Multi-wavelength study of a young open cluster NGC 7419

Using UBVRI Halpha CCD photometric observations and the archival NIR and X-ray data, we have carried out a multi-wavelength study of a young star cluster NGC 7419. An age of 22.5+/-3.0 Myr and a distance of 3230^{+330}_{-430} pc are derived for the cluster with a higher value of color excess ratio E(U-B)/E(B-V) than the normal one. There is an evidence for mass segregation in this dynamically relaxed cluster with mass function slope is in agreement with the Salpeter value. NIR and Halpha excess support the existence of a young (< 2 Myr) stellar population of Herbig Ae/Be stars (> 3.0 M_sun) indicating a second episode of star formation in the cluster region. Using XMM-Newton observations, we found several X-ray sources in the cluster region but none of the Herbig Ae/Be stars is detected in X-rays. We compare the distribution of upper limits for Herbig Ae/Be stars with the X-ray distribution functions of the T-Tauri and the Herbig Ae/Be stars from previous studies, and found that the X-ray emission level of these Herbig Ae/Be stars is not more than L_X ~5.2 x 10^{30} erg/s, which is not significantly higher than for the T-Tauri stars. Therefore, X-ray emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars could be the result of either unresolved companion stars or a process similar to T-Tauri stars. We report an extended X-ray emission from the cluster region NGC 7419, with a total L_X estimate of ~ 1.8 x 10^31 erg/s/arcmin^2. Investigation of dust and CO map of 1 degree region around the cluster indicates the presence of a foreground dust cloud which is most likely associated with star forming region Sh2-154. This cloud harbors uniformly distributed pre main sequence stars (0.1-2.0M_sun) and the star formation in this cloud depend mostly upon the primordial fragmentation.

A study of X-ray flares - I. Active late-type dwarfs

We present temporal and spectral characteristics of X-ray flares observed from six late-type G-K active dwarfs (V368 Cep, XI Boo, IM Vir, V471 Tau, CC Eri and EP Eri) using data from observations with the XMM-Newton observatory. All the stars were found to be flaring frequently and altogether a total of seventeen flares were detected above the ``quiescent'' state X-ray emission which varied from 0.5 to 8.3 x 10^{29} erg/s. The largest flare was observed in a low activity dwarf XI Boo with a decay time of 10 ks and ratio of peak flare luminosity to ``quiescent'' state luminosity of 2. We have studied the spectral changes during the flares by using colour-colour diagram and by detailed spectral analysis during the temporal evolution of the flares. The exponential decay of the X-ray light curves, and time evolution of the plasma temperature and emission measure are similar to those observed in compact solar flares. We have derived the semiloop lengths of flares based on the hydrodynamic flare model. The size of the flaring loops is found to be less than the stellar radius. The hydrodynamic flare decay analysis indicates the presence of sustained heating during the decay of most flares.

Chandra High Resolution X-ray Spectroscopy of AM Her

We present the results of high resolution spectroscopy of the prototype polar AM Herculis observed with Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating. The X-ray spectrum contains hydrogen-like and helium-like lines of Fe, S, Si, Mg, Ne and O with several Fe L-shell emission lines. The forbidden lines in the spectrum are generally weak whereas the hydrogen-like lines are stronger suggesting that emission from a multi-temperature, collisionally ionized plasma dominates. The helium-like line flux ratios yield a plasma temperature of 2 MK and a plasma density 1 - 9 x10^12 cm^-3, whereas the line flux ratio of Fe XXVI to Fe XXV gives an ionization temperature of 12.4 +1.1 -1.4 keV. We present the differential emission measure distribution of AM Her whose shape is consistent with the volume emission measure obtained by multi-temperature APEC model. The multi-temperature plasma model fit to the average X-ray spectrum indicates the mass of the white dwarf to be ~1.15 M_sun. From phase resolved spectroscopy, we find the line centers of Mg XII, S XVI, resonance line of Fe XXV, and Fe XXVI emission modulated by a few hundred to 1000 km/s from the theoretically expected values indicating bulk motion of ionized matter in the accretion column of AM Her. The observed velocities of Fe XXVI ions are close to the expected shock velocity for a 0.6 M_sun white dwarf. The observed velocity modulation is consistent with that expected from a single pole accreting binary system.

