de Sitter extremal surfaces, time contours, complexifications and pseudo-entropies

We study no-boundary de Sitter extremal surfaces and their pseudo-entropy areas for generic subregions at the future boundary, building on previous work. For large subregions, timelike+Euclidean extremal surfaces exist with transparent geometric interpretations, as do complex ones. The situation for small subregions is analogous to Poincare $dS$ and only complex extremal surfaces exist. In general, the extremal surface area integrals are defined via time contours in the complex time plane. We find multiple extremal surfaces with indistinguishable areas whose time contours can be deformed into each other in the complex time plane without obstruction, which are equivalent for these purposes. This also suggests equivalences between complex $dS$ replica geometries. We discuss $dS_3$ as a simple example at length. This suggests a picture for multiple subregions and entropy inequalities in de Sitter, as encoding $AdS$ ones via analytic continuation. We also discuss mapping future boundary subregions and those on constant time slices in the static patch via lightrays.

Black hole Near Horizons through the Looking Glass

We show that the near horizon of a generic non-extremal black hole (BH) can be understood in terms of a Carrollian geometry with two null directions, also called a String-Carroll (SC) geometry. The base space of this fibre-bundle structure is a sphere (or a plane for a black brane) and the fibre is the two-dimensional Rindler spacetime. We launch a detailed study of probes in this geometry. We study particle geodesics and scalar fields. The first part of the paper constructs geodesics and probe scalar fields directly in the SC geometry. We then look at a wide class of examples, including the Schwarzschild BH and the Kerr BH in asymptotically flat spacetimes, the BTZ BH and the black brane in AdS spacetimes, as well as Lifshitz black holes and construct the explicit maps to the SC geometry to obtain results specific to each case. These results are reproduced by considering the probe particles and fields in the original BH background and taking the near-horizon limit of the solutions. Our encyclopedia of examples establishes the notion of SC geometries as near-horizon geometries of non-extremal black objects, paving the way for a detailed, intricate future analysis of the quantum aspects of this geometry.

$dS$ extremal surfaces, replicas, boundary Renyi entropies in $dS/CFT$ and time entanglement

We develop further previous work on de Sitter extremal surfaces and time entanglement structures in quantum mechanics. In the first part, we first discuss explicit quotient geometries. Then we construct smooth bulk geometries with replica boundary conditions at the future boundary and evaluate boundary Renyi entropies in $dS/CFT$. The bulk calculation pertains to the semiclassical de Sitter Wavefunction and thus evaluates pseudo-Renyi entropies. In 3-dimensions, the geometry in quotient variables is Schwarzschild de Sitter. The 4-dim $dS$ geometry involves hyperbolic foliations and is a complex geometry satisfying a regularity criterion that amounts to requiring a smooth Euclidean continuation. Overall this puts on a firmer footing previous Lewkowycz-Maldacena replica arguments based on analytic continuation for the extremal surface areas via appropriate cosmic branes. In the second part (independent of de Sitter), we study various aspects of time entanglement in quantum mechanics, in particular the reduced time evolution operator, weak values of operators localized to subregions, a transition matrix operator with two copies of the time evolution operator, autocorrelation functions for operators localized to subregions, and finally future-past entangled states and factorization. Based on these, we then give some comments on a cosmological transition matrix using the de Sitter Wavefunction.

No-boundary extremal surfaces in slow-roll inflation and other cosmologies

Building on previous work on de Sitter extremal surfaces anchored at the future boundary, we study no-boundary extremal surfaces in slow-roll inflation models, with perturbations to no-boundary global $dS$ preserving the spatial isometry. While in pure de Sitter space the Euclidean hemisphere gives a real area equalling half de Sitter entropy, the no-boundary extremal surface areas here have nontrivial real and imaginary pieces overall. We evaluate the area integrals in the complex time-plane defining appropriate contours. For the 4-dim case, the real and imaginary finite corrections at leading order in the slow-roll parameter match those in the semiclassical expansion of the Wavefunction (or action), and corroborate the cosmic brane interpretation discussed previously. We also study no-boundary extremal surfaces in other cosmologies including 3-dimensional inflation and Schwarzschild de Sitter spaces with small mass.

Cosmological singularities, holographic complexity and entanglement

We study holographic volume complexity for various families of holographic cosmologies with Kasner-like singularities, in particular with $AdS$, hyperscaling violating and Lifshitz asymptotics. We find through extensive numerical studies that the complexity surface always bends in the direction away from the singularity and transitions from spacelike near the boundary to lightlike in the interior. As the boundary anchoring time slice approaches the singularity, the transition to lightlike is more rapid, with the spacelike part shrinking. The complexity functional has vanishing contributions from the lightlike region so in the vicinity of the singularity, complexity is vanishingly small, indicating a dual Kasner state of vanishingly low complexity, suggesting an extreme thinning of the effective degrees of freedom dual to the near singularity region. We also develop further previous studies on extremal surfaces for holographic entanglement entropy, and find that in the IR limit they reveal similar behaviour as complexity.

