Series expansions in closed and open quantum many-body systems with multiple quasiparticle types

The established approach of perturbative continuous unitary transformations (pCUTs) constructs effective quantum many-body Hamiltonians as perturbative series that conserve the number of one quasiparticle type. We extend the pCUT method to similarity transformations - dubbed $\mathrm{pcst}^{\texttt{++}}$ - allowing for multiple quasiparticle types with complex-valued energies. This enlarges the field of application to closed and open quantum many-body systems with unperturbed operators corresponding to arbitrary superimposed ladder spectra. To this end, a generalized counting operator is combined with the quasiparticle generator for open quantum systems recently introduced by Schmiedinghoff and Uhrig (arXiv:2203.15532). The $\mathrm{pcst}^{\texttt{++}}$ then yields model-independent block-diagonal effective Hamiltonians and Lindbladians allowing a linked-cluster expansion in the thermodynamic limit similar to the conventional pCUT method. We illustrate the application of the $\mathrm{pcst}^{\texttt{++}}$ method by discussing representative closed, open, and non-Hermitian quantum systems.

Cooperative effects in dense cold atomic gases including magnetic dipole interactions

We theoretically investigate cooperative effects in cold atomic gases exhibiting both electric and magnetic dipole-dipole interactions, such as occurring for example in clouds of dysprosium atoms. We distinguish between the quantum degenerate case, where we take a many body physics approach and the quantum non-degenerate case, where we use the formalism of open system dynamics. For quantum non-degenerate gases, we illustrate the emergence of tailorable spin models in the high-excitation limit. In the low-excitation limit, we provide analytical and numerical results detailing the effect of magnetic interactions on the directionality of scattered light and characterize sub- and superradiant effects. For quantum degenerate gases, we study the interplay between sub- and superradiance effects and the fermionic or bosonic quantum statistics nature of the ensemble.

Projective cluster-additive transformation for quantum lattice models

We construct a projection-based cluster-additive transformation that block-diagonalizes wide classes of lattice Hamiltonians $\mathcal{H}=\mathcal{H}_0 +V$. Its cluster additivity is an essential ingredient to set up perturbative or non-perturbative linked-cluster expansions for degenerate excitation subspaces of $\mathcal{H}_0$. Our transformation generalizes the minimal transformation known amongst others under the names Takahashi's transformation, Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, des Cloiseaux effective Hamiltonian, canonical van Vleck effective Hamiltonian or two-block orthogonalization method. The effective cluster-additive Hamiltonian and the transformation for a given subspace of $\mathcal{H}$, that is adiabatically connected to the eigenspace of $\mathcal{H}_0$ with eigenvalue $e_0^n$, solely depends on the eigenspaces of $\mathcal{H}$ connected to $e_0^m$ with $e_0^m\leq e_0^n$. In contrast, other cluster-additive transformations like the multi-block orthognalization method or perturbative continuous unitary transformations need a larger basis. This can be exploited to implement the transformation efficiently both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. As a benchmark, we perform perturbative and non-perturbative linked-cluster expansions in the low-field ordered phase of the transverse-field Ising model on the square lattice for single spin-flips and two spin-flip bound-states.

Systematic Analysis of Crystalline Phases in Bosonic Lattice Models with Algebraically Decaying Density-Density Interactions

We propose a general approach to analyse diagonal ordering patterns in bosonic lattice models with algebraically decaying density-density interactions on arbitrary lattices. The key idea is a systematic search for the energetically best order on all unit cells of the lattice up to a given extent. Using resummed couplings we evaluate the energy of the ordering patterns in the thermodynamic limit using finite unit cells. We apply the proposed approach to the atomic limit of the extended Bose-Hubbard model on the triangular lattice at fillings $f=1/2$ and $f=1$. We investigate the ground-state properties of the antiferromagnetic long-range Ising model on the triangular lattice and determine a six-fold degenerate plain-stripe phase to be the ground state for finite decay exponents. We also probe the classical limit of the Fendley-Sengupta-Sachdev model describing Rydberg atom arrays. We focus on arrangements where the atoms are placed on the sites or links of the Kagome lattice. \changed{Our method provides a general framework to treat cristalline structures resulting from long-range interactions.

