Transient chaos and Rayleigh particle escape out of a time modulated optical trap

We consider Rayleigh particles in a periodically modulated optical trap formed by two counter-propagating Gaussian beams. It is shown that for certain values of parameters the system exhibits transient chaos which manifests itself in particle acceleration and subsequent directional ejection out of the trap. The escape flights are terminated at the distance of hundreds wavelengths from the trap centrum and the particles return to the trap under the action of the Stokes force. The particle escape is shown to be a threshold effect that can be potentially employed for particle sorting.

Giant resonant enhancement of optical binding of dielectric disks

Two-parametric variation over the aspect ratio of each disk and distance between disks gives rise to numerous events of avoided crossing of resonances of individual disks. For these events the hybridized anti-bonding resonant modes can acquire a morphology close to the Mie resonant mode with high orbital momentum of equivalent sphere. The $Q$ factor of such resonance can exceed the $Q$ factor of isolated disk by two orders in magnitude. We show that dual incoherent counter propagating coaxial Bessel beams with power $1mW/μm^2$ with frequency resonant to such a anti-bonding modes result in unprecedented optical binding forces up to decades of nano Newtons for silicon micron size disks. We show also that a magnitude and sign of optical forces strongly depend on the longitudinal wave vector of the Bessel beams.

Engineering of the extremely high Q factor in two subwavelength dielectric resonators

The high-Q {\it subwavelength} resonances in an isolated dielectric disk modes can be achieved by avoided crossing (anticrossing) of the nonorthogonal TE resonances under variation of the aspect ratio as it was reported by Rybin {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 243901 (2017)]. Traversing over two parameters, the aspect ratio and the distance between two disks, enhances the Q factor by several times compared to the case of the former case of one-parametric avoided crossing in the isolated disk. Therefore successive two-parametric avoided crossing gives multiplicative gain in the Q-factor as it was expected. However if for the single disk its orthogonal resonant modes do not undergo avoided crossing, a presence of the second disk gives removes this restriction and gives rise to the avoided crossing of these modes that enhances the $Q$ factor by two orders in magnitude compared to the case of single disk. Respectively the multipolar decomposition of the anti-bonding resonant mode demonstrates conversion from lower to higher orders of the multipole modes similar to that as shown by Chen {\it et al} [Laser&PhotonicsReviews 13, 1900067 (2019)]. These results are interpreted by that the field configuration at the maximal conversion becomes close to the Mie resonant mode with high orbital momentum in equivalent sphere. For m=1 the resonant modes leakage into both type continua that substantially lowers the Q-factor of the subwavelength resonant modes.

Interaction between coaxial dielectric disks enhances the Q-factor

We study the behavior of resonant modes under variation of the distance between two coaxial dielectric disks and show an avoided crossing of resonances because of interaction between the disks. Owing to coaxial arrange of disks the consideration is separated by the azimuthal index $m=0, 1, 2, \ldots$. In the present paper we consider the case $m=0$. For a long enough distance the resonant modes can be classified as symmetric and antisymmetric hybridizations of the resonant modes of the isolated disk. With decreasing of the distance the interaction becomes stronger that gives rise to avoided crossing of different resonances of the isolated disk. That in turn enhances the $Q$ factor of two disks by one order in magnitude compared to the $Q$ factor of isolated disk.

Reply to "Comment on 'Thomson rings in a disk' "

We demonstrate that our model [Phys.Rev. E91, 032312 (2015)] serves as a useful tool to trace the evolution of equilibrium configurations of one-component charged particles confined in a disk. Our approach reduces significantly the computational effort in minimizing the energy of equilibrium configurations and demonstrates a remarkable agreement with the values provided by molecular dynamics calculations. We show that the Comment misrepresents our paper, and fails to provide plausible arguments against the formation hexagonal structure for n>200 in molecular dynamics calculations.

