An upper limit on the electron-neutrino flux from the HiRes detector

Air-fluorescence detectors such as the High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) detector are very sensitive to upward-going, Earth-skimming ultrahigh energy electron-neutrino-induced showers. This is due to the relatively large interaction cross sections of these high-energy neutrinos and to the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. The LPM effect causes a significant decrease in the cross sections for bremsstrahlung and pair production, allowing charged-current electron-neutrino-induced showers occurring deep in the Earth's crust to be detectable as they exit the Earth into the atmosphere. A search for upward-going neutrino-induced showers in the HiRes-II monocular dataset has yielded a null result. From an LPM calculation of the energy spectrum of charged particles as a function of primary energy and depth for electron-induced showers in rock, we calculate the shape of the resulting profile of these showers in air. We describe a full detector Monte Carlo simulation to determine the detector response to upward-going electron-neutrino-induced cascades and present an upper limit on the flux of electron-neutrinos.

Radio Detection of Neutrinos from Behind a Mountain

We explore the sensitivity of a neutrino detector employing strongly directional high gain radio antennae to detect the conversion of neutrinos above $10^{16}$ eV in a mountain or the earth crust. The directionality of the antennae will allow both, the low threshold and the suppression of background. This technology would have the advantage that it does not require a suitable atmosphere as optical detectors do and could therefore be deployed at any promising place on the planet. In particular one could choose suitable topographies at latitudes that are matched to promising source candidates.

Air fluorescence measurements in the spectral range 300-420 nm using a 28.5 GeV electron beam

Measurements are reported of the yield and spectrum of fluorescence, excited by a 28.5 GeV electron beam, in air at a range of pressures of interest to ultra-high energy cosmic ray detectors. The wavelength range was 300 - 420 nm. System calibration has been performed using Rayleigh scattering of a nitrogen laser beam. In atmospheric pressure dry air at 304 K the yield is 20.8 +/- 1.6 photons per MeV.

HiRes Estimates and Limits for Neutrino Fluxes at the Highest Energies

The High Resolution Fly's Eye Experiment (HiRes) measures cosmic rays (CR) at the highest energies using the air fluorescence technique. As data taking on the Dugway Proving Grounds in Western Utah is finished, the HiRes data are relevant for cosmogenic neutrinos in two different ways. We first use our best fit to the measured HiRes CR spectrum together with a model of the extragalactic CR sources to derive the expected cosmogenic neutrino and gamma ray fluxes at Earth. We then use the HiRes data directly to set competitive experimental limits on the electron and tau neutrino fluxes at the highest energies.

Observation of a resonance in the K$_s$p decay channel at a mass of 1765 MeV/c$^2$

We report on the observation of a K$_s$p resonance signal at a mass of 1765$\pm$5 MeV/c$^2$, with intrinsic width $Γ= 108\pm 22$ MeV/c$^2$, produced inclusively in $Σ^-$-nucleus interactions at 340 GeV/c in the hyperon beam experiment WA89 at CERN. The signal was observed in the kinematic region $x_F>0.7$, in this region its production cross section rises approximately linearly with $(1-x_F)$, reaching $BR(X\to K_S p)\cdot dσ/dx_F = (5.2\pm 2.3) μb $ per nucleon at $x_F=0.8$. The hard \xf spectrum suggests the presence of a strong leading particle effect in the production and hence the identification as a $Σ^{*+}$ state. No corresponding peaks were observed in the $K^- p$ and $Λπ^{\pm}$ mass spectra.
