Zone-selection effect of photoelectron intensity distributions in a nonsymmorphic system RAlSi (R : Ce and Nd)

We investigate the electronic structures of noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetals RAlSi (R: Ce and Nd) using soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that the photoelectron intensity distribution observed in the momentum-resolved electronic bands is highly sensitive to the covered Brillouin zone (BZ) due to the zone-selection effect arising from the nonsymmorphic crystal structure of RAlSi. Our data reconstruct the photoelectron distributions varied according to the zone-selection effect, and reveal comprehensive information about the electronic band structures reproduced by band calculations. This detailed information enables us to experimentally trace the Weyl-cone dispersion throughout three-dimensional momentum space, providing valuable insights into the unique properties of RAlSi.

Laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with micrometer spatial resolution and detection of three-dimensional spin vector

We have developed a state-of-the-art apparatus for laser-based spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with micrometer spatial resolution (micro-SARPES). This equipment is achieved through the combination of a high-resolution photoelectron spectrometer, a 6-eV laser with high photon flux that is focused down to a few micrometers, a high-precision sample stage control system, and a double very-low-energy-electron-diffraction spin detector. The setup achieves an energy resolution of 1.5 (5.5) meV without (with) the spin detection mode, compatible with a spatial resolution better than 10 micrometers. This enables us to probe both spatially-resolved electronic structures and vector information of spin polarization in three dimensions. The performance of micro-SARPES apparatus is demonstrated by presenting ARPES and SARPES results from topological insulators and Au photolithography patterns on a Si (001) substrate.

Polarization-analyzed resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of the orbital excitations in KCuF3

We report a Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of orbital excitations in KCuF3 . By performing the polarization analysis of the scattered photons, we disclose that the excitation between the eg orbitals and the excitations from t2g to eg exhibit distinct polarization dependence. The polarization dependence of the respective excitations is interpreted based on a phenomenological consideration of the symmetry of the RIXS process that yields a necessary condition for observing the excitations. In addition, we show that the orbital excitations are dispersionless within our experimental resolution.

X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism of Valence Fluctuating State in Eu at High Magnetic Fields

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Eu L-edge (2p->5d) in two compounds exhibiting valence fluctuation, namely EuNi2(Si0.18Ge0.82)2 and EuNi2P2, has been investigated at pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 40 T. A distinct XMCD peak corresponding to the trivalent state (Eu3+; f6), whose ground state is nonmagnetic (J=0), was observed in addition to the main XMCD peak corresponding to the magnetic (J=7/2) divalent state (Eu2+; f7). This result indicates that the 5d electrons belonging to both valence states are magnetically polarized. It was also found that the ratio P5d(3+)/P5d(2+) between the polarization of 5d electrons (P5d) in the Eu3+ state and that of Eu2+ is ~ 0.1 in EuNi2(Si0.18Ge0.82)2 and ~ 0.3 in EuNi2P2 at magnetic fields where their macroscopic magnetization values are the same. The possible origin of the XMCD of the Eu3+ state and an explanation of the dependence of P5d(3+)/P5d(2+) on the material are discussed in terms of hybridization between the conduction electrons and the f electrons.

Frustration-driven successive metamagnetic transitions in TbB4

Resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction experiments on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice TbB$_4$ were carried out under strong pulsed magnetic fields up to 30 T. TbB$_4$ exhibits a multi-step magnetization process above 16 T when magnetic fields are applied along the c-axis. We examined the intensity of the 010 magnetic reflection as a function of magnetic field and found that the magnetization plateau phases are accompanied by large XY components of magnetic moments, in contrast to normal fractional magnetization plateau phases. The magnetization was calculated using a simple spin model deduced from the above result. Finally we propose that frustration is the key to understanding the observed multi-step magnetization.

Momentum-resolved charge excitations in high-Tc cuprates studied by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report a Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of high-Tc cuprates. Momentum-resolved charge excitations in the CuO2 plane are examined from parent Mott insulators to carrier-doped superconductors. The Mott gap excitation in undoped insulators is found to commonly show a larger dispersion along the [pi,pi] direction than the [pi,0] direction. On the other hand, the resonance condition displays material dependence. Upon hole doping, the dispersion of the Mott gap excitation becomes weaker and an intraband excitation appears as a continuum intensity below the gap at the same time. In the case of electron doping, the Mott gap excitation is prominent at the zone center and a dispersive intraband excitation is observed at finite momentum transfer.

High field x-ray diffraction study on a magnetic-field-induced valence transition in YbInCu4

We report the first high-field x-ray diffraction experiment using synchrotron x-rays and pulsed magnetic fields exceeding 30 T. Lattice deformation due to a magnetic-field-induced valence transition in YbInCu4 is studied. It has been found that the Bragg reflection profile at 32 K changes significantly at around 27 T due to the structural transition. In the vicinity of the transition field the low-field and the high-field phases are observed simultaneously as the two distinct Bragg reflection peaks: This is a direct evidence of the fact that the field-induced valence state transition is the first order phase transition. The field-dependence of the low-field-phase Bragg peak intensity is found to be scaled with the magnetization.

