Effect of partial substitution of iso-valent Mo at Cr-site on electronic structure and physical properties of Fe2CrAl

Heusler alloy Fe2CrAl exhibits a ferromagnetic behaviour below Curie temperature (TC) ~ 202 K along with presence of cluster glass (CG) phase near freezing temperature (Tf) ~ 3.9 K and Griffiths phase (GP) above 300 K. The physical properties of this alloy are very sensitive to substitutions and anti-site disorder. Here, we investigate the effect of partial substitution of Mo at Cr-site on physical properties of Fe2CrAl. Structural and morphological analysis confirms the single cubic structure of the substituted alloys. Increment in Mo concentration shifts the TC towards lower temperature, which is ascribed to the effect of increased hybridization strength between 3d-4d states of Fe/Cr/Mo. Additionally, systematic analysis of AC susceptibility, magnetic memory effect and time dependent magnetization studies confirm the presence of CG-like phase near (Tf) ~ 3.5 K in Fe2Cr0.95Mo0.05Al. Such feature gets suppressed towards lower temperature with an increase of Mo concentration, i.e. below 1.8 K in Fe2Cr0.85Mo0.15Al. The origin of the glassy signature is ascribed to the decrement in magnetic anisotropy with Mo concentration. A partial increment in magnetic entropy change is also noted near TC with the increase in Mo substitution. Interestingly, at high temperatures (above 350 K), GP phase persists in both the alloys due to the presence of anti-site disorder.

Large magnetodielectric coupling in the vicinity of metamagnetic transition in $6H-$perovskite Ba$_3$GdRu$_2$O$_9$

The 6H-perovskites Ba$_3$RRu$_2$O$_9$ (R = rare earth element) demonstrate the magnetodielectric (MD) coupling as a manifestation of $4d - 4f$ magnetic interactions. Here, we have reported a detailed study of the structural, magnetic, heat capacity, and MD properties of the 6H-perovskite Ba$_3$GdRu$_2$O$_9$. The signature of long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering $\sim$ 14.8 K ($T_N$) is evident from the magnetization and heat capacity studies. The $T_N$ shifts towards the lower temperature side, apart from splitting in two with the application of the magnetic field. Field-dependent magnetization at 1.8 K shows three metamagnetic transitions with the opening of small hysteresis in different regions. A new transition at $T_1$ emerges after the onset of the first metamagnetic transition. Complex magnetic behavior is observed in different magnetic field regions whereas these field regions themselves vary with the temperature. Dielectric response recorded at zero and 80 kOe field exhibits the development of MD coupling well above $T_N$. The MD coupling ($\sim$ 4.5 \% at 10 K) is enhanced by 25 \% as compared to the Dy counterpart. Effect of complex magnetic behavior is also conveyed in the MD results where the maximum value of MD coupling is observed in the vicinity of 10 K (onset of $T_1$) and near the second metamagnetic transition. Our investigation suggests that both Gd and Ru moments align simultaneously at $T_N$. Short-range magnetic correlations are possibly responsible for MD coupling above $T_N$.

Quantum phases in f-Electron Systems

Quantum fluctuations and related phase transitions are of current interest from the viewpoint of fundamental physics and technological applications. Quantum phase implies a region where the quantum fluctuations of energy scale $\hbarω$ dominates over the thermal energy $k_B$T. Presence of quantum phase leads to unconventional and unexpected physical phenomena like Kondo effect, non-Fermi liquids, ordered magnetic state, and Fermi liquids, etc. In this framework, Ce-based metallic compounds, exhibiting correlated electron phenomena, emerged as prototypical systems to study the various quantum phases. In these systems considerable efforts have been made, both experimentally and theoretically, to overcome the problems related to the comprehensive understanding of correlated quantum phases. In this article, various aspects related to quantum phases in CeNiGe2, CeGe and CeAlGe are summarized, mainly focusing on the structural and physical properties.