Physical property characterization of Fe-tube encapsulated and vacuum annealed bulk MgB2

We report phase formation, and detailed study of magnetization and resistivity under magnetic field of MgB2 polycrystalline bulk samples prepared by Fe-tube encapsulated and vacuum (10-5 torr) annealed (750 0C) route. Zero-field-cooled magnetic susceptibility (cZFC) measurements exhibited sharp transition to superconducting state with a sizeable diamagnetic signal at 39 K (Tc). The measured magnetization loops of the samples, despite the presence of flux jumps, exhibited a stable current density (Jc) of around 2.4 x 105 A/cm2 in up to 2 T (Tesla) field and at temperatures (T) up to 10 K. The upper critical field is estimated from resistivity measurements in various fields and shows a typical value of 8 T at 21 K. Further, cFC measurements at an applied field of 0.1 T reveal paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME) that is briefly discussed.

Fluxiod jumps coupled high critical current density of nano-Co3O4 doped MgB2

Polycrystalline MgB2 samples with 0, 2, 4 and 6 percent added nano-Co3O4 being synthesized by vacuum (10-5 Torr) annealing at 750 0C for three hours each are found to be nearly single phase with presence of only a small quantity of Mg/MgO in pristine sample and in addition the Co2O3 in doped compounds. All the samples exhibited clear and sharp diamagnetic transitions at around 38 K, in Zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetic susceptibility measurements with sizeable signal. The Field cooled (FC) measurements though having sharp transitions, but showed a very small signal, indicating high level of pinning centers in these samples. Further some of the doped samples exhibited Paramagnetic-Meissner-Effect (PME) in applied field of 5 Oe. The critical current density (Jc), being estimated by invoking Bean model for the pristine compound increase by nearly an order of magnitude for 2 and 4 percent nano-Co3O4 doping and later the same decreases sharply for 6 percent sample at nearly all studied temperatures and applied fields. Further the increased Jc (~ 10^8 A/cm2) is coupled with fluxiod jumps (T = 20 K and H = 1 T). Fluxiod Jumps are not seen in relatively low Jc pristine or 6 percent sample. This means the fluxiod-jumps are intrinsic only to the high Jc samples.

Phase formation and superconductivity of Fe-tube encapsulated and vacuum annealed MgB2

We report optimization of the synthesis parameters viz. heating temperature (TH), and hold time (thold) for vacuum (10-5 torr) annealed and LN2 (liquid nitrogen) quenched MgB2 compound. These are single-phase compounds crystallizing in the hexagonal structure (space group P6/mmm) at room temperature. Our XRD results indicated that for phase-pure MgB2, the TH for 10-5 torr annealed and LN2 quenched samples is 750 0C. The right stoichiometry i.e., MgB2 of the compound corresponding to 10-5 Torr and TH of 750 0C is found for the hold time (thold) of 2.30 hours. With varying thold from 1- 4 hours at fixed TH (750 0C) and vacuum (10-5 torr), the c-lattice parameter decreases first and later increases with thold (hours) before a near saturation, while the a-lattice parameter first increase and later decreases beyond thold of 2.30 hours. c/a ratio versus thold plot showed an inverted bell shape curve, touching the lowest value of 1.141 which is reported value for perfect stoichiometry of MgB2. The optimized stoichimetric MgB2 compound exhibited superconductivity at 39.2 K with transition width of 0.6 K. In conclusion, the synthesis parameters for phase pure stoichimetric vacuum annealed MgB2 compound are optimized and are compared with widely reported Ta tube encapsulated samples.

Study of Fe K-alpha lines in Non-magnetic Cataclysmic Variables using Chandra HEG data

Results from a study of Fe K-alpha emission lines for a sample of six non-magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) using the high resolution X-ray data from the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) are presented. Two of the sources, SS Cyg and U Gem are observed in both quiescent and outburst states whereas V603 Aql, V426 Oph, WX Hyi and SU UMa are observed only in quiescence. The fluorescent Fe line is prominent in V603 Aql, V426 Oph and SS Cyg during quiescence indicating the presence of a conspicuous reflection component in these sources. The observed equivalent width of the fluorescent Fe line is consistent with reflection from a white dwarf surface that subtends 2pi solid angle at the X-ray source. During the outburst in SS Cyg, the fluorescent line is red-shifted by about 2300 km/s. The Fe XXV triplet at 6.7 keV is found to be dominant in all sources. The value of the G-ratio derived from the Fe XXV triplet indicates that the plasma is in collisional ionization equilibrium during the quiescent state. The Fe XXV line is significantly broadened in U Gem and SS Cyg during the outbursts compared to quiescence, indicating the presence of a high velocity material near the white dwarf during the outburst. The ratio of Fe XXVI/XXV indicates a higher ionization temperature during quiescence than in outburst in U Gem and SS Cyg.

