A comparison of the local spiral structure from Gaia DR2 and VLBI maser parallaxes

Context. The Gaia mission has released the second data set (Gaia DR2), which contains parallaxes and proper motions for a large number of massive, young stars. Aims. We investigate the spiral structure in the solar neighborhood revealed by Gaia DR2 and compare it with that depicted by VLBI maser parallaxes. Methods. We examined three samples with different constraints on parallax uncertainty and distance errors and stellar spectral types: (1) all OB stars with parallax errors of less than 10%; (2) only O-type stars with 0.1 mas errors imposed and with parallax distance errors of less than 0.2 kpc; and (3) only O-type stars with 0.05 mas errors imposed and with parallax distance errors of less than 0.3 kpc. Results. In spite of the significant distance uncertainties for stars in DR2 beyond 1.4 kpc, the spiral structure in the solar neighborhood demonstrated by Gaia agrees well with that illustrated by VLBI maser results. The O-type stars available from DR2 extend the spiral arm models determined from VLBI maser parallaxes into the fourth Galactic quadrant, and suggest the existence of a new spur between the Local and Sagittarius arms.

A thorough view of the nuclear region of NGC 253 - Combined Herschel, SOFIA and APEX dataset

We present a large set of spectral lines detected in the $40"$ central region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. Observations were obtained with the three instruments SPIRE, PACS and HIFI on board the Herschel Space Observatory, upGREAT on board of the SOFIA airborne observatory, and the ground based APEX telescope. Combining the spectral and photometry products of SPIRE and PACS we model the dust continuum Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) and the most complete $^{12}$CO Line SED reported so far toward the nuclear region of NGC 253. Properties and excitation of the molecular gas were derived from a three-component non-LTE radiative transfer model, using the SPIRE $^{13}$CO lines and ground based observations of the lower-$J$ $^{13}$CO and HCN lines, to constrain the model parameters. Three dust temperatures were identified from the continuum emission, and three components are needed to fit the full CO LSED. Only the third CO component (fitting mostly the HCN and PACS $^{12}$CO lines) is consistent with a shock/mechanical heating scenario. A hot core chemistry is also argued as a plausible scenario to explain the high-$J$ $^{12}$CO lines detected with PACS. The effect of enhanced cosmic ray ionization rates, however, cannot be ruled out, and is expected to play a significant role in the diffuse and dense gas chemistry. This is supported by the detection of ionic species like OH$^+$ and H$_2$O$^+$, as well as the enhanced fluxes of the OH lines with respect to those of H$_2$O lines detected in both PACS and SPIRE spectrum.

86 GHz SiO maser survey of late-type stars in the Inner Galaxy. IV. SiO emission and infrared data for sources in the Scutum and Sagittarius-Carina arms, 20 deg < l < 50 deg

We present an 86 GHz SiO (v = 1, J = 2 ---> 1) maser search toward late-type stars located within |b|<0.5 deg and 20 deg < l < 50 deg. This search is an extension at longer longitudes of a previously published work. We selected 135 stars from the MSX catalog using color and flux criteria and detected 92 (86 new detections). The detection rate is 68%, the same as in our previous study. The last few decades have seen the publication of several catalogs of point sources detected in infrared surveys (MSX, 2MASS, DENIS, ISOGAL, WISE, GLIMPSE, AKARI, and MIPSGAL). We searched each catalog for data on the 444 targets of our earlier survey and for the 135 in the survey reported here. We confirm that, as anticipated, most of our targets have colors typical of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Only one target star may have already left the AGB. Ten stars have colors typical of carbon-rich stars, meaning a contamination of our sample with carbon stars <=1.7%.

