Strong spin resonance on BaFe2(As0.65P0.35)2 with Tc = 30 K

We performed inelastic neutron scattering on powder sample of the P-doped iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As0.65P0.35)2 with Tc = 30K, whose superconducting (SC) order parameter is expected to have line nodes. We have observed spin resonance at Q $\sim$ 1.2Å^{-1} and E=12 meV in the SC state. The resonance enhancement, which can be a measure of the area of sign reversal between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs), is comparable to those of other iron-based superconductors without line nodes. This fact indicates that the sign reversal between the FSs is still dominant in this system, and the line nodes should create only limited area of sign-reversal on a single FS. Hence the system can hold relatively high-Tc. Comparison with theoretical calculation indicates horizontal line nodes may be a candidate to reproduce the observation.

Reply to Comment on "Unconventional s-wave superconductivity in Fe(Se,Te)"

Mazin and Singh comment that the peaks in the Fourier-transformed spectroscopic maps of Fe(Se,Te) are not related to the quasi-particle-interference (QPI) but may be Bragg peaks associated with chalcogen lattice and possible surface reconstruction which would be triggered by surface-induced spin-density wave. We show that the peaks are too broad to be assigned as Bragg peaks and are consistent with QPI.

Thermoelectric figure of merit of tau-type conductors of several donors

Dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit $ZT$ is investigated for two-dimensional organic conductors $τ-(EDO-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y}$, $τ$-(EDT-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y}$ and $τ$-(P-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y}$ ($y \le 0.875$), respectively. The $ZT$ values were estimated by measuring electrical resistivity, thermopower and thermal conductivity simultaneously. The largest $ZT$ is 2.7 $\times$ 10$^{-2}$ at 155 K for $τ-(EDT-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y}$, 1.5 $\times$ 10$^{-2}$ at 180 K for $τ-(EDO-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y}$ and 5.4 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ at 78 K for $τ-(P-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y}$, respectively. Substitution of the donor molecules fixing the counter anion revealed EDT-S,S-DMEDT-TTF is the best of the three donors to obtain larger $ZT$.

The LDA+DMFT route to identify good thermoelectrics

For technical applications thermoelectric materials with a high figure of merit are desirable, and strongly correlated electron systems are very promising in this respect. Since effects of bandstructure_and_ electronic correlations play an important role for getting large figure of merits, the combination of local density approximation_and_ dynamical mean field theory is an ideal tool for the computational materials design of new thermoelectrics as well as to help us understand the mechanisms leading to large figures of merits in certain materials. This conference proceedings provides for a brief introduction to the method and reviews recent results for LiRh_2O_4.

Origin of large thermopower in LiRh$_2$O$_4$

Motivated by the newly synthesized mixed-valent spinel LiRh$_2$O$_4$ for which a large thermopower is observed in the metallic cubic phase above 230K [Okamoto {\it et al.} (arXiv:0806.2504)], we calculate the Seebeck coefficient by the combination of local density approximation and dynamical mean field theory (LDA+DMFT). The experimental values are well reproduced not only by LDA+DMFT but also by the less involved Boltzmann equation approach. A careful analysis of the latter shows unexpectedly that the origin of the large thermopower shares a common root with a very different oxide: Na$_x$CoO$_2$. We also discuss how it is possible to further increase the powerfactor of LiRh$_2$O$_4$ through doping, which makes the material even more promoising for technological applications.

Sr$_2$(Ba$_2$)VO$_4$ under pressure -- an orbital switch and potential $d^1$ superconductor

We study Sr$_2$(Ba$_2$)VO$_4$ under high pressure by means of the local density approximation + dynamical mean field theory method. While Sr$_2$VO$_4$ is a 1/6-filling three-band system at ambient pressure with a small level splitting between the $d_{xy}$- and $d_{yz/zx}$-bands, we show that an orbital polarization occurs under uniaxial pressure, resulting in dramatic changes of the magnetic, optical, and transport properties. When pressure is applied in the $c$-direction, a $d^1$ analog of $d^9$ cuprates is realized, making Sr$_2$(Ba$_2$)VO$_4$ a possible candidate for a $d^1$ superconductor. Experimentally, this uniaxial pressure can be realized by growing Ba$_2$VO$_4$ on a substrate with lattice constant 4.1-4.2 Å.

