Spectroscopy of 32Ne and the Island of Inversion

We report on the first spectroscopic study of the N=22 nucleus 32Ne at the newly completed RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. A single gamma-ray line with an energy of 722(9) keV was observed in both inelastic scattering of a 226 MeV/u 32Ne beam on a Carbon target and proton removal from 33Na at 245 MeV/u. This transition is assigned to the de-excitation of the first J^pi = 2+ state in 32Ne to the 0+ ground state. Interpreted through comparison with state-of-the-art shell model calculations, the low excitation energy demonstrates that the Island of Inversion extends to at least N=22 for the Ne isotopes.

The Van der Waals interactions and the photoelectric effect in noncommutative quantum mechanics

We calculate the long-range Vanderwaals force and the photoelectric cross section in a \nc set up. While we argue that non-commutativity effects could not be discerned for the Vanderwaals interactions, the result for the photoelectric effect shows deviation from the usual commutative one, which in principle can be used to put bounds on the space-space non-commutativity parameter.

A Study on the Sudden Death of Entanglement

The dynamics of entanglement and the phenomenon of entanglement sudden death (ESD) \cite{yu} are discussed in bipartite systems, measured by Wootters Concurrence. Our calculation shows that ESD appears whenever the system is open or closed and is dependent on the initial condition. The relation of the evolution of entanglement and energy transfer between the system and its surroundings is also studied.

Geometric Phase and Quantum Phase Transition in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model

The relation between the geometric phase and quantum phase transition has been discussed in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. Our calculation shows the ability of geometric phase of the ground state to mark quantum phase transition in this model. The possibility of the geometric phase or its derivatives as the universal order parameter of characterizing quantum phase transitions has been also discussed.

Nanoseconds field emitted current pulses from ZrC needles and field emitter arrays

The properties of the electron source define the ultimate limit of the beam quality in linear accelerators like Free Electron Lasers (FEL). The goal is to develop an electron gun delivering beam emittance lower than current state of the art. Such a gun should reduce the cost and size of an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL). In this paper we present two concepts of field emitter cathodes which could potentially produce low emittance beam. The first challenging parameter for such cathode is to emit peak current as high as 5 A. This is the minimum current requirement for the XFEL concept from Paul Scherrer Institut.1 Maximum current of 0.12 A and 0.58 A have been reached respectively with field emitter arrays (FEA) and single needle cathodes. Laser assisted field emission gave encouraging results to reach even higher peak current and to pre-bunch the beam.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in multi-level cascade scheme of cold rubidium atoms

We report an experimental investigation of electromagnetically induced transparency in a multi-level cascade system of cold atoms. The absorption spectral profiles of the probe light in the multi-level cascade system were observed in cold Rb-85 atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap, and the dependence of the spectral profile on the intensity of the coupling laser was investigated. The experimental measurements agree with the theoretical calculations based on the density matrix equations of the rubidium cascade system.

Tight binding studies of strained Ge/Si(001) growth

Experimental observations of the growth of more than one monolayer of Ge on Si(001) show a progression of effects beyond the (2xN) reconstruction which is seen at submonolayer coverages: a reduction in the value of N with coverage; formation of straight trenches of missing dimer vacancies; and formation of the (MxN) ``patch'' structure. We present tight binding calculations which investigate the energetics and geometries associated with these effects, and extend our earlier treatment of formation energies for reconstructions with different stoichiometries to the case of several layers of Ge. The results provide explanations for the various effects seen, and are in good agreement with experimental observations.

Photon sandwich detectors with WLS fiber readout

A photon detector for BNL experiment E949 is described. The detector consists of lead/scintillator ``sandwich'' of 25 layers of 5 mm thick scintillator BC404 and 24 layers of 2 mm lead absorber. Readout is implemented with 30-60 cm long WLS fibers (BCF99-29AA) glued into grooves in the BC404. Average yield was measured with cosmic rays to be about 43 p.e./MeV. Extruded plastic scintillation counters developed for sandwich detectors of photons for the KOPIO experiment are also described. For a 7 mm thick counter with 4.3 m long WLS fibers spaced at 7 mm a light yield of 18.7 p.e./MeV and time resolution of 0.71 ns were obtained. A prototype photon veto module consisting of 10 layers of 7 mm thick extruded plastic slabs interleaved with 1 mm lead sheets was tested.
