Semiclassical origin of asymmetric nuclear fission: Nascent-fragment shell effect in periodic-orbit theory

The origin of the asymmetry in the fragment mass distribution of low-energy nuclear fission is considered from the semiclassical point of view. Using the semiclassical periodic-orbit theory, one can define and quantify the shell effect associated with spatially localized nascent-fragment (prefragment) part of the potential. We investigate the roles of prefragments in the deformed shell effect using a simple cavity potential model but with realistic shape degrees of freedom for describing the fission processes. The results suggest that the prefragment magic numbers play essential roles in determining the shapes at the fission saddles, which should have a close relation to the fragment mass distribution.

High-spin torus isomers and their precession motions

We systematically investigate the existence of exotic torus isomers and their precession motions for a series of $N=Z$ even-even nuclei from $^{28}$Si to $^{56}$Ni. We analyze the microscopic shell structure of the torus isomer and discuss why the torus shape is generated beyond the limit of large oblate deformation. We use the cranked three-dimensional Hartree-Fock (HF) method with various Skyrme interactions in a systematic search for high-spin torus isomers. We use the three-dimensional time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) method for describing the precession motion of the torus isomer. We obtain high-spin torus isomers in $^{36}$Ar, $^{40}$Ca, $^{44}$Ti, $^{48}$Cr, and $^{52}$Fe. The emergence of the torus isomers is associated with the alignments of single-particle angular momenta, which is the same mechanism as found in $^{40}$Ca. It is found that all the obtained torus isomers execute the precession motion at least two rotational periods. The moment of inertia about a perpendicular axis, which characterizes the precession motion, is found to be close to the classical rigid-body value. The high-spin torus isomer of $^{40}$Ca is not an exceptional case. Similar torus isomers exist widely in nuclei from $^{36}$Ar to $^{52}$Fe and they execute the precession motion. The torus shape is generated beyond the limit of large oblate deformation by eliminating the $0s$ components from all the deformed single-particle wave functions to maximize their mutual overlaps.

Quadrupole shape dynamics in view from a theory of large amplitude collective motion

Low-lying quadrupole shape dynamics is a typical manifestation of large amplitude collective motion in finite nuclei. To describe the dynamics on a microscopic foundation, we have formulated a consistent scheme in which the Bohr collective Hamiltonian for the five dimensional quadrupole shape variables is derived on the basis of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. It enables us to incorporates the Thouless-Valatin effect on the shape inertial functions, which has been neglected in previous microscopic Bohr Hamiltonian approaches. Quantitative successes are illustrated for the low-lying spectra in $^{68}$Se, $^{30-34}$Mg and $^{58-64}$Cr, which display shape-coexistence, -mixing and -transitional behaviors.

Pure Collective Precession Motion of High-Spin Torus Isomer

We investigate the precession motion of the exotic torus configuration in high-spin excited states of $^{40}$Ca. For this aim, we use the three-dimensional time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) method. Although the high-spin torus isomer is a unique quantum object characterized by the alignment of angular momenta of independent single-particle motions, we find that the obtained moment of inertia for rotations about an axis perpendicular to the symmetry axis is close to the rigid-body value. We also analyze the microscopic structure of the precession motion using the random-phase approximation (RPA) method for high-spin states. In the RPA calculation, the precession motion of the torus isomer is generated by coherent superposition of many one-particle-one-hole excitations across the sloping Fermi surface that strongly violates the time-reversal symmetry. By comparing results of the TDHF and the RPA calculations, we find that the precession motion obtained by the TDHF calculation is a pure collective motion well decoupled from other collective modes.

Existence of exotic torus configuration in high-spin excited states of $^{40}$Ca

We investigate the possibility of the existence of the exotic torus configuration in the high-spin excited states of $^{40}$Ca. We here consider the spin alignments about the symmetry axis. To this end, we use a three-dimensional cranked Skyrme Hartree-Fock method and search for stable single-particle configurations. We find one stable state with the torus configuration at the total angular momentum $J=$ 60 $\hbar$ and an excitation energy of about 170 MeV in all calculations using various Skyrme interactions. The total angular momentum J=60 $\hbar$ consists of aligned 12 nucleons with the orbital angular momenta $Λ=+4$, +5, and +6 for spin up-down neutrons and protons. The obtained results strongly suggest that a macroscopic amount of circulating current breaking the time-reversal symmetry emerges in the high-spin excited state of $^{40}$Ca.

