Observation of Dirac Cone Electronic Dispersion in BaFe2As2

We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of BaFe2As2, which is the parent compound of the so-called 122 phase of the iron-pnictide high-temperature superconductors. We reveal the existence of a Dirac cone in the electronic structure of this material below the spin-density-wave temperature, which is responsible for small spots of high photoemission intensity at the Fermi level. Our analysis suggests that the cone is slightly anisotropic and its apex is located very near the Fermi level, leading to tiny Fermi surface pockets. Moreover, the bands forming the cone show an anisotropic leading edge gap away from the cone that suggests a nodal spin-density-wave description.

Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy of Iron-Chalcogenide Superconductor Fe1.03Te0.7Se0.3 : Strong-Coupling Superconductivity and Universality of Inter-Band Scattering

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of iron-chalcogenide superconductor Fe1.03Te0.7Se0.3 (Tc = 13 K) to investigate the electronic structure relevant to superconductivity. We observed a hole- and an electron-like Fermi surfaces at the Brillouin zone center and corner, respectively, which are nearly nested by the Q~(pi, pi) wave vector. We do not find evidence for the nesting instability with Q~(pi+delta, 0) reminiscent of the antiferromagnetic order in the parent compound Fe1+yTe. We have observed an isotropic superconducting gap along the hole-like Fermi surface with the gap size Delta of ~4 meV (2Delta/kBTc~7), demonstrating the strong-coupling nature of the superconductivity. The observed similarity of low-energy electronic excitations between iron-chalcogenide and iron-arsenide superconductors strongly suggests that common interactions which involve Q~(pi, pi) scattering are responsible for the superconducting pairing.

Fermi surface nesting induced strong pairing in iron-based superconductors

The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in iron pnictides raised the possibility of an unconventional superconducting mechanism in multiband materials. The observation of Fermi-surface(FS)-dependent nodeless superconducting gaps suggested that inter-FS interactions may play a crucial role in superconducting pairing. In the optimally hole-doped Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$, the pairing strength is enhanced simultaneously (2$Δ$/Tc$\sim$7) on the nearly nested FS pockets, i.e. the inner holelike ($α$) FS and the two hybridized electronlike FSs, while the pairing remains weak (2$Δ$/Tc$\sim$3.6) in the poorly-nested outer hole-like ($β$) FS. Here we report that in the electron-doped BaFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_2$ the FS nesting condition switches from the $α$ to the $β$ FS due to the opposite size changes for hole- and electron-like FSs upon electron doping. The strong pairing strength (2$Δ$/Tc$\sim$6) is also found to switch to the nested $β$ FS, indicating an intimate connection between FS nesting and superconducting pairing, and strongly supporting the inter-FS pairing mechanism in the iron-based superconductors.

Evolution of a pairing-induced pseudogap from the superconducting gap of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6

We have performed an ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of slightly-overdoped (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of pseudogap. By using a newly developed xenon-plasma light source, we determined the comprehensive momentum and temperature dependences of the superconducting gap and the pseudogap. We found that the antinodal pseudogap persists far above the superconducting transition temperature and is smoothly connected to the nodal gap. The characteristic temperature of the pseudogap scales well with the superconducting-gap size irrespective of the momentum location. The present experimental results point to the pairing origin of the pseudogap.

Superconducting gap symmetry of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the optimally-doped Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ compound and determined the accurate momentum dependence of the superconducting (SC) gap in four Fermi-surface sheets including a newly discovered outer electron pocket at the M point. The SC gap on this pocket is nearly isotropic and its magnitude is comparable ($Δ$ $\sim$ 11 meV) to that of the inner electron and hole pockets ($\sim$12 meV), although it is substantially larger than that of the outer hole pocket ($\sim$6 meV). The Fermi-surface dependence of the SC gap value is basically consistent with $Δ$($k$) = $Δ$$_0$cos$k_x$cos$k_y$ formula expected for the extended s-wave symmetry. The observed finite deviation from the simple formula suggests the importance of multi-orbital effects.

Electronic structure of heavily electron-doped BaFe$_{1.7}$Co$_{0.3}$As$_2$ studied by angle-resolved photoemission

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on heavily electron-doped non-superconducting (SC) BaFe$_{1.7}$Co$_{0.3}$As$_2$. We find that the two hole Fermi surface pockets at the zone center observed in the hole-doped superconducting Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ are absent or very small in this compound, while the two electron pockets at the M point significantly expand due to electron doping by the Co substitution. Comparison of the Fermi surface between non-SC and SC samples indicates that the coexistence of hole and electron pockets connected via the antiferromagnetic wave vector is essential in realizing the mechanism of superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors.

