High accuracy measurement of gravitational wave back-reaction in the OJ287 black hole binary

Blazar OJ287 exhibits large thermal flares at least twice every 12 years. The times of these flares have been predicted successfully using the model of a quasi-Keplerian eccentric black hole binary where the secondary impacts the accretion disk of the primary, creating the thermal flares. New measurements of the historical light curve have been combined with the observations of the 2015 November/December flare to identify the impact record since year 1886, and to constrain the orbit of the binary. The orbit solution shows that the binary period, now 12.062 year, is decreasing at the rate of 36 days per century. This corresponds to an energy loss to gravitational waves that is 6.5 +- 4 % less than the rate predicted by the standard quadrupolar gravitational wave (GW) emission. We show that the difference is due to higher order gravitational radiation reaction terms that include the dominant order tail contributions.

Stochastic modeling of multiwavelength variability of the classical BL Lac object OJ 287 on timescales ranging from decades to hours

We present the results of our power spectral density analysis for the BL Lac object OJ\,287, utilizing the {\it Fermi}-LAT survey at high-energy $γ$-rays, {\it Swift}-XRT in X-rays, several ground-based telescopes and the {\it Kepler} satellite in the optical, and radio telescopes at GHz frequencies. The light curves are modeled in terms of continuous-time auto-regressive moving average (CARMA) processes. Owing to the inclusion of the {\it Kepler} data, we were able to construct \emph{for the first time} the optical variability power spectrum of a blazar without any gaps across $\sim6$ dex in temporal frequencies. Our analysis reveals that the radio power spectra are of a colored-noise type on timescales ranging from tens of years down to months, with no evidence for breaks or other spectral features. The overall optical power spectrum is also consistent with a colored noise on the variability timescales ranging from 117 years down to hours, with no hints of any quasi-periodic oscillations. The X-ray power spectrum resembles the radio and optical power spectra on the analogous timescales ranging from tens of years down to months. Finally, the $γ$-ray power spectrum is noticeably different from the radio, optical, and X-ray power spectra of the source: we have detected a characteristic relaxation timescale in the {\it Fermi}-LAT data, corresponding to $\sim 150$\,days, such that on timescales longer than this, the power spectrum is consistent with uncorrelated (white) noise, while on shorter variability timescales there is correlated (colored) noise.

Breaking the habit - the peculiar 2016 eruption of the unique recurrent nova M31N 2008-12a

Since its discovery in 2008, the Andromeda galaxy nova M31N 2008-12a has been observed in eruption every single year. This unprecedented frequency indicates an extreme object, with a massive white dwarf and a high accretion rate, which is the most promising candidate for the single-degenerate progenitor of a type-Ia supernova known to date. The previous three eruptions of M31N 2008-12a have displayed remarkably homogeneous multi-wavelength properties: (i) From a faint peak, the optical light curve declined rapidly by two magnitudes in less than two days; (ii) Early spectra showed initial high velocities that slowed down significantly within days and displayed clear He/N lines throughout; (iii) The supersoft X-ray source (SSS) phase of the nova began extremely early, six days after eruption, and only lasted for about two weeks. In contrast, the peculiar 2016 eruption was clearly different. Here we report (i) the considerable delay in the 2016 eruption date, (ii) the significantly shorter SSS phase, and (iii) the brighter optical peak magnitude (with a hitherto unobserved cusp shape). Early theoretical models suggest that these three different effects can be consistently understood as caused by a lower quiescence mass-accretion rate. The corresponding higher ignition mass caused a brighter peak in the free-free emission model. The less-massive accretion disk experienced greater disruption, consequently delaying re-establishment of effective accretion. Without the early refueling, the SSS phase was shortened. Observing the next few eruptions will determine whether the properties of the 2016 outburst make it a genuine outlier in the evolution of M31N 2008-12a.

