A comment on full discretized isothermic tori in Euclidean spaces

Using discretized orthogonal systems (curvature line systems) with periodicity, created using Darboux transformations and their permutability, we have discrete and semi-discrete k-dimensional isothermic tori which are full in n-dimensional Euclidean space, for any natural numbers k between 2 nd n.

Darboux transforms and simple factor dressing of constant mean curvature surfaces

We define a transformation on harmonic maps from a Riemann surface into the 2-sphere which depends on a complex parameter, the so-called mu-Darboux transformation. In the case when the harmonic map N is the Gauss map of a constant mean curvature surface f and the parameter is real, the mu-Darboux transformation of -N is the Gauss map of a classical Darboux transform f. More generally, for all complex parameter the transformation on the harmonic Gauss map of f is induced by a (generalized) Darboux transformation on f. We show that this operation on harmonic maps coincides with simple factor dressing, and thus generalize results on classical Darboux transforms of constant mean curvature surfaces: every mu-Darboux transform is a simple factor dressing, and vice versa.

Harmonic map methods for Willmore surfaces

In this note we demonstrate how the analogy between the harmonic Gauss map of a constant mean curvature surface and the harmonic conformal Gauss map of a Willmore surface can be used to obtain results on Willmore surfaces.

Families of conformal tori of revolution in the 3-sphere

For all positive integers n we construct a 1-parameter family of conformal tori of revolution in the 3-sphere with n bulges. These tori arise by Darboux transformations of constant mean curvature tori but do not have constant mean curvature in the 3-sphere.

Darboux transforms and spectral curves of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian tori

The multiplier spectral curve of a conformal torus in the 4-sphere is essentially, see arXiv:0712.2311, given by all Darboux transforms of the conformal torus. In the particular case when the conformal immersion is a Hamiltonian stationary torus in Euclidean 4-space, the left normal of the immersion is harmonic, hence we can associate a second Riemann surface: the eigenline spectral curve of the left normal, as defined by Hitchin. We show that the multiplier spectral curve of a Hamiltonian stationary torus and the eigenline spectral curve of its left normal are biholomorphic Riemann surfaces of genus zero. Moreover, we prove that all Darboux transforms, which arise from generic points on the spectral curve, are Hamiltonian stationary whereas we also provide examples of Darboux transforms which are not even Lagrangian.

Conformal maps from a 2-torus to the 4-sphere

We study the space of conformal immersions of a 2-torus into the 4-sphere. The moduli space of generalized Darboux transforms of such an immersed torus has the structure of a Riemann surface, the spectral curve. This Riemann surface arises as the zero locus of the determinant of a holomorphic family of Dirac type operators parameterized over the complexified dual torus. The kernel line bundle of this family over the spectral curve describes the generalized Darboux transforms of the conformally immersed torus. If the spectral curve has finite genus the kernel bundle can be extended to the compactification of the spectral curve and we obtain a linear 2-torus worth of algebraic curves in projective 3-space. The original conformal immersion of the 2-torus is recovered as the orbit under this family of the point at infinity on the spectral curve projected to the 4-sphere via the twistor fibration.

Sequences of Willmore surfaces

In this paper we develop the theory of Willmore sequences for Willmore surfaces in the 4-sphere. We show that under appropriate conditions this sequence has to terminate. In this case the Willmore surface either is the twistor projection of a holomorphic curve into complex projective space or the inversion of a minimal surface with planar ends in 4-space. These results give a unified explanation of previous work on the characterization of Willmore spheres and Willmore tori with non-trivial normal bundles by various authors.

Envelopes and osculates of Willmore surfaces

We view conformal surfaces in the 4--sphere as quaternionic holomorphic curves in quaternionic projective space. By constructing enveloping and osculating curves, we obtain new holomorphic curves in quaternionic projective space and thus new conformal surfaces. Applying these constructions to Willmore surfaces, we show that the osculating and enveloping curves of Willmore spheres remain Willmore.

Willmore spheres in quaternionic projective space

The Willmore energy for Frenet curves in quaternionic projective space is the generalization of the Willmore functional for immersions into the 4-sphere. Critical points of the Willmore energy are called Willmore curves in quaternionic projective space. Using a Baecklund transformation on Willmore curves, we generalize Bryant's result on Willmore spheres in 3--space: a Willmore sphere in quaternionic projective space has integer Willmore energy, and is given by complex holomorphic data.

Quaternionic holomorphic geometry: Pluecker formula, Dirac eigenvalue estimates and energy estimates of harmonic 2-tori

The paper develops the fundamentals of quaternionic holomorphic curve theory. The holomorphic functions in this theory are conformal maps from a Riemann surface into the 4-sphere, i.e., the quaternionic projective line. Basic results such as the Riemann-Roch Theorem for quaternionic holomorphic vector bundles, the Kodaira embedding and the Pluecker relations for linear systems are proven. Interpretations of these results in terms of the differential geometry of surfaces in 3- and 4-space are hinted at throughout the paper. Applications to estimates of the Willmore functional on constant mean curvature tori, respectively energy estimates of harmonic 2-tori, and to Dirac eigenvalue estimates on Riemannian spin bundles in dimension 2 are given.

Conformal Geometry of Surfaces in the 4-Sphere and Quaternions

This is the first comprehensive introduction to the authors' recent attempts toward a better understanding of the global concepts behind spinor representations of surfaces in 3-space. The important new aspect is a quaternionic-valued function theory, whose "meromorphic functions" are conformal maps into quaternions, which extends the classical complex function theory on Riemann surfaces. The first results along these lines were presented at the ICM 98 in Berlin. An important new invariant of the quaternionic holomorphic theory is the Willmore energy. For quaternionic holomorphic curves in the quaternionic projective line, i.e., the conformal 4-sphere, this energy is the classical Willmore energy of conformal surfaces. Using these new techniques, the article discusses the mean curvature sphere of conformal surfaces in the 4-sphere, Willmore surfaces in the 4-sphere, Baecklund tranformations of Willmore surfaces, super-conformal surfaces and twistor projections, and a duality between Willmore surfaces in the 3-sphere and minimal surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space. Finally, a new proof of Montiel's recent classification of Willmore 2-spheres in the 4-sphere is given.