Absence of fractal quantum criticality in the quantum Newman-Moore model

The quantum phase transition between the low-field fracton phase with type-II fracton excitations and the high-field polarized phase is investigated in the two-dimensional self-dual quantum Newman-Moore model. We apply perturbative and numerical linked-cluster expansions to calculate the ground-state energy per site in the thermodynamic limit revealing a level crossing at the self-dual point. In addition, high-order series expansions of the relevant low-energy gaps are determined using perturbative continuous unitary transformations indicating no gap-closing. Our results therefore predict a first-order phase transition between the low-field fracton and the high-field polarized phase at the self-dual point.

Dynamic structure factor of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model in large magnetic fields

We investigate the dynamic structure factor of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field by applying perturbative continuous unitary transformations about the high-field limit. One- and two-quasiparticle properties of the dressed elementary spin-flip excitations of the high-field polarized phase are calculated which account for most of the spectral weight in the dynamic structure factor. We discuss the evolution of spectral features in these quasiparticle sectors in terms of one-quasiparticle dispersions, two-quasiparticle continua, the formation of antibound states, and quasiparticle decay. In particular, a comparably strong spectral feature above the upper edge of the upmost two-quasiparticle continuum represents three antibound states which form due to nearest-neighbor density-density interactions.

Continuously varying critical exponents in long-range quantum spin ladders

We investigate the quantum-critical behavior between the rung-singlet phase with hidden string order and the Néel phase with broken $SU(2)$-symmetry on quantum spin ladders with algebraically decaying unfrustrated long-range Heisenberg interactions. Combining perturbative continuous unitary transformations (pCUT) with a white-graph expansion and Monte Carlo simulations yields high-order series expansions of energies and observables in the thermodynamic limit about the isolated rung-dimer limit. The breakdown of the rung-singlet phase allows to determine the critical line and the entire set of critical exponents as a function of the decay exponent of the long-range interaction. A non-trivial regime of continuously varying critical exponents as well as long-range mean-field behavior is demonstrated reminiscent of the long-range transverse-field Ising model.

Scaling at quantum phase transitions above the upper critical dimension

The hyperscaling relation and standard finite-size scaling (FSS) are known to break down above the upper critical dimension due to dangerous irrelevant variables. We establish a coherent formalism for FSS at quantum phase transitions above the upper critical dimension following the recently introduced Q-FSS formalism for thermal phase transitions. Contrary to long-standing belief, the correlation sector is affected by dangerous irrelevant variables. The presented formalism recovers a generalized hyperscaling relation and FSS form. Using this new FSS formalism, we determine the full set of critical exponents for the long-range transverse-field Ising chain in all criticality regimes ranging from the nearest-neighbor to the long-range mean field regime. For the same model, we also explicitly confirm the effect of dangerous irrelevant variables on the characteristic length scale.

Competing topological orders in three dimensions: X-cube versus toric code

We study the competition between two different topological orders in three dimensions by considering the X-cube model and the three-dimensional toric code. The corresponding Hamiltonian can be decomposed into two commuting parts, one of which displays a self-dual spectrum. To determine the phase diagram, we compute the high-order series expansions of the ground-state energy in all limiting cases. Apart from the topological order related to the toric code and the fractonic order related to the X-cube model, we found two new phases which are adiabatically connected to classical limits with nontrivial sub-extensive degeneracies. All phase transitions are found to be first order.