Temperature dependence of universal conductance fluctuation due to development of weak localization in graphene

The temperature effect of quantum interference on resistivity is examined in monolayer graphene, with experimental results showing that the amplitude of the conductance fluctuation increases as temperature decreases. We find that this behavior can be attributed to the decrease in the inelastic scattering (dephasing) rate, which enhances the weak localization (WL) correction to resistivity. Following a previous report that explained the relationship between the universal conductance fluctuation (UCF) and WL regarding the gate voltage dependence (D. Terasawa, et al., Phys. Rev. B 95 125427 (2017)), we propose that the temperature dependence of the UCF in monolayer graphene can be interpreted by the WL theory.

Radio and optical intra-day variability observations of five blazars

We carried out a pilot campaign of radio and optical band intra-day variability (IDV) observations of five blazars (3C66A, S5 0716+714, OJ287, B0925+504, and BL Lacertae) on December 18--21, 2015 by using the radio telescope in Effelsberg (Germany) and several optical telescopes in Asia, Europe, and America. After calibration, the light curves from both 5 GHz radio band and the optical R band were obtained, although the data were not smoothly sampled over the sampling period of about four days. We tentatively analyse the amplitudes and time scales of the variabilities, and any possible periodicity. The blazars vary significantly in the radio (except 3C66A and BL Lacertae with only marginal variations) and optical bands on intra- and inter-day time scales, and the source B0925+504 exhibits a strong quasi-periodic radio variability. No significant correlation between the radio- and optical-band variability appears in the five sources, which we attribute to the radio IDV being dominated by interstellar scintillation whereas the optical variability comes from the source itself. However, the radio- and optical-band variations appear to be weakly correlated in some sources and should be investigated based on well-sampled data from future observations.

Relationship between conductance fluctuation and weak localization in graphene

The relationship between the universal conductance fluctuation and the weak localization effect in monolayer graphene is investigated. By comparing experimental results with the predictions of the weak localization theory for graphene, we find that the ratio of the elastic intervalley scattering time to the inelastic dephasing time varies in accordance with the conductance fluctuation; this is a clear evidence connecting the universal conductance fluctuation with the weak localization effect. We also find a series of scattering lengths that are related to the phase shifts caused by magnetic flux by Fourier analysis.

Measurements of cosmic-ray proton and helium spectra from the BESS-Polar long-duration balloon flights over Antarctica

The BESS-Polar Collaboration measured the energy spectra of cosmic-ray protons and helium during two long-duration balloon flights over Antarctica in December 2004 and December 2007, at substantially different levels of solar modulation. Proton and helium spectra probe the origin and propagation history of cosmic rays in the galaxy, and are essential to calculations of the expected spectra of cosmic-ray antiprotons, positrons, and electrons from interactions of primary cosmic-ray nuclei with the interstellar gas, and to calculations of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We report absolute spectra at the top of the atmosphere for cosmic-ray protons in the kinetic energy range 0.2-160 GeV and helium nuclei 0.15-80 GeV/nucleon. The corresponding magnetic rigidity ranges are 0.6-160 GV for protons and 1.1-160 GV for helium. These spectra are compared to measurements from previous BESS flights and from ATIC-2, PAMELA, and AMS-02. We also report the ratio of the proton and helium fluxes from 1.1 GV to 160 GV and compare to ratios from PAMELA and AMS-02.

Primary black hole spin in OJ287 as determined by the General Relativity centenary flare

OJ287 is a quasi-periodic quasar with roughly 12 year optical cycles. It displays prominent outbursts which are predictable in a binary black hole model. The model predicted a major optical outburst in December 2015. We found that the outburst did occur within the expected time range, peaking on 2015 December 5 at magnitude 12.9 in the optical R-band. Based on Swift/XRT satellite measurements and optical polarization data, we find that it included a major thermal component. Its timing provides an accurate estimate for the spin of the primary black hole, chi = 0.313 +- 0.01. The present outburst also confirms the established general relativistic properties of the system such as the loss of orbital energy to gravitational radiation at the 2 % accuracy level and it opens up the possibility of testing the black hole no-hair theorem with a 10 % accuracy during the present decade.

