New results in rho^0 meson physics

We compare the predictions of a range of existing models based on the Vector Meson Dominance hypothesis with data on e^+ e^- -> pi^+ pi^$ and e^+ e^- -> mu^+ mu^- cross-sections and the phase and near-threshold behavior of the timelike pion form factor, with the aim of determining which (if any) of these models is capable of providing an accurate representation of the full range of experimental data. We find that, of the models considered, only that proposed by Bando et al. is able to consistently account for all information, provided one allows its parameter "a" to vary from the usual value of 2 to 2.4. Our fit with this model gives a point-like coupling (gamma pi^+ π^-) of magnitude ~ -e/6, while the common formulation of VMD excludes such a term. The resulting values for the rho mass and pi^+ pi^- and e^+e^- partial widths as well as the branching ratio for the decay omega -> pi^+ pi^- obtained within the context of this model are consistent with previous results.

Violation of the $Δ$I=1/2 rule in the nonmesonic weak decay of $Λ$ hypernuclei

Violations of the $Δ$I=1/2 rule are investigated in the nonmesonic weak hypernuclear decay using a weak $Λ$N$\to$NN transition potential based on meson exchange. While the weak $Δ$I=3/2 matrix elements of baryons with pseudoscalar mesons are known to be very small, the same matrix elements of baryons with vector mesons, evaluated in the factorization approximation, are found to be significant. Within the uncertainties of the factorization approximation we find that the total rate increases by at most 6% lying within the error bars of the more recent experimental result. The neutron- to proton-induced rate, on the other hand, can change by up to a factor of two, while the asymmetry parameter is strongly affected as well.

Systematic Theoretical Search for Dibaryons in a Relativistic Model

A relativistic quark potential model is used to do a systematic search for quasi-stable dibaryon states in the $u$, $d$, and $s$ three flavor world. Flavor symmetry breaking and channel coupling effects are included and an adiabatic method and fractional parentage expansion technique are used in the calculations. The relativistic model predicts dibaryon candidates completely consistent with the nonrelativistic model.

Near-threshold Isospin Violation in the Pion Form Factor from Chiral Perturbation Theory

We examine the isospin violation in the timelike pion form factor near threshold at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion using the techniques of Chiral Perturbation Theory. This next-to-leading order contribution contains the first nonvanishing isospin violation. This isospin violation is found to be very small near threshold. In particular, the isospin violation at threshold is found to be of order 10^-4, which should be compared with the few percent level seen in the vector meson resonance region.

Electromagnetic Corrections to Pi Pi Scattering: Some Lessons for the Implementation of Meson Exchange Models

The leading non-Coulombic electromagnetic contributions to pi pi s-wave scattering lengths are computed in Chiral Perturbation Theory. It is shown that these corrections are zeroth order in the chiral expansion and associated with electromagnetic contact terms in the effective Lagrangian, i.e. that they do not involve explicit photon fields in the low-energy effective theory. It is pointed out that, if one followed the standard meson-exchange-model ansatz for removing electromagnetic effects, i.e. of subtracting contributions associated with explicit photon exchange and radiative corrections, as determined by the photon coupling vertices of the effective hadronic theory, one would completely miss these contributions and arrive at the erroneous conclusion that the strong interactions exhibited very large isospin breaking in pi pi scattering. Implications for electromagnetic "subtraction" procedures in other hadronic systems and the utility of the effective Lagrangian method for avoiding such errors are obvious.

Some New Results on the H Dibaryon in the Quark Cluster Model

The H dibaryon channel, (I=0,J=0,S=-2), is revisited in the non-relativistic quark cluster model (NRQCM) using a basis extended beyond the usual set of baryon cluster pairs to include an explicit spatially symmetric 6q state, analogous in structure to the MIT bag model H. We find that the binding predicted using the two-baryon basis alone is significantly deepened by the addition of the additional 6q configuration. The NRQCM thus appears, contrary to earlier findings, to be incompatible with the experimental information available for this channel.

Analysis of rho-omega interference in the pion form-factor

The formalism underlying the analysis of e+e- -> pi+pi- in the rho-omega interference region is carefully revisited. We show that the standard neglect of the pure I=0 omega, omega_I, `direct'' coupling to pi-pi is not valid, and extract those combinations of the direct coupling and ρ-omega mixing allowed by experiment. The latter is shown to be only very weakly constrained by experiment, and we conclude that data from the e+e- -> pi+pi- interference region cannot be used to fix the value of rho-omega mixing in a model-independent way unless the errors on the experimental phase can be significantly reduced. Certain other modifications of the usual formalism necessitated by the unavoidable momentum-dependence of rho-omega mixing are also discussed.