Electronic structure of optimally doped pnictide Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$: a comprehensive ARPES investigation

We have conducted a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission study on the normal state electronic structure of the Fe-based superconductor Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. We have identified four dispersive bands which cross the Fermi level and form two hole-like Fermi surfaces around $Γ$ and two electron-like Fermi surfaces around M. There are two nearly nested Fermi surface pockets connected by an antiferromagnetic ($π$, $π$) wavevector. The observed Fermi surfaces show small $k_z$ dispersion and a total volume consistent with Luttinger theorem. Compared to band structure calculations, the overall bandwidth is reduced by a factor of 2. However, many low energy dispersions display stronger mass renormalization by a factor of $\sim$ 4, indicating possible orbital (energy) dependent correlation effects. Using an effective tight banding model, we fitted the band structure and the Fermi surfaces to obtain band parameters reliable for theoretical modeling and calculations of the important physical quantities, such as the specific heat coefficient.

Band Structure and Fermi Surface of an Extremely Overdoped Iron-Based Superconductor KFe2As2

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on heavily overdoped KFe_2As_2 (transition temperature (Tc = 3 K). We observed several renormalized bands near the Fermi level with a renormalization factor of 2-4. While the Fermi surface (FS) around the Brillouin-zone center is qualitatively similar to that of optimally-doped Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2 (x = 0.4; Tc = 37 K), the FS topology around the zone corner (M point) is markedly different: the two electron FS pockets are completely absent due to excess of hole doping. This result indicates that the electronic states around the M point play an important role in the high-Tc superconductivity of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and suggests that the interband scattering via the antiferromagnetic wave vector essentially controls the Tc value in the overdoped region.

Observation of an Orbital Selective Electron-Mode Coupling in Fe-Based High-$T_c$ Superconductors

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the new superconductor Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ in the low energy range. We report the observation of an anomaly around 25 meV in the dispersion of superconducting Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ samples that nearly vanishes above $T_c$. The energy scale of the related mode (13$\pm$2 meV) and its strong dependence on orbital and temperature indicates that it is unlikely related to phonons. Moreover, the momentum locations of the kink can be connected by the antiferromagnetic wavevector. Our results point towards an unconventional electronic origin of the mode and the superconducting pairing in the Fe-based superconductors, and strongly support the anti-phase s-wave pairing symmetry.

Coexistence of competing orders with two energy gaps in real and momentum space in high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta

The superconducting phase of the high-Tc cuprates has been thought to be described by a single d-wave pairing order parameter. Recently, there has been growing evidence suggesting that another form of order, possibly inherited from the pseudogap phase above Tc, may coexist with superconductivity in the underdoped regime. Through a combined study of scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report the observation of two distinct gaps (a small-gap and a large-gap) that coexist both in real space and in the anti-nodal region of momentum space in the superconducting phase of Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta. We show that the small-gap is associated with superconductivity. The large-gap persists to temperatures above the transition temperature Tc and is found to be linked to short-range charge ordering. Remarkably, we find a strong, short-ranged correlation between the local small- and large- gap magnitudes suggesting that the superconductivity and charge ordering are affected by similar physical processes.

Observation of Fermi-surface-dependent nodeless superconducting gaps in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2

The recent discovery of superconductivity in iron-arsenic compounds below a transition temperature (Tc) as high as 55K ended the monopoly of copper oxides (cuprates) in the family of high-Tc superconductors. A critical issue in understanding this new superconductor, as in the case of cuprates, is the nature, in particular the symmetry and orbital dependence, of the superconducting gap. There are conflicting experimental results, mostly from indirect measurements of the low energy excitation gap, ranging from one gap to two gaps, from line nodes to nodeless gap function in momentum space. Here we report a direct observation of the superconducting gap, including its momentum, temperature, and Fermi surface (FS) dependence in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Tc = 37 K) using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. We find two superconducting gaps with different values: a large gap (~ 12 meV) on the two small hole-like and electron-like FS sheets, and a small gap (~ 6 meV) on the large hole-like FS. Both gaps, closing simultaneously at the bulk Tc, are nodeless and nearly isotropic around their respective FS sheets. The isotropic pairing interactions are strongly orbital dependent, as the ratio 2Delta/kBTc switches from weak to strong coupling on different bands. The same and surprisingly large superconducting gap due to strong pairing on the two small FS, which are connected by the (pi, 0) spin-density-wave vector in the parent compound, strongly suggests that the pairing mechanism originates from the inter-band interactions between these two nested FS sheets.