Microscopic theory of spin-triplet $f$-wave pairing in quasi-1D organic superconductors

We present a microscopic theory of fluctuation-mediated pairing mechanism in organic superconductors ${(TMTSF)}_{2}X$, where the experimentally observed coexistence of $2k_{F}$ charge fluctuation and $2k_{F}$ spin fluctuation is naturally taken into account. We have studied, within the random phase approximation, the extended Hubbard model at quarter-filling on a quasi-one-dimensional lattice, where we consider the off-site repulsive interaction up to third next nearest neighbors along with the on-site repulsion. The results show that spin-triplet $f$-wave-like pairing can be realized in this system, dominating over singlet d-wave-like pairing, if $2k_F$ spin and $2k_F$ charge fluctuations coexist.

Josephson effect in quasi one-dimensional unconventional superconductors

Josephson effect in junctions of quasi one-dimensional triangular lattice superconductors is discussed, where the theoretical model corresponds to organic superconductors (TMTSF)_2PF_6. We assume the quarter-filling electron band and p, d and f wave like pairing symmetries in organic superconductors. To realize the electronic structures in organic superconductors, we introduce the asymmetric hopping integral, (t') among second nearest lattice sites. At t'=0, the Josephson current in the d wave symmetry saturates in low temperatures, whereas those in the p and the f wave symmetries show the low-temperature anomaly due to the zero-energy state at the junction interfaces. The low-temperature anomaly appears even in the d wave symmetry in the presence of t', whereas the anomaly is suppressed in the f wave symmetry. The shape of the Fermi surface is an important factor for the formation of the ZES in the quarter-filling electron systems.

Electronic structure of periodic curved surfaces -- continuous surface versus graphitic sponge

We investigate the band structure of electrons bound on periodic curved surfaces. We have formulated Schrödinger's equation with the Weierstrass representation when the surface is minimal, which is numerically solved. Bands and the Bloch wavefunctions are basically determined by the way in which the ``pipes'' are connected into a network, where the Bonnet(conformal)-transformed surfaces have related electronic strucutres. We then examine, as a realisation of periodic surfaces, the tight-binding model for atomic networks (``sponges''), where the low-energy spectrum coincides with those for continuous curved surfaces.

Electronic Structure of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ States in MgB$_2$, AlB$_2$ and ZrB$_2$ Single Crystals

The effect of electron correlation (EC) on the electronic structure in MgB$_2$, AlB$_2$ and ZrB$_2$, is studied by examining the partial density of states (PDOS) of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ orbitals using the polarization dependence of x-ray emission and absorption spectra. The discrepancies between observed and calculated PDOSs cannot be attributed to EC effects. The present results suggest that the EC effect is less than the experimental error ($\sim$ 0.2 eV), which indirectly supports a scenario that electron-phonon interaction plays an essential role in the occurrence of superconductivity.

Zero-bias conductance peak splitting due to multiband effect in tunneling spectroscopy

We study how the multiplicity of the Fermi surface affects the zero-bias peak in conductance spectra of tunneling spectroscopy. As case studies, we consider models for organic superconductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ and (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$. We find that multiplicity of the Fermi surfaces can lead to a splitting of the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP). We propose that the presence/absence of the ZBCP splitting is used as a probe to distinguish the pairing symmetry in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$.

Superconductivity in repulsive electron systems having three-dimensional disconnected Fermi surfaces

The idea of raising Tc in the spin-fluctuation mediated superconductivity on disconnected Fermi surfaces with the gap function changing sign across but not within the Fermi pockets, proposed by Kuroki and Arita for two dimensions (2D), is here extended to three-dimensional (3D) systems. Two typical cases of 3D disconnected Fermi surfaces (stacked bond-alternating lattice and stacked ladder layers) are considered. By solving Eliashberg's equation for Green's function obtained with the fluctuation exchange approximation (FLEX) for the repulsive Hubbard model on these structures, we have shown that Tc can indeed reach O(0.01t), which is almost an order of magnitude higher than in ordinary 3D cases and similar to those for the best case found in 2D. The key factor found here for the favorable condition for the superconductivity on disconnected Fermi surfaces is that the system should be quasi-low dimensional, and the peak in the spin susceptibility should be appropriately "blurred".

Possible anomalous Doppler shift effect in superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$

The effect of the Doppler shift is studied in a model for the $α$-$β$ bands of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ consisting of two hybridized 1D bands. Assuming a superconducting gap with nodes in the diagonal directions, we examine the oscillation of the surface density of states and the thermal conductivity under a rotating magnetic field. Upon varying the strength of the hybridization, the oscillation in these quantities is found to exhibit 2D to 1D crossover. In the crossover regime, which corresponds to the actual Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, the thermal conductivity exhibits a two-fold-symmetry oscillation, while the four-fold-symmetry component in the oscillation is barely detectable.

