QED and strong isospin corrections in the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon

Recently, the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal collaboration achieved sub-percent precision in the evaluation of the lowest-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g_μ-2$ (arXiv:hep-lat/2002.12347v3). At this level of precision, isospin-symmetric QCD is not sufficient. In this contribution we review how QED and strong-isospin-breaking effects have been included in our work. Isospin breaking is implemented by expanding the relevant correlation functions to second order in the electric charge $e$ and to first order in $m_u-m_d$. The correction terms are then computed using isospin-symmetric configurations. The choice of this approach allows us to better distribute the available computing resources among the various contributions.

Leading hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic moment from lattice QCD

We compute the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization (LO-HVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $(g_μ-2)$, using lattice QCD. Calculations are performed with four flavors of 4-stout-improved staggered quarks, at physical quark masses and at six values of the lattice spacing down to 0.064~fm. All strong isospin breaking and electromagnetic effects are accounted for to leading order. The infinite-volume limit is taken thanks to simulations performed in volumes of sizes up to 11~fm. Our result for the LO-HVP contribution to $(g_μ-2)$ has a total uncertainty of 0.8\%. Compared to the result of the dispersive approach for this contribution, ours significantly reduces the tension between the standard model prediction for $(g_μ-2)$ and its measurement.

The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon in the Standard Model

We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $α$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\mathcal{O}(α^5)$ with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by $(m_μ/M_W)^2$ and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at $\mathcal{O}(α^2)$ and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at $\mathcal{O}(α^3)$ the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads $a_μ^\text{SM}=116\,591\,810(43)\times 10^{-11}$ and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7$σ$. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future-which are also discussed here-make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics.

Lattice calculation of the hadronic leading order contribution to the muon $g-2$

The persistent discrepancy of about 3.5 standard deviations between the experimental measurement and the Standard Model prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ$, is one of the most promising hints for the possible existence of new physics. Here we report on our lattice QCD calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution $a_μ^{\rm hvp}$, based on gauge ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ flavours of O($a$) improved Wilson quarks. We address the conceptual and numerical challenges that one encounters along the way to a sub-percent determination of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution. The current status of lattice calculations of $a_μ^{\rm hvp}$ is presented by performing a detailed comparison with the results from other groups.

Hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moments of leptons from first principles

We compute the leading, strong-interaction contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, muon and tau using lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) simulations. Calculations include the effects of $u$, $d$, $s$ and $c$ quarks and are performed directly at the physical values of the quark masses and in volumes of linear extent larger than $6\,\mathrm{fm}$. All connected and disconnected Wick contractions are calculated. Continuum limits are carried out using six lattice spacings. We obtain $a_e^\mathrm{LO-HVP}=189.3(2.6)(5.6)\times 10^{-14}$, $a_μ^\mathrm{LO-HVP}=711.1(7.5)(17.4)\times 10^{-10}$ and $a_τ^\mathrm{LO-HVP}=341.0(0.8)(3.2)\times 10^{-8}$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Slope and curvature of the hadron vacuum polarization at vanishing virtuality from lattice QCD

We compute the slope and curvature, at vanishing four-momentum transfer squared, of the leading order hadron vacuum polarization function, using lattice QCD. Calculations are performed with 2+1+1 flavors of staggered fermions directly at the physical values of the quark masses and in volumes of linear extent larger than 6fm. The continuum limit is carried out using six different lattice spacings. All connected and disconnected contributions are calculated, up to and including those of the charm.

Current induced torques in structures with ultra-thin IrMn antiferromagnet

Relativistic current induced torques and devices utilizing antiferromagnets have been independently considered as two promising new directions in spintronics research. Here we report electrical measurements of the torques in structures comprising a $\sim1$~nm thick layer of an antiferromagnet IrMn. The reduced Néel temperature and the thickness comparable to the spin-diffusion length allow us to investigate the role of the antiferromagnetic order in the ultra-thin IrMn films in the observed torques. In a Ta/IrMn/CoFeB structure, IrMn in the high-temperature phase diminishes the torque in the CoFeB ferromagnet. At low temperatures, the antidamping torque in CoFeB flips sign as compared to the reference Ta/CoFeB structure, suggesting that IrMn in the antiferromagnetic phase governs the net torque acting on the ferromagnet. At low temperatures, current induced torque signatures are observed also in a Ta/IrMn structure comprising no ferromagnetic layer.

Chiral symmetry restoration in QCD with many flavours

We discuss the phases of QCD in the parameter space spanned by the number of light flavours and the temperature with respect to the realisation of chiral and conformal symmetries. The intriguing interplay of these symmetries is best studied by means of lattice simulations, and some selected results from our recent work are presented here.

One,Two,Zero: Scales of Strong Interactions

We discuss our results on QCD with a number of fundamental fermions ranging from zero to sixteen. These theories exhibit a wide array of fascinating phenomena which have been under close scrutiny, especially in recent years, first and foremost is the approach to conformality. To keep this review focused, we have chosen scale generation, or lack thereof as a guiding theme, however the discussion will be set in the general framework of the analysis of the phases and phase transitions of strong interactions at zero and nonzero temperature.