Submillimeter-wave emission of three Galactic red novae: cool molecular outflows produced by stellar mergers

Red novae are optical transients erupting at luminosities typically higher than those of classical novae. Their outbursts are believed to be caused by stellar mergers. We present millimeter/submillimeter-wave observations with ALMA and SMA of the three best known Galactic red novae, V4332 Sgr, V1309 Sco, and V838 Mon. The observations were taken 22, 8, and 14 yr after their respective eruptions and reveal the presence of molecular gas at excitation temperatures of 35-200 K. The gas displays molecular emission in rotational transitions with very broad lines (full width $\sim$400 km\s). We found emission of CO, SiO, SO, SO$_2$ (in all three red novae), H$_2$S (covered only in V838 Mon) and AlO (present in V4332 Sgr and V1309 Sco). No anomalies were found in the isotopic composition of the molecular material and the chemical (molecular) compositions of the three red novae appear similar to those of oxygen-rich envelopes of classical evolved stars (RSGs, AGBs, post-AGBs). The minimum masses of the molecular material that most likely was dispersed in the red-nova eruptions are 0.1, 0.01, and 10$^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$ for V838 Mon, V4332 Sgr, and V1309 Sco, respectively. The molecular outflows in V4332 Sgr and V1309 Sco are spatially resolved and appear bipolar. The kinematic distances to V1309 Sco and V4332 Sgr are 2.1 and 4.2 kpc, respectively. The kinetic energy stored in the ejecta of the two older red-nova remnants of V838 Mon and V4332 Sgr is of order $10^{46}$ erg, similar to values found for some post-AGB (pre-PN) objects whose bipolar ejecta were also formed in a short-duration eruption. Our observations strengthen the link between these post-AGB objects and red novae and support the hypothesis that some of the post-AGB objects were formed in a common-envelope ejection event or its most catastrophic outcome, a merger.

The Evolving Radio Photospheres of Long-Period Variable Stars

Observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at 46 GHz (7 mm) have been used to measure the size and shape of the radio photospheres of four long-period variable stars: R Leonis (R Leo), IRC+10216 (CW Leo), chi Cygni (chi Cyg), and W Hydrae (W Hya). The shapes of the stars range from nearly round to ellipticities of ~0.15. Comparisons with observations taken several years earlier show that the photospheric parameters (mean diameter, shape, and/or flux density) of each of the stars have changed over time. Evidence for brightness asymmetries and non-uniformities across the radio surfaces are also seen in the visibility domain and in images obtained using a sparse modeling image reconstruction technique. These trends may be explained as manifestations of large-scale irregular convective flows on the stellar surface, although effects from non-radial pulsations cannot be excluded. Our data also allow a new evaluation of the proper motion of IRC+10216. Our measurement is in agreement with previous values obtained from radio wavelength measurements, and we find no evidence of statistically significant astrometric perturbations from a binary companion.

Fragmentation and disk formation during high-mass star formation: The IRAM NOEMA (Northern Extended Millimeter Array) large program CORE

Aims: We aim to understand the fragmentation as well as the disk formation, outflow generation and chemical processes during high-mass star formation on spatial scales of individual cores. Methods: Using the IRAM Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) in combination with the 30m telescope, we have observed in the IRAM large program CORE the 1.37mm continuum and spectral line emission at high angular resolution (~0.4'') for a sample of 20 well-known high-mass star-forming regions with distances below 5.5kpc and luminosities larger than 10^4Lsun. Results: We present the overall survey scope, the selected sample, the observational setup and the main goals of CORE. Scientifically, we concentrate on the mm continuum emission on scales on the order of 1000AU. We detect strong mm continuum emission from all regions, mostly due to the emission from cold dust. The fragmentation properties of the sample are diverse. We see extremes where some regions are dominated by a single high-mass core whereas others fragment into as many as 20 cores. A minimum-spanning-tree analysis finds fragmentation at scales on the order of the thermal Jeans length or smaller suggesting that turbulent fragmentation is less important than thermal gravitational fragmentation. The diversity of highly fragmented versus singular regions can be explained by varying initial density structures and/or different initial magnetic field strengths. Conclusions: The smallest observed separations between cores are found around the angular resolution limit which indicates that further fragmentation likely takes place on even smaller spatial scales. The CORE project with its numerous spectral line detections will address a diverse set of important physical and chemical questions in the field of high-mass star formation.

