Measurement of $\Lambda$ Polarization in the $\pi^{-}p \to K^{0} \Lambda$ Reaction at $p_{\pi^{-}}=1.33$ GeV/$c$ toward a New $\Lambda p$ Scattering Experiment

This paper presents high-precision experimental data of the polarization of the $\Lambda$ hyperon in the $\pi^{-}p \to K^{0} \Lambda$ reaction, measured in the angular range $0.6<\cos \theta ^{CM}_{K0}<1.0$ with a fine bin width of $d\cos \theta ^{CM}_{K0}=0.05$. The data were obtained from the J-PARC E40 experiment at the K1.8 beamline in the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. The observed average polarization of $\Lambda$ in the range $0.60<\cos \theta ^{CM}_{K0}<0.85$ was $0.932 \pm 0.058 \,(\text{stat}) \pm 0.028 \,(\text{syst})$, demonstrating the successful extraction of precise polarization observables. This result provides essential experimental input for partial wave analysis (PWA) of dynamical coupled-channel (DCC) models, which aim to uncover the underlying mechanisms of $N^{*}$ resonances that emerge in intermediate states of $\pi N$ and $\gamma N$ interactions. Besides, it indicates the feasibility of a strongly polarized $\Lambda$ beam suitable for future $\Lambda p$ scattering experiments (e.g., J-PARC E86).

180$^\circ$-twisted bilayer ReSe$_2$ as an artificial noncentrosymmetric semiconductor

We have fabricated a 180$^\circ$-twisted bilayer ReSe$_2$ by stacking two centrosymmetric monolayer ReSe$_2$ flakes in opposite directions, which is expected to lose spatial inversion symmetry. By the second harmonic generation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we successfully observed spatial inversion symmetry breaking and emergent band dispersions. The band calculation shows the finite lifting of spin degeneracy (~50 meV) distinct from natural monolayer and bilayer ReSe$_2$. Our results demonstrate that the spin-momentum locked state, which leads to spintronic functions and Berry-curvature-related phenomena, can be realized even with the stacking of centrosymmetric monolayers.

Measurement of differential cross sections for $Σ^+p$ elastic scattering in the momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c

We performed a novel $Σ^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $Σ^+$ particles in the $Σ^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|δ_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $δ_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

Development and application of CATCH: A cylindrical active tracker and calorimeter system for hyperon-proton scattering experiments

In this study, we developed a new proton detector system called CATCH, which was designed for a scattering experiment involving a $Σ$ hyperon and a proton (J-PARC E40). CATCH is a cylindrical detector system covering an inner target that can be used to measure the trajectory and energy of a proton emitted from the target for the kinematic identification of a $Σ$p scattering event. It comprises a cylindrical fiber tracker (CFT), a bismuth germanate (BGO) calorimeter, and a plastic scintillator hodoscope (PiID), which are coaxially arranged from the inner to the outer sides. The CFT is a tracking detector consisting of 5,000 scintillation fibers, and it has two types of cylindrical layers in which the fibers are arranged in straight and spiral configurations. 24 BGO crystals are placed around the CFT to measure the kinetic energy of the recoil proton. The PiID is used to determine whether the recoil proton is stopped in the BGO calorimeter. We performed proton-proton (pp) and proton-carbon (pC) scattering experiments using an 80 MeV proton beam to evaluate the performance of CATCH. The total energy resolution for the recoil proton was 2.8 MeV in $σ$ for the entire angular region after the energy calibrations of the BGO calorimeter and the CFT. The angular resolution of the CFT was 1.27 degrees in $σ$ for the proton, and the time resolution was more than 1.8 ns in $σ$. We also developed an analysis method for deriving the cross section of the pp scattering using CATCH. The obtained relative differential cross section for the pp elastic scattering was consistent with that obtained by reliable partial wave analysis, and the systematic error was maintained at below 10%. These performance results satisfy our requirements for a reliable detection system for the $Σ$p scattering experiment conducted at J-PARC .

