Fusion reactions in the $^9$Be + $^{197}$Au system above the Coulomb barrier

The cross sections of complete fusion and incomplete fusion for the $ ^{9} $Be + $ ^{197} $Au system, at energies not too much above the Coulomb barrier, were measured for the first time. The online activation followed by offline $γ$-ray spectroscopy method was used for the derivation of the cross sections. A slightly higher value of ICF/TF ratio has been observed, compared to other systems reported in the literature with $ ^{9} $Be beam. The experimental data were compared with coupled channel calculations without taking into account the coupling of the breakup channel, and experimental data of other reaction systems with weakly bound projectiles. A complete fusion suppression of about 40\% was found for the $ ^{9} $Be + $ ^{197} $Au system, at energies above the barrier, whereas the total fusion cross sections are in agreement with the calculations.

Spectroscopic Fingerprint of Chiral Majorana Modes at the Edge of a Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator / Superconductor Heterostructure

With the recent discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI), which exhibits the conductive quantum Hall edge states without external magnetic field, it becomes possible to create a novel topological superconductor (SC) by introducing superconductivity into these edge states. In this case, two distinct topological superconducting phases with one or two chiral Majorana edge modes were theoretically predicted, characterized by Chern numbers (N ) of 1 and 2, respectively. We present spectroscopic evidence from Andreev reflection experiments for the presence of chiral Majorana modes in a Nb / (Cr0.12Bi0.26Sb0.62)2Te3 heterostructure with distinct signatures attributed to two different topological superconducting phases. The results are in qualitatively good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Fine structure in the $α$ decay of $^{223}$U

Fine structure in the $α$ decay of $^{223}$U was observed in the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{187}$Re($^{40}$Ar, p3n) by using fast digital pulse processing technique. Two $α$-decay branches of $^{223}$U feeding the ground state and 244 keV excited state of $^{219}$Th were identified by establishing the decay chain $^{223}$U $\xrightarrow{α_{1}}$ $^{219}$Th $\xrightarrow{α_{2}}$ $^{215}$Ra $\xrightarrow{α_{3}}$ $^{211}$Rn. The $α$-particle energy for the ground-state to ground-state transition of $^{223}$U was determined to be 8993(17) keV, 213 keV higher than the previous value, the half-life was updated to be 62$^{+14}_{-10}$ $μ$s. Evolution of nuclear structure for $N$ = 131 even-$Z$ isotones from Po to U was discussed in the frameworks of nuclear mass and reduced $α$-decay width, a weakening octupole deformation in the ground state of $^{223}$U relative to its lighter isotones $^{219}$Ra and $^{221}$Th was suggested.

Zero-field Edge Magnetoplasmons in a Magnetic Topological Insulator

Incorporating ferromagnetic dopants, such as chromium or vanadium, into thin films of the three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) (Bi,Sb)2Te3 has recently led to the realisation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), a unique phase of quantum matter. These materials are of great interest, since they may support electrical currents that flow without resistance via edge channels, even at zero magnetic field. To date, the QAHE has been investigated using low-frequency transport measurements. However, transport requires contacting the sample and results can be difficult to interpret due to the presence of parallel conductive paths, via either the bulk or surface, or because additional non-chiral edge channels may exist. Here, we move beyond transport measurements by probing the microwave response of a magnetised disk of Cr-(Bi,Sb)2Te3. We identify features associated with chiral edge magnetoplasmons (EMPs), a signature that robust edge-channels are indeed intrinsic to this material system. Our results provide a measure of the velocity of edge excitations without contacting the sample, and pave the way for a new, on-chip circuit element of practical importance: the TI, zero-field microwave circulator.

Interface electronic structure at the topological insulator - ferrimagnetic insulator junction

An interface electron state at the junction between a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) film of Bi2Se3 and a ferrimagnetic insulator film of Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) was investigated by measurements of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The surface state of the Bi2Se3 film was directly observed and localized 3d spin states of the Fe3+ state in the YIG film were confirmed. The proximity effect is likely described in terms of the exchange interaction between the localized Fe 3d electrons in the YIG film and delocalized electrons of the surface and bulk states in the Bi2Se3 film. The Curie temperature (TC) may be increased by reducing the amount of the interface Fe2+ ions with opposite spin direction observable as a pre-edge in the XMCD spectra.