New detections of (sub)millimeter hydrogen radio recombination lines towards high-mass star-forming clumps

Previous radio recombination line (RRL) observations of dust clumps identified in the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) have led to the detection of a large number of RRLs in the 3mm range. Here, we aim to study their excitation with shorter wavelength (sub)millimeter radio recombination line (submm-RRL) observations. We made observations of submm-RRLs with low principal quantum numbers ($n$ $\leq$ 30) using the APEX 12 m telescope, toward 104 HII regions associated with massive dust clumps from ATLASGAL. The observations covered the H25$α$, H28$α$, and H35$β$ transitions. Toward a small subsample the H26$α$, H27$α$, H29$α$, and H30$α$ lines were observed to avoid contamination by molecular lines at adjacent frequencies. We have detected submm-RRLs (signal-to-noise $\geq$ 3 $σ$) from compact HII regions embedded within 93 clumps. The submm-RRLs are approximately a factor of two brighter than the mm-RRLs and consistent with optically thin emission in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). The average ratio (0.31) of the measured H35$β$/H28$α$ fluxes is close to the LTE value of 0.28. No indication of RRL maser emission has been found. The Lyman photon flux, bolometric, and submm-RRL luminosities toward the submm-RRL detected sources present significant correlations. The trends of dust temperature and the ratio of bolometric luminosity to clump mass, $L_{\rm bol}/M_{\rm clump}$, indicate that the HII regions are related to the most massive and luminous clumps. By estimating the production rate of ionizing photons, $Q$, from the submm-RRL flux, we find that the $Q$(H28$α$) measurements provide estimates of the Lyman continuum photon flux consistent with those determined from 5 GHz radio continuum emission.

The search for high-mass protostars with ALMA revealed up to kilo-parsec scales (SPARKS): I. Indication for a centrifugal barrier in the environment of a single high-mass envelope

The formation of the most massive O-type stars is poorly understood. We present a case study of a young massive clump from the ATLASGAL survey, G328.2551-0.5321. It exhibits a bolometric luminosity of 1.3$\times$10$^4$ L$_{\odot}$ corresponding to a current protostellar mass of $\sim$11 and 16 M$_{\odot}$. We analyze high angular-resolution observations with ALMA at $\sim$0.17" corresponding a physical scale of $\sim$400 au in dust continuum and molecular lines. The dust continuum emission reveals a single high-mass protostellar envelope and shows evidence for a marginally resolved continuum source. We detect a rotational line of CH$_3$OH within its $v_{\rm t}$=1 torsionally excited state revealing two bright peaks of emission spatially offset from the dust continuum peak, and exhibiting a distinct velocity component $\pm$4.5 km s$^{-1}$ offset compared to the source $v_{\rm lsr}$. Local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis suggests N(CH$_3$OH)=1.2$-$2$\times$10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$, and kinetic temperatures of 160$-$200 K at the position of these peaks. Their velocity shifts correspond well to the expected Keplerian velocity around a central object with 15M$_{\odot}$ consistent with the mass estimate based on the source's bolometric luminosity. We propose a picture where the CH$_3$OH emission peaks trace the accretion shocks around the centrifugal barrier, pinpointing the interaction region between the collapsing envelope and an accretion disk. Because the HC$_3$N $v_{\rm 7}$=1e ($J$=38-37) line shows compact emission, and a velocity pattern consistent with models of Keplerian rotation, we suggest that this could be a new tracer for compact accretion disks around high-mass protostars. The estimated physical properties of the accretion disk suggest a specific angular momentum several times larger than typically observed towards low-mass protostars.