On the particle spectrum and the conformal window

We study the SU(3) gauge theory with twelve flavours of fermions in the fundamental representation as a prototype of non-Abelian gauge theories inside the conformal window. Guided by the pattern of underlying symmetries, chiral and conformal, we analyze the two-point functions theoretically and on the lattice, and determine the finite size scaling and the infinite volume fermion mass dependence of the would-be hadron masses. We show that the spectrum in the Coulomb phase of the system can be described in the context of a universal scaling analysis and we provide the nonperturbative determination of the fermion mass anomalous dimension gamma*=0.235(46) at the infrared fixed point. We comment on the agreement with the four-loop perturbative prediction for this quantity and we provide a unified description of all existing lattice results for the spectrum of this system, them being in the Coulomb phase or the asymptotically free phase. Our results corroborate the view that the fixed point we are studying is not associated to a physical singularity along the bare coupling line and estimates of physical observables can be attempted on either side of the fixed point. Finally, we observe the restoration of the U(1) axial symmetry in the two-point functions.

This note is based on our recent results on QCD with varying number of flavors of fundamental fermions. Topics include unusual, strong dynamics in the preconformal, confining phase, the physics of the conformal window and the role of ab-initio lattice simulations in establishing our current knowledge of the phases of many flavor QCD

CoFeB Thickness Dependence of Thermal Stability Factor in CoFeB/MgO Perpendicular Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

Thermal stability factor (delta) of recording layer was studied in perpendicular anisotropy CoFeB/MgO magnetic tunnel junctions (p-MTJs) with various CoFeB recording layer thicknesses and junction sizes. In all series of p-MTJs with different thicknesses, delta is virtually independent of the junction sizes of 48-81 nm in diameter. The values of delta increase linearly with increasing the recording layer thickness. The slope of the linear fit is explained well by a model based on nucleation type magnetization reversal.

QCD critical point in the strong coupling lattice QCD and during black hole formation

We discuss the QCD phase diagram from two different point of view. We first investigate the phase diagram structure in the strong coupling lattice QCD with Polyakov loop effects, and show that the the chiral and Z_{N_c} deconfinement transition boundaries deviate at finite mu as suggested from large N_c arguments. Next we discuss the possibility to probe the QCD critical point during prompt black hole formation processes. The thermodynamical evolution during the black hole formation would result in quark matter formation, and the critical point in isospin asymmetric matter may be swept. (T,mu_B) region probed in heavy-ion collisions and the black hole formation processes covers most of the critical point locations predicted in recent lattice Monte-Carlo simulations and chiral effective models.

MgO barrier-perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions with CoFe/Pd multilayers and ferromagnetic insertion layers

The authors studied an effect of ferromagnetic (Co20Fe60B20 or Fe) layer insertion on tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) properties of MgO-barrier magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with CoFe/Pd multilayer electrodes. TMR ratio in MTJs with CoFeB/MgO/Fe stack reached 67% at an-nealing temperature (Ta) of 200 degree C and then decreased rapidly at Ta over 250 degree C. The degradation of the TMR ratio may be related to crystallization of CoFe(B) into fcc(111) or bcc(011) texture result-ing from diffusion of B into Pd layers. MTJs which were in-situ annealed at 350oC just after depo-siting bottom CoFe/Pd multilayer showed TMR ratio of 78% by post annealing at Ta =200 degree C.

Brown-Rho Scaling in the Strong Coupling Lattice QCD

We examine the Brown-Rho scaling for meson masses in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD with one species of staggered fermion. Analytical expression of meson masses is derived at finite temperature and chemical potential. We find that meson masses are approximately proportional to the equilibrium value of the chiral condensate, which evolves as a function of temperature and chemical potential.

Strong coupling limit/region of lattice QCD

We study the phase diagram of quark matter and nuclear properties based on the strong coupling expansion of lattice QCD. Both of baryon and finite coupling correction are found to have effects to extend the hadron phase to a larger mu direction relative to Tc. In a chiral RMF model with logarithmic sigma potential derived in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD, we can avoid the chiral collapse and normal and hypernuclei properties are well described.

Phase diagram at finite temperature and quark density in the strong coupling region of lattice QCD for color SU(3)

We study the phase diagram of quark matter at finite temperature (T) and chemical potential (mu) in the strong coupling region of lattice QCD for color SU(3). Baryon has effects to extend the hadron phase to a larger mu direction relative to Tc at low temperatures in the strong coupling limit. With the 1/g^2 corrections, Tc is found to decrease rapidly as g decreases, and the shape of the phase diagram becomes closer to that expected in the real world.

Phase diagram at finite temperature and quark density in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD for color SU(3)

We study the phase diagram of quark matter at finite temperature (T) and finite chemical potential (mu) in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD for color SU(3). We derive an analytical expression of the effective free energy as a function of T and mu, including baryon effects. The finite temperature effects are evaluated by integrating over the temporal link variable exactly in the Polyakov gauge with anti-periodic boundary condition for fermions. The obtained phase diagram shows the first order phase transition at low temperatures and the second order phase transition at high temperatures separated by the tri-critical point in the chiral limit. Baryon has effects to reduce the effective free energy and to extend the hadron phase to a larger mu direction at low temperatures.