Optical phonon modes assisted thermal conductivity in p-type ZrIrSb Half-Heusler alloy: A combined experimental and computational study

Half Heusler (HH) alloys with 18 valence electron count have attracted significant interest in the area of research related to thermoelectrics. Understanding the novel transport properties exhibited by these systems with semiconducting ground state is an important focus area in this field. Large thermal conductivity shown by most of the HH alloy possesses a major hurdle in improving the figure of merit (ZT). Additionally, understanding the mechanism of thermal conduction in heavy constituents HH alloys is an interesting aspect. Here, we have investigated the high temperature thermoelectric properties of ZrIrSb through experimental studies, phonon dispersion and electronic band structure calculations. ZrIrSb is found to exhibit substantially lower magnitude of resistivity and Seebeck coefficient near room temperature, owing to existence of anti-site disorder between Ir/Sb and vacant sites. Interestingly, in ZrIrSb, lattice thermal conductivity is governed by coupling between the acoustic and low frequency optical phonon modes, which originates due to heavier Ir/Sb atoms. This coupling leads to an enhancement in the Umklapp processes due to the optical phonon excitations near zone boundary, resulting in a lower magnitude of \k{appa}L. Our studies point to the fact that the simultaneous existence of two heavy mass elements within a simple unit cell can substantially decrease the lattice degrees of freedom.

Unravelling the phonon scattering mechanism in Half-Heusler alloys ZrCo1-xIrxSb (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.25)

Insight about the scattering mechanisms responsible for reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity (\k{appa}L) in Half-Heusler alloys (HHA) is imperative. In this context, we have thoroughly investigated the temperature response of thermal conductivity of ZrCo1-xIrxSb (x = 0, 0.1 and 0.25). For ZrCoSb, \k{appa}L is found to be ~15.13 W/m-K at 300 K, which is drastically reduced to ~4.37 W/m-K in ZrCo0.9Ir0.1Sb. This observed reduction is ascribed to softening of acoustic phonon modes and point defect scattering, on substitution of heavier mass. However, no further reduction in \k{appa}L is observed in ZrCo0.75Ir0.25Sb, because of identical scattering parameter. This has been elucidated based on the Klemens Callaway model. Also, in the parent alloy, phonon-phonon scattering mechanism plays a significant role in heat conduction process, whereas in Ir substituted alloys, point defect scattering (below 500 K) and phonon-phonon scattering (above 750 K) are the dominant scattering mechanisms. The minimum \k{appa}L is found to be ~1.73 W/m-K (at 950 K) in ZrCo0.9Ir0.1Sb, which is the lowest reported value till now, for n-type Zr based HHA. Our studies indicate that partial substitution of heavier mass element Ir at Co-site effectively reduces the \k{appa}L of n-type ZrCoSb, without modifying the nature of charge carriers.

Spontaneous Formation of Star-Shaped Surface Patterns in a Driven Bose-Einstein Condensate

We observe experimentally the spontaneous formation of star-shaped surface patterns in driven Bose-Einstein condensates. Two-dimensional star-shaped patterns with $l$-fold symmetry, ranging from quadrupole ($l=2$) to heptagon modes ($l=7$), are parametrically excited by modulating the scattering length near the Feshbach resonance. An effective Mathieu equation and Floquet analysis are utilized, relating the instability conditions to the dispersion of the surface modes in a trapped superfluid. Identifying the resonant frequencies of the patterns, we precisely measure the dispersion relation of the collective excitations. The oscillation amplitude of the surface excitations increases exponentially during the modulation. We find that only the $l=6$ mode is unstable due to its emergent coupling with the dipole motion of the cloud. Our experimental results are in excellent agreement with the mean-field framework. Our work opens a new pathway for generating higher-lying collective excitations with applications, such as the probing of exotic properties of quantum fluids and providing a generation mechanism of quantum turbulence.

Anomalous dependence of thermoelectric parameters on carrier concentration and electronic structure in Mn-substituted Fe2CrAl Heusler alloy

We investigate the high temperature thermoelectric properties of Heusler alloys Fe2-xMnxCrAl (0<x<1). Substitution of 12.5% Mn at Fe-site (x = 0.25) causes a significant increase in high temperature resistivity (\r{ho}) and an enhancement in the Seebeck coefficient (S), as compared to the parent alloy. However, as the concentration of Mn is increased above 0.25, a systematic decrement in the magnitude of both parameters is noted. These observations have been ascribed (from theoretical analysis) to a change in band gap and electronic structure of Fe2CrAl with Mn-substitution. Due to absence of mass fluctuations and lattice strain, no significant change in thermal conductivity is seen across this series of Heusler alloys. Additionally, S drastically changes its magnitude along with a crossover from negative to positive above 900 K, which has been ascribed to the dominance of holes over electrons in high temperature regime. In this series of alloys, S and \r{ho} shows a strong dependence on the carrier concentration and strength of d-d hybridization between Fe/Mn and Cr atoms.