Weak-lensing mass calibration of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect using APEX-SZ galaxy clusters

The use of galaxy clusters as precision cosmological probes relies on an accurate determination of their masses. However, inferring the relationship between cluster mass and observables from direct observations is difficult and prone to sample selection biases. In this work, we use weak lensing as the best possible proxy for cluster mass to calibrate the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect measurements from the APEX-SZ experiment. For a well-defined (ROSAT) X-ray complete cluster sample, we calibrate the integrated Comptonization parameter, $Y_{\rm SZ}$, to the weak-lensing derived total cluster mass, $M_{500}$. We employ a novel Bayesian approach to account for the selection effects by jointly fitting both the SZ Comptonization, $Y_{\rm SZ}\text{--}M_{500}$, and the X-ray luminosity, $L_{\rm x}\text{--}M_{500}$, scaling relations. We also account for a possible correlation between the intrinsic (log-normal) scatter of $L_{\rm x}$ and $Y_{\rm SZ}$ at fixed mass. We find the corresponding correlation coefficient to be $r= 0.47_{-0.35}^{+0.24}$, and at the current precision level our constraints on the scaling relations are consistent with previous works. For our APEX-SZ sample, we find that ignoring the covariance between the SZ and X-ray observables biases the normalization of the $Y_{\rm SZ}\text{--}M_{500}$ scaling high by $1\text{--}2σ$ and the slope low by $\sim 1σ$, even when the SZ effect plays no role in the sample selection. We conclude that for higher-precision data and larger cluster samples, as anticipated from on-going and near-future cluster cosmology experiments, similar biases (due to intrinsic covariances of cluster observables) in the scaling relations will dominate the cosmological error budget if not accounted for correctly.

Unveiling the remarkable photodissociation region of M8

Messier 8 is one of the brightest HII regions in the sky. Using SOFIA, APEX 12 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes, we have performed a comprehensive imaging survey of the emission from the [CII], [CI] and CO isotopologues within 1.3 $\times$ 1.3 pc around the dominant Herschel 36 (Her 36) stellar system. To further explore the morphology of the region we compare archival infrared, optical and radio images of the nebula with our newly obtained [CII] and CO data. We perform a quantitative analysis, using both LTE and non-LTE methods to determine the abundances of some of the observed species as well as kinetic temperatures and volume densities. Bright CO, [CII] and [CI] emission has been found towards the HII region and the photodissociation region (PDR) in M8. Our analysis places the bulk of the molecular material in the background of the nebulosity illuminated by the bright stellar systems Her 36 and 9 Sagitarii. Since the emission from all observed atomic and molecular tracers peaks at or close to the position of Her 36, we conclude that the star is still physically close to its natal dense cloud core and heats it. A veil of warm gas moves away from Her 36 toward the Sun and its associated dust contributes to the foreground extinction in the region. One of the most prominent star forming regions in M8, the Hourglass Nebula, is particularly bright due to cracks in this veil close to Her 36. By using radiative transfer modeling of different transitions of CO isotopologues, we obtain H$_{2}$ densities ranging from $\sim 10^{4} - 10^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$ and kinetic temperatures of 100 $-$ 150 K in the bright PDR caused by Her 36.

