On Quartet Superfluidity of Fermionic Atomic Gas

Possibility of a quartet superfluidity in fermionic systems is studied as a new aspect of atomic gas at ultra low temperatures. The four-fold degeneracy of hyperfine state and moderate coupling is indispensable for the quartet superfluidity to occur. Possible superconductivity with quartet condensation in electron systems is discussed.

Theory of Quasi-Universal Ratio of Seebeck Coefficient to Specific Heat in Zero-Temperature Limit in Correlated Metals

It is shown that the quasi-universal ratio $q=\lim_{T\to0}eS/C\sim\pm1$ of the Seebeck coefficient to the specific heat in the limit of T=0 observed in a series of strongly correlated metals can be understood on the basis of the Fermi liquid theory description. In deriving this result, it is crucial that a relevant scattering arises from impurities, but not from the mutual scattering of quasiparticles. The systematics of the sign of $q$ is shown to reflect the sign of the logarithmic derivative of the density of states and the inverse mass tensor of the quasiparticles, explaining the systematics of experiments. In particular, the positive sign of $q$ for Ce-based and $f^{3}$-based heavy fermions, and the negative sign for Yb-based and $f^{2}$-based heavy fermions, are explained. The case of non-Fermi liquid near the quantum critical point (QCP) is briefly mentioned, showing that the ratio $q$ decreases considerably toward antiferromagnetic QCP while it remains essentially unchanged for the ferromagnetic QCP or QCP due to a local criticality.

Deconstruction of the Kondo Effect near the AFM-Quantum Critical Point

The problem of a spin-1/2 magnetic impurity near an antiferromagnetic transition of the host lattice is solved. The problem is shown to transform to a multichannel problem. A variety of fixed points is discovered asymptotically near the AFM-critical point. Among these is a new variety of stable fixed point of a multichannel Kondo problem which does not require channel isotropy. At this point Kondo screening disappears but coupling to spin-fluctuations remains. Besides its intrinsic interest, the problem is an essential ingredient in the problem of quantum critical points in heavy-fermions.

Renormalization Group Technique Applied to the Pairing Interaction of the Quasi-One-Dimensional Superconductivity

A mechanism of the quasi-one-dimensional (q1d) superconductivity is investigated by applying the renormalization group techniques to the pairing interaction. With the obtained renormalized pairing interaction, the transition temperature Tc and corresponding gap function are calculated by solving the linearized gap equation. For reasonable sets of parameters, Tc of p-wave triplet pairing is higher than that of d-wave singlet pairing due to the one-dimensionality of interaction. These results can qualitatively explain the superconducting properties of q1d organic conductor (TMTSF)2PF6 and the ladder compound Sr2Ca12Cu24O41.

Effect of Joule heating in current-driven domain wall motion

It was found that high current density needed for the current-driven domain wall motion results in the Joule heating of the sample. The sample temperature, when the current-driven domain wall motion occurred, was estimated by measuring the sample resistance during the application of a pulsed-current. The sample temperature was 750 K for the threshold current density of 6.7 x 10^11 A/m2 in a 10 nm-thick Ni81Fe19 wire with a width of 240 nm. The temperature was raised to 830 K for the current density of 7.5 x 10^11 A/m2, which is very close to the Curie temperature of bulk Ni81Fe19. When the current density exceeded 7.5 x 10^11 A/m2, an appearance of a multi-domain structure in the wire was observed by magnetic force microscopy, suggesting that the sample temperature exceeded the Curie temperature.

Realization of odd-frequency p-wave spin-singlet superconductivity coexisting with antiferromagnetic order near quantum critical point

A possibility of the realization of the p-wave spin-singlet superconductivity ($p$SS), whose gap function is odd both in momentum and in frequency, is investigated by solving the gap equation with the phenomenological interaction mediated by the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation. The $p$SS is realized prevailing over the d-wave singlet superconductivity ($d$SS) in the vicinity of antiferromagnetic quantum critical pint (QCP) both on the paramagnetic and on the antiferromagnetic sides. Off the QCP in the paramagnetic phase, however, the $d$SS with line-nodes is realized as \textit{conventional} anisotropic superconductivity. For the present $p$SS state, there is no gap in the quasiparticle spectrum everywhere on the Fermi surface due to its odd frequency. These features can give a qualitative understanding of the anomalous behaviors of NQR relaxation rate on CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ or CeRhIn$_5$ where the antiferromagnetism and superconductivity coexist on a microscopic level.

Signatures of valence fluctuations in CeCu2Si2 under high pressure

Simultaneous resistivity and a.c.-specific heat measurements have been performed under pressure on single crystalline CeCu2Si2 to over 6 GPa in a hydrostatic helium pressure medium. A series of anomalies were observed around the pressure coinciding with a maximum in the superconducting critical temperature, $T_c^{max}$. These anomalies can be linked with an abrupt change of the Ce valence, and suggest a second quantum critical point at a pressure $P_v \simeq 4.5$ GPa, where critical valence fluctuations provide the superconducting pairing mechanism, as opposed to spin fluctuations at ambient pressure. Such a valence instability, and associated superconductivity, is predicted by an extended Anderson lattice model with Coulomb repulsion between the conduction and f-electrons. We explain the T-linear resistivity found at $P_v$ in this picture, while other anomalies found around $P_v$ can be qualitatively understood using the same model.

