Near Muon Range Detector for the K2K Experiment -Construction and Performance-

A muon range detector (MRD) has been constructed as a near detector for the KEK-to-Kamioka long-baseline neutrino experiment (K2K). It monitors the neutrino beam properties at the near site by measuring the energy, angle and production point of muons produced by charged-current neutrino interaction. The detector has been working stably since the start of the K2K experiment.

The JHF-Kamioka neutrino project

The JHF-Kamioka neutrino project is a second generation long base line neutrino oscillation experiment that probes physics beyond the Standard Model by high precision measurements of the neutrino masses and mixing. A high intensity narrow band neutrino beam is produced by secondary pions created by a high intensity proton synchrotron at JHF (JAERI). The neutrino energy is tuned to the oscillation maximum at ~1 GeV for a baseline length of 295 km towards the world largest water Cerenkov detector, Super-Kamiokande. Its excellent energy resolution and particle identification enable the reconstruction of the initial neutrino energy, which is compared with the narrow band neutrino energy, through the quasi-elastic interaction. The physics goal of the first phase is an order of magnitude better precision in the nu_mu to nu_tau oscillation measurement (delta(Delta m_23^2)=10^-4 eV^2 and delta(sin^22theta_23)=0.01), a factor of 20 more sensitive search in the nu_mu to nu_e appearance (sin^22theta_{mu e} ~ 0.5sin^22theta_{13}>0.003), and a confirmation of the nu_mu to nu_tau oscillation or discovery of sterile neutrinos by detecting the neutral current events. In the second phase, an upgrade of the accelerator from 0.75 MW to 4 MW in beam power and the construction of 1 Mt Hyper-Kamiokande detector at Kamioka site are envisaged. Another order of magnitude improvement in the nu_mu to nu_e oscillation sensitivity, a sensitive search of the CP violation in the lepton sector (CP phase "delta" down to 10-20 degrees), and an order of magnitude improvement in the proton decay sensitivity is also expected.

Dynamics vs electronic states of vortex core of high-T_c superconductors investigated by high-frequency impedance measurement

Dynamics of vortices reflects the electronic states of quasiparticles in the core. To understand this, we investigated the following three issues. (1) We investigated the complex surface impedance, Zs, of YBa2Cu3Oy as a function of magnetic field, H. The total features were well expressed by the Coffey-Clem model. From the data, we estimated the viscosity and pinning frequency, which were found to be independent of frequency. In particular, the obtained viscosity definitely shows that the core of vortex of YBa2Cu3Oy is moderately clean. This result suggests that new physics will show up, for the physics of quantum moderately clean vortex core is unknown at all. (2) An anomaly found in the surface reactance at the first order transition (FOT) of vortex lattice was investigated in Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy with various doping levels. As a result, the anomaly was found only in the samples exhibiting the FOT. On the other hand, we did not observe the anomaly in YBa2Cu3Oy. These suggest that the anomaly is due to the change in the electronic states of the vortices characteristic of materials with very strong anisotropy. (3) We measured H dependence of both the thermal conductivity κ(H) and Zs(H) in exactly the same pieces of crystal. We could not find any anomaly in Zs(H) even at the onset of the plateau. This result suggests that the origin of the plateau in κ(H) is not a drastic phase transition but is rather gradual crossover.

Magnetic and electronic structures of superconducting RuSr$_2$GdCu$_2$O$_8$

The coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in RuSr$_2$GdCu$_2$O$_8$ was reported both from experiments (by Tallon et. al.) and first-principles calculations (by Pickett et. al.). Here we report that our first-principles full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) calculations, employing the precise crystal structure with structural distortions (i.e., RuO$_6$ rotations) determined by neutron diffraction, demonstrate that antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ru moments is energetically favored over the previously proposed ferromagnetic ordering. Our results are consistent with recently performed magnetic neutron diffraction experiments (Lynn et. al). Ru $t_{2g}$ states, which are responsible for the magnetism, have only a very small interaction with Cu $e_g$ states, which results in a small exchange splitting of these states. The Fermi surface, characterized by strongly hybridized $dpσ$ orbitals, has nesting features similar to those in the two-dimensional high $T_c$ cuprate superconductors.

Temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent thermal conductivity of pure and Zn-doped Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} single crystals

The thermal conductivity κof Bi-2212 is measured in pure and Zn-doped crystals as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The in-plane resistivity is also measured on the identical samples. Using these data, we make a crude estimate of the impurity-scattering rate Γof the pure and the Zn-doped crystals. Our measurement show that the "plateau" in the κ(H) profile is not observed in the majority of our Bi-2212 crystals, including one of the cleanest crystals available to date. The estimated values of Γfor the pure and Zn-doped samples allow us to compare the κ(H) data with the existing theories of the quasiparticle heat transport in d-wave superconductors under magnetic field. Our analysis indicates that a proper inclusion of the quasiparticle-vortex scattering, which is expected to play the key role in the peculiar behavior of the κ(H), is important for a quantitative understanding of the QP heat transport in the presence of the vortices.

Fermi Surface Topology of Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+d} at hν=33eV: hole or electron-like?

We present new results from Angle-Resolved Photoemission experiments (ARPES) on overdoped Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+d} (BSCCO) crystals. With greatly improved energy and momentum resolution, we clearly identify the existence of electron-like portions of the Fermi Surface (FS) near \bar{M} at hν=33eV. This is consistent with previously reported data and is robust against various FS crossing criteria. It is not due to an artifact induced from \vec{k}-dependent matrix element effects. We also present evidence for a breakage in the FS pointing to the possible existence of two types of electronic components.

Quantum Key Distribution using Two Coherent States of Light and their Superposition

Quantum mechanical complementarity ensures the security of the key-distribution scheme reported by Brassard and Bennet in 1984 (BB84), but does not prohibit use of multi-photons as a signal carrier. We describe a novel BB84 scheme in which two nearly orthogonal coherent states carry the key, and the superposition of these states (cat states) protects the communication channel from eavesdropping. Information leakage to eavesdroppers can be determined from the visibility of the interferential fringes in the distribution of the outcome when a certain quadrature component is measured through homodyne detection. The effect of channel loss and detector inefficiency is discussed.

A re-examination of the electronic structure of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+d} and Bi_2Sr_2Cu_1O_{6+d} - An electron-like Fermi Surface and the absence of flat bands at $E_F$

We present a re-examination of the electronic structure and Fermi Surface (FS) of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) as obtained from angle-resolved photoemission experiments. By applying a stricter set of FS crossing criteria as well as by varying the incident photon energy outside the usual range, we have found very different behavior from that previously observed. In particular we have found an electron-like FS centered around the Gamma point, and the flat bands at E_F near the M point of the zone are absent. These results are robust over a large range of dopings and from single to double layer samples.

Vortex phase transformations probed by the local ac response of Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} single crystals with various doping

The linear ac response of the vortex system is measured locally in Bi-2212 single crystals at various doping, using a miniature two-coil mutual-inductance technique. It was found that a step-like change in the local ac response takes place exactly at the first-order transition (FOT) temperature T_{FOT}(H) determined by a global dc magnetization measurement. The T_{FOT}(H) line in the H-T phase diagram becomes steeper with increasing doping. In the higher-field region where the FOT is not observed, the local ac response still shows a broadened but distinct feature, which can be interpreted to mark the growth of a short-range order in the vortex system.

Cylindrical Domain Walls and Gravitational Waves -- Einstein Rosen wave emission from momentarily static initial configuration --

A self-gravitating cylindrical domain wall is considered as an example of non-spherical wall to clarify the interaction between a domain wall and gravitational waves. We consider the time evolution from a momentarily static initial configuration within an infinitesimal time interval using the metric junction formalism. We found that the wall with a large initial radius radiates large amplitude of the gravitational waves and undergoes its large back reaction.