Magnetotunneling spectroscopy as a probe for pairing symmetry determination in quasi-2D anisotropic superconductors

As a probe to determine the pairing symmetry of quasi-two-dimensional anisotropic superconductors, we propose tunneling spectroscopy in the presence of magnetic field, where the magnetic field is parallel to the two dimensional planes and rotated. As a case study, we apply this idea to the models of high-$T_{C}$ cuprates and organic superconductors $κ$-(ET)$_2X$. The surface density of states at the Fermi energy exhibits a characteristic oscillation upon rotating the direction of the magnetic field due to the Doppler shift of the energy of quasiparticles. The surface density of states has a minimum when the applied magnetic field is parallel to the node direction of the pair potential independent of the detailed shape of the Fermi surface. The amplitude of the oscillation is sensitively affected by the shape of Fermi surface.

Theory of magnetotunneling spectroscopy in spin triplet p-wave superconductors

We study the influence of a magnetic field $H$ on the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) due to zero-energy Andreev bound state (ZES) in normal metal / unconventional superconductor. For p-wave junctions, ZBCP does not split into two by $H$ even for sufficiently low transparent junctions, where ZBCP clearly splits for d-wave. This unique property originates from the fact that for p-wave superconductors, perpendicularly injected quasiparticle form ZES, which contribute most dominantly on the tunneling conductance. In addition, we show that for $p_{x}$+i$p_{y}$-wave superconductor junctions, the height of ZBCP is sensitive to $H$ due to the formation of broken time reversal symmetry state. We propose that tunneling spectroscopy in the presence of magnetic field, $i.e.$, $magnetotunneling$, is an promising method to determine the pairing symmetry of unconventional superconductors.

Tomography of pairing symmetry from magnetotunneling spectroscopy -- a case study for quasi-1D organic superconductors

We propose that anisotropic $p$-, $d$-, or $f$-wave pairing symmetries can be distinguished from a tunneling spectroscopy in the presence of magnetic fields, which is exemplified here for a model organic superconductor ${(TMTSF)}_{2}X$. The shape of the Fermi surface (quasi-one-dimensional in this example) affects sensitively the pairing symmetry, which in turn affects the shape (U or V) of the gap along with the presence/absence of the zero-bias peak in the tunneling in a subtle manner. Yet, an application of a magnetic field enables us to identify the symmetry, which is interpreted as an effect of the Doppler shift in Andreev bound states.

Phase Diagram for the Hofstadter butterfly and integer quantum Hall effect in three dimensions

We give a perspective on the Hofstadter butterfly (fractal energy spectrum in magnetic fields), which we have shown to arise specifically in three-dimensional(3D) systems in our previous work. (i) We first obtain the `phase diagram' on a parameter space of the transfer energies and the magnetic field for the appearance of Hofstadter's butterfly spectrum in anisotropic crystals in 3D. (ii) We show that the orientation of the external magnetic field can be arbitrary to have the 3D butterfly. (iii) We show that the butterfly is beyond the semiclassical description. (iv) The required magnetic field for a representative organic metal is estimated to be modest ($\sim 40$ T) if we adopt higher Landau levels for the butterfly. (v) We give a simpler way of deriving the topological invariants that represent the quantum Hall numbers (i.e., two Hall conductivity in 3D, $σ_{xy}, σ_{zx}$, in units of $e^2/h$).

Soft x-ray spectroscopy experiments on the near K-edge of B in MB2 (M=Mg, Al, Ta, and Nb)

Soft X-ray absorption and emission measurements are performed for the K- edge of B in MB$_2$ (M=Mg, Al, Ta and Nb). Unique feature of MgB$_2$ with a high density of B 2$p_{xy}(σ)$-state below and above the Fermi edge, which extends to 1 eV above the edge, is confirmed. In contrast, the B 2$p$ density of states in AlB$_2$ and TaB$_2$, both of occupied and unoccupied states, decreased linearly towards the Fermi energy and showed a dip at the Fermi energy. Furthermore, there is a broadening of the peaks with $pσ$-character in XES and XAS of AlB$_2$, which is due to the increase of three dimensionality in the $pσ$-band in AlB$_2$. The DOS of NbB$_2$ has a dip just below the Fermi energy. The present results indicate that the large DOS of B-2$pσ$ states near the Fermi energy are crucial for the superconductivity of MgB$_2$.