Optical and Near-Infrared Polarimetry of Highly Reddened Type Ia Supernova 2014J: Peculiar Properties of Dust in M82

We presented optical and near-infrared multi-band linear polarimetry of the highly reddened Type Ia SN~2014J appeared in M82. SN~2014J exhibits large polarization at shorter wavelengths, e.g., $4.8$\% in $B$ band, and the polarization decreases rapidly at longer wavelengths, with the position angle of the polarization remaining at approximately $40^{\circ}$ over the observed wavelength range. These polarimetric properties suggest that the observed polarization is likely to be caused predominantly by the interstellar dust within M82. Further analysis shows that the polarization peaks at a wavelengths much shorter than those obtained for the Galactic dust. The wavelength dependence of the polarization can be better described by an inverse power law rather than by Serkowski law for Galactic interstellar polarization. These suggests that the nature of the dust in M82 may be different from that in our Galaxy, with polarizing dust grains having a mean radius of $<0.1\ μ$m.

Search for Antihelium with the BESS-Polar Spectrometer

In two long-duration balloon flights over Antarctica, the BESS-Polar collaboration has searched for antihelium in the cosmic radiation with higher sensitivity than any reported investigation. BESS- Polar I flew in 2004, observing for 8.5 days. BESS-Polar II flew in 2007-2008, observing for 24.5 days. No antihelium candidate was found in BESS-Polar I data among 8.4\times 10^6 |Z| = 2 nuclei from 1.0 to 20 GV or in BESS-Polar II data among 4.0\times 10^7 |Z| = 2 nuclei from 1.0 to 14 GV. Assuming antihelium to have the same spectral shape as helium, a 95% confidence upper limit of 6.9 \times 10^-8 was determined by combining all the BESS data, including the two BESS-Polar flights. With no assumed antihelium spectrum and a weighted average of the lowest antihelium efficiencies from 1.6 to 14 GV, an upper limit of 1.0 \times 10^-7 was determined for the combined BESS-Polar data. These are the most stringent limits obtained to date.

Novel Quantum Criticality in CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ near Absolute Zero Observed by Thermal Expansion and Magnetostriction

We report linear thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements for CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ in magnetic fields up to 52.6 mT and at temperatures down to 1 mK. At high temperatures, this compound showed Landau-Fermi-liquid behavior: The linear thermal expansion coefficient and the magnetostriction coefficient were proportional to the temperature and magnetic field, respectively. In contrast, a pronounced non-Fermi-liquid effect was found below 50 mK. The negative contribution of thermal expansion and magnetostriction suggests the existence of an additional quantum critical point.

Measurement of cosmic-ray low-energy antiproton spectrum with the first BESS-Polar Antarctic flight

The BESS-Polar spectrometer had its first successful balloon flight over Antarctica in December 2004. During the 8.5-day long-duration flight, almost 0.9 billion events were recorded and 1,520 antiprotons were detected in the energy range 0.1-4.2 GeV. In this paper, we report the antiproton spectrum obtained, discuss the origin of cosmic-ray antiprotons, and use antiprotons to probe the effect of charge sign dependent drift in the solar modulation.

Porosity dependence of sound propagation in liquid $^4$He filled aerogel

Longitudinal sound wave propagation has been studied in an aerogel-liquid $^4$He system for various porosities of aerogel. The superfluid transition was identified as the absorption peak, whose magnitude was suppressed by aerogel. The sound velocity was analyzed within a hydrodynamic theory in both normal and superfluid phases. The absorption peak due to phonon-roton interaction around 1 K was not observed even with the most porous aerogel. The low temperature sound velocity and attenuation show that direct collisions of phonons with aerogel strands plays an important role in the acoustic properties.