Linked Cluster Expansions via Hypergraph Decompositions

We propose a hypergraph expansion which facilitates the direct treatment of quantum spin models with many-site interactions via perturbative linked cluster expansions. The main idea is to generate all relevant subclusters and sort them into equivalence classes essentially governed by hypergraph isomorphism. Concretely, a reduced König representation of the hypergraphs is used to make the equivalence relation accessible by graph isomorphism. During this procedure we determine the embedding factor for each equivalence class, which is used in the final resummation in order to obtain the final result. As an instructive example we calculate the ground-state energy and a particular excitation gap of the plaquette Ising model in a transverse field on the three-dimensional cubic lattice.

Quantum phase transitions in the $K$-layer Ising toric code

We investigate the quantum phase diagram of the $K$-layer Ising toric code corresponding to $K$ layers of two-dimensional toric codes coupled by Ising interactions. While for small Ising interactions the system displays $\mathbb{Z}_2^K$ topological order originating from the toric codes in each layer, the system shows $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order in the high-Ising limit. The latter is demonstrated for general $K$ by deriving an effective low-energy model in $K^{\rm th}$-order degenerate perturbation theory, which is given as an effective anisotropic single-layer toric code in terms of collective pseudo-spins 1/2 refering to the two ground states of isolated Ising chain segments. For the specific cases $K=3$ and $K=4$ we apply high-order series expansions to determine the gap series in the low- and high-Ising limit. Extrapolation of the elementary energy gaps gives convincing evidence that the ground-state phase diagram consists of a single quantum critical point in the 3d Ising* universality class for both $K$ separating both types of topological order, which is consistent with former findings for the bilayer Ising toric code.

Phase synchronization in dissipative non-Hermitian coupled quantum systems

We study the interplay between non-Hermitian dynamics and phase synchronization in a system of $\mathcal{N}$ bosonic modes coupled to an auxiliary mode. The linearity of the evolution in such a system allows for the derivation of fully analytical results for synchronization conditions. In contrast, analysis at the level of phase dynamics, followed by a transformation to a collective basis allows a complete reduction to an all-to-all coupled Kuramoto model with known analytical solutions. We provide analytical and numerical solutions for systems ranging from a few modes to the macroscopic limit of large $\mathcal{N}$ in the presence of inhomogeneous frequency broadening and test the robustness of phase synchronization under the action of external noise.

High-order series expansion of non-Hermitian quantum spin models

We investigate the low-energy physics of non-Hermitian quantum spin models with $PT$-symmetry. To this end we consider the one-dimensional Ising chain and the two-dimensional toric code in a non-Hermitian staggered field. For both systems dual descriptions in terms of non-Hermitian staggered Ising interactions in a conventional transverse field exist. We perform high-order series expansions about the high- and low-field limit for both systems to determine the ground-state energy per site and the one-particle gap. The one-dimensional non-Hermitian Ising chain is known to be exactly solvable. Its ground-state phase diagram consists of second-order quantum phase transitions, which can be characterized by logarithmic singularities of the second derivative of the ground-state energy and, in the symmetry-broken phase, the gap closing of the low-field gap. In contrast, the gap closing from the high-field phase is not accessible perturbatively due to the complex energy and the occurrence of exceptional lines in the high-field gap expression. For the two-dimensional toric code in a non-Hermitian staggered field we study the quantum robustness of the topologically ordered phase by the gap closing of the low-field gap. We find that the well-known second-order quantum phase transition of the toric code in a uniform field extends into a large portion of the non-Hermitian parameter space. However, the series expansions become unreliable for a dominant anti-Hermitian field. Interestingly, the analysis of the high-field gap reveals the potential presence of an intermediate region.

Quantum-critical properties of the long-range transverse-field Ising model from quantum Monte Carlo simulations

The quantum-critical properties of the transverse-field Ising model with algebraically decaying interactions are investigated by means of stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo, on both the one-dimensional linear chain and the two-dimensional square lattice. We extract the critical exponents $ν$ and $β$ as a function of the decay exponent of the long-range interactions. For ferromagnetic Ising interactions, we resolve the limiting regimes known from field theory, ranging from the nearest-neighbor Ising to the long-range Gaussian universality classes, as well as the intermediate regime with continuously varying critical exponents. In the long-range Gaussian regime, we treat the effect of dangerous irrelevant variables on finite-size scaling forms. For antiferromagnetic and therefore competing Ising interactions, the stochastic series expansion algorithm displays growing auto-correlation times leading to a reduced performance. Nevertheless, our results are consistent with the nearest-neighbor Ising universality for all investigated interaction ranges both on the linear chain and the square lattice.