Mott gap excitations in twin-free YBa2Cu3O7-d (Tc = 93 K) studied by RIXS

Mott gap excitations in the high-Tc superconductor of the optimal doped YBa2Cu3O7-d (Tc = 93 K) have been studied by the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering method. Anisotropic spectra in the ab-plane are observed in a twin-free crystal. The excitation from the one-dimensional CuO chain is enhanced at 2 eV near the zone boundary of the b* direction, while the excitation from the CuO2 plane is broad at 1.5-4 eV and almost independent of the momentum transfer. Theoretical calculation based on the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Hubbard model reproduces the observed spectra by taking the different parameters of the on-site Coulomb energy. The fact of the Mott gap of the CuO chain site is much smaller than that of CuO2 plane site is observed for the first time.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of hole-doped manganites La1-xSrxMnO3 (x=0.2 and 0.4)

Electronic excitations near the Fermi energy in the hole doped manganese oxides (La1-xSrxMnO3, x=0.2 and 0.4) have been elucidated by using the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) method. A doping effect in the strongly correlated electron systems has been observed for the first time. The scattering spectra show that a salient peak appears in low energies indicating the persistence of the Mott gap. At the same time, the energy gap is partly filled by doping holes and the energy of the spectral weight shifts toward lower energies. The excitation spectra show little change in the momentum space as is in undoped LaMnO3, but the scattering intensities in the low energy excitations of x=0.2 are anisotropic as well as temperature dependent, which indicates a reminiscence of the orbital nature.

Dual structures in PZN-xPT ferroelectric relaxors

We performed x-ray diffraction studies on a series of (1-$x$)Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$-$x$PbTiO$_3$ (PZN-$x$PT) single crystals with different incident photon energies, and therefore different penetration depths. Our results show that outer-layers of $\sim 10$ to 50 $μ$m thick are present in all samples. The structure of those outer-layers is different from that of the inside of the crystals, by having much greater (rhombohedral) distortions. With increasing $x$, rhombohedral-type lattice distortions develop, both in the outer-layer and the inside.

Electric Field Effects on the Diffuse Scattering in PZN-8%PT

We report measurements of the neutron diffuse scattering from a single crystal of the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Zn_1/3Nb_2/3)O_3 doped with 8% PbTiO_3 (PZN-8%PT) for temperatures 100 K < T < 530 K and electric fields 0 kV/cm < E < 10 kV/cm. The diffuse scattering is strongly suppressed transverse to the (003) Bragg peak at 400 K for E = 2 kV/cm applied along the [001] direction. However, no change in the diffuse scattering is observed transverse to (300), even for field strengths up to 10 kV/cm. Thus the application of an external electric field in the tetragonal phase does not produce a macroscopically polarized state. This unusual behavior can be understood within the context of the Hirota et al. phase-shifted polar nanoregion (PNR) model of the relaxor diffuse scattering, since an electric field E oriented parallel to [001] would remove the shift of the nanoregions along [001] while preserving those along the orthogonal [100] direction.

The "devil's staircase" type phase transition in NaV2O5 under high pressure

The "devil's staircase" type phase transition in the quarter-filled spin-ladder compound NaV2O5 has been discovered at low temperature and high pressure by synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction. A large number of transitions are found to successively take place among higher-order commensurate phases with 2a * 2b * zc type superstructures. The observed temperature and pressure dependence of modulation wave number qc, defined by 1/z, is well reproduced by the Axial Next Nearest Neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model. The qc is suggested to reflect atomic displacements coupled with charge ordering in this system. The experimental fact implies that two competitive inter-layer interactions between the Ising spins, i.e., the nearest neighbor J1>0 (ferro) and the next nearest neighbor J2<0 (antiferro) along the c-axis, are intrinsic in this compound. A microscopic origin of the inter-layer interaction is not yet known; however, the nearest neighbor interaction J1>0 between the V2O5 layers is especially interesting. It is very surprising that the phase transition of such a complicated charge-lattice-spin coupled system NaV2O5 can be described by the simple ANNNI model.

X-ray Anomalous Scattering Study of a Charge-Ordered State in NaV2O5

Charge ordering of V4+ and V5+ in NaV2O5 has been studied by an X-ray diffraction technique using anomalous scattering near a vanadium K-absorption edge to critically enhance a contrast between the two ions. A dramatic energy dependence of the superlattice intensities is observed below Tc=35 K. Consequently, the charge ordering pattern is the zigzag-type ladders with the unit cell 2a*2b*4c, but not the chain-type originally proposed for the spin-Peierls state. Charge disproportionation suggested in our model as the average valence V^{4.5+-delta_c/2} is observed below T_C, showing continuous variation of delta_c as a function of temperature.
