XRISM/Resolve reveals the complex iron structure of NGC 7213: Evidence for radial stratification between inner disk and broad-line region

We present the first high-resolution X-ray spectrum of NGC 7213 obtained with XRISM/Resolve, supported by simultaneous XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and SOAR optical data. The XRISM spectrum resolves the neutral Fe\,K$\alpha$ into two components: a narrow core ($\rm FWHM = 650_{-220}^{+240}\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$) consistent with emission at the dust sublimation radius, and a broader, asymmetric line best described by disk-like emission from $\sim 100\,\rm R_{g}$. This disk component mirrors the profile of the double-peaked H$\alpha$ line observed in the optical. In addition, we detect broadened Fe XXV and Fe XXVI emission lines whose inferred locations bridge the gap between the inner disk and the optical broad-line region. The weak narrow Fe K$\alpha$ equivalent width ($\rm EW = 32 \pm 6\,eV$) and absence of a Compton hump imply a low-covering-fraction, Compton-thin torus. Together, these results reveal a radially stratified structure in NGC 7213, spanning nearly four orders of magnitude in radius, and place the source in an intermediate accretion state ($\rm \lambda_{Edd} = 0.001-0.01$) where the inner disk and BLR remain, while the torus shows signs of dissipation.

Finite element method modeling of expansion of irradiated rocks: focusing on the minerals

Finite element method (FEM) modeling of the volumetric expansion phenomenon associated with the accumulation of irradiation was performed on rocks in a concrete for nuclear power plant. The FEM mesh of sandstone, tuff, and granite was created based on microscopic images, and the volumetric expansion due to irradiation was calculated. The saturated value of the volume expansion due to irradiation accumulation was calculated, and it was shown that the saturated value of the volume expansion was well explained by the experimental value. In addition, the FEM analysis indicates that irradiation-induced degradation of rock propagates through a localized concentration of stress followed by fracture with cracks spreading throughout the rock.

Measurements of total and partial charge-changing cross sections for 200-400 MeV/nucleon 12C in water and polycarbonate

We have studied charged nuclear fragments produced by 200 - 400 MeV/nucleon carbon ions, interacting with water and polycarbonate, using a newly developed emulsion detector. Total and partial charge-changing cross sections for the production of B, Be, and Li fragments were measured and compared with both previously published measurements, and model predictions. This study is of importance for validating and improving carbon ion therapy treatment planning systems, and for estimating the radiological risks for personnel on space missions, since carbon is a significant component of the Galactic Cosmic Rays.

Matrix Quantum Mechanics for Supermembrane on AdS_{7} x S^{4}

We explore the light-cone gauge formulation of a closed supermembrane on AdS_{7} x S^{4}. We obtain the action of matrix quantum mechanics with large N U(N) gauge symmetry for the light-cone supermembrane. We show that this action reproduces leading order terms in α'-expansion of the non-abelian Born-Infeld action of N D0-branes propagating near the horizon of D4-branes. The matrix quantum mechanics obtained in this paper, therefore, has an interpretation as Matrix theory in the near-horizon of D4-branes.

Development of an Interface for Using EGS4 Physics Processes in Geant4

As simulation system, the variety of physics processes implemented is one of the most important functionalities. In that sense, Geant4 is one of the most powerful simulation toolkits. Its flexibility and expansibility brought by object-oriented approach make it possible for us to easily assimilate external simulation packages into the Geant4 system as modules of physics processes. We developed an interface for using EGS4, which is another of the most well-known simulation package for electromagnetic physics, in Geant4. By means of this interface, EGS4 users can share Geant4 powerful resources, such as geometry, tracking, etc. It is also important that it can provide a common environment for comparison tests between EGS4 and Geant4. In this paper, we describe our design and implementation of the interface.