Measurement of B(D_s+ -> mu+ nu_mu)/B(D_s+ -> phi mu+ nu_mu) and Determination of the Decay Constant f_{D_s}

We have observed $23.2 \pm 6.0_{-0.9}^{+1.0}$ purely-leptonic decays of $D_s^+ -> μ^+ ν_μ$ from a sample of muonic one prong decay events detected in the emulsion target of Fermilab experiment E653. Using the $D_s^+ -> ϕμ^+ ν_μ$ yield measured previously in this experiment, we obtain $B(D_s^+ --> μ^+ ν_μ) / B(D_s^+ --> ϕμ^+ ν_μ) =0.16 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03$. In addition, we extract the decay constant $f_{D_s}=194 \pm 35 \pm 20 \pm 14 MeV$.

Surface gravity in dynamical spherically symmetric spacetimes

A definition of surface gravity at the apparent horizon of dynamical spherically symmetric spacetimes is proposed. It is based on a unique foliation by ingoing null hypersurfaces. The function parametrizing the hypersurfaces can be interpreted as the phase of a light wave uniformly emitted by some far-away static observer. The definition gives back the accepted value of surface gravity in the static case by virtue of its nonlocal character. Although the definition is motivated by the behavior of outgoing null rays, it turns out that there is a simple connection between the generalized surface gravity, the acceleration of any radially moving observer, and the observed frequency change of the infalling light signal. In particular, this gives a practical and simple method of how any geodesic observer can determine surface gravity by measuring only the redshift of the infalling light wave. The surface gravity can be expressed as an integral of matter field quantities along an ingoing null line, which shows that it is a continuous function along the apparent horizon. A formula for the area change of the apparent horizon is presented, and the possibility of thermodynamical interpretation is discussed. Finally, concrete expressions of surface gravity are given for a number of four-dimensional and two-dimensional dynamical black hole solutions.

Thermal Field Theory in Non-Equilibrium States

Conventional transport theory is not really applicable to non-equilibrium systems which exhibit strong quantum effects. We present two different approaches to overcome this problem. Firstly we point out how transport equations may be derived that incorporate a nontrivial spectral function as a typical quantum effect, and test this approach in a toy model of a strongly interacting degenerate plasma. Secondly we explore a path to include non-equilibrium effects into quantum field theory through momentum mixing transformations in Fock space. Although the two approaches are completely orthogonal, they lead to the same coherent conclusion.

Quantum Formation of Black Hole and Wormhole in Gravitational Collapse of a Dust Shell

Quantum-mechanical model of self-gravitating dust shell is considered. To clarify the relation between classical and quantum spacetime which the shell collapse form, we consider various time slicing on which quantum mechanics is developed. By considering the static time slicing which corresponds to an observer at a constant circumference radius, we obtain the wave functions of the shell motion and the discrete mass spectra which specify the global structures of spherically symmetric spacetime formed by the shell collapse. It is found that wormhole states are forbidden when the rest mass is comparable with Plank mass scale due to the zero-point quantum fluctuations.

Critical Behavior of Black Hole Formation in a Scalar Wave Collapse

We present a self-similar model of spherically symmetric collapse of a massless scalar field with a parameter $p$. The black hole formation is explicitly shown to occur only in the strong-field implosion of $p >1$. The field evolution in the critical limit $ p \rightarrow 1 $ is compared with numerical results found by Choptuik.

Quantum Fluctuations of Black Hole Geometry

By using the minisuperspace model for the interior metric ofstatic black holes, we solve the Wheeler-DeWitt equation to study quantum mechanics of the horizon geometry. Our basic idea is to introduce the gravitational mass and the expansions of null rays as quantum operators. Then, the exact wave function is found as a mass eigenstate, and the radius of the apparent horizon is quantum-mechanically defined. In the evolution of the metric variables, the wave function changes from a WKB solution giving the classical trajectories to a tunneling solution. By virtue of the quantum fluctuations of the metric evolution beyond the WKB approximation, we can observe a static black hole state with the apparent horizon separating from the event horizon.