Superconducting Gap and Pseudogap in Iron-Based Layered Superconductor La(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$)FeAs

We report high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy of newly-discovered iron-based layered superconductor La(O$_{0.93}$F$_{0.07}$)FeAs (Tc = 24 K). We found that the superconducting gap shows a marked deviation from the isotropic s-wave symmetry. The estimated gap size at 5 K is 3.6 meV in the s- or axial p-wave case, while it is 4.1 meV in the polar p- or d-wave case. We also found a pseudogap of 15-20 meV above Tc, which is gradually filled-in with increasing temperature and closes at temperature far above Tc similarly to copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors.

Nucleon and Delta resonances in K Sigma(1385) photoproduction from nucleons

The reaction mechanisms for $KΣ(1385)$ photoproduction from the reaction $γp \to K^+Σ^{0}(1385)$ in the resonance energy region are investigated in a hadronic model. Both contributions from $N$ and $Δ$ resonances of masses around 2 GeV as given in the Review of Particle Data Group and by the quark model predictions are included. The Lagrangians for describing the decays of these resonances into $KΣ(1385)$ are constructed with the coupling constants determined from the decay amplitudes predicted by a quark model. Comparing the resulting total cross section for the reaction $γp \to K^+Σ^{0}(1385)$ with the preliminary data from the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, we find that the most important contributions are from the two-star rated resonances $Δ(2000) F_{35}$, $Δ(1940) D_{33}$, and $N(2080) D_{13}$, as well as the missing resonance $N\frac32^-(2095)$ predicted in the quark model. Predictions on the differential cross section and photon asymmetry in this reaction are also given.

On the sign of the pi-rho-omega coupling constant

It is shown that the relative sign between the $NNω$ and $πρω$ coupling constants can be determined most sensitively from $ω$ production processes in $NN$ collisions. Recent data on these reactions clearly favor the sign of the $πρω$ coupling constant which is opposite to that inferred from studies of the photoproduction reaction in combination with the vector meson dominance assumption and used by many authors. Implication of this finding in the description of other reactions is discussed.

Bulk and surface low-energy excitations in YBa2Cu3O7-d studied by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on YBa2Cu3O7-delta (Y123; delta = 0.06; Tc = 92 K). By accurately determining the Fermi surface and energy band dispersion, we solve long-standing controversial issues as to the anomalous electronic states of Y-based high-Tc cuprates. We unambiguously identified surface-bilayer-derived bonding and antibonding bands, together with their bulk counterparts. The surface bands are highly overdoped (hole concentration x = 0.29), showing no evidence for the gap opening or the dispersion anomaly in the antinodal region, while the bulk bands show a clear dx2-y2-wave superconducting gap and the Bogoliubov quasiparticle-like behavior with a characteristic energy scale of 50-60 meV indicative of a strong electron-boson coupling in the superconducting state. All these results suggest that the metallic and superconducting states coexist at the adjacent bilayer of Y123 surface.

Gauge-invariant approach to meson photoproduction including the final-state interaction

A fully gauge-invariant (pseudoscalar) meson photoproduction amplitude off a nucleon including the final-state interaction is derived. The approach based on a comprehensive field-theoretical formalism developed earlier by one of the authors replaces certain dynamical features of the full interaction current by phenomenological auxiliary contact currents. A procedure is outlined that allows for a systematic improvement of this approximation. The feasibility of the approach is illustrated by applying it to both the neutral and charged pion photoproductions.

Photoproduction of Xi off nucleons

The photoproduction reaction $γN \to K K Ξ$ is investigated based on a relativistic meson-exchange model of hadronic interactions. The production amplitude is calculated in the tree-level approximation from relevant effective Lagrangians, whose (coupling constant) parameters are mostly fixed from the empirical data and/or quark models together with SU(3) symmetry considerations. Gauge invariance of the resulting amplitude is maintained by introducing the contact currents by extending the gauge-invariant approach of Haberzettl for one-meson photoproduction to two-meson photoproduction. The role of the intermediate low-lying hyperons and of the intermediate higher-mass hyperon resonances are analyzed in detail. In particular, the basic features of the production of $Ξ^-(1318)$ in $γp \to K^+ K^+ Ξ^-$ and their possible manifestations in the forthcoming experimental data are discussed.