Open problems in microscopic theory of large-amplitude collective motion

Construction of the microscopic theory of large-amplitude collective motion, capable of describing a wide variety of quantum collective phenomena in nuclei, is a long-standing and fundamental subject in the study of nuclear many-body systems. Present status of the challenge toward this goal is discussed taking the shape coexistence/mixing phenomena as typical manifestations of the large-amplitude collective motion at zero temperature. Some open problems in rapidly rotating cold nuclei are also briefly discussed in this connection.

Gamow-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Method: Representation of quasiparticles with Berggren sets of wave functions

Single-particle resonant states, also called Gamow states, as well as bound and scattering states of complex energy form a complete set, the Berggren completeness relation. It is the building block of the recently introduced Gamow Shell Model, where weakly bound and resonant nuclear wave functions are expanded with a many-body basis of Slater Determinants generated by this set of single-particle states. However, Gamow states have never been studied in the context of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory, except in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schriefer (BCS) approximation, where both the upper and lower components of a quasiparticle wave function are assumed to possess the same radial dependence with that of a Gamow state associated with the Hartree-Fock potential. Hence, an extension of the notion of Gamow state has to be effected in the domain of quasiparticles. It is shown theoretically and numerically that bound, resonant and scattering quasiparticles are well defined and form a complete set, by which bound Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov ground states can be constructed. It is also shown that the Gamow-Hartree-Fock single-particle basis can be used to solve the Gamow-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov problem. As an illustration, the proposed method is applied to neutron-rich Nickel isotopes close to the neutron drip-line.

A New Efficient Method of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Calculation for Weakly Bound Nuclei

We propose a new method to solve the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations for weakly bound nuclei, which works for both spherical and axially deformed cases. In this approach, the quasiparticle wave functions are expanded in a complete set of analytical Poschl-Teller-Ginocchio and Bessel/Coulomb wave functions. Correct asymptotic properties of the quasiparticle wave functions are endowed in the proposed algorithm. Good agreement is obtained with the results of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculation using the box boundary condition for a set of benchmark spherical and deformed nuclei.

Pairing and continuum effects on low-frequency quadrupole vibrations in deformed Mg isotopes close to the neutron drip line

Low-frequency quadrupole vibrational modes in deformed $^{36,38,40}$Mg close to the neutron drip line are studied by means of the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation based on the coordinate-space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism. Strongly collective $K^π=0^{+}$ and $2^{+}$ excitation modes carrying 10-20 Weisskopf units in the intrinsic isoscalar quadrupole transition strengths are obtained at about 3 MeV. There are two reasons for the enhancement of the transition strengths. First, the quasiparticle wave functions generating these modes possess spatially very extended structure. The asymptotic selection rules characterizing the $β$ and $γ$ vibrations in stable deformed nuclei are thus strongly violated. Second, the dynamic pairing effects act strongly to enhance the collectivity of these modes. It is suggested that the lowest $K^π=0^{+}$ collective mode is a particularly sensitive indicator of the nature of pairing correlations in deformed nuclei close to the neutron drip line.

Mixed Representation RPA Calculation for Octupole Excitations on Superdeformed Sates in the 40Ca and Neutron-Rich Sulfur Regions

By means of the mixed representation RPA based on the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock mean field, we investigate low-frequency octupole excitations built on the superdeformed (SD) states in the N=Z nuclei around 40Ca and the neutron-rich Sulfur isotopes. The RPA calculation is carried out fully self-consistently on the three-dimensional Cartesian mesh in a box, and yields a number of low-frequency octupole vibrations built on the SD states in 32S, 36Ar, 40Ca and 44Ti. In particular, a strongly collective K^π=1^- octupole vibration is suggested to appear on top of the SD state in 40Ca. For 48,50S close to the neutron drip line, we find that the low-lying state created by the excitation of a single neutron from a loosely bound low Omega level to a high Omega resonance level acquires an extremely strong octupole transition strength due to the spatially very extended structure of the particle-hole wave functions.