Unconventional critical behaviour in weak ferromagnets Fe2-xMnxCrAl (0<x<1)

Recent studies on weak ferromagnets Fe2-xMnxCrAl (0<x<1) reveal the presence of cluster glass (CG) and Griffiths phase (GP) below and above the ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC) [(2019) Sci. Rep. 9 15888]. In this work, the influence of these inhomogeneous phases on the critical behaviour (around TC) of the above-mentioned series of alloys has been investigated in detail. For the parent alloy Fe2CrAl, γ is estimated as ~ 1.34, which lies near to ordered 3D Heisenberg model, whereas obtained value of β ~ 0.273 does not belong to any universality class. With increment in Mn concentration, both exponents γ and \b{eta} increases, where γ and β approaches disordered 3D Heisenberg model and ordered 3D Heisenberg model, respectively. The observed deviation in γ and unconventional value of δ can be ascribed to the increment in GP with Mn-concentration. The trend noted for β can be attributed to the increment in CG regime with an increase in Mn-content. The self-consistency and reliability of the estimated exponents are verified by the Widom scaling relation and scaling equations of state. Our studies indicate that the critical phenomenon of Fe2-xMnxCrAl (0<x<1) alloys possibly belong to a separate class and is not described within the framework of any existing universal model.

Coexistance of non-Fermi liquid behavior and bi-quadratic exchange coupling in La-substituted CeGe: Non-linear susceptibility and DFT + DMFT study

Studies connected with the investigations of non-Fermi liquid (NFL) systems continue to attract interest in condensed matter physics community. Understanding the anomalous physical properties exhibited by such systems and its related electronic structures is one of the central research topics in this area. In this context, Ce-based and Ce-site diluted (with non-magnetic ions) compounds provide a fertile playground. Here, we present a detailed study of non-linear DC susceptibility and combined density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) on Ce0.24La0.76Ge. Theoretical investigation of 4f partial density of states, local susceptibility and self-energy demonstrates the presence of NFL behavior which is associated with fluctuating local moments. Non-linear DC susceptibility studies on this compound reveal that the transition from NFL state to the new phase is due to development of the bi-quadratic exchange coupling and it obeys the non-linear susceptibility scaling. Under the application of magnetic fields, local moments interact spatially through conduction electrons resulting in magnetic fluctuations. Our studies point to the fact that the origin of the observed bi-quadratic exchange coupling is due to the spatial magnetic fluctuations.

Induced interactions and quench dynamics of bosonic impurities immersed in a Fermi sea

We unravel the ground state properties and the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of two bosonic impurities immersed in an one-dimensional fermionic environment by applying a quench of the impurity-medium interaction strength. In the ground state, the impurities and the Fermi sea are phase-separated for strong impurity-medium repulsions while they experience a localization tendency around the trap center for large attractions. We demonstrate the presence of attractive induced interactions mediated by the host for impurity-medium couplings of either sign and analyze the competition between induced and direct interactions. Following a quench to repulsive interactions triggers a breathing motion in both components, with an interaction dependent frequency and amplitude for the impurities, and a dynamical phase-separation between the impurities and their surrounding for strong repulsions. For attractive post-quench couplings a beating pattern owing its existence to the dominant role of induced interactions takes place with both components showing a localization trend around the trap center. In both quench scenarios, attractive induced correlations are manifested between non-interacting impurities and are found to dominate the direct ones only for quenches to attractive couplings.

