Visualization of two-dimensional transition dipole moment texture in momentum space using high-harmonic generation spectroscopy

Highly nonlinear optical phenomena can provide access to properties of electronic systems which are otherwise difficult to access through conventional linear optical spectroscopies. In particular, high harmonic generation (HHG) in crystalline solids is strikingly different from that in atomic gases, and it enables us to access electronic properties such as the band structure, Berry curvature, and valence electron density. Here, we show that polarization-resolved HHG measurements can be used to probe the transition dipole moment (TDM) texture in momentum space in two dimensional semiconductors. TDM is directly related to the internal structure of the electronic system and governs the optical properties. We study HHG in black phosphorus, which offers a simple two-band system, with bandgap resonant excitation. We observed a unique crystal-orientation dependence of the HHG yields and polarizations and succeeded in reconstructing the TDM texture related to the inter-atomic bonding structure. Our results demonstrate the potential of high harmonic spectroscopy for probing electronic wavefunctions in crystalline solids.

Examining the surface phase diagram of IrTe$_2$ with photoemission

In the transition metal dichalcogenide IrTe$_2$, low-temperature charge-ordered phase transitions involving Ir dimers lead to the occurrence of stripe phases of different periodicities, and nearly degenerate energies. Bulk-sensitive measurements have shown that, upon cooling, IrTe$_2$ undergoes two such first-order transitions to $(5\times1\times5)$ and $(8\times1\times8)$ reconstructed phases at $T_{c_1}\sim 280$~K and $T_{c_2}\sim 180$~K, respectively. Here, using surface sensitive probes of the electronic structure of IrTe$_2$, we reveal the first-order phase transition at $T_{c_3}=165$~K to the $(6\times1)$ stripes phase, previously proposed to be the surface ground state. This is achieved by combining x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, which give access to the evolution of stripe domains and a particular surface state, the energy of which is dependent on the Ir dimer length. By performing measurements over a full thermal cycle, we also report the complete hysteresis of all these phases.

Ultrafast dynamics and sub-wavelength periodic structure formation following irradiation of GaAs with femtosecond laser pulses

A theoretical investigation of the ultrafast processes and dynamics of the excited carriers upon irradiation of GaAs with femtosecond (fs) pulsed lasers is performed in conditions that induce material damage and eventually surface modification of the heated solid. A parametric study is followed to correlate the produced transient carrier density with the damage threshold for various pulse duration values τp (it increases as ~ at relatively small values of τp while it drops for pulse durations of the order of some picoseconds) based on the investigation of the fundamental multiscale physical processes following fs-laser irradiation. Moreover, fluence values for which the originally semiconducting material demonstrates a metallic behaviour are estimated. It is shown that a sufficient number of carriers in the conduction band are produced to excite Surface Plasmon (SP) waves that upon coupling with the incident beam and a fluid-based surface modification mechanism lead to the formation of sub-wavelength periodic structures orientated perpendicularly to the laser beam polarization. Experimental results for the damage threshold and the frequencies of induced periodic structures show a good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Relativistic Drude Response of Photoexcited Dirac Quasiparticles in Graphene

Graphene, a monolayer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal pattern, provides a unique two-dimensional (2D) system exhibiting exotic phenomena such as quantum Hall effects, massless Dirac quasiparticle excitations and universal absorption & conductivity. The linear energy-momentum dispersion relation in graphene also offers the opportunity to mimic the physics of far-away relativistic particles like neutron stars and white dwarfs. In this letter, we perform a counterintuitive ultrafast pump-probe experiment with high photon energies to isolate the Drude-like intraband dynamics of photoexcited carriers. We directly demonstrate the relativistic nature of the photoexcited Dirac quasiparticles by observing a nonlinear scaling of the response with the density of photoexcited carriers. This is in striking contrast to the linear scaling that is usually observed in conventional materials. Our results also indicate strong electron-phonon coupling in graphene, leading to a sub-100 femtosecond thermalization between high energy photoexcited carriers and optical phonons.

Observation of inter-Landau-level quantum coherence in semiconductor quantum wells

Using three-pulse four-wave-mixing femtosecond spectroscopy, we excite a non-radiative coherence between the discrete Landau levels of an undoped quantum well and study its dynamics. We observe quantum beats that reflect the time evolution of the coherence between the two lowest Landau level magnetoexcitons. We interpret our observations using a many-body theory and find that the inter Landau level coherence decays with a new time constant, substantially longer than the corresponding interband magnetoexciton dephasing times. Our results indicate a new intraband excitation dynamics that cannot be described in terms of uncorrelated interband excitations.

Ultrafast Enhancement of Ferromagnetism via Photoexcited Holes in GaMnAs

We report on the observation of ultrafast photo-enhanced ferromagnetism in GaMnAs. It is manifested as a transient magnetization increase on a 100-ps time scale, after an initial sub-ps demagnetization. The dynamic magnetization enhancement exhibits a maximum below the Curie temperature Tc and dominates the demagnetization component when approaching Tc. We attribute the observed ultrafast collective ordering to the p-d exchange interaction between photoexcited holes and Mn spins, leading to a correlation-induced peak around 20K and a transient increase in Tc.

Nonlinear Optical studies of the Transient Coherence in the Quantum Hall System

We review recent investigations of the femtosecond non-linear optical response of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a strong magnetic field. We probe the Quantum Hall (QH) regime for filling factors $ν\sim 1$. Our focus is on the transient coherence induced via optical excitation and on its time evolution during early femtosecond timescales. We simultaneously study the interband and intraband coherence in this system by using a nonlinear spectroscopic technique, transient three-pulse four wave mixing optical spectroscopy, and a many-body theory. We observe striking differences in the temporal and spectral profile of the nonlinear optical signal between a modulation doped quantum well system (with the 2DEG) and a similar undoped quantum well (without a 2DEG). We attribute these qualitative differences to Coulomb correlations between the photoexcited electron-hole pairs and the 2DEG. We show, in particular, that intraband many-particle coherences assisted by the inter-Landau-level magnetoplasmon excitations of the 2DEG dominate the femtosecond nonlinear optical responce. The most striking effect of these exciton-magnetoplasmon coherences is a large off-resonant four-wave-mixing signal in the case of very low photoexcited carrier densities, not observed in the undoped system, with strong temporal oscillations and unusually symmetric temporal profile.

Ultrafast dynamics of coherences in the quantum Hall system

Using three-pulse four-wave-mixing optical spectroscopy, we study the ultrafast dynamics of the quantum Hall system. We observe striking differences as compared to an undoped system, where the 2D electron gas is absent. In particular, we observe a large off-resonant signal with strong oscillations. Using a microscopic theory, we show that these are due to many-particle coherences created by interactions between photoexcited carriers and collective excitations of the 2D electron gas. We extract quantitative information about the dephasing and interference of these coherences.

Determinisitic Optical Fock State Generation

We present a scheme for the deterministic generation of N-photon Fock states from N three-level atoms in a high-finesse optical cavity. The method applies an external laser pulsethat generates an $N$-photon output state while adiabatically keeping the atom-cavity system within a subspace of optically dark states. We present analytical estimates of the error due to amplitude leakage from these dark states for general N, and compare it with explicit results of numerical simulations for N \leq 5. The method is shown to provide a robust source of N-photon states under a variety of experimental conditions and is suitable for experimental implementation using a cloud of cold atoms magnetically trapped in a cavity. The resulting N-photon states have potential applications in fundamental studies of non-classical states and in quantum information processing.
