Forward Jets and Energy Flow in Hadronic Collisions

We observe that at the Large Hadron Collider, using forward + central detectors, it becomes possible for the first time to carry out calorimetric measurements of the transverse energy flow due to "minijets" accompanying production of two jets separated by a large rapidity interval. We present parton-shower calculations of energy flow observables in a high-energy factorized Monte Carlo framework, designed to take into account QCD logarithmic corrections both in the large rapidity interval and in the hard transverse momentum. Considering events with a forward and a central jet, we examine the energy flow in the interjet region and in the region away from the jets. We discuss the role of these observables to analyze multiple parton collision effects.

Transverse Energy Flow with Forward and Central Jets at the LHC

At the LHC, using forward + central detectors, it becomes possible for the first time to carry out measurements of the transverse energy flow due to ``minijets" accompanying production of two jets separated by a large rapidity interval. We discuss parton-shower calculations of energy flow observables in a high-energy factorized Monte Carlo framework, and comment on the role of these observables to study high parton multiplicity effects.

Forward-Central Jet Correlations at the Large Hadron Collider

For high-pT forward processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), QCD logarithmic corrections in the hard transverse momentum and in the large rapidity interval may both be quantitatively significant. The theoretical framework to resum consistently both kinds of logarithmic corrections to higher orders in perturbation theory is based on QCD high-energy factorization. We present numerical Monte Carlo applications of this method to final-state observables associated with production of one forward and one central jet. By computing jet correlations in rapidity and azimuth, we analyze the role of corrections to the parton-showering chain from large-angle gluon radiation, and discuss this in relationship with Monte Carlo results modeling interactions due to multiple parton chains.

The CCFM Monte Carlo generator CASCADE 2.2.0

CASCADE is a full hadron level Monte Carlo event generator for ep, γp and p\bar{p} and pp processes, which uses the CCFM evolution equation for the initial state cascade in a backward evolution approach supplemented with off - shell matrix elements for the hard scattering. A detailed program description is given, with emphasis on parameters the user wants to change and variables which completely specify the generated events.

Parton showering effects in central heavy-boson hadroproduction

If large-angle multigluon radiation contributes significantly to parton showers associated with heavy boson production at the LHC, appropriate parton branching methods are required for realistic Monte Carlo simulations of final states. We report on a study illustrating such effects in the case of central scalar-boson production. We comment on the possible impact of such studies on the modeling of multi-parton interactions.

Studies of forward jets and production of W, Z bosons at LHC energies

We report on application of QCD in calculations of forward jet and W, Z boson production cross sections at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular in case of jet production we emphasize dynamical features of the matrix elements controlling the resummation of logarithmically enhanced corrections in $\sqrt{s}/E_T$, where $E_T$ is the jet production transverse energy. In case of production of W, Z bosons we focus on angular correlations between produced boson and hardest associated jet.

Forward Jet Production at the Large Hadron Collider

At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) it will become possible for the first time to investigate experimentally the forward region in hadron-hadron collisions via high-$p_T$ processes. In the LHC forward kinematics QCD logarithmic corrections in the hard transverse momentum and in the large rapidity interval may both be quantitatively significant. We analyze the hadroproduction of forward jets in the framework of QCD high-energy factorization, which allows one to resum consistently both kinds of corrections to higher orders in QCD perturbation theory. We compute the short-distance matrix elements needed to evaluate the factorization formula at fully exclusive level. We discuss numerically dynamical features of multi-gluon emission at large angle encoded in the factorizing high-energy amplitudes.

Jets in the forward region at the LHC

We discuss jet production at forward rapidities at the LHC. In this region QCD logarithmic corrections in the hard transverse momentum and in the large rapidity interval may both be quantitatively significant. We describe results of using high-energy factorization techniques, which allow one to take into account both kinds of corrections to higher orders in QCD.

An approach to fast fits of the unintegrated gluon density

An approach to fast fits of the unintegrated gluon density has been developed and used to determine the unintegrated gluon density by fits to deep inelastic scatting di-jet data from HERA. The fitting method is based on the determination of the parameter dependence by help of interpolating between grid points in the parameter-observable space before the actual fit is performed.

HERA and the LHC - A workshop on the implications of HERA for LHC physics: Proceedings - Part B

The HERA electron--proton collider has collected 100 pb$^{-1}$ of data since its start-up in 1992, and recently moved into a high-luminosity operation mode, with upgraded detectors, aiming to increase the total integrated luminosity per experiment to more than 500 pb$^{-1}$. HERA has been a machine of excellence for the study of QCD and the structure of the proton. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will collide protons with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, will be completed at CERN in 2007. The main mission of the LHC is to discover and study the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking, possibly via the discovery of the Higgs particle, and search for new physics in the TeV energy scale, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Besides these goals, the LHC will also make a substantial number of precision measurements and will offer a new regime to study the strong force via perturbative QCD processes and diffraction. For the full LHC physics programme a good understanding of QCD phenomena and the structure function of the proton is essential. Therefore, in March 2004, a one-year-long workshop started to study the implications of HERA on LHC physics. This included proposing new measurements to be made at HERA, extracting the maximum information from the available data, and developing/improving the theoretical and experimental tools. This report summarizes the results achieved during this workshop.

Heavy Quarks: Summary Report

The present status of the heavy-quark production theory is critically reviewed in the first contribution. The second contribution summarises the present heavy flavour data from HERA and gives an outlook of what can be expected from HERA-II. The potential of the LHC experiments for charm and beauty physics is reviewed in the 3rd contribution. Then the relevance of saturation and small-x effects to heavy quark production at HERA and at the LHC are discussed. The non-perturbative aspects of heavy-quark fragmentation and their relevance to HERA and LHC are discussed in the next contribution. Finally, a comparison of different theoretical predictions for HERA and LHC based on different approaches is presented.

Exclusive Higgs boson production at the LHC: hard rescattering corrections

We examine, as a correction to the central exclusive Higgs boson production in $pp$ collisions at the LHC, the rescattering of gluonic ladders off the proton. As usual, at the lowest order the hard part of this process can be described as a fusion of two hard gluonic ladders. We calculate corrections to this hard amplitude which are due to rescattering of these ladders. These corrections, which contain high mass diffractive excitations of the proton, have not yet been taken into account by the usual soft survival probabilities. We find that the correction due to the exchange of a single hard rescattering is negative, large and infrared sensitive. As a first step towards a more reliable description we therefore replace the rescattering exchange by a unitarized amplitude using the BK equation which generates the saturation scale $Q_s(x)$. We also include a soft gap survival probability factor. We discuss the results and outline possible future strategies.

Unintegrated gluon distribution from modified BK equation

We investigate the recently proposed nonlinear equation for the unintegrated gluon distribution function which includes the subleading effects at small $x$. We obtained numerically the solution to this equation in $(x,k)$ space, and also the integrated gluon density. The subleading effects affect strongly the normalization and the $x$ and $k$ dependence of the gluon distribution. We show that the saturation scale $Q_s(x)$, which is obtained from this model, is consistent with the one used in the saturation model by Golec-Biernat and Wüsthoff. We also estimate the nonlinear effects by looking at the relative normalization of the solutions to the linear and nonlinear equations. It turns out that the differences are quite large even in the nominally dilute regime, that is when $Q^2 \gg Q_s^2$. Finally, we calculate the dipole-nucleon cross section.
