Studying High Redshift Star Forming Galaxies at Centimeter and Millimeter Wavelengths

We discuss various aspects of centimeter and millimeter wavelength continuum and line observations of high redshift star forming galaxies. Perhaps the most important lesson is that sensitive observations at submm through cm wavelengths reveal a population of active star forming galaxies at high redshift which are unseen in deep optical surveys due to dust obscuration. Current models suggest that this population represents the formation of the spheroidal components of galaxies at z between 2 and 5, constituting about half of the total amount of cosmic star formation from the big bang to the present. High resolution imaging at cm wavelengths provides sub-arcsecond astrometry, and can be used to search for gravitational lensing and/or for the presence of an AGN. Radio continuum observations provide unique information on the magnetic fields in early galaxies, and give a gross indication of the star formation rate, while the radio-to-submm spectral index provides a rough indication of source redshift. Low J transitions of CO are redshifted into the cm bands for z > 2, allowing for sensitive searches for CO emission over large volumes at high redshift. We present recent results from the Very Large Array (VLA), and from the new 230 GHz MPIfR bolometer array at the IRAM 30m telescope. A wide field survey with the bolometer array indicates a cut-off in the source distribution function at FIR luminosities > 3e12 L_sun. Lastly, we summarize the scientific promise of the New VLA.

Proposed identification of Hubble Deep Field submillimeter source HDF 850.1

The IRAM interferometer has been used to detect the submm source HDF 850.1 found by Hughes et al. (1998) in the Hubble Deep Field. The flux density measured at 1.3mm is 2.2 mJy, in agreement with the flux density measured at the JCMT. The flux densities and upper limits measured at 3.4, 2.8, 1.3, 0.85, and 0.45 mm show that the emission is from dust. We suggest that the 1.3mm dust source is associated with the optical arc-like feature, 3-593.0, that has a photometric redshift of about 1.7. If HDF 850.1 is at this redshift and unlensed, its spectral energy distribution, combined with that of 3-593.0, matches closely that of the ultraluminous galaxy VII Zw 31. Another possibility is that the dust source may be gravitationally lensed by the elliptical galaxy 3-586.0 at a redshift of 1.

Imaging the z=0.9 Absorbing Cloud toward 1830-211

We present spectroscopic imaging observations of the molecular and HI 21cm absorbing cloud at z = 0.885 toward the `Einstein ring' radio source PKS 1830-211. We derive a cloud size between 10 h^{-1} pc and 600 h^{-1} pc, and M(H_2) > 2.6x10^{4} h^{-2} Msolar. The temperature of the ambient radiation field is 4.5+/-0.9 K, consistent with the microwave background temperature at z = 0.885. The velocity difference for absorption on opposite sides of the ring is -146 km s^{-1}, which is consistent with the galaxian rotation velocity derived from gravitational lens models.

Redshifted Neutral Hydrogen 21cm Absorption toward Red Quasars

We have searched for redshifted neutral hydrogen 21cm absorption toward sources from the Stickel et al. `red quasar' sub-sample. Five of these red quasars have been searched for redshifted HI 21cm absorption to optical depth levels of a few percent, and four show strong absorption. This 80% success rate for the red quasars compares to the much lower success rate of only 11% for detecting HI 21cm absorption associated with optically selected Mg II absorption line systems. The large neutral hydrogen column densities seen toward the red quasars provide circumstantial evidence supporting the dust reddening hypothesis, as opposed to an intrinsically red spectrum for the AGN emission mechanism. The data on the red quasar sub-sample support the models of Fall and Pei for dust obscuration by damped Ly alpha absorption line systems and suggest that: (i) there may be a significant, but not dominant, population of quasars missing from optically selected samples due to dust obscuration, perhaps as high as 20% at the POSS limit for an optical sample with a redshift distribution similar to the 1 Jy, flat spectrum quasar sample, and (ii) optically selected samples may miss about half the high column density quasar absorption line systems. The redshifted HI 21cm absorption line detections are toward the sources: 0108+388 at z = 0.6685, 0500+019 at z = 0.5846, and 1504+377 at z = 0.6733. No absorption is seen toward 2149+056 at z = 0.740 at a level below that seen for the three detections. In some systems the absorbing gas is in the vicinity of the AGN, either circumnuclear material or material in the general ISM of the AGN's host galaxy, and in other systems the absorption is by gas associated with galaxies cosmologically distributed along the line of sight to the quasar.

Redshifted molecular absorption systems towards PKS1830-211 and B0218+357: submillimeter CO, CI and H2O data

We have detected the J=4-3 rotational transition of 12CO in absorption at z=0.89 towards the quasar PKS1830-211, but not the 12CO 5-4 or the 3P1-3P0 fine structure line of neutral carbon. The intervening molecular medium thus has a total 12CO column density of N(CO)~2x10^18 cm^-2, which corresponds to the large column density of molecular hydrogen of N(H2)=2.5x10^22 cm^-2 and a reddening of Av=25 magnitudes. The 12CO excitation temperature is low, below 15 K. Comparison with the molecular absorption results of Wiklind and Combes (1996) shows that the absorbing material has similar molecular abundances to Galactic dark clouds. We find an upper limit for atomic carbon of N(CI)<10^18 cm^-2, which again would be the case for most Galactic dark clouds. We also report new observations of the absorbing system towards B0218+357 at z=0.68. We have tentatively detected the 13CO 4-3 line, but for H2O, although a feature is seen at the correct velocity, due to the inadequate signal to noise ratio we report only an upper limit for the fundamental line of ortho water vapor. The tentative detection of the 13CO J=4-3 line implies that the 13CO excitation temperature is lower than 20K and the column density is fairly large, N(13CO)~10^17 cm^-2, giving rise to saturated absorption in the J=2-1 transition. The total column density of molecular gas is again large in this source, N(H2)>2x10^22 cm^-2, corresponding to a reddening >20 magnitudes.