Precise measurement of differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction in momentum range 470-650 MeV/c

The differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction were measured accurately for the Σ- momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions. The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cosθ < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Measurement of the differential cross sections of the Sigma-p elastic scattering in momentum range of 470 to 850 MeV/c

A high statistics $Σp$ scattering experiment has been performed at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Data for momentum-tagged $Σ^{-}$ running in a liquid hydrogen target were accumulated by detecting the $π^{-}p \to K^{+}Σ^{-}$ reaction with a high intensity $π^{-}$ beam of 20 M/spill. Differential cross sections of the $Σ^{-}p$ elastic scattering were derived with a drastically improved accuracy by identifying the largest statistics of about 4,500 events from 1.72 $\times$ $10^{7}$ $Σ^{-}$. The derived differential cross section shows a clear forward-peaking angular distribution for a $Σ^{-}$ momentum range from 470 to 850 MeV/$c$. The accurate data will impose a strong constraint on the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Exciton diffusion in a hBN-encapsulated monolayer MoSe2

Excitons, quasi particles composed of an electron and a hole, play an important role in optical responses in low-dimensional nanostructures. In this work, we have investigated exciton diffusion in a monolayer MoSe2 encapsulated between flakes of hexagonal boron nitrides (hBN/MoSe2/hBN). Through PL imaging and numerical solving the 2D diffusion equation, we revealed that temperature dependence of exciton mobility in the hBN/MoSe2/hBN shows non-saturating increase at low temperature, which is qualitatively different from those of quantum wells composed of compound semiconductors. Ultraflat structure of monolayer MoSe2 in the hBN/MoSe2/hBN probably leads to the suppression of charged-impurity scattering and surface-roughness scattering.

Spin splitting and strain in epitaxial monolayer WSe$_2$ on graphene

We present the electronic and structural properties of monolayer WSe$_{2}$ grown by pulsed-laser deposition on monolayer graphene (MLG) on SiC. The spin splitting in the WSe$_{2}$ valence band at $\overline{\mathrm{K}}$ was $Δ_\mathrm{SO}=0.469\pm0.008$ eV by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Synchrotron-based grazing-incidence in-plane X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the in-plane lattice constant of monolayer WSe$_{2}$ to be $a_\mathrm{WSe_2}=3.2757\pm0.0008 \mathrm{Å}$. This indicates a lattice compression of -0.19 % from bulk WSe$_{2}$. By using experimentally determined graphene lattice constant ($a_\mathrm{MLG}=2.4575\pm0.0007 \mathrm{Å}$), we found that a 3$\times$3 unit cell of the slightly compressed WSe$_{2}$ is perfectly commensurate with a 4$\times$4 graphene lattice with a mismatch below 0.03 %, which could explain why the monolayer WSe$_{2}$ is compressed on MLG. From XRD and first-principles calculations, however, we conclude that the observed size of strain is negligibly small to account for a discrepancy in $Δ_\mathrm{SO}$ found between exfoliated and epitaxial monolayers in earlier ARPES. In addition, angle-resolved, ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shed light on the band alignment between WSe$_{2}$ and MLG/SiC and indicate electron transfer from graphene to the WSe$_{2}$ monolayer. As further revealed by atomic force microscopy, the WSe$_{2}$ island size depends on the number of carbon layers on top of the SiC substrate. This suggests that the epitaxy of WSe$_{2}$ favors the weak van der Waals interactions with graphene while it is perturbed by the influence of the SiC substrate and its carbon buffer layer.

Detection of collective optic excitations in molten NaI

High-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering measurements were carried out on molten NaI near the melting point at 680$^\circ$C at SPring-8. Small and damped indications of longitudinal optic excitation modes were observed on the tails of the longitudinal acoustic modes at small momentum transfers, $Q\sim5$ nm$^{-1}$. The measured spectra are in good agreement, in both frequency and linewidth, with {\it ab initio} molecular dynamics (MD) simulations but not classical MD simulations. The observation of these modes at small $Q$ and a good agreement with the simulation permits clear identification of these as collective optic modes with well defined phasing between different ionic motions.