Random matrix analysis of the monopole strength distribution in $^{208}$Pb

We study statistical properties of the $0^+$ spectrum of $^{208}$Pb in the energy region $E_x\leq20$ MeV. We use the Skyrme interaction SLy4 as our model Hamiltonian to create a single-particle spectrum and to analyze excited states. The finite-rank separable approximation for the particle-hole interaction enables us to perform the calculations in large configuration spaces. We show that while the position of the monopole resonance centroid is determined by one phonon excitations of $0^+$, the phonon-phonon coupling is crucial for the description of a strength distribution of the $0^+$ spectrum. In fact, this coupling has an impact on the spectral rigidity $Δ_3(L)$ which is shifted towards the random matrix limit of the Gaussian orthogonal ensembles.

Cooperative phenomenon in a rippled graphene: Chiral spin guide

We analyze spin scattering in ballistic transport of electrons through a ripple at a normal incidence of an electron flow. The model of a ripple consists of a curved graphene surface in the form of an arc of a circle connected from the left-hand and right-hand sides to two flat graphene sheets. At certain conditions the curvature induced spin-orbit coupling creates a transparent window for incoming electrons with one spin polarization simultaneously with a backscattering of those with opposite polarization. This window is equally likely transparent for electrons with spin up and spin down that move in opposite directions. The spin filtering effect being small in one ripple becomes prominent with the increase of N consequently connected ripples that create a graphene sheet of the sinusoidal type. We present the analytical expressions for spin up (down) transmission probabilities as a function of N connected ripples.

Spin-orbit effects in armchair carbon nanotubes: analytical results

Energy spectra and transport properties of armchair nanotubes with curvature induced spin-orbit interaction are investigated thoroughly. The spin-orbit interaction consists of two terms: the first one preserves the spin symmetry in rotating frame, while the second one breaks it. It is found that the both terms are equally important: i)at scattering on the potential step which mimics a long-range potential in the nanotubes; ii)at transport via nanotube quantum dots. It is shown that an armchair nanotube with the first spin-orbit term works as an ideal spin-filter, while the second term produces a parasitic inductance.

Conformal and Affine Hamiltonian Dynamics of General Relativity

The Hamiltonian approach to the General Relativity is formulated as a joint nonlinear realization of conformal and affine symmetries by means of the Dirac scalar dilaton and the Maurer-Cartan forms. The dominance of the Casimir vacuum energy of physical fields provides a good description of the type Ia supernova luminosity distance--redshift relation. Introducing the uncertainty principle at the Planck's epoch within our model, we obtain the hierarchy of the Universe energy scales, which is supported by the observational data. We found that the invariance of the Maurer-Cartan forms with respect to the general coordinate transformation yields a single-component strong gravitational waves. The Hamiltonian dynamics of the model describes the effect of an intensive vacuum creation of gravitons and the minimal coupling scalar (Higgs) bosons in the Early Universe.

Quantum non-equilibrium approach for fast electron transport in open systems: photosynthetic reaction centers

Creation of electron or exciton by external fields in a system with initially statistically independent unrelaxed vibrational modes leads to an initial condition term. The contribution of this term in the time convolution generalized master equation approach is studied in second order of the perturbation theory in the path integral formalism. The developed approach, applied for analysis of dynamics in the photosynthetic reaction center, exhibits the key role of the initial condition terms at the primary stage of electron transfer.

Conformal Hamiltonian Dynamics of General Relativity

The General Relativity formulated with the aid of the spin connection coefficients is considered in the finite space geometry of similarity with the Dirac scalar dilaton. We show that the redshift evolution of the General Relativity describes the vacuum creation of the matter in the empty Universe at the electroweak epoch and the dilaton vacuum energy plays a role of the dark energy.

Spin control in semiconductor quantum wires

We show that spin-flip rotation in a semiconductor quantum wire, caused by the Rashba and the Dresselhaus interactions (both of arbitrary strengths), can be suppressed by dint of an in-plane magnetic field. We found a new type of symmetry, which arises at a particular set of intensity and orientation of the magnetic field and explains this suppression. Based on our findings, we propose a transport experiment to measure the strengths of the Rashba and the Dresselhaus interactions.