Small Schwarzschild de Sitter black holes, the future boundary and islands

We continue the study of 4-dimensional Schwarzschild de Sitter black holes in the regime where the black hole mass is small compared with the de Sitter scale, following arXiv:2207.10724 [hep-th]. The de Sitter temperature is very low compared with that of the black hole. We consider the future boundary as the location where the black hole Hawking radiation is collected. Using 2-dimensional tools, we find unbounded growth of the entanglement entropy of radiation as the radiation region approaches the entire future boundary. Self-consistently including appropriate late time islands emerging just inside the black hole horizon leads to a reasonable Page curve. We also discuss other potential island solutions which show inconsistencies.

Further remarks on de Sitter space, extremal surfaces and time entanglement

We develop further the investigations in arXiv:2210.12963 [hep-th] on de Sitter space, extremal surfaces and time entanglement. We discuss the no-boundary de Sitter extremal surface areas as certain analytic continuations from $AdS$ while also amounting to space-time rotations. The structure of the extremal surfaces suggests a geometric picture of the time-entanglement or pseudo-entanglement wedge. We also study some entropy relations for multiple subregions. The analytic continuation suggests a heuristic Lewkowycz-Maldacena formulation of the extremal surface areas. In the bulk, this is now a replica formulation on the Wavefunction which suggests interpretation as pseudo-entropy. Finally we also discuss aspects of future-past entangled states and time evolution.

Notes on time entanglement and pseudo-entropy

Following arXiv:2210.12963 [hep-th], we investigate aspects of the time evolution operator regarded as a density operator and associated entanglement-like structures in various quantum systems. These involve timelike separations and generically lead to complex-valued entropy, although there are interesting real subfamilies. There are many parallels and close relations with reduced transition matrices and pseudo-entropy, which we discuss and clarify. For instance, a related quantity involves the time evolution operator along with a projection onto some initial state, which amounts to analysing pseudo-entropy for the initial state and its time-evolved final state.

de Sitter space, extremal surfaces and "time-entanglement"

We refine previous investigations on de Sitter space and extremal surfaces anchored at the future boundary $I^+$. Since such surfaces do not return, they require extra data or boundary conditions in the past (interior). In entirely Lorentzian de Sitter spacetime, this leads to future-past timelike surfaces stretching between $I^\pm$. Apart from an overall $-i$ factor (relative to spacelike surfaces in $AdS$) their areas are real and positive. With a no-boundary type boundary condition, the top half of these timelike surfaces joins with a spacelike part on the hemisphere giving a complex-valued area. Motivated by these, we describe two aspects of "time-entanglement" in simple toy models in quantum mechanics. One is based on a future-past thermofield double type state entangling timelike separated states, which leads to entirely positive structures. Another is based on the time evolution operator and reduced transition amplitudes, which leads to complex-valued entropy.

Small Schwarzschild de Sitter black holes, quantum extremal surfaces and islands

We study 4-dimensional Schwarzschild de Sitter black holes in the regime where the black hole mass is small compared with the de Sitter scale. Then the de Sitter temperature is very low compared with that of the black hole and we study the black hole, approximating the ambient de Sitter space as a frozen classical background. We consider distant observers in the static diamond, far from the black hole but within the cosmological horizon. Using 2-dimensional tools, we find that the entanglement entropy of radiation exhibits linear growth in time, indicative of the information paradox for the black hole. Self-consistently including an appropriate island emerging at late times near the black hole horizon leads to a reasonable Page curve. There are close parallels with flat space Schwarzschild black holes in the regime we consider.

M5-brane prongs, string soliton bound states and wall-crossing

We study abelian M5-brane field configurations representing BPS bound states of self-dual string solitons whose locations correspond to the endlines of M2-branes ending on the M5-branes. The BPS equations are obtained from appropriate Bogomolny completion of the effective abelian low energy functional with two transverse scalars, using two vectors representing the directions along which these endline strings extend. Then we impose boundary conditions on the scalars near the string soliton cores. This leads to a molecule-like equilibrium structure of two non-parallel string solitons at fixed transverse separations, with the M5-brane "prong" deformations comprising two "spikes", each shaped like a ridge. The resulting picture becomes increasingly accurate as one approaches the wall of marginal stability, on which these states decay. There are various parallels with wall-crossing phenomena for string web configurations obtained from D3-brane deformations.