Missing-mass spectroscopy with the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction to search for ${}^{6}_Λ$H

We searched for the bound state of the neutron-rich $Λ$-hypernucleus ${}^{6}_Λ$H, using the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X double charge-exchange reaction at a $π^{-}$ beam momentum of 1.2 GeV/c at J-PARC. A total of $1.4 \times 10^{12}$ $π^{-}$ was driven onto a ${}^{6}$Li target of 3.5-g/$\rm cm^2$ thickness. No event was observed below the bound threshold, i.e., the mass of ${}^{4}_Λ$H + 2n, in the missing-mass spectrum of the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction in the $2^{\circ}$ < $θ_{πK}$ < $20^{\circ}$ angular range. Furthermore, no event was found up to 2.8 MeV/$c^2$ above the bound threshold. We obtained the the double-differential cross section spectra of the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction in the angular range of $2^{\circ}$ < $θ_{πK}$ < $14^{\circ}$. An upper limit of 0.56 nb/sr (90% C.L.) was obtained for the production cross section of the ${}^{6}_Λ$H hypernucleus bound state. In addition, not only the bound state region, but also the $Λ$ continuum region and part of the $Σ^{-}$ quasi-free production region of the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction, were obtained with high statistics. The present missing-mass spectrum will facilitate the investigation of the $Σ^{-}$-nucleus optical potential for $Σ^{-}$-${}^{5}$He through spectrum shape analysis.

Search for $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus by the $^6$Li$(π^-,K^+)$ reaction at $p_{π^-}$ = 1.2 GeV/$c$

We have carried out an experiment to search for a neutron-rich hypernucleus, $^6_Λ$H, by the $^6$Li($π^-,K^+$) reaction at $p_{π^-}$ =1.2 GeV/$c$. The obtained missing mass spectrum with an estimated energy resolution of 3.2 MeV (FWHM) showed no peak structure corresponding to the $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus neither below nor above the $^4_Λ$H$+2n$ particle decay threshold. An upper limit of the production cross section for the bound $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus was estimated to be 1.2 nb/sr at 90% confidence level.

Existence of a phase transition under finite magnetic field in the long-range RKKY Ising spin glass Dy$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$

A phase transition of a model compound of the long-range Ising spin glass (SG) Dy$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, where spins interact via the RKKY interaction, has been investigated. The static and the dynamic scaling analyses reveal that the SG phase transition in the model magnet belongs to the mean-field universality class. Moreover, the characteristic relaxation time in finite magnetic fields exhibits a critical divergent behavior as well as in zero field, indicating a stability of the SG phase in finite fields. The presence of the SG phase transition in field in the model magnet strongly syggests that the replica symmetry is broken in the long-range Ising SG.

Production of Neutron-Rich Lambda Hypernuclei at J-PARC

We discuss the usefulness of the double charge-exchange reactions (DCX) for the production of the neutron-rich Lambda-hypernuclei. We believe the (pi-,K+) reaction is one of the most promising DCX reactions, and propose to produce the neutron-rich Lambda-hypernuclei, 6(Lambda)H and 9(Lambda)He, at the J-PARC 50 GeV PS by the reaction (J-PARC E10 experiment). The design of the experiment is presented.

Variational Approach to the Chiral Phase Transition in the Linear Sigma Model

The chiral phase transition at finite temperature is investigated in the linear sigma model, which is regarded as a low energy effective theory of QCD with three momentum cutoff, in the variational method with the Gaussian approximation in the functional Schroedinger picture. It is shown that the Goldstone theorem is retained and the meson pair excitations are automatically included by taking into account the linear response to the external fields. It is pointed out that the behavior of chiral phase transition depends on the three-momentum cutoff, which leads to the careful treatment of the problem.

