Spinor Representation of Conformal Group and Gravitational Model

We consider spinor representations of the conformal group. The spacetime is constructed by the 15-dimensional vectors in the adjoint representation of $SO(2,4)$. On the spacetime, we construct a gravitational model that is invariant under local transformation.

Study of thickness dependent density in ultrathin water soluble polymer films

Density of the polyacrylamide ultrathin films has been studied using X-ray reflectivity technique. Two sources (one powder and another aqueous solution) of polyacrylamide were used to prepare spin coated films on silicon substrate. Light scattering measurements show that the polymer chains were unentangled in a concentrated (4 mg/ml) as well as in a dilute (2 mg/ml) solution prepared from the powder, whereas the solution (4 mg/ml) prepared by diluting the solution source shows entangled chain morphology. Three sets of films of different thicknesses were prepared using the three solutions by spin coating on silicon substrates. Comparison of X-ray reflectivity data for as prepared and dry films reveals that the shrinkage of the films decreases with increasing thickness. Average electron densities of the films were found to follow a trend of higher density for thinner films with a maximum increase of about 12% compared to the bulk. The densities of all the films irrespective of the nature of entanglement and concentration of their source were found to increase with spin speed of coating and attain saturation at higher speed. Absence of correlation between shrinkage and density data and the fact that the densities of all the films follow a master curve irrespective of their origin suggest that the higher density of the films result from the higher orientation of chains as a consequence of an interplay between stretching and stronger attractive interactions of polar nature.

Spectro-Polarimetric Observation of an Emerging Flux Region: Triggering Mechanism of Ellerman Bombs

High spatial resolution observation of an emerging flux region (EFR) was done using a vector magnetograph and a H-alpha Lyot filtergraph with Domeless Solar Telescope at Hida Observatory on October 22, 2006. In H-alpha wing images, we could see many Ellerman bombs (EBs) in the EFR. Two observation modes, slit scan and slit fixed, were performed with the vector magnetograph, along with H-alpha filtergraph. Using H-alpha wing images, we detected 12 EBs during slit scan observation period and 9 EBs during slit fixed observation period. With slit scan observation, we found that all the EBs were distributed in the area where the spatial gradient of vertical field intensity was large, which indicates the possibility of rapid topological change in magnetic field in the area of EBs. With slit fixed observation, we found that EBs were distributed in the areas of undulatory magnetic fields, both in vertical and horizontal components. This paper is the first to report the undulatory pattern in horizontal components of magnetic field, which is also evidence for emerging magnetic flux by Parker instability. These results allow us to confirm the association between EBs and emerging flux tubes. Three triggering mechanism of EBs is discussed with respect to emerging flux tubes: 9 out of 21 EBs occurred at the footpoints of emerging flux tubes, 8 out of 21 EBs occurred at the top of emerging flux tubes, and 4 out of 21 EBs occurred at unipolar region. Each case can be explained by magnetic reconnection in the low chromosphere.

Single crystal MgB2 with anisotropic superconducting properties

The discovery of superconductor in magnesium diboride MgB2 with high Tc (39 K) has raised some challenging issues; whether this new superconductor resembles a high temperature cuprate superconductor(HTS) or a low temperature metallic superconductor; which superconducting mechanism, a phonon- mediated BCS or a hole superconducting mechanism or other new exotic mechanism may account for this superconductivity; and how about its future for applications. In order to clarify the above questions, experiments using the single crystal sample are urgently required. Here we have first succeeded in obtaining the single crystal of this new MgB2 superconductivity, and performed its electrical resistance and magnetization measurements. Their experiments show that the electronic and magnetic properties depend on the crystallographic direction. Our results indicate that the single crystal MgB2 superconductor shows anisotropic superconducting properties and thus can provide scientific basis for the research of its superconducting mechanism and its applications.

Approximate Sum Rules of CKM Matrix Elements from Quasi-Democratic Mass Matrices

To extract sum rules of CKM matrix elements, eigenvalue problems for quasi-democratic mass matrices are solved in the first order perturbation approximation with respect to small deviations from the democratic limit. Mass spectra of up and down quark sectors and the CKM matrix are shown to have clear and distinctive hierarchical structures. Numerical analysis shows that the absolute values of calculated CKM matrix elements fit the experimental data quite well. The order of the magnitude of the Jarlskog parameter is estimated by the relation $|J| \approx \sqrt{2}(m_c/m_t + m_s/m_b)|V_{us}|^2|V_{cb}|/4$.