Unravelling the nature of HD 81032 - a new RS CVn Binary

BVR photometric and quasi-simultaneous optical spectroscopic observations of the star HD 81032 have been carried out during the years 2000 - 2004. A photometric period of $18.802 \pm 0.07$ d has been detected for this star. A large group of spots with a migration period of $7.43 \pm 0.07$ years is inferred from the first three years of the data. H$α$ and Ca II H and K emissions from the star indicate high chromospheric activity. The available photometry in the BVRIJHK bands is consistent with spectral type of K0 IV previously found for this star. We have also examined the spectral energy distribution of HD 81032 for the presence of an infrared colour excess using the 2MASS JHK and IRAS photometry, but found no significant excess in any band abovethe normal values expected for a star with this spectral type. We have also analyzed the X-ray emission properties of this star using data obtained by the ROSAT X-ray observatory during its All-Sky Survey phase. An X-ray flare of about 12 hours duration was detected during the two days of X-ray coverage obtained for this star. Its X-ray spectrum, while only containing 345 counts, is inconsistent with a single-temperature component solar-abundance coronal plasma model, but implies either the presence of two or more plasma components, non-solar abundances, or a combination of both of these properties. All of the above properties of HD 81032 suggest that it is a newly identified, evolved RS CVn binary.

A comparison of the resistivity behavior of MgB2, AlB2 and AgB2 systems

Measurements have been performed of the resistivity of the samples of MgB2, AlB2 and AgB2. The samples show presence of impurities. Analyzing the data in terms of the impurity scattering, electron-phonon scattering, and weak localization it has been found that the AlB2 (AgB2) sample involves maximum (minimum) effect of the impurity, electron-phonon interaction and weak localization.

Optical and X-ray studies of chromospherically active stars : FR Cancri, HD 95559 and LO Pegasi

We present a multiwavelength study of three chromospherically active stars, namely FR Cnc (= BD +16\degr 1753), HD 95559 and LO Peg (=BD +22\degr 4409), including newly obtained optical photometry, low-resolution optical spectroscopy for FR Cnc, as well as archival IR and X-ray observations. The BVR photometry carried out during the years 2001 - 2004 has found significant photometric variability to be present in all three stars. For FR Cnc, a photometric period $0.8267 \pm 0.0004 \rm {d}$ has been established. The strong variation in the phase and amplitude of the FR Cnc light curves when folded on this period implies the presence of evolving and migrating spots or i spot groups on its surface. Two independent spots with migration periods of 0.97 and 0.93 years respectively are inferred. The photometry of HD 95559 suggests the formation of a spot (group) during the interval of our observations. We infer the existence of two independent spots or groups in the photosphere of LO Peg, one of which has a migration period of 1.12 years. The optical spectroscopy of FR Cnc carried out during 2002-2003, reveals the presence of strong and variable Ca II H and K, H$_β$ and $H_α$ emission features indicative of high level of chromospheric activity. The value of 5.3 for the ratio of the excess emission in $H_α$ to $H_β$, $E_{H_α}/E_{H_β}$, suggests that the chromospheric emission may arise from an extended off-limb region. We have also analyzed archival X-ray observations of HD 95559 and LO Peg carried out by with the ROSAT observatory. The best fit models to their X-ray spectra imply the presence of two coronal plasma components of differing temperatures and with sub-solar metal abundances.

