Excitation of the lower-hybrid drift instability in the outflow of electron-only magnetic reconnection

We report experimental evidence for the lower-hybrid drift instability in the current sheet normal direction of electron-only magnetic reconnection. In our laser-driven capacitor-coil experiment, the system size ($\sim$3 ion skin depths) places it in the electron-only regime. Yet, Thomson scattering reveals out-of-plane electron drift oscillations at the local lower-hybrid frequency, with kinetic energy density reaching $\sim$18% of the local magnetic energy density. Linear theory with the measured parameters predicts more than ten e-folding times of growth, indicating that the instability reaches the nonlinear regime within the measurement window. Supported by particle-in-cell simulations, these results demonstrate the importance of ions in the dissipation and energy transfer in electron-only reconnection where their significance has not been previously recognized.

Kuiper Binary Object Formation

It has been observed that binary Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) exist contrary to theoretical expectations. Their creation presents problems to most current models. However, the inclusion of a third body (for example, one of the outer planets) may provide the conditions necessary for the formation of these objects. The presence of a third massive body not only helps to clear the primordial Kuiper Belt but can also result in long lived binary Kuiper belt objects. The gravitational interaction between the KBOs and the third body causes one of four effects; scattering into the Oort cloud, collisions with the growing protoplanets, formation of binary pairs, or creation of a single Kuiper belt object. Additionally, the initial location of the progenitors of the Kuiper belt objects also has a significant effect on binary formation.

A Bayesian Analysis of the Cepheid Distance Scale

We develop and describe a Bayesian statistical analysis to solve the surface brightness equations for Cepheid distances and stellar properties. Our analysis provides a mathematically rigorous and objective solution to the problem, including immunity from Lutz-Kelker bias. We discuss the choice of priors, show the construction of the likelihood distribution, and give sampling algorithms in a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach for efficiently and completely sampling the posterior probability distribution. Our analysis averages over the probabilities associated with several models rather than attempting to pick the `best model' from several possible models. Using a sample of thirteen Cepheids we demonstrate the method. We discuss diagnostics of the analysis and the effects of the astrophysical choices going into the model. We show that we can objectively model the order of Fourier polynomial fits to the light and velocity data. By comparison with theoretical models of Bono et al. (2001) we find that EU Tau and SZ Tau are overtone pulsators, most likely without convective overshoot. The period-radius and period-luminosity relations we obtain are shown to be compatible with those in the recent literature.
