Matrix product solution of the multispecies partially asymmetric exclusion process

We find the exact solution for the stationary state measure of the partially asymmetric exclusion process on a ring with multiple species of particles. The solution is in the form of a matrix product representation where the matrices for a system of N species are defined recursively in terms of the matrices for a system of N-1 species. A complete proof is given, based on the quadratic relations verified by these matrices. This matrix product construction is interpreted in terms of the action of a transfer matrix.

Fluctuation theorem and large deviation function for a solvable model of a molecular motor

We study a discrete stochastic model of a molecular motor. This discrete model can be viewed as a \emph{minimal} ratchet model. We extend our previous work on this model, by further investigating the constraints imposed by the Fluctuation Theorem on the operation of a molecular motor far from equilibrium. In this work, we show the connections between different formulations of the Fluctuation Theorem. One formulation concerns the generating function of the currents while another one concerns the corresponding large deviation function, which we have calculated exactly for this model. A third formulation of FT concerns the ratio of the probability of making one forward step to the probability of making one backward step. The predictions of this last formulation of the Fluctuation Theorem adapted to our model are in very good agreement with the data of Carter and Cross [Nature, {\bf 435}, 308 (2005)] on single molecule measurements with kinesin. Finally, we show that all the formulations of FT can be understood from the notion of entropy production.

Non-equilibrium fluctuations and mechanochemical couplings of a molecular motor

We investigate theoretically the violations of Einstein and Onsager relations, and the efficiency for a single processive motor operating far from equilibrium using an extension of the two-state model introduced by Kafri {\em et al.} [Biophys. J. {\bf 86}, 3373 (2004)]. With the aid of the Fluctuation Theorem, we analyze the general features of these violations and this efficiency and link them to mechanochemical couplings of motors. In particular, an analysis of the experimental data of kinesin using our framework leads to interesting predictions that may serve as a guide for future experiments.

Family of Commuting Operators for the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process

The algebraic structure underlying the totally asymmetric exclusion process is studied by using the Bethe Ansatz technique. From the properties of the algebra generated by the local jump operators, we explicitly construct the hierarchy of operators (called generalized hamiltonians) that commute with the Markov operator. The transfer matrix, which is the generating function of these operators, is shown to represent a discrete Markov process with long-range jumps. We give a general combinatorial formula for the connected hamiltonians obtained by taking the logarithm of the transfer matrix. This formula is proved using a symbolic calculation program for the first ten connected operators. Keywords: ASEP, Algebraic Bethe Ansatz. Pacs numbers: 02.30.Ik, 02.50.-r, 75.10.Pq.

Connected Operators for the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process

We fully elucidate the structure of the hierarchy of the connected operators that commute with the Markov matrix of the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process (TASEP). We prove for the connected operators a combinatorial formula that was conjectured in a previous work. Our derivation is purely algebraic and relies on the algebra generated by the local jump operators involved in the TASEP. The asymmetric simple exclusion process: an integrable model for non-equilibrium statistical mechanics

The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) plays the role of a paradigm in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. We review exact results for the ASEP obtained by Bethe ansatz and put emphasis on the algebraic properties of this model. The Bethe equations for the eigenvalues of the Markov matrix of the ASEP are derived from the algebraic Bethe ansatz. Using these equations we explain how to calculate the spectral gap of the model and how global spectral properties such as the existence of multiplets can be predicted. An extension of the Bethe ansatz leads to an analytic expression for the large deviation function of the current in the ASEP that satisfies the Gallavotti-Cohen relation. Finally, we describe some variants of the ASEP that are also solvable by Bethe ansatz. Keywords: ASEP, integrable models, Bethe ansatz, large deviations.

Derivation of a Matrix Product Representation for the Asymmetric Exclusion Process from Algebraic Bethe Ansatz

We derive, using the algebraic Bethe Ansatz, a generalized Matrix Product Ansatz for the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) on a one-dimensional periodic lattice. In this Matrix Product Ansatz, the components of the eigenvectors of the ASEP Markov matrix can be expressed as traces of products of non-commuting operators. We derive the relations between the operators involved and show that they generate a quadratic algebra. Our construction provides explicit finite dimensional representations for the generators of this algebra.

Spectral Degeneracies in the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process

We study the spectrum of the Markov matrix of the totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) on a one-dimensional periodic lattice at ARBITRARY filling. Although the system does not possess obvious symmetries except translation invariance, the spectrum presents many multiplets with degeneracies of high order. This behaviour is explained by a hidden symmetry property of the Bethe Ansatz. Combinatorial formulae for the orders of degeneracy and the corresponding number of multiplets are derived and compared with numerical results obtained from exact diagonalisation of small size systems. This unexpected structure of the TASEP spectrum suggests the existence of an underlying large invariance group. Keywords: ASEP, Markov matrix, Bethe Ansatz, Symmetries.