X-Ray Emission and Optical Polarization of V1432 Aquilae: An Asynchronous Polar

A detailed analysis of X-ray data from ROSAT, ASCA, XMM and RXTE for the asynchronous polar V1432 Aql along with Stokes polarimetry data from SAAO, is presented. Power spectra from long-baseline ROSAT data show a spin period of 12150s along with several system related frequency components. However, the second harmonic of the spin period dominates power spectrum in the XMM data. For the optical circular polarization, the dominant period corresponds to half the spin period. The ROSAT data can be explained as due to accretion onto two hot spots that are not anti-podal. The variations seen in the optical polarization and the ASCA and XMM data suggest the presence of at least three accretion foot prints on the white dwarf surface. Two spectral models, a multi-temperature plasma and a photo-ionized plasma model, are used for spectral study. The RXTE PCA data are used to constrain the white dwarf mass to 1.2$\pm$0.1 M_odot using the multi-temperature plasma model. A strong soft X-ray excess (<0.8 keV) in the XMM MOS data is well modeled by a blackbody component having a temperature of 80-90 eV. The plasma emission lines seen at 6.7 and 7.0 keV are well fitted using the multi-temperature plasma model, however an additional Gaussian is needed for the 6.4 keV line. The multi-temperature plasma model requires a homogeneous absorber fully covering the source and a partial absorber covering 65% of the source. The photo-ionized plasma model, with a range of Fe column densities, gives a slightly better overall fit and fits all emission lines. The presence of a strong blackbody component, a spin period of 12150s, modulation of the 6.4 keV line flux with spin period, and a very hard X-ray component suggest that V1432 Aql is a polar with X-ray spectral properties similar to that of a soft intermediate polar.

Impact of Zn substitution on phase formation and superconductivity of Bi1.6Pb0.4 Sr2Ca2Cu3-xZnxO10 with x = 0.0, 0.015, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09 and 0.12

Samples of series Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3-xZnxO10 with x = 0.0, 0.015, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09 and 0.12 are synthesized by solid-state reaction route. All the samples crystallize in tetragonal structure with majority (> 90%) of Bi-2223 (Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10) phase (c-lattice parameter ~ 36 A0). The proportion of Bi-2223 phase decreases slightly with an increase in x. The lattice parameters a and c of main phase (Bi-2223) do not change significantly with increasing x. Superconducting critical transition temperature (Tc) decreases with x as evidenced by both resistivity [(T)] and AC magnetic susceptibility [(T)] measurements. Interestingly the decrement of Tc is not monotonic and the same saturates at around 96 K for x > 0.06. In fact Tc decreases fast (~10K/at%) for x = 0.015 and 0.03 samples and later nearly saturates for higher x values. Present results of Zn doping in Bi-2223 system are compared with Zn doped other HTSC (High temperature superconducting) systems, namely the RE-123 (REBa2Cu3O7) and La-214 ((La,Sr)2CuO4).

Periodicities In The X-Ray Intensity Variations of TV Columbae: An Intermediate Polar

We present results from a temporal analysis of the longest and the most sensitive X-ray observations of TV Columbae--an intermediate polar. The observations were carried out with the RXTE PCA, ROSAT PSPC, and ASCA. Data were analyzed using a 1-dimensional CLEAN and Bayesian algorithms. The presence of a nearly sinusoidal modulation due to the spin of the white dwarf is seen clearly in all the data, confirming the previous reports based on the EXOSAT data. An improved period of 1909.7+/-2.5s is derived for the spin from the RXTE data. The binary period of 5.5hr is detected unambiguously in X-rays for the first time. Several side-bands due to the interaction of these periods are observed in the power spectra, thereby suggesting contributions from both the disk-fed and the stream-fed accretion for TV Col. The accretion disk could perhaps be precessing as side-bands due to the influence of 4 day period on the orbital period are seen. The presence of a significant power at certain side-bands of the spin frequency indicates that the emission poles are asymmetrically located. The strong power at the orbital side-bands seen in both the RXTE and ROSAT data gives an indication for an absorption site fixed in the orbital frame. Both the spin and the binary modulation are found to be energy-dependent. Increased hardness ratio during a broad dip in the intensity at binary phase of 0.75--1.0 confirms the presence of a strong attenuation due to additional absorbers probably from an impact site of the accretion stream with the disk or magnetosphere. Hardness ratio variations and the energy dependent modulation depth during the spin modulation can be explained by partially covered absorbers in the path of X-ray emission region in the accretion stream.

Coronae of Cool Stars

We present preliminary results of grating observations of YY Mensae and V824 Arae by Chandra and XMM-Newton. Spectral features are presented in the context of the emission measure distributions, the coronal abundances, and plasma electron densities. In particular, we observe a coronal N/C enhancement in YY Men believed to reflect the photospheric composition (CN cycle). Finally, we interpret line broadening in YY Men as Doppler thermal broadening in its very hot corona.