Cosmologies, singularities and quantum extremal surfaces

Following arXiv:2012.07351 [hep-th], we study quantum extremal surfaces in various families of cosmologies with Big-Crunch singularities, by extremizing the generalized entropy in 2-dimensional backgrounds which can be thought of as arising from dimensional reduction. Focussing first on the isotropic $AdS$ Kasner case, introducing a spatial regulator enables relating the locations in time of the quantum extremal surface and the observer. This shows that the quantum extremal surface lags behind the observer location. A potential island-like region, upon analysing more closely near the island boundary, turns out to be inconsistent. Similar results arise for other holographic cosmologies. We then study certain families of null Kasner singularities where we find that the quantum extremal surface can reach the near singularity region although the on-shell generalized entropy is generically singular. We also study other cosmologies including de Sitter (Poincare slicing) and FRW cosmologies under certain conditions.

Cosmological singularities, entanglement and quantum extremal surfaces

We study aspects of entanglement and extremal surfaces in various families of spacetimes exhibiting cosmological, Big-Crunch, singularities, in particular isotropic $AdS$ Kasner. The classical extremal surface dips into the bulk radial and time directions. Explicitly analysing the extremization equations in the semiclassical region far from the singularity, we find the surface bends in the direction away from the singularity. In the 2-dim cosmologies obtained by dimensional reduction of these and other singularities, we have studied quantum extremal surfaces by extremizing the generalized entropy. The resulting extremization shows the quantum extremal surfaces to always be driven to the semiclassical region far from the singularity. We give some comments and speculations on our analysis.

On aspects of 2-dim dilaton gravity, dimensional reduction and holography

We discuss aspects of generic 2-dimensional dilaton gravity theories. The 2-dim geometry is in general conformal to $AdS_2$ and has IR curvature singularities at zero temperature: this can be regulated by a black hole. The on-shell action is divergent: we discuss the holographic energy-momentum tensor by adding appropriate counterterms. For theories obtained by dimensional reduction of the gravitational sector of higher dimensional theories, for instance higher dimensional $AdS$ gravity as a concrete example, the 2-dimensional description dovetails with the higher dimensional one. We also discuss more general theories containing an extra scalar field which now drives nontrivial dynamics. Finally we discuss aspects of the 2-dimensional cosmological singularities discussed in earlier work. These studies suggest that generic 2-dim dilaton gravity theories are somewhat distinct from JT gravity and theories "near JT".

Cosmological singularities and 2-dimensional dilaton gravity

We study Big-Bang or -Crunch cosmological singularities in 2-dimensional dilaton-gravity-scalar theories, in general obtained by dimensional reduction of higher dimensional theories. The dilaton potential encodes information about the asymptotic data defining the theories, and encompasses various families such as flat space, $AdS$, conformally $AdS$ as arising from nonconformal branes, and more general nonrelativistic theories. We find a kind of universal near singularity behaviour independent of the dilaton potential, giving universal interrelations between the exponents defining the time behaviour near the cosmological singularity. More detailed analysis using a scaling ansatz enables finding various classes of cosmological backgrounds, recovering known examples such as the $AdS$ Kasner singularity as well finding as new ones. We give some comments on the dual field theory from this point of view.

On de Sitter future-past extremal surfaces and the "entanglement wedge"

We develop further the codim-2 future-past extremal surfaces stretching between the future and past boundaries in de Sitter space, discussed in previous work. We first make more elaborate the construction of such surfaces anchored at more general subregions of the future boundary, and stretching to equivalent subregions at the past boundary. These top-bottom symmetric future-past extremal surfaces cannot penetrate beyond a certain limiting surface in the Northern/Southern diamond regions: the boundary subregions become the whole boundary for this limiting surface. For multiple disjoint subregions, this construction leads to mutual information vanishing and strong subadditivity being saturated. We then discuss an effective codim-1 envelope surface arising from these codim-2 surfaces. This leads to analogs of the entanglement wedge and subregion duality for these future-past extremal surfaces in de Sitter space.

Schwarzschild de Sitter and extremal surfaces

We study extremal surfaces in the Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetime with real mass parameter. We find codim-2 timelike extremal surfaces stretching between the future and past boundaries that pass through the vicinity of the cosmological horizon in a certain limit. These are analogous to the surfaces in arXiv:1711.01107 [hep-th]. We also find spacelike surfaces that never reach the future/past boundaries but stretch indefinitely through the extended Penrose diagram, passing through the vicinity of the cosmological and Schwarzschild horizons in a certain limit. Further, these exhibit interesting structure for de Sitter space (zero mass) as well as in the extremal, or Nariai, limit.

de Sitter entropy as entanglement

We describe connected timelike codim-2 extremal surfaces stretching between the future and the past boundaries in the static patch coordinatization of de Sitter space. These are analogous to rotated versions of certain surfaces in the $AdS$ black hole. The existence of these surfaces via the $dS/CFT$ framework suggests the speculation that $dS_4$ is dual to two copies of ghost-like CFTs in a thermofield-double-type entangled state. In studies of entanglement in ghost systems and "ghost-spin" chains, we show that similar entangled states in two copies of ghost-spin ensembles always have positive norm and positive entanglement.
