Elucidating the Grey Atmosphere: SHAP Value Analysis of a Random Forest Atmospheric Neutral Density Model

We apply SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) analysis using the TreeSHAP algorithm to a Random Forest model (RANDM) designed to predict thermospheric neutral density based on solar-terrestrial data. The analysis shows that RANDM identifies solar irradiance as a significant predictor of thermospheric density. Additionally, the model differentiates between magnetic local times, finding that dusk sectors have higher densities than dawn sectors, in line with prior research. When comparing storm and quiet-time conditions, we find these trends persist regardless of geomagnetic activity levels. The analysis further demonstrates that larger geomagnetic disturbances during storms, as parameterized by the SYM-H index, are associated with higher neutral densities. Notably, SYM-H begins to have the overall largest contribution to density prediction among model inputs at a threshold of -60 nT. This suggests a quantitative definition where ``storm-time'' begins at SYM-H $< -60$ nT. Overall, using TreeSHAP enhances our understanding of the factors influencing thermospheric density and demonstrates the value of explainable machine learning techniques in space weather research, enabling more interpretable models.

Compton-Thick AGN in the NuSTAR era VI: The observed Compton-thick fraction in the Local Universe

We present the analysis of simultaneous NuSTAR and XMM-Newton data of 8 Compton-thick (CT-) active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates selected in the Swift-Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) 100 month survey. This work is part of an ongoing effort to find and characterize all CT-AGN in the local ($z\leq$0.05) Universe. We used two physically motivated models, MYTorus and borus02, to characterize the sources in the sample, finding 5 of them to be confirmed CT-AGN. These results represent an increase of $\sim19$% over the previous NuSTAR-confirmed, BAT-selected CT-AGN at $z\leq0.05$, bringing the total number to 32. This corresponds to an observed fraction of $\sim 8$\% of all AGN within this volume-limited sample, although it increases to $20\pm5$% when limiting the sample to $z\leq0.01$. Out of a sample of 48 CT-AGN candidates, selected using BAT and soft (0.3$-$10 keV) X-ray data, only 24 are confirmed as CT-AGN with the addition of the NuSTAR data. This highlights the importance of NuSTAR when classifying local obscured AGN. We also note that most of the sources in our full sample of 48 Seyfert 2 galaxies with NuSTAR data have significantly different line-of-sight and average torus column densities, favouring a patchy torus scenario.

The DAFT/FADA survey. I.Photometric redshifts along lines of sight to clusters in the z=[0.4,0.9] interval

As a contribution to the understanding of the dark energy concept, the Dark energy American French Team (DAFT, in French FADA) has started a large project to characterize statistically high redshift galaxy clusters, infer cosmological constraints from Weak Lensing Tomography, and understand biases relevant for constraining dark energy and cluster physics in future cluster and cosmological experiments. The purpose of this paper is to establish the basis of reference for the photo-z determination used in all our subsequent papers, including weak lensing tomography studies. This project is based on a sample of 91 high redshift (z>0.4), massive clusters with existing HST imaging, for which we are presently performing complementary multi-wavelength imaging. This allows us in particular to estimate spectral types and determine accurate photometric redshifts for galaxies along the lines of sight to the first ten clusters for which all the required data are available down to a limit of I_AB=24/24.5 with the LePhare software. The accuracy in redshift is of the order of 0.05 for the range 0.2<z<1.5. We verified that the technique applied to obtain photometric redshifts works well by comparing our results to with previous works. In clusters, photoz accuracy is degraded for bright absolute magnitudes and for the latest and earliest type galaxies. The photoz accuracy also only slightly varies as a function of the spectral type for field galaxies. As a consequence, we find evidence for an environmental dependence of the photoz accuracy, interpreted as the standard used Spectral Energy Distributions being not very well suited to cluster galaxies. Finally, we modeled the LCDCS 0504 mass with the strong arcs detected along this line of sight.

Study of continuum nuclear structure of 12C via (p,p'X) at intermediate energies

The inclusive 12C(p,p') and exclusive 12C(p,p'X) reactions have been studied with a beam energy of 156 MeV and for X = p and alpha. The study focuses on the (p,p'X) reaction mechanism and on the structure of 12C just above the particle-emission threshold, 14 < E_x < 28 MeV. Cross sections were simultaneously measured for all three reactions. The exclusive data were analyzed by making multiple-peak fits of the spectra and by Legendre-polynomial fits of the angular correlations. Multiple-peak fits were also made of the inclusive spectra. The resultant cross sections were compared to theoretical calculations. An analysis of the results shows that this region of E_x consists predominantly of resonant excitations, in contradiction to the findings of previous analyses.