Observation and Analysis of Multiple Dark-Antidark Solitons in Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

We report on the static and dynamical properties of multiple dark-antidark solitons (DADs) in two-component, repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. Motivated by experimental observations involving multiple DADs, we present a theoretical study which showcases that bound states consisting of dark (antidark) solitons in the first (second) component of the mixture exist for different values of interspecies interactions. It is found that ensembles of few DADs may exist as stable configurations, while for larger DAD arrays, the relevant windows of stability with respect to the interspecies interaction strength become progressively narrower. Moreover, the dynamical formation of states consisting of alternating DADs in the two components of the mixture is monitored. A complex dynamical evolution of these states is observed, leading either to sorted DADs or to beating dark-dark solitons depending on the strength of the interspecies coupling. This study demonstrates clear avenues for future investigations of DAD configurations.

Magnetocaloric effect and spin-phonon correlations in RFe0.5Cr0.5O3 (R = Er and Yb) compounds

We report the results of our investigation of the physical properties of mixed metal oxides RFe0.5Cr0.5O3 (R = Er and Yb). ErFe0.5Cr0.5O3 undergoes an antiferromagnetic ordering around 270 K followed by spin reorientation (SR) transitions around 150 and 8 K respectively. In contrast, in YbFe0.5Cr0.5O3 a single SR transition is noted at 36 K, below the AFM ordering temperature of 280 K. In ErFe0.5Cr0.5O3, a significant value of magnetic entropy change (ΔSM) ~ -12.4 J/kg-K is noted near the 2nd SR transition, however, this value is suppressed in YbFe0.5Cr0.5O3. Temperature dependent dielectric permittivity of ErFe0.5Cr0.5O3 and YbFe0.5Cr0.5O3 at different frequencies, reveal the presence of Debye-like relaxation behaviour in both compounds, which can be due to the effect of charge carrier hopping between localized states of Fe and Cr ions. Temperature dependent Raman scattering studies divulge that spin-phonon coupling plays a crucial role in defining the physical properties of these compounds.

Spin-lattice relaxation phenomena in the magnetic state of a suggested Weyl semimetal CeAlGe

In this work we report the results of DC susceptibility, AC susceptibility and related technique, resistivity, transverse and longitudinal magnetoresistance and heat capacity on polycrystalline magnetic semimetal CeAlGe. This compound undergoes antiferromagnetic type ordering around 5.2 K (T1). Under application of external magnetic fields, parallel alignment of magnetic moments is favored, above 0.5 Tesla. At low field and temperature, frequency and AC field amplitude response of AC susceptibility indicate to the presence of spin-lattice relaxation phenomena. The observation of spin-lattice interaction suggests to the presence of Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction which is associated with inversion and time reversal symmetry breaking. Additionally, presence of negative and asymmetric longitudinal magnetoresistance indicates anomalous velocity contribution to the magnetoresistance due to Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction which is further studied by heat capacity.

Parametrically excited star-shaped patterns at the interface of binary Bose-Einstein condensates

A Faraday-wave-like parametric instability is investigated via mean-field and Floquet analysis in immiscible binary Bose-Einstein condensates. The condensates form a so-called \textit{ball-shell} structure in a two-dimensional harmonic trap. To trigger the dynamics, the scattering length of the core condensate is periodically modulated in time. We reveal that in the dynamics the interface becomes unstable towards the formation of oscillating patterns. The interface oscillates sub-harmonically exhibiting an $m$-fold rotational symmetry that can be controlled by maneuvering the amplitude and the frequency of the modulation. Using Floquet analysis we are able to predict the generated interfacial tension of the mixture and derive a dispersion relation for the natural frequencies of the emergent patterns. A heteronuclear system composed of $^{87}$Rb-$^{85}$Rb atoms can be used for the experimental realization of the phenomenon, yet our results are independent of the specifics of the employed atomic species {and of the parameter at which the driving is applied.

Quench induced vortex-bright-soliton formation in binary Bose-Einstein condensates

We unravel the spontaneous generation of vortex-bright-soliton structures in binary Bose-Einstein condensates with a small mass imbalance between the species confined in a two-dimensional harmonic trap where one of the two species has been segmented into two parts by a potential barrier. To trigger the dynamics the potential barrier is suddenly removed and subsequently the segments perform a counterflow dynamics. We consider a relative phase difference of $π$ between the segments, while a singly quantized vortex may be imprinted at the center of the other species. The number of vortex structures developed within the segmented species following the merging of its segments is found to depend on the presence of an initial vortex on the other species. In particular, a $π$ phase difference in the segmented species and a vortex in the other species result in a single vortex-bright-soliton structure. However, when the non-segmented species does not contain a vortex the counterflow dynamics of the segmented species gives rise to a vortex dipole in it accompanied by two bright solitary waves arising in the non-segmented species. Turning to strongly mass imbalanced mixtures, with a heavier segmented species, we find that the same overall dynamics takes place, while the quench-induced nonlinear excitations become more robust. Inspecting the dynamics of the angular momentum we show that it can be transferred from one species to the other, and its transfer rate can be tuned by the strength of the interspecies interactions and the mass of the atomic species.

