Zr-based bulk metallic glass clamp cell for high-pressure inelastic neutron scattering

We report the fabrication and characterization of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (Zr-BMG) clamp cell designed for high-pressure inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. The INS spectra of the empty cell exhibit broad and featureless backgrounds, reflecting the amorphous structure of the Zr-BMG. Test measurements using a reference sample, CsFeCl$_{3}$, confirm that the neutron transmission of the Zr-BMG cell is significantly higher than that of a conventional monobloc CuBe clamp cell. These results demonstrate that the Zr-BMG clamp cell provides both enhanced neutron transparency and a clean background profile, thereby advancing high-pressure INS studies.

Modified Cross-Correlation for Efficient White-Beam Inelastic Neutron Scattering Spectroscopy

We describe a method of white-beam inelastic neutron scattering for improved measurement efficiency. The method consists of matrix inversion and selective extraction. The former is to resolve each incident energy component from the white-beam data, and the latter eliminates contamination by elastic components, which produce strong backgrounds that otherwise obfuscate the inelastic scattering components. In this method, the optimal experimental condition to obtain high efficiency will strongly depend on the specific aim of the individual experiments.

Emergence of magnetic long-range order in frustrated pyrochlore Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ with metal-insulator transition

In this study, we performed powder neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering measurements of frustrated pyrochlore Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which exhibits a metal-insulator transition at a temperature $T_{\rm MI}$ of 33 K. The diffraction measurements revealed that the pyrochlore has an antiferromagnetic long-range structure with propagation vector $\vec{q}_{0}$ of (0,0,0) and that it grows with decreasing temperature below 15 K. This structure was analyzed to be of the all-in all-out type, consisting of highly anisotropic Nd$^{3+}$ magnetic moments of magnitude $2.3\pm0.4$$μ_{\rm B}$, where $μ_{\rm B}$ is the Bohr magneton. The inelastic scattering measurements revealed that the Kramers ground doublet of Nd$^{3+}$ splits below $T_{\rm MI}$. This suggests the appearance of a static internal magnetic field at the Nd sites, which probably originates from a magnetic order consisting of Ir$^{4+}$ magnetic moments. Here, we discuss a magnetic structure model for the Ir order and the relation of the order to the metal-insulator transition in terms of frustration.

Universal magnetic structure of the half-magnetization phase in Cr-based spinels

Using an elastic neutron scattering technique under a pulsed magnetic field up to 30 T, we determined the magnetic structure in the half-magnetization plateau phase in the spinel CdCr$_2$O$_4$. The magnetic structure has a cubic $P4_3$32 symmetry, which is the same as that observed in HgCr$_2$O$_4$. This suggests that there is a universal field induced spin-lattice coupling mechanism at work in the Cr-based spinels.

Antiferromagnetic Order in Disorder-Induced Insulating Phase of SrRu_{1-x}Mn_xO_3 (0.4<x<0.6)

We have performed the powder neutron diffraction measurements on the solid solutions of SrRu_{1-x}Mn_xO_3, and found that the itinerant ferromagnetic order observed in pure SrRuO_3 changes into the C-type antiferromagnetic (AF) order with nearly localized d electrons in the intermediate Mn concentration between x=0.4 and 0.6. With increasing x, the AF moment is strongly enhanced from 1.1 mB (x=0.4) to 2.6 mB (x=0.6), which is accompanied by the elongation of the tetragonal c/a ratio. These results suggest that the substitution of Mn for Ru suppresses the itinerant character of the d electrons, and induces the superexchange interaction through the compression in the c plane. We have also found that the magnetic and transport properties observed in our tetragonal samples are quite similar to those of recently reported orthorhombic ones.

Revised crystal structure model of Li2NH by neutron powder diffraction

We performed neutron powder diffraction experiments on lithium imide Li2NH, and have proposed a revised crystal structure model. Li2NH has a face-centered cubic structure with a partially occupied hydrogen site. Of the possible crystal structure models that represent the obtained data, the model with F-43m symmetry having hydrogen atoms at the 16e site, in which only one hydrogen atom randomly occupies one of the four hydrogen positions around a nitrogen atom, is most probable. For this model, the distance between the nearest nitrogen and hydrogen atoms is 0.82(6)A, and the angle between H-N-H is 109.5deg., which are close to those of the lithium amide LiNH2, indicating that the structural circumstances around nitrogen and hydrogen are similar in Li2NH and LiNH2.