Superhumps and Repetitive Rebrightenings of the WZ Sge-Type Dwarf Nova, EG Cancri

We report on time-resolved photometric observations of the WZ Sge-type dwarf nova, EG Cnc (Huruhata's variable, see also http://www.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/DNe/egcnc.html), during its superoutburst in 1996-1997. EG Cnc, after the main superoutburst accompanied with development of superhumps typical of a WZ Sge-type dwarf nova, exhibited a series of six major rebrightenings. During these rebrightenings and the following long fading tail, EG Cnc persistently showed superhumps having a period equal to the superhump period observed during the main superoutburst. The persistent superhumps had a constant superhump flux with respect to the rebrightening phase. These findings suggest the superhumps observed during the rebrightening stage and the fading tail are a "remnant" of usual superhumps, and are not newly triggered by rebrightenings. By comparison with the 1977 outburst of this object and outbursts of other WZ Sge-type dwarf novae, we propose an activity sequence of WZ Sge-type superoutbursts, in which the current outburst of EG Cnc is placed between a single-rebrightening event and distinct outbursts separated by a dip. The post-superoutburst behavior of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae can be understood in the presence of considerable amount of remnant matter behind the cooling front in the outer accretion disk, even after the main superoutburst. We consider the premature quenching of the hot state due to the weak tidal effect under the extreme mass ratio of the WZ Sge-type binary is responsible for the origin of the remnant mass.

An atlas of line profile studies for SU UMa type cataclysmic variables

We present H-alpha line-profile analyses for the seven SU UMa type dwarf novae AK Cnc, WX Cet, AQ Eri, VW Hyi, RZ Leo, TU Men, and HS Vir. All data sets are treated in the same manner, applying a sequence of techniques for each system. The basic ingredients of this sequence are the diagnostic diagram to determine the zero point of the orbital phase, and Doppler tomography to visualise the emission distribution. We furthermore introduce a new qualitative way of to evaluate the Doppler fit, by comparing the line profile of the reconstructed with the original spectrum in the form of the V/R plot. We present the results of the analysis in the compact form of an atlas, allowing a direct comparison of the emission distribution in our targets. Although most of the data sets were not taken with the intention of a line-profile analysis, we obtain significant results and are able to indicate the type of the additional emission in these systems. Our objects should have in principle very similar physical properties, i.e. they cover only a small range in orbital periods, mass ratios, and mass-transfer rates. Nevertheless, we find a large variety of phenomena both with respect to the individual systems and also within individual data sets of the same object. This includes `canonical' additional emission components from the secondary star and the bright spot, but also emission from the leading side of the accretion disc.

Ac Susceptibility and Static Magnetization Measurements of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ at Small Magnetic Fields and Ultra Low Temperatures

The magnetic properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ at microkelvin temperatures (down to 170 $μ$K) and ultra small magnetic fields ($0.02\sim6.21$ mT) are investigated experimentally for the first time. The simultaneously measured ac susceptibility and static magnetization show neither evidence of the magnetic ordering, superconductivity down to the lowest temperatures nor conventional Landau Fermi-Liquid behavior. The results imply the magnetic transition temperature in undoped CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ is very close to absolute 0 K. The possibility for proximity of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ to the quantum critical point without any doping is discussed.

Irrversibility of Entanglement Manipulations: Vagueness of the Entanglement of Cost and Entanglement of Distillation

We show that the entanglement of cost and entanglement of distillation can be vague when we consider a more general form of entanglement manipulation in which we collectively deal with not only states of our concern but also other states. We introduce the most general entanglement manipulation in which the formation and distillation can be simultaneously performed. We show that in a certain case entanglement manipulations are reversible with respect to the most general entanglement manipulation. This broadens our scope of vision on the irreversibility of entanglement manipulations.

The SU UMa Nature of the Dwarf Nova, DM Lyrae

We carried out time-resolved $V$-band photometry of DM Lyr during long outbursts in 1996 July and in 1996 February-March at Ouda Station, Kyoto University and at Osaka Kyoiku University. Since superhumps were clearly detected in the light curves, DM Lyr was first identified with an SU UMa-type dwarf nova. The superhump period is 0.0673(2) d, and the superhump excess is 2.8(3) %. The duration of the superoutburst, the outburst amplitude, the decline rate in the plateau phase, and the superhump excess were typical values for a usual SU UMa star. According to visual and CCD observations reported to VSNET, this star has experienced a dramatic change of the outburst pattern from a superoutburst phase to a normal outburst phase. There may exist mechanisms to decrease the number of the normal outburst between two successive superoutbursts and to elongate the recurrence cycle of the superoutburst.