Widespread HCN maser emission in carbon-rich evolved stars

Context. HCN is a major constituent of the circumstellar envelopes of carbon-rich evolved stars, and rotational lines from within its vibrationally excited states probe parts of these regions closest to the stellar surface. A number of such lines are known to show maser action. Historically, in one of them, the 177 GHz $J=2\rightarrow1$ line in the $l$-doubled bending mode has been found to show relatively strong maser action, with results only published for a single object, the archetypical high-mass loss asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star IRC+10216. Aims. To examine how common 177 GHz HCN maser emission is, we conducted an exploratory survey for this line toward a select sample of carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch stars that are observable from the southern hemisphere. Methods. We used the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment 12 meter submillimeter Telescope (APEX) equipped with a new receiver to simultaneously observe three $J=2\rightarrow1$ HCN rotational transitions, the $(0,1^{{1}_{\rm c}},0)$ and $(0,1^{{1}_{\rm d}},0)$ $l$-doublet components, and the line from the (0,0,0) ground state. Results. The $(0,1^{{1}_{\rm c}},0)$ maser line is detected toward 11 of 13 observed sources, which all show emission in the (0,0,0) transition. In most of the sources, the peak intensity of the $(0,1^{{1}_{\rm c}},0)$ line rivals that of the (0,0,0) line; in two sources, it is even stronger. Except for the object with the highest mass-loss rate, IRC+10216, the $(0,1^{{1}_{\rm c}},0)$ line covers a smaller velocity range than the (0,0,0) line. Conclusions. Maser emission in the 177 GHz $J=2\rightarrow1$ $(0,1^{{1}_{\rm c}},0)$ line of HCN appears to be common in carbon-rich AGB stars. (Abbreviated)

A revised distance to IRAS 16293$-$2422 from VLBA astrometry of associated water masers

IRAS 16293-2422 is a very well studied young stellar system seen in projection towards the L1689N cloud in the Ophiuchus complex. However, its distance is still uncertain with a range of values from 120 pc to 180 pc. Our goal is to measure the trigonometric parallax of this young star by means of H$_2$O maser emission. We use archival data from 15 epochs of VLBA observations of the 22.2 GHz water maser line. By modeling the displacement on the sky of the H$_2$O maser spots, we derived a trigonometric parallax of $7.1\pm1.3$ mas, corresponding to a distance of $141_{-21}^{+30}$ pc. This new distance is in good agreement with recent values obtained for other magnetically active young stars in the L1689 cloud. We relate the kinematics of these masers with the outflows and the recent ejections powered by source A in the system.

ATLASGAL-selected massive clumps in the inner Galaxy: VI. Kinetic temperature and spatial density measured with formaldehyde

We aim to directly determine the kinetic temperature and spatial density with formaldehyde for the $\sim$100 brightest ATLASGAL-selected clumps at 870 $μ$m representing various evolutionary stages of high-mass star formation. Ten transitions ($J$ = 3-2 and 4-3) of ortho- and para-H$_2$CO near 211, 218, 225, and 291 GHz were observed with the APEX 12 m telescope. Using non-LTE models with RADEX, we derive the gas kinetic temperature and spatial density using the measured p-H$_2$CO 3$_{21}$-2$_{20}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$, 4$_{22}$-3$_{21}$/4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$, and 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$ ratios. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from the p-H$_2$CO 3$_{21}$-2$_{20}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$ and 4$_{22}$-3$_{21}$/4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$ line ratios are high, ranging from 43 to $>$300 K with an unweighted average of 91 $\pm$ 4 K. Deduced $T_{\rm kin}$ values from the $J$ = 3-2 and 4-3 transitions are similar. Spatial densities of the gas derived from the p-H$_2$CO 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$ line ratios yield 0.6-8.3 $\times$ 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$ with an unweighted average of 1.5 ($\pm$0.1) $\times$ 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$. A comparison of kinetic temperatures derived from p-H$_2$CO, NH$_3$, and the dust emission indicates that p-H$_2$CO traces a distinctly higher temperature than the NH$_3$ (2,2)/(1,1) transitions and the dust, tracing heated gas more directly associated with the star formation process. The H$_2$CO linewidths are found to be correlated with bolometric luminosity and increase with the evolutionary stage of the clumps, which suggests that higher luminosities tend to be associated with a more turbulent molecular medium. It seems that the spatial densities measured with H$_2$CO do not vary significantly with the evolutionary stage of the clumps. However, averaged gas kinetic temperatures derived from H$_2$CO increase with time through the evolution of the clumps.