Hidden symmetries in the asymmetric exclusion process

We present a spectral study of the evolution matrix of the totally asymmetric exclusion process on a ring at half filling. The natural symmetries (translation, charge conjugation combined with reflection) predict only two fold degeneracies. However, we have found that degeneracies of higher order also exist and, as the system size increases, higher and higher orders appear. These degeneracies become generic in the limit of very large systems. This behaviour can be explained by the Bethe Ansatz and suggests the presence of hidden symmetries in the model. Spectral gap of the totally asymmetric exclusion process at arbitrary filling

We calculate the spectral gap of the Markov matrix of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on a ring of L sites with N particles. Our derivation is simple and self-contained and extends a previous calculation that was valid only for half-filling. We use a special property of the Bethe equations for TASEP to reformulate them as a one-body problem. Our method is closely related to the one used to derive exact large deviation functions of the TASEP.

Bethe Ansatz calculation of the spectral gap of the asymmetric exclusion process

We present a new derivation of the spectral gap of the totally asymmetric exclusion process on a half-filled ring of size L by using the Bethe Ansatz. We show that, in the large L limit, the Bethe equations reduce to a simple transcendental equation involving the polylogarithm, a classical special function. By solving that equation, the gap and the dynamical exponent are readily obtained. Our method can be extended to a system with an arbitrary density of particles. Scaling behavior of a nonlinear oscillator with additive noise, white and colored

We study analytically and numerically the problem of a nonlinear mechanical oscillator with additive noise in the absence of damping. We show that the amplitude, the velocity and the energy of the oscillator grow algebraically with time. For Gaussian white noise, an analytical expression for the probability distribution function of the energy is obtained in the long-time limit. In the case of colored, Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise, a self-consistent calculation leads to (different) anomalous diffusion exponents. Dimensional analysis yields the qualitative behavior of the prefactors (generalized diffusion constants) as a function of the correlation time.

Mesoscopic superconductors in the London limit: equilibrium properties and metastability

We present a study of the behaviour of metastable vortex states in mesoscopic superconductors. Our analysis relies on the London limit within which it is possible to derive closed analytical expressions for the magnetic field and the Gibbs free energy. We consider in particular the situation where the vortices are symmetrically distributed along a closed ring. There, we obtain expressions for the confining Bean-Livingston barrier and for the magnetization which turns out to be paramagnetic away from thermodynamic equilibrium. At low temperature, the barrier is high enough for this regime to be observable. We propose also a local description of both thermodynamic and metastable states based on elementary topological considerations; we find structural phase transitions of vortex patterns between these metastable states and we calculate the corresponding critical fields.

A dual point description of mesoscopic superconductors

We present an analysis of the magnetic response of a mesoscopic superconductor, i.e. a system of sizes comparable to the coherence length and to the London penetration depth. Our approach is based on special properties of the two dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equations, satisfied at the dual point $(κ= \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}).$ Closed expressions for the free energy and the magnetization of the superconductor are derived. A perturbative analysis in the vicinity of the dual point allows us to take into account vortex interactions, using a new scaling result for the free energy. In order to characterize the vortex/current interactions, we study vortex configurations that are out of thermodynamical equilibrium. Our predictions agree with the results of recent experiments performed on mesoscopic aluminium disks.

Vortices in small superconducting disks

We study the Ginzburg-Landau equations in order to describe a two-dimensional superconductor in a bounded domain. Using the properties of a particular integrability point ($κ= 1/ \sqrt2$) of these nonlinear equations which allows vortex solutions, we obtain a closed expression for the energy of the superconductor. The presence of the boundary provides a selection mechanism for the number of vortices. A perturbation analysis around $κ= 1/ \sqrt2$ enables us to include the effects of the vortex interactions and to describe quantitatively the magnetization curves recently measured on small superconducting disks. We also calculate the optimal vortex configuration and obtain an expression for the confining potential away from the London limit.

Geometrical description of vortices in Ginzburg-Landau billiards

In these notes we discuss the topological nature of some problems in condensed matter physics. We adopt the language of differential geometry to present this subject and our aim is to develop some intuition towards concepts like curvature, fiber bundles, connexions, characteristic classes and topological invariants. The lectures end with a theoretical analysis of recent experimental results obtained on mesoscopic superconducting films.

Vortices in Ginzburg-Landau billiards

We present an analysis of the Ginzburg-Landau equations for the description of a two-dimensional superconductor in a bounded domain. Using the properties of a special integrability point of these equations which allows vortex solutions, we obtain a closed expression for the energy of the superconductor. The role of the boundary of the system is to provide a selection mechanism for the number of vortices. A geometrical interpretation of these results is presented and they are applied to the analysis of the magnetization recently measured on small superconducting disks. Problems related to the interaction and nucleation of vortices are discussed.