Collective Paths Connecting the Oblate and Prolate Shapes in 68Se and 72Kr Suggested by the Adiabatic Self-Consistent Collective Coordinate Method

By means of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method and the pairing-plus-quadrupole interaction, we have obtained the self-consistent collective path connecting the oblate and prolate local minima in 68Se and 72Kr for the first time. The self-consistent collective path is found to run approximately along the valley connecting the oblate and prolate local minima in the collective potential energy landscape. This result of calculation clearly indicates the importance of triaxial deformation dynamics in oblate-prolate shape coexistence phenomena.

Collective Path Connecting the Oblate and Prolate Local Minima in 68Se

By means of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method and the pairing plus quadrupole interaction, we have obtained the selfconsistent collective path connecting the oblate and prolate local minima in 68Se for the first time. Along the collective path, the triaxial deformation parameter (gamma) changes between 0 and 60 (degree) keeping the axially symmetric deformation parameter (beta) approximately constant, indicating the importance of triaxial deformation dynamics in the oblate-prolate shape coexistence phenomena.

Superdeformed bands in neutron-rich Sulfur isotopes suggested by cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculations

On the basis of the cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculations in the three-dimensional coordinate-mesh representation, we suggest that, in addition to the well-known candidate 32S, the neutron-rich nucleus 36S and the drip-line nuclei,48S and 50S, are also good candidates for finding superdeformed rotational bands in Sulfur isotopes. Calculated density distributions for the superdeformed states in 48S and 50S exhibit superdeformed neutron skins

Application of the Adiabatic Selfconsistent-Collective-Coordinate Method to a Solvable Model of Prolate-Oblate Shape Coexistence

The adiabatic selfconsistent collective coordinate method is applied to an exactly solvable multi-O(4) model which simulates nuclear shape coexistence phenomena. Collective mass and dynamics of large amplitude collective motions in this model system are analysed, and it is shown that the method can well describe the tunneling motions through the barrier between the prolate and oblate local minima in the collective potential. Emergence of the doublet pattern is well reproduced.

Mean-field approach to superdeformed high-spin states in 40Ca and neutron-rich 50S regions

With the use of the symmetry-unrestricted cranked SHF method in the 3D coordinate-mesh representation, a systematic search for the SD and HD rotational bands in the N=Z nuclei from 32S to 48Cr has been done, and SD and HD solutions have been found in 32S, 36Ar, 40Ca, 44Ti, and in 36Ar, 40Ca, 44Ti, 48Cr, respectively. The SD band in 40Ca is found to be extremely soft against both the axially symmetric (Y30) and asymmetric (Y31) octupole deformations. Possible presense of SD states in neutron-rich sulfur isotopes from 46S to 52S has also been investigated, and deformation properties of neutron skins both in the ground and SD states are discussed.

Periodic Orbits and Deformed Shell Structure

Relationship between quantum shell structure and classical periodic orbits is briefly reviewed on the basis of semi-classical trace formula. Using the spheroidal cavity model, it is shown that three-dimensional periodic orbits, which are born out of bifurcation of planar orbits at large prolate deformations, generate the superdeformed shell structure.

Symmetry Breaking and Bifurcations in the Periodic Orbit Theory: II -- Spheroidal Cavity --

We derive a semiclassical trace formula for the level density of the three-dimensional spheroidal cavity. To overcome the divergences and discontinuities occurring at bifurcation points and in the spherical limit, the trace integrals over the action-angle variables are performed using an improved stationary phase method. The resulting semiclassical level density oscillations and shell energies are in good agreement with quantum-mechanical results. We find that the births of three-dimensional orbits through the bifurcations of planar orbits in the equatorial plane lead to considerable enhancement of shell effect for superdeformed shapes.

Cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculation for superdeformed and hyperdeformed rotational bands in N=Z nuclei from 32S to 48Cr

With the use of the symmetry-unrestricted cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method in the three-dimensional coordinate-mesh representation, we have carried out a systematic theoretical search for the superdeformed and hyperdeformed rotational bands in the mass A=30-50 region. Along the N=Z line, we have found superdeformed solutions in 32S, 36Ar, 40Ca, 44Ti, and hyperdeformed solutions in 36Ar, 40Ca, 44Ti, 48Cr. The superdeformed band in 40Ca is found to be extremely soft against both the axially symmteric (Y30) and asymmetric (Y31) octupole deformations. An interesting role of symmetry breaking in the mean field is pointed out.