The foot points of the Giant Molecular Loops in the Galactic center region

Aims: To reveal the morphology, chemical composition, kinematics and to establish the main processes prevalent in the gas at the foot points of the giant molecular loops (GMLs) in the Galactic center region Methods: Using the 22-m Mopra telescope, we mapped the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud, placed at the foot points of a giant molecular loop, in 3-mm range molecular lines. To derive the molecular hydrogen column density, we also observed the $^{13}$CO $(2-1)$ line at 1 mm using the 12-m APEX telescope. From the 3 mm observations 12 molecular species were detected, namely HCO$^+$, HCN, H$^{13}$CN, HNC, SiO, CS, CH$_3$OH, N$_2$H$^+$, SO, HNCO, OCS, and HC$_3$N. Results: Maps revealing the morphology and kinematics of the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud in different molecules are presented. We identified six main molecular complexes. We derive fractional abundances in 11 selected positions of the different molecules assuming local thermodynamical equilibrium. Conclusions: Most of the fractional abundances derived for the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud are very similar over the whole cloud. However, the fractional abundances of some molecules show significant difference with respect to those measured in the central molecular zone (CMZ). The abundances of the shock tracer SiO are very similar between the GMLs and the CMZ. The methanol emission is the most abundant specie in the GMLs. This indicates that the gas is likely affected by moderate $\sim $ 30 km s$^{-1}$ or even high velocity (50 km s$^{-1}$) shocks, consistent with the line profile observed toward one of the studied position. The origin of the shocks is likely related to the flow of the gas throughout the GMLs towards the foot points.

Deep submillimeter and radio observations in the SSA22 field. I. Powering sources and Lyα escape fraction of Lyα blobs

We study the heating mechanisms and Lyα escape fractions of 35 Lyα blobs (LABs) at z = 3.1 in the SSA22 field. Dust continuum sources have been identified in 11 of the 35 LABs, all with star formation rates (SFRs) above 100 Msun/yr. Likely radio counterparts are detected in 9 out of 29 investigated LABs. The detection of submm dust emission is more linked to the physical size of the Lyα emission than to the Lyα luminosities of the LABs. A radio excess in the submm/radio detected LABs is common, hinting at the presence of active galactic nuclei. Most radio sources without X-ray counterparts are located at the centers of the LABs. However, all X-ray counterparts avoid the central regions. This may be explained by absorption due to exceptionally large column densities along the line-of-sight or by LAB morphologies, which are highly orientation dependent. The median Lyα escape fraction is about 3\% among the submm-detected LABs, which is lower than a lower limit of 11\% for the submm-undetected LABs. We suspect that the large difference is due to the high dust attenuation supported by the large SFRs, the dense large-scale environment as well as large uncertainties in the extinction corrections required to apply when interpreting optical data.

Galactocentric variation of the gas-to-dust ratio and its relation with metallicity

(Abridged) Context: The assumption of a gas-to-dust mass ratio (γ) is a common approach to estimate the basic properties of molecular clouds, such as total mass and column density of molecular hydrogen, from (sub)mm continuum observations of the dust. In the Milky Way a single value is used at all galactocentric radii, independently of the observed metallicity gradients. Both models and extragalactic observations suggest that this quantity increases for decreasing metallicity Z, typical of the outer regions in disks, where fewer heavy elements are available to form dust grains. Aims: We aim to investigate the variation of the gas-to-dust ratio as a function of galactocentric radius and metallicity, to allow a more accurate characterisation of the quantity of molecular gas across the galactic disk, as derived from observations of the dust. Methods: Observations of the optically thin C\$^{18}\$O (2-1) transition were obtained with the APEX telescope for a sample of 23 massive and dense star-forming regions in the far outer Galaxy (galactocentric distance greater than 14 kpc). From the modelling of this line and of the spectral energy distribution of the selected clumps we computed the gas-to-dust ratio and compared it to that of well-studied sources from the ATLASGAL TOP100 sample in the inner galactic disk. Results: The gradient in gas-to-dust ratio is found to be 0.087 dex/kpc (or equivalently γ proportional to Z\$^{-1.4}\$). The dust-to-metal ratio, decreases with galactocentric radius, which is the most common situation also for external late-type galaxies. This suggests that grain growth dominates over destruction. The predicted gas-to-dust ratio is in excellent agreement with the estimates in Magellanic clouds, for the appropriate value of Z.