Parity symmetry and parity breaking in the quantum Rabi model with addition of Ising interaction

We explore the possibility to generate new parity symmetry in the quantum Rabi model after a bias is introduced. In contrast to a mathematical treatment in a previous publication [J. Phys. A 46, 265302 (2013)], we consider a physically realistic method by involving an additional spin into the quantum Rabi model to couple with the original spin by an Ising interaction. The rule can be found that the parity symmetry is broken by introducing a bias and then restored by adding new degrees of freedom. Experimental feasibility of realizing the models under discussion is investigated.

Parity breaking and scaling behavior in light-matter interaction

The light-matter interaction described by Rabi model and Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model is investigated by parity breaking as well as the scaling behavior of ground-state population-inversion expectation. We show that the parity breaking leads to different scaling behaviors in the two models, where the Rabi model demonstrates scaling invariance, but the JC model behaves in cusp-like way. Our study helps further understanding rotating-wave approximation and could present more subtle physics than any other characteristic parameter for the difference between the two models. More importantly, our results could be straightforwardly applied to the understanding of quantum phase transitions in spin-boson model. Furthermore, the scaling behavior is observable using currently available techniques in light-matter interaction.

Two Dimensional Crystal Tunneling Devices for THz Operation

Two dimensional (2D) crystal heterostructures are shown to possess a unique opportunity for novel THz nonlinear devices. In contrast to the oxide tunneling barrier, the uniformity of 2D insulators in the thickness control provides an ideal condition for tunneling barriers in the atomic scale. Numerical calculations based on a first principles method clearly indicate the feasibility of diode operation with barriers as thin as two monolayers of hexagonal boron nitride or molybdenum disulfide when placed between graphene-metal asymmetric electrodes. Further analysis predicts the cut-off frequencies of the proposed device over 10 THz while maintaining strong nonlinearity for zero-bias rectification. Application of the tunneling structure to hot electron transistors is also investigated, illustrating the THz operation with superior power performance. The proposed concept provides an excellent opportunity for realizing active nonlinear devices in the frequency range inaccessible thus far.

The vacuum induced Berry phase beyond rotating-wave approximation

With reference to the vacuum induced Berry phase (VIBP) obtained in the interaction of a spin-1/2 particle with quantized irradiation field under rotating-wave approximation (RWA), we present completely different treatment for the VIBP by a fully quantum mechanical treatment beyond the RWA, which gives a new definition of the VIBP and indicates the validity of RWA to be relevant not only to the energy conservation and comparison of characteristic parameters, but also to more subtle physics, such as the geometric property of the state evolution. Our result is of conceptual importance and also of significant relevance to quantum information processing.

The most generalized analytical approximation to the solution of single-mode spin-boson model without rotating-wave approximation

The single-mode spin-boson model (SMSBM) has extensive application in different subfields of physics. In the absence of rotating-wave approximation (RWA), we try to solve SMSBM analytically. We argue that the analytical expression obtained is the most exact approximation to the solution of the system under the assumption of Abel-Ruffini theorem, which works for a wide range of the parameters such as coupling strength and detuning and would be practical for currently available experiments.

Lower ground state due to counter-rotating wave interaction in trapped ion system

We consider a single ion confined in a trap under radiation of two traveling waves of lasers. In the strong-excitation regime and without the restriction of Lamb-Dicke limit, the Hamiltonian of the system is similar to a driving Jaynes-Cummings model without rotating wave approximation (RWA). The approach we developed enables us to present a complete eigensolutions, which makes it available to compare with the solutions under the RWA. We find that, the ground state in our non-RWA solution is energically lower than the counterpart under the RWA. If we have the ion in the ground state, it is equivalent to a spin dependent force on the trapped ion. Discussion is made for the difference between the solutions with and without the RWA, and for the relevant experimental test, as well as for the possible application in quantum information processing.

Exact solution of quantum dynamics of a cantilever coupling to a single trapped ultracold ion

The quantum behavior of a precooled cantilever can be probed highly efficiently by coupling to a trapped ultracold ion, in which a fast cooling of the cantilever down to the ground vibrational state is possible. We solve the dynamics of the coupling system by a squeezed-state expansion technique, and can in principle obtain the exact solution of the time-evolution of the coupling system. Compared to the treatment under rotating-wave approximation, we can present a more accurate description of the quantum behavior of the cantilever.