Polar type density of states in non-unitary odd-parity superconducting states of gap with point nodes

It is shown that the density of states (DOS) proportional to the excitation energy, the so-called polar like DOS, can arise in the odd-parity states with the superconducting gap vanishing at points even if the spin-orbit interaction for Cooper pairing is strong enough. Such gap stuructures are realized in the non-unitary states, F_{1u}(1,i,0), F_{1u}(1,varepsilon,varepsilon^{2}), and F_{2u}(1,i,0), classified by Volovik and Gorkov, Sov. Phys.-JETP Vol.61 (1985) 843. This is due to the fact that the gap vanishes in quadratic manner around the point on the Fermi surface. It is also shown that the region of quadratic energy dependence of DOS, in the state F_{2u}(1,varepsilon,varepsilon^{2}), is restricted in very small energy region making it difficult to distinguish from the polar-like DOS.

A theory of new type of heavy-electron superconductivity in PrOs_4Sb_12: quadrupolar-fluctuation mediated odd-parity pairings

It is shown that unconventional nature of superconducting state of PrOs_4Sb_12, a Pr-based heavy electron compound with the filled-Skutterudite structure, can be explained in a unified way by taking into account the structure of the crystalline-electric-field (CEF) level, the shape of the Fermi surface determined by the band structure calculation, and a picture of the quasiparticles in f$^{2}$-configuration with magnetically singlet CEF ground state. Possible types of pairing are narrowed down by consulting recent experimental results. In particular, the chiral "p"-wave states such as p_x+ip_y is favoured under the magnetic field due to the orbital Zeeman effect, while the "p"-wave states with two-fold symmetery such as p_x can be stabilized by a feedback effect without the magnetic field. It is also discussed that the double superconducting transition without the magnetic field is possible due to the spin-orbit coupling of the "triplet" Cooper pairs in the chiral state.

Singular Effects of Impurities near the Ferromagnetic Quantum-Critical Point

Systematic theoretical results for the effects of a dilute concentration of magnetic impurities on the thermodynamic and transport properties in the region around the quantum critical point of a ferromagnetic transition are obtained. In the quasi-classical regime, the dynamical spin fluctuations enhance the Kondo temperature. This energy scale decreases rapidly in the quantum fluctuation regime, where the properties are those of a line of critical points of the multichannel Kondo problem with the number of channels increasing as the critical point is approached, except at unattainably low temperatures where a single channel wins out.

Enhanced Valence Fluctuations Caused by f-c Coulomb Interaction in Ce-Based Heavy Electrons: Possible Origin of Pressure-Induced Enhancement of Superconducting Transition Temperature in \Ge and Related Compounds

Properties of an extended periodic Anderson model with the f-c Coulomb interaction $\Ufc$ is studied as a model for \Ge and related compounds which is cosidered to exhibit a sharp valence change under pressure. The problem is treated by extending the {\it slave-boson} and large-N expansion method to treat the present system. It is shown that, as the f-level $ε_{\rm f}$ is increased relative to the Fermi level, the sharp valence change is caused by the effect of $\Ufc$ with moderate strength of the order of the bandwith of conduction electrons. The superconducting transition temperature $T_\rc$ due to the valence-fluctuation exchange is estimated on the slave-boson fluctuation approximation. In the model with spherical Fermi surface, $T_\rc$ exhibits sharp peak as a function of $ε_{\rm f}$, simulating the effect of pressure, for the d-wave pairing channel.

Formation of heavy quasiparticle state in two-band Hubbard model

A realization of heavy fermion state is investigated on the basis of two-band Hubbard model. By means of the slave-boson mean-field approximation, it is shown that for the intermediate electron density, n_e=1.5, the inter-band Coulomb repulsion U strongly emphasizes initially small difference between bands, and easily stabilizes integral valence in the lower band. As a result, a strong renormalization takes place in the lower band and the mixing strength between two bands. It gives rise to a sharp peak at the Fermi level in the quasiparticle density of states, as that obtained in the periodic Anderson model. In contrast to a simple insight that the Hund's-rule coupling J reduces the characteristic energy, it turns out to be almost irrelevant to the renormalization for J<U. The required conditions are suitable for LiV_2O_4, the first observed heavy fermion compound in transition metal oxide.

Deformation of Fermi Surface Due to Antiferromagnetic Correlation

It is investigated, on the basis of the fluctuation exchange approximation, how the shape of the Fermi surface is modified in two-dimensional $t-t'-U$ Hubbard model at half filling as strength of the onsite Coulomb interaction $U$ is increased. The antiferromagnetic (AF) correlation length is shown to be enhanced as the Coulomb interaction get closer to the critical value $U_{\rm c}$ for the onset AF order. At the same time, the shape of the renormalized Fermi surface is deformed showing the tendency of nesting near $U_{\rm c}$.

Numerical Renormalization-Group Study of Particle-Hole Symmetry Breaking in Two-Channel Kondo Problem : Effect of Repulsion between Conduction Electrons and Potential Scattering

Particle-hole symmetry breaking perturbation in two-channel pseudospin Kondo problem is studied by the numerical renormalization-group method. It is shown that the repulsion between conduction electrons at the impurity site and the single particle potential are the relevant perturbations against the conventional non-Fermi liquid fixed point. Although the repulsion (potential) with realistic strength prevents the overscreening of pseudospin, it induces in turn a {\it real spin}, which is also overscreened again. Thus the {\it real spin} susceptibility becomes anomalous contrary to the conventional two-channel Kondo problem.