Circumstellar ammonia in oxygen-rich evolved stars

The circumstellar ammonia (NH$_3$) chemistry in evolved stars is poorly understood. Previous observations and modelling showed that NH$_3$ abundance in oxygen-rich stars is several orders of magnitude above that predicted by equilibrium chemistry. In this article, we characterise the spatial distribution and excitation of NH$_3$ in the O-rich circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of four diverse targets: IK Tau, VY CMa, OH 231.8+4.2, and IRC +10420 with multi-wavelength observations. We observed the 1.3-cm inversion line emission with the Very Large Array (VLA) and submillimetre rotational line emission with the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) aboard Herschel from all four targets. For IK Tau and VY CMa, we observed the rovibrational absorption lines in the $ν_2$ band near 10.5 $μ$m with the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). We also attempted to search for the rotational transition within the $v_2=1$ state near 2 mm with the IRAM 30m Telescope towards IK Tau. Non-LTE radiative transfer modelling, including radiative pumping to the vibrational state, was carried out to derive the radial distribution of NH$_3$ in these CSEs. Our modelling shows that the NH$_3$ abundance relative to molecular hydrogen is generally of the order of $10^{-7}$, which is a few times lower than previous estimates that were made without considering radiative pumping and is at least 10 times higher than that in the C-rich CSE of IRC +10216. Incidentally, we also derived a new period of IK Tau from its $V$-band light curve. NH$_3$ is again detected in very high abundance in O-rich CSEs. Its emission mainly arises from localised spatial-kinematic structures that are probably denser than the ambient gas. Circumstellar shocks in the accelerated wind may contribute to the production of NH$_3$. (Abridged abstract)

Kinetic temperature of massive star-forming molecular clumps measured with formaldehyde. III. The Orion Molecular Cloud 1

We mapped the kinetic temperature structure of the Orion molecular cloud 1 with para-H2CO(303-202, 322-221, and 321-220) using the APEX 12m telescope. This is compared with the temperatures derived from the ratio of the NH3(2,2)/(1,1) inversion lines and the dust emission. Using the RADEX non-LTE model, we derive the gas kinetic temperature modeling the measured averaged line ratios of para-H2CO 322-221/303-202 and 321-220/303-202. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from the para-H2CO line ratios are warm, ranging from 30 to >200 K with an average of 62 K at a spatial density of 10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$. These temperatures are higher than those obtained from NH3(2,2)/(1,1) and CH3CCH(6-5) in the OMC-1 region. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from para-H2CO agree with those obtained from warm dust components measured in the mid infrared (MIR), which indicates that the para-H2CO(3-2) ratios trace dense and warm gas. The cold dust components measured in the far infrared (FIR) are consistent with those measured with NH3(2,2)/(1,1) and the CH3CCH(6-5) line series. With dust at MIR wavelengths and para-H2CO(3-2) on one side and dust at FIR wavelengths, NH3(2,2)/(1,1), and CH3CCH(6-5) on the other, dust and gas temperatures appear to be equivalent in the dense gas of the OMC-1 region, but provide a bimodal distribution, one more directly related to star formation than the other. The non-thermal velocity dispersions of para-H2CO are positively correlated with the gas kinetic temperatures in regions of strong non-thermal motion (Mach number >2.5) of the OMC-1, implying that the higher temperature traced by para-H2CO is related to turbulence on a 0.06 pc scale. Combining the temperature measurements with para-H2CO and NH3(2,2)/(1,1) line ratios, we find direct evidence for the dense gas along the northern part of the OMC-1 10 km s$^{-1}$ filament heated by radiation from the central Orion nebula.