Pulse and continuously driven many-body quantum dynamics of bosonic impurities in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We unravel the periodically driven dynamics of two repulsively interacting bosonic impurities within a bosonic bath upon considering either the impact of a finite pulse or a continuous shaking of the impurities harmonic trap. Following a pulse driving of initially miscible components we reveal a variety of dynamical response regimes depending on the driving frequency. At resonant drivings the impurities decouple from their host while if exposed to a high frequency driving they remain trapped in the bosonic gas. For continuous shaking we showcase that in the resonantly driven regime the impurities oscillate back and forth within and outside the bosonic medium. In all cases, the bosonic bath is perturbed performing a collective dipole motion. Referring to an immiscible initial state we unveil that for moderate driving frequencies the impurities feature a dispersive behavior whilst for a high frequency driving they oscillate around the edges of the Thomas-Fermi background. Energy transfer processes from the impurities to their environment are encountered, especially for large driving frequencies. Additionally, coherence losses develop in the course of the evolution with the impurities predominantly moving as a pair.

Exotic magnetic behaviour and evidence of cluster glass and Griffiths like phase in Heusler alloys Fe2-xMnxCrAl

We present a detailed study of structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a series of Heusler alloys Fe2-xMnxCrAl (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1). Structural investigation of this series is carried out using high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Results suggest that with increasing Mn concentration, the L21 structure of Fe2CrAl is destabilized. The DC magnetization results show a decrement in paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition temperature (TC) with increasing Mn concentration. From the systematic analysis of magnetic memory effect, heat capacity, time dependent magnetization, and DC field dependent AC susceptibility studies it is observed that, Fe2CrAl exhibits cluster glass(CG)-like transition approximately at 3.9 K (Tf2). The alloys, Fe1.75Mn0.25CrAl and Fe1.5Mn0.5CrAl exhibit double CG-like transitions near Tf1~22 K, Tf2~4.2 K and Tf1~30.4 K, Tf2~9.5 K respectively, however, in Fe1.25Mn0.75CrAl, a single CG-like transition is noted at Tf2~11.5 K below TC. Interestingly, FeMnCrAl shows the absence of long ranged magnetic ordering and this alloy undergoes three CG-like transitions at ~ 22 K (Tf*), 16.6 K (Tf1) and 11 K (Tf2). At high temperatures, a detailed analysis of temperature response of inverse DC susceptibility clearly reveals the observation of Griffiths phase (GP) above 300 K (T*) in Fe2CrAl and this phase persists with Mn concentration with a decrement in T*.

Effect of (Cu/Fe)O5 bipyramid size and separation on magnetic and dielectric properties of rare earth layered perovskite LaBaCuFeO5 and LuBaCuFeO5

We report structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of layered perovskite materials LnBaCuFeO5 (Ln = La and Lu). LaBaCuFeO5 shows magnetic cluster glass behavior below 60 K owing to the competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. Glassy dynamics of electric dipoles has also been observed in the vicinity of the magnetic glass transition temperature. The presence of significant coupling between spin and polar degrees of freedom results in the multiglass feature in LaBaCuFeO5. The LuBaCuFeO5 compound undergoes YBaCuFeO5 like commensurate to incommensurate antiferromagnetic transition at 175 K. Large magnetic irreversibility below 17 K in this compound suggests the presence of strong spin anisotropy. In addition, in this compound the interaction between the dipoles is not strong enough, which results in the absence of glassy dynamics of electric dipoles. The contrasting behavior of two compounds is possibly due to variation in the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions along c-axis, which is the manifestation of structural modification arising out of the difference in the ionic radii of La and Lu.
