Large-scale real-time signal processing in physics experiments: The ALICE TPC FPGA pipeline

For LHC Run 3, the ALICE Time Projection Chamber was upgraded to operate in continuous readout mode. Interaction rates of up to 50 kHz in Pb-Pb collisions require real-time processing of more than 3 TB/s of raw detector data. This requirement is met by a custom FPGA-based processing pipeline that performs the complete front-end data treatment fully in-stream, including common-mode correction, pedestal subtraction, ion-tail filtering, zero suppression, and dense data packing. A central element of the design is a highly parallel common-mode correction algorithm operating directly on the streaming data. It robustly identifies signal-free readout channels on a time-bin basis and applies pad-dependent scaling to compensate for local variations in capacitive coupling in the GEM readout. In combination with pedestal subtraction and ion-tail filtering, this enables accurate baseline restoration under extreme high-occupancy conditions, preventing signal loss while efficiently suppressing noise prior to zero suppression. The pipeline operates continuously at the full detector bandwidth and reduces the raw input rate to about 900 GB/s for Pb-Pb collisions at the target interaction rate. Overall, it represents a large-scale FPGA-based real-time signal-processing implementation for high-energy physics detector readout.

Performance of the electromagnetic and hadronic prototype segments of the ALICE Forward Calorimeter

We present the performance of a full-length prototype of the ALICE Forward Calorimeter (FoCal). The detector is composed of a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic sampling calorimeter with longitudinal and transverse segmentation (FoCal-E) of about 20$X_0$ and a hadronic copper-scintillating-fiber calorimeter (FoCal-H) of about 5$λ_{\rm int}$. The data were taken between 2021 and 2023 at the CERN PS and SPS beam lines with hadron (electron) beams up to energies of 350 (300) GeV. Regarding FoCal-E, we report a comprehensive analysis of its response to minimum ionizing particles across all pad layers. The longitudinal shower profile of electromagnetic showers is measured with a layer-wise segmentation of 1$X_0$. As a projection to the performance of the final detector in electromagnetic showers, we demonstrate linearity in the full energy range, and show that the energy resolution fulfills the requirements for the physics needs. Additionally, the performance to separate two-showers events was studied by quantifying the transverse shower width. Regarding FoCal-H, we report a detailed analysis of the response to hadron beams between 60 and 350 GeV. The results are compared to simulations obtained with a Geant4 model of the test beam setup, which in particular for FoCal-E are in good agreement with the data. The energy resolution of FoCal-E was found to be lower than 3% at energies larger than 100 GeV. The response of FoCal-H to hadron beams was found to be linear, albeit with a significant intercept that is about factor 2 larger than in simulations. Its resolution, which is non-Gaussian and generally larger than in simulations, was quantified using the FWHM, and decreases from about 16% at 100 GeV to about 11% at 350 GeV. The discrepancy to simulations, which is particularly evident at low hadron energies, needs to be further investigated.

Evidence for gradual evolution of low-energy fluctuations underlying the first-order structural and valence order in YbPd

The valence orders at $T_a=125$ K and $T_b=105$ K in the cubic compound YbPd have been investigated by $^{105}$Pd-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Significant decrease in the density of states at the Fermi energy below $T_a$ is evident from the measurement of nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$, suggesting that the instabilities of Fermi surface are associated with the transitions. Moreover we observed the unusual evolution of low-energy fluctuations toward the valence transition at $T_a$ behind its drastic first-order nature. The structural transition accompanying the valence order may occur as a result of cooperative effect of Fermi surface and valence instabilities.

Reference cross section measurements with ALICE in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at LHC

Cross sections of reference trigger processes were obtained based on beam property measurements in dedicated luminosity calibration experiments (van der Meer scans). These cross-sections are essential for absolute cross section determinations of physics processes. The reference cross sections are presented for pp collisions at two center of mass energies; 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV, and for Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV together with a discussion of the systematic uncertainty originating from beam intensity and rate measurement uncertainties.