Hard X-ray Observations of Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables

Hard X-ray light curves and spectral parameters from our analysis of X-ray data of five AM Her type systems - V2301 Oph, V1432 Aql, EP Draconis, GG Leonis, V834 Cen, and one intermediate polar - TV Col, observed using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite are presented. A new improved ephemeris has been derived for V2301 Oph using the mid-eclipse timings. Average intensity variations, without any change of shape of the light curve or hardness ratio, are observed on timescales of a few days to a few months in V2301 Oph. V1432 Aql shows erratic variations on a timescale of a day, at least 2 sharp dips near orbital phases 0.35 and 0.5, and a total eclipse. Hard X-ray eclipses are also reported in EP Dra and GG Leo. V834 Cen shows intensity variations on yearly timescale and is found to be in a low state in 2002. In TV Col, a binary orbital modulation at 5.5h, in addition to the spin period of 1910s, is reported for the first time. Maximum spectral temperatures in Polars have been determined and used to estimate the masses of the white dwarfs.

Soft X-ray properties of a high redshift sample of QSOs observed with ROSAT

In order to study systematically the soft X-ray emission of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) at medium to high redshifts, we have analyzed ROSAT PSPC and HRI data of QSOs at 0.26 3.0), one of which is a narrow-line QSO - a high luminosity version of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. The average photon index ( ) is 2.40+/-0.09 (with a dispersion of 0.57) in the 0.1-2 keV band. The average QSO spectra in four redshift bins flatten from an average photon index of ~ 2.53 at 0.25 < z < 1 to ~ 2 at 2 < z < 3.4. The flattening of the average photon index can be understood in terms of the redshift effect of the mean intrinsic QSO spectrum consisting of two components - a soft X-ray excess and a power-law component. We have also studied optical spectra of 12 of the 22 QSOs.

A 10-day ASCA Observation of the Narrow-line Seyfert~1 galaxy IRAS 13224-3809

(Abridged) We present an analysis of a 10-day continuous ASCA observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224-3809. The soft (0.7-1.3 keV) and hard (1.3-10 keV) X-ray band light curves binned to 5000s reveal trough-to-peak variations by a factor >25 and 20, respectively. The light curves in the soft and hard bands are strongly correlated without any significant delay. However, this correlation is not entirely due to changes in the power-law flux alone but also due to changes in the soft X-ray hump emission above the power law. The presence of a soft X-ray hump below 2 keV, previously detected in ROSAT and ASCA data, is confirmed. Time resolved spectroscopy using daily sampling reveals changes in the power-law slope, with Gamma in the range 1.74-2.47, however, day-to-day variations in Gamma are not significant. The Soft hump emission is found to dominate the observed variability on a timescale of a week, but on shorter timescales (20000s) the power-law component appears to dominate the observed variability. Flux resolved spectroscopy reveals that at high flux levels the power law becomes steeper and the soft hump more pronounced. The steepening of the photon index with the fluxes in the soft and hard bands can be understood in the framework of disk/corona models in which accretion disk is heated by viscous dissipation as well as by reprocessing of hard X-rays following an X-ray flare resulting from coronal dissipation through magnetic reconnection events.

Optical and X-ray characteristics of a newly discovered narrow-line QSO : RX J1334.2+3759

We report the discovery of a narrow-line QSO (NLQSO) RX J1334.2+3759 with a steep soft X-ray spectrum. Soft X-ray emission from the NLQSO is highly variable. Changes in the intensity by a factor of about 2 have been detected in the ROSAT PSPC observations of RX J1334.2+3759 on time scales of 20000-40000s. Rapid variability events have also been observed from RX J1334.2+3759. The most extreme variable event has Delta L/Delta t = (1.95+/-1.02)E42 erg/s/s corresponding to a change in intensity by a factor of about 4 within 400s. The PSPC spectra of the NLQSO can be well represented by a power-law of photon index 3.8, modified by an absorbing column local to the source over and above that due to our own Galaxy. The intrinsic soft X-ray luminosity of RX J1334.2+3759 is estimated to be 2.2E44 erg/s in the energy band of 0.1-2.0 keV. The optical spectrum of RX J1334.2+3759 is typical of the NLS1 galaxies showing strong Balmer Hbeta, Halpha, and forbidden line [O III]5007. Fe II multiplets, usually present in the optical spectra of NLS1 galaxies, are also detected from RX J1334.2+3759. Decomposition of the Hbeta and Halpha line profiles shows the presence of narrow (FWHM = 880 km/s) and broad (FWHM = 2850 km/s) components in the spectrum of RX J1334.2+3759. The narrow-line region of RX J1334.2+3759 appears to be significantly different from those of normal Seyfert galaxies. A possible explanation for the observed properties of the narrow line region and the broad line region is suggested in terms of density enhancements.