Low-energy effective theory of the toric code model in a parallel field

We determine analytically the phase diagram of the toric code model in a parallel magnetic field which displays three distinct regions. Our study relies on two high-order perturbative expansions in the strong- and weak-field limit, as well as a large-spin analysis. Calculations in the topological phase establish a quasiparticle picture for the anyonic excitations. We obtain two second-order transition lines that merge with a first-order line giving rise to a multicritical point as recently suggested by numerical simulations. We compute the values of the corresponding critical fields and exponents that drive the closure of the gap. We also give the one-particle dispersions of the anyonic quasiparticles inside the topological phase.

Quantum criticality and excitations of a long-range anisotropic $XY$-chain in a transverse field

The critical breakdown of a one-dimensional quantum magnet with long-range interactions is studied by investigating the high-field polarized phase of the anisotropic XY model in a transverse field for the ferro- and antiferromagnetic case. While for the limiting case of the isotropic long-range XY model we can extract the elementary one quasi-particle dispersion analytically and calculate two quasi-particle excitation energies quantitatively in a numerical fashion, for the long-range Ising limit as well as in the intermediate regime we use perturbative continuous unitary transformations on white graphs in combination with classical Monte Carlo simulations for the graph embedding to extract high-order series expansions in the thermodynamic limit. This enables us to determine the quantum-critical breakdown of the high-field polarized phase by analyzing the gap-closing including associated critical exponents and multiplicative logarithmic corrections. In addition, for the ferromagnetic isotropic XY model we determined the critical exponents $z$ and $ν$ analytically by a bosonic quantum-field theory.

Quantum critical phase transition between two topologically-ordered phases in the Ising toric code bilayer

We demonstrate that two toric code layers on the square lattice coupled by an Ising interaction display two distinct phases with intrinsic topological order. The second-order quantum phase transition between the weakly-coupled $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ and the strongly-coupled $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order can be described by the condensation of bosonic quasiparticles from both sides and belongs to the 3d Ising$^*$ universality class. This can be shown by an exact duality transformation to the transverse-field Ising model on the square lattice, which builds on the existence of an extensive number of local $\mathbb{Z}_2$ conserved parities. These conserved quantities correspond to the product of two adjacent star operators on different layers. Notably, we show that the low-energy effective model derived about the limit of large Ising coupling is given by an effective single-layer toric code in terms of the conserved quantities of the Ising toric code bilayer. The two topological phases are further characterized by the topological entanglement entropy which serves as a non-local order parameter.

Effects of domain walls in bilayer graphene in an external magnetic field

We investigate bilayer graphene systems with layer switching domain walls separating the two energetically equivalent Bernal stackings in the presence of an external magnetic field. To this end we calculate quantum transport and local densities of three microscopic models for a single domain wall: a hard wall, a defect due to shear, and a defect due to tension. The quantum transport calculations are performed with a recursive Green's function method. Technically, we discuss an explicit algorithm for the separation of a system into subsystems for the recursion and we present an optimization of the well known iteration scheme for lead self-energies for sparse chain couplings. We find strong physical differences for the three different types of domain walls in the integer quantum Hall regime. For a domain wall due to shearing of the upper graphene layer there is a plateau formation in the magnetoconductance for sufficiently wide defect regions. For wide domain walls due to tension in the upper graphene layer there is only an approximate plateau formation with fluctuations of the order of the elementary conuctance quantum $σ_0$. A direct transition between stacking regions like for the hard wall domain wall shows no plateau formation and is therefore not a good model for either of the previously mentioned extended domain walls.