Solar Neutron Event in Association with a Large Solar Flare on November 24, 2000

Solar neutrons have been detected using the neutron monitor located at Mt. Chacaltaya, Bolivia, in association with a large solar flare on November 24, 2000. This is the first detection of solar neutrons by the neutron monitor that have been reported so far in solar cycle 23. The statistical significance of the detection is 5.5 sigma. In this flare, the intense emission of hard X-rays and gamma-rays has been observed by the Yohkoh Hard X-ray Telescope (HXT) and Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS), respectively. The production time of solar neutrons is better correlated with those of hard X-rays and gamma-rays than with the production time of soft X-rays. The observations of the solar neutrons on the ground have been limited to solar flares with soft X-ray class greater than X8 in former solar cycles. In this cycle, however, neutrons were detected associated with an X2.3 solar flare on November 24, 2000. This is the first report of the detection of solar neutrons on the ground associated with a solar flare with its X-ray class smaller than X8.

Open Wilson Lines as States of Closed String

System of a D-brane in bosonic string theory on a constant $B$ field background is studied in order to obtain further insight into the bulk-boundary duality. Boundary states which describe arbitrary numbers of open-string tachyons and gluons are given. UV behaviors of field theories on the non-commutative world-volume are investigated by using these states. We take zero-slope limits of generating functions of one-loop amplitudes of gluons (and open-string tachyons) in which the region of the small open-string proper time is magnified. Existence of $B$ field allows the limits to be slightly different from the standard field theory limits of closed-string. They enable us to capture world-volume theories at a trans-string scale. In this limit the generating functions are shown to be factorized by two curved open Wilson lines (and their analogues) and become integrals on the space of paths with a Gaussian distribution around straight lines. These indicate a possibility that field theories on the non-commutative world-volume are topological at such a trans-string scale. We also give a proof of the Dhar-Kitazawa conjecture by making an explicit correspondence between the closed-string states and the paths. Momentum eigenstates of closed-string or momentum loops also play an important role in these analyses.

p-p' System with B Field and Projection Operator Noncommutative Solitons

We study the system of the Dp'-brane with Dp-brane (p<p') inside, in the case where B_{ij} field is a nonvanishing constant. In order to understand how the Dp-brane is viewed from the Dp'-brane worldvolume theory, we investigate the process in which the Dp-brane is probed with p'-p' open string. We calculate the scattering amplitudes among p-p' open strings and p'-p' open strings and show that not only the Weyl transform of the projection operator onto the ground state but also those onto higher excited states emerge as multiplicative factors of the amplitudes.

Correspondence between Noncommutative Soliton and Open String/D-brane System via Gaussian Damping Factor

The gaussian damping factor (g.d.f.) and the new interaction vertex with the symplectic tensor are the characteristic properties of the N-point scalar-vector scattering amplitudes of the p-p' (p < p') open string system which realizes noncommutative geometry. The g.d.f. is here interpreted as a form factor of the Dp-brane by noncommutative U(1) current. Observing that the g.d.f. is in fact equal to the Fourier transform of the noncommutative projector soliton introduced by Gopakumar, Minwalla and Strominger, we further identify the Dp-brane in the zero slope limit with the noncommutative soliton state. It is shown that the g.d.f. depends only on the total momentum of N-2 incoming/outgoing photons in the zero slope limit. In the description of the low-energy effective action (LEEA) proposed before, this is shown to follow from the delta function propagator and the form of the initial/final wave functions in the soliton sector which resides in x^{m} m= p+1, ...p' dependent part of the scalar field Φ(x^μ, x^m). The three and four point amplitudes computed from LEEA agree with string calculation. We discuss related issues which are resummation/lifting of infinite degeneracy and conservation of momentum transverse to the Dp-brane.

Worldsheet and Spacetime Properties of p-p' System with B Field and Noncommutative Geometry

We study worldsheet and spacetime properties of the p-p' (p < p') open string system with constant B_{ij} field viewed from the Dp' brane. The description of this system in terms of the CFT with spin and twist fields leads us to consider the renormal ordering procedure from the SL(2,R) invariant vacuum to the oscillator vacuum. We compute the attendant two distinct superspace two-point functions as well as their difference (the subtracted two-point function). These bring us an integral (Koba-Nielsen) representation for the multiparticle tree scattering amplitudes consisting of N-2 vectors and two tachyons. We evaluate them explicitly for the N=3,4 cases. Several novel features are observed which include a momentum dependent multiplicative factor to each external vector leg and the emergence of a symplectic tensor multiplying the polarization vectors. In the zero slope limit, the principal parts of the amplitudes translate into a noncommutative field theory in p'+1 dimensions in which a scalar field decaying exponentially in (p'-p) dimensions and a noncommutative U(1) gauge field interact via the minimal coupling and a new interaction. A large number of nearly massless states noted before are shown to propagate in the t-channel.