New Stacking Variations of the CE-type Structure in the Metal-Ordered Manganite YBaMn2O6

For the paramagnetic insulating phase in the metal-ordered manganite YBaMn2O6, the so-called CE-type of charge/orbital ordered state was observed within the monoclinic ab-plane, which is most commonly observed for the ordinary half doped manganites. However, TEM revealed a 4-fold periodicity along the c-axis, suggesting a new stacking pattern, where planes of the CE-type are built up according to the sequence [aabb...]. Interestingly, when th system enters into the antiferromagnetic state, this stacking pattern changes into [aaaa...] or [abab], suggesting close interplay between spins and orbitals. These features are discusses in terms of inherent structural alternation, i.e., the Y/Ba order along the c-axis.

Hole concentration induced transformation of the magnetic and orbital structure in Nd{1-x}Sr{x}MnO{3}

In order to study the magnetic and crystal structures in the Nd{1-x}Sr{x}MnO{3} system, we have peformed neutron diffraction measurements on melt-grown polycrystalline samples with 0.49 < x < 0.75. As a function of hole concentration x, the system shows systematic transformation of magnetic and crystal structures, which is consistently explained by the change of the character of Mn eg orbitals. With increasing x, the Nd{1-x}Sr{x}MnO{3} system exhibits a metallic ferromagnetic state, a metallic A-type AFM state, and then an insulating C-type AFM state. The CE-type charge-ordered AFM state was observed only in the vicinity of x=1/2, and it coexists with the A-type AFM state for x > 1/2, indicating that the energy difference between these two states is extremely small. We also found that the MnO{6} octahedra are apically compressed in the CE-type and A-type AFM states due to the d(3x2-r2)/d(3y2-r2) or d(x2-y2) orbital orderings, respectively, whereas they are apically elongated by the rod-type d(3z2-r2) orbital ordering in the C-type AFM state. In addition, a selective broadening of Bragg peaks was observed in the C-type AFM phase, and its x dependence strongly suggests the charge ordering for a commsurate value of the hole concentration at either x=3/4 or x=4/5.

Relation between crystal and magnetic structures of the layered manganites La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7 (0.30 =< x =< 0.50)

Comprehensive neutron-powder diffraction and Rietveld analyses were carried out to clarify the relation between the crystal and magnetic structures of La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7 (0.30 =< x =< 0.50). The Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion of Mn-O6 octahedra, i.e., the ratio of the averaged apical Mn-O bond length to the equatorial Mn-O bond length, is Delta_JT=1.042(5) at x=0.30, where the magnetic easy-axis at low temperature is parallel to the c axis. As the JT distortion becomes suppressed with increasing x, a planar ferromagnetic structure appears at x =< 0.32, which is followed by a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure at x =< 0.39. The canting angle between neighboring planes continuously increases from 0 deg (planar ferromagnet: 0.32 =< x < 0.39) to 180 deg (A-type AFM: x=0.48 where Delta_JT=1.013(5)). Dominance of the A-type AF structure with decrease of JT distortion can be ascribed to the change in the eg orbital state from d3z^2-r^2 to dx^2-y^2.

Neutron Scattering Studies on Magnetic Structure of the Double-Layered Manganite La_{2-2x}Sr_{1+2x}Mn_2O_7 ($0.30 \leq x \leq 0.50$)

Systematic powder diffraction studies have been carried out to establish the magnetic phase diagram of La_{2-2x}Sr_{1+2x}Mn_2O_7 (LSMO327) in a wide hall concentration range ($0.30 \leq x \leq 0.50$), using the HERMES diffractometer. LSMO327 exhibits a planar ferromagnetic structure for $0.32\leq x\leq 0.38$ at low temperatures. A finite canting angle between planar magnetic moments on neighboring planes starts appearing around $x\sim 0.40$ and reaches 180$^{\circ}$ (A-type antiferromagnet) at x=0.48. At x=0.30, on the other hand, the magnetic moments are aligned parallel to the c-axis.