Variational Monte Carlo Study of a Spinless Fermion t-V Model on a Triangular Lattice: Formation of a Pinball Liquid

We analyze a model of spinless fermions on a triangular lattice at half-filling interacting via strong nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions, V, using the variational Monte Carlo simulation technique. The existence of three-sublattice long-range order is confirmed by the finite-size scaling analysis of the charge structural factor at V_c/t > 12. This ordered phase shows characteristics expected for a so called "pinball liquid" state, which has the spontaneous separation of fermionic degrees of freedom into coexisting Wigner crystal-like charge order (pin) and a metal (ball). The pins are fixed in order to maximize the kinetic energy gain of balls which move almost freely. The Fermi surface is reconstructed at V=V_c and remains towards the strong coupling limit. These features reminiscent of the strong correlation together with the large value of V_c/t distinguishes the pinball liquid from the conventional charge-density-wave.

Projection Method for Exact Diagonalization in the Strong Coupling Limit for Frustrated Models with Highly Degenerate Ground States

In this paper, we carry out a new technique named projection ED and indicate that it is applicable to the frustrated models, e.g., XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg and spinless fermion t-V models, in the strong coupling limit with highly degenerate ground states in a general way. As an example, we deal with a spinless fermion t-V model on a triangular lattice and show the usefulness of the method.

Spectropolarimetry of R Coronae Borealis in 1998--2003: Discovery of Transient Polarization at Maximum Brightness

We present an extended optical spectropolarimetry of R CrB from 1998 January to 2003 September. The polarization was almost constant in the phase of maximum brightness, being consistent with past observations. We detected, however, temporal changes of polarization ($\sim 0.5$ %) in 2001 March and August, which were the first detection of large polarization variability in R CrB near maximum brightness. The amplitude and the position angle of the `transient polarization' were almost constant with wavelength in both two events. There was a difference by about 20 degrees in the position angle between the two events. Each event could be explained by light scattering due to short-lived dust puff occasionally ejected off the line of sight. The flatness of the polarization against the wavelength suggests that the scatterer is a mixture of dust grains having various sizes. The rapid growth and fading of the transient polarization favors the phenomenological model of dust formation near the stellar photosphere (e.g., within two stellar radii) proposed for the time evolution of brightness and chromospheric emission lines during deeply declining periods, although the fading timescale can hardly be explained by a simple dispersal of expanding dust puff with a velocity of $\sim 200-350$ km s $^{-1}$. Higher expansion velocity or some mechanism to destroy the dust grains should be needed.

Pressure-temperature phase diagram of the heavy-electron superconductor URu2Si2

The pressure-temperature phase diagram of the heavy-electron superconductor URu2Si2 has been reinvestigated by ac-susceptibility and elastic neutron-scattering (NS) measurements performed on a small single-crystalline rod (2 mm in diameter, 6 mm in length) in a Cu-Be clamp-type high-pressure cell (P < 1.1 GPa). At ambient pressure, this sample shows the weakest antiferromagnetic (AF) Bragg reflections reported so far, corresponding to the volume-averaged staggered moment of mord ~ 0.011 mB/U. Under applied pressure, the AF scattering intensity exhibits a sharp increase at P ~ 0.7 GPa at low temperatures. The saturation value of the AF scattering intensity above 0.7 GPa corresponds to mord ~ 0.41 mB/U, which is in good agreement with that (~ 0.39 mB/U) observed above 1.5 GPa in our previous NS measurements. The superconductivity is dramatically suppressed by the evolution of AF phase, indicating that the superconducting state coexists only with the hidden order phase. The presence of parasitic ferro- and/or antiferromagnetic phases with transition temperatures T1star =120(5) K, T2star = 36(3) K and T3star = 16.5(5) K and their relationship to the low-T ordered phases are also discussed.