Chaotic Waveguide-Based Resonators for Microlasers

We propose the construction of highly directional emission microlasers using two-dimensional high-index semiconductor waveguides as {\it open} resonators. The prototype waveguide is formed by two collinear leads connected to a cavity of certain shape. The proposed lasing mechanism requires that the shape of the cavity yield mixed chaotic ray dynamics so as to have the appropiate (phase space) resonance islands. These islands allow, via Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the appearance of quasi bound states (QBS) which, in turn, propitiate the lasing mechanism. The energy values of the QBS are found through the solution of the Helmholtz equation. We use classical ray dynamics to predict the direction and intensity of the lasing produced by such open resonators for typical values of the index of refraction.

Understanding quantum scattering properties in terms of purely classical dynamics. 2D open chaotic billiards

We study classical and quantum scattering properties in the ballistic regime of particles in two-dimensional chaotic billiards that are models of electron- or micro- waveguides. To this end we construct the purely classical counterparts of the Scattering Probability (SP) matrix $\mid S_{n,m}\mid^2$ and Husimi distributions and specialize to the case of mixed chaotic motion. Comparison between classical and quantum quantities allows us to discover the purely classical dynamical origin of certain general, as well as particular features that appear in the quantum description of the system. On the other hand, at certain values of energy the tunneling of the wavefunction into classically forbidden regions produces striking differences between the classical and quantum quantities. We also see the manifestation of Whispering Gallery Orbits as a self-similar structure in the transmission part of the classical SP matrix. A potential application of this phenomenom in the field of microlasers is discussed briefly.

Conductance of Open Quantum Billiards and Classical Trajectories

We analyse the transport phenomena of 2D quantum billiards with convex boundary of different shape. The quantum mechanical analysis is performed by means of the poles of the S-matrix while the classical analysis is based on the motion of a free particle inside the cavity along trajectories with a different number of bounces at the boundary. The value of the conductance depends on the manner the leads are attached to the cavity. The Fourier transform of the transmission amplitudes is compared with the length of the classical paths. There is good agreement between classical and quantum mechanical results when the conductance is achieved mainly by special short-lived states such as whispering gallery modes (WGM) and bouncing ball modes (BBM). In these cases, also the localization of the wave functions agrees with the picture of the classical paths. The S-matrix is calculated classically and compared with the transmission coefficients of the quantum mechanical calculations for five modes in each lead. The number of modes coupled to the special states is effectively reduced.

Classical versus Quantum Structure of the Scattering Probability Matrix. Chaotic wave-guides

The purely classical counterpart of the Scattering Probability Matrix (SPM) $\mid S_{n,m}\mid^2$ of the quantum scattering matrix $S$ is defined for 2D quantum waveguides for an arbitrary number of propagating modes $M$. We compare the quantum and classical structures of $\mid S_{n,m}\mid^2$ for a waveguide with generic Hamiltonian chaos. It is shown that even for a moderate number of channels, knowledge of the classical structure of the SPM allows us to predict the global structure of the quantum one and, hence, understand important quantum transport properties of waveguides in terms of purely classical dynamics. It is also shown that the SPM, being an intensity measure, can give additional dynamical information to that obtained by the Poincarè maps.

Whispering gallery modes in open quantum billiards

The poles of the S-matrix and the wave functions of open 2D quantum billiards with convex boundary of different shape are calculated by the method of complex scaling. Two leads are attached to the cavities. The conductance of the cavities is calculated at energies with one, two and three open channels in each lead. Bands of overlapping resonance states appear which are localized along the convex boundary of the cavities and contribute coherently to the conductance. These bands correspond to the whispering gallery modes appearing in the classical calculations.

Two-component model of a spin-polarized transport

Effect of the spin-involved interaction of electrons with impurity atoms or defects to the transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas is described by using a simplifying two-component model. Components representing spin-up and spin-down states are supposed to be coupled at a discrete set of points within a conduction channel. The used limit of the short-range interaction allows to solve the relevant scattering problem exactly. By varying the model parameters different transport regimes of two-terminal devices with ferromagnetic contacts can be described. In a quasi-ballistic regime the resulting difference between conductances for the parallel and antiparallel orientation of the contact magnetization changes its sign as a function of the length of the conduction channel if appropriate model parameters are chosen. The effect is in agreement with recent experimental observations.