Small-scale anisotropy of cosmic rays above 10^19eV observed with the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array

With the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array (AGASA), 581 cosmic rays above 10^19eV, 47 above 4 x 10^19eV, and 7 above 10^20eV are observed until August 1998. Arrival direction distribution of these extremely high energy cosmic rays has been studied. While no significant large-scale anisotropy is found on the celestial sphere, some interesting clusters of cosmic rays are observed. Above 4 x 10^19eV, there are one triplet and three doublets within separation angle of 2.5^o and the probability of observing these clusters by a chance coincidence under an isotropic distribution is smaller than 1 %. Especially the triplet is observed against expected 0.05 events. The cos(θ_GC) distribution expected from the Dark Matter Halo model fits the data as well as an isotropic distribution above 2 x 10^19eV and 4 x 10^19eV, but is a poorer fit than isotropy above 10^19eV. Arrival direction distribution of seven 10^20eV cosmic rays is consistent with that of lower energy cosmic rays and is uniform. Three of seven are members of doublets above about 4 x 10^19eV.

p-p' System with B-field, Branes at Angles and Noncommutative Geometry

We study the generic $p-p^\prime$ system in the presence of constant NS 2-form $B_{ij}$ field. We derive properties concerning with the noncommutativity of D-brane worldvolume, the Green functions and the spectrum of this system. In the zero slope limit, a large number of light states appear as the lowest excitations in appropriate cases. We are able to relate the energies of the lowest states after the GSO projection with the configurations of branes at angles. Through analytic continuation, the system is compared with the branes with relative motion.

Experimental search for the decay mode K_L -> pi^0 gamma e^+ e^-

We report on results of a search for the decay mode K_L -> pi^0 gamma e^+ e^- conducted by the E162 experiment at KEK. We observed no events and set a 90% confidence level upper limit of Br(K_L -> pi^0 gamma e^+ e^-)< 7.1x10^{-7} for its branching ratio. This is the first published experimental result on this decay mode.

The Anisotropy of Cosmic Ray Arrival Directions around 10$^{18}$eV

Anisotropy in the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energies above 10$^{17}$eV is studied using data from the Akeno 20 km$^2$ array and the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array (AGASA), using a total of about 117,000 showers observed during 11 years. In the first harmonic analysis, we have found strong anisotropy of $\sim$ 4% around 10$^{18}$eV, corresponding to a chance probability of 0.2%. With two dimensional analysis in right ascension and declination, this anisotropy is interpreted as an excess of showers near the directions of the Galactic Center and the Cygnus region.

A handy method to monitor outputs from a pulsed light source and its application to photomultiplier's rate effect studies

In order to study photomultiplier's short-term gain stability at high counting rate, we constructed an LED pulsed light source and its output monitor system. For the monitor system, we employed a photon counting method using a photomultiplier as a monitor photon detector. It is found that the method offers a simple way to monitor outputs from a pulsed light source and that, together with an LED light source, it provides a handy way to investigate photomultiplier's rate effects.

Extension of the Cosmic-Ray Energy Spectrum Beyond the Predicted Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz'min Cutoff

The cosmic-ray energy spectrum above 10^{18.5} eV is reported using the updated data set of the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array (AGASA) from February 1990 to October 1997. The energy spectrum extends beyond 10^{20} eV and the energy gap between the highest energy event and the others is being filled up with recently observed events. The spectral shape suggests the absence of the 2.7 K cutoff in the energy spectrum or a possible presence of a new component beyond the 2.7 K cutoff.
