}$Al case. It is concluded that the two-proton emission mechanism of excited $^{22}$Mg is quite different from the $^{23}$Al case, with the former having a favorable diproton emission component at a highly excited state and the latter dominated by the sequential decay process.

Hindered proton collectivity in 28S: Possible magic number at Z=16

The reduced transition probability B(E2;0 ->2+) for 28S was obtained experimentally using Coulomb excitation at 53 MeV/nucleon. The resultant B(E2) value 181(31) e2fm4 is smaller than the expectation based on empirical B(E2) systematics. The double ratio |M_n/M_p|/(N/Z) of the 0+ ->2+ transition in 28S was determined to be 1.9(2) by evaluating the M_n value from the known B(E2) value of the mirror nucleus 28Mg, showing the hindrance of proton collectivity relative to that of neutrons. These results indicate the emergence of the magic number Z=16 in the |T_z|=2 nucleus 28S.

Enhanced collectivity in 74Ni

The neutron-rich nucleus 74Ni was studied with inverse-kinematics inelastic proton scattering using a 74Ni radioactive beam incident on a liquid hydrogen targetat a center-of-mass energy of 80 MeV. From the measured de-excitation gamma-rays, the population of the first 2+ state was quantified. The angle-integrated excitation cross section was determined to be 14(4) mb. A deformation length of delta = 1.04(16) fm was extracted in comparison with distorted wave theory, which suggests that the enhancement of collectivity established for 70Ni continues up to 74Ni. A comparison with results of shell model and quasi-particle random phase approximation calculations indicates that the magic character of Z = 28 or N = 50 is weakened in 74Ni.

Low-lying Proton Intruder State in 13B

The neturon rich nucleus 13B was studied via the proton transfer reaction 4He(12Be,13B γ) at 50AMeV. The known 4.83-MeV excited state was strongly populated and its spin and parity were assigned to 1/2+ by comparing the angular differential cross section data with DWBA calculations. This low-lying 1/2+ state is interpreted as a proton intruder state and indicates a deformation of the nucleus.

Lifetime measurements of first excited states in 16,18C

The electric quadrupole transition from the first 2+ state to the ground 0+ state in 18C was studied through lifetime measurement by an upgraded recoil shadow method applied to inelastically scattered radioactive 18C nuclei. The measured mean lifetime is 18.9 +/- 0.9 (stat) +/- 4.4 (syst) ps, corresponding to a B(E2;2+ -> 0+) value of 4.3 +/- 0.2 +/- 1.0 e2fm4, or about 1.5 Weisskopf units. The mean lifetime of the first 2+ state in 16C was remeasured to be 18.0 +/- 1.6 +/- 4.7 ps, about four times shorter than the value reported previously. The discrepancy between the two results was resolved by incorporating the gamma-ray angular distribution measured in this work into the previous measurement. These transition strengths are hindered compared to the empirical transition strengths, indicating that the anomalous hindrance observed in 16C persists in 18C.

Radiation Damage Study for PHENIX Silicon Stripixel Sensors

Silicon stripixel sensors which were developed at BNL will be installed as part of the RHIC-PHENIX silicon vertex tracker (VTX). RHIC II operations provide luminosity up to 2x10^32 /cm2/s so the silicon stripixel sensors will be exposed to a significant amount of radiation. The most problematic radiation effect for VTX is the increase of leakage current, which degrades the signal to noise ratio and may saturate the readout electronics. We studied the radiation damage using the same diodes as CERN-RD48. First, the proportionality between the irradiation fluence and the increase of leakage current of CERN-RD48 was reproduced. Then beam experiments with stripixel sensor were done in which leakage current was found to increase in the same way as that of thereference diode. A stripixel sensor was also irradiated at the PHENIX interaction region (IR) during the 2006 run. We found the same relation between the integrated luminosity and determined fluence from increase of leakage current. The expected fluence is 3-6x10^12 Neq/cm2 (1 MeV neutron equivalent) in RHIC II operations for 10 years. Due to this expected exposure, setting the operating temperature in PHENIX to T< 0 deg. C to suppress leakage current is needed to avoid saturation of preamplifiers.

Measurement of the analyzing power of proton-carbon elastic scattering in the CNI region at RHIC

The single transverse spin asymmetry, A_N, of the p-carbon elastic scattering process in the Coulomb Nuclear Interference (CNI) region was measured using an ultra thin carbon target and polarized proton beam in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). In 2004, data were collected to calibrate the p-carbon process at two RHIC energies (24 GeV, 100 GeV). A_N was obtained as a function of momentum transfer -t. The results were fit with theoretical models which allow us to assess the contribution from a hadronic spin flip amplitude.

Anomalously hindered E2 strength B(E2;2_1^+ -> 0^+) in 16C

The electric quadrupole transition from the first 2+ state to the ground 0+ state in 16C is studied through measurement of the lifetime by a recoil shadow method applied to inelastically scattered radioactive 16C nuclei. The measured lifetime is 75 +- 23 ps, corresponding to a B(E2;2_1+ -> 0^+) value of 0.63 +- 0.19 e2fm4, or 0.26 +- 0.08 Weisskopf units. The transition strength is found to be anomalously small compared to the empirically predicted value.

Measurement of Analyzing Power for Proton-Carbon Elastic Scattering in the Coulomb-Nuclear Interference Region with a 22-GeV/c Polarized Proton Beam

The analyzing power for proton-carbon elastic scattering in the coulomb-nuclear interference region of momentum transfer, $9.0\times10^{-3}<-t<4.1\times10^{-2}$ (GeV/$c)^{2}$, was measured with a 21.7 GeV/$c$ polarized proton beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The ratio of hadronic spin-flip to non-flip amplitude, $r_5$, was obtained from the analyzing power to be $\text{Re} r_5=0.088\pm 0.058$ and $\text{Im} r_5=-0.161\pm 0.226$.
