Resonant forward-scattered field in the high-saturation regime: Elastic and inelastic contributions

We measure the resonant forward scattering of light by a highly saturated atomic medium through the flashes emitted immediately after an abrupt extinction of the probe beam. The experiment is done in a dilute regime where the phenomena are well captured using the independent scattering approximation. Comparing our measurements to a model based on Maxwell-Bloch equations, our experimental results are consistent with contributions from only the elastic component, whereas the attenuation of the coherent transmission power is linked to the elastic and inelastic scatterings. In the large saturation regime and at the vicinity of the atomic resonance, we derive an asymptotic expression relating the elastic scattering power to the forward-scattered power.

Gate-defined, Accumulation-mode Quantum Dots in Monolayer and Bilayer WSe$_2$

We report the fabrication and characterization of gate-defined hole quantum dots in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$. The devices were operated with gates above and below the WSe$_2$ layer to accumulate a hole gas, which for some devices was then selectively depleted to define the dot. Temperature dependence of conductance in the Coulomb blockade regime is consistent with transport through a single level, and excited state transport through the dots was observed at temperatures up to 10 K. For adjacent charge states of a bilayer WSe$_2$ dot, magnetic field dependence of excited state energies was used to estimate $g$-factors between 0.8 and 2.4 for different states. These devices provide a platform to evaluate valley-spin states in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$ for application as qubits.

Linear and nonlinear magneto-optical rotation on the narrow strontium intercombination line

In the presence of an external static magnetic field, an atomic gas becomes optically active, showing magneto-optical rotation. In the saturated regime, the coherences among the excited substates give a nonlinear contribution to the rotation of the light polarization. In contrast with the linear magneto-optical rotation, the nonlinear counterpart is insensitive to Doppler broadening. By varying the temperature of a cold strontium gas, we observe both regimes by driving the $J=0\rightarrow J=1$ transition on the intercombination line. For this narrow transition, the sensitivity to the static magnetic field is typically three orders of magnitude larger than for a standard broad alkali transition.

A high flux source of cold strontium atoms

We describe an experimental apparatus capable of achieving a high loading rate of strontium atoms in a magneto-optical trap operating in a high vacuum environment. A key innovation of this setup is a two dimensional magneto-optical trap deflector located after a Zeeman slower. We find a loading rate of 6x10^9/s whereas the lifetime of the magnetically trapped atoms in the 3P2 state is 54s.

Cooperative Emission of a Coherent Superflash of Light

We investigate the transient coherent transmission of light through an optically thick cold stron-tium gas. We observe a coherent superflash just after an abrupt probe extinction, with peak intensity more than three times the incident one. We show that this coherent superflash is a direct signature of the cooperative forward emission of the atoms. By engineering fast transient phenomena on the incident field, we give a clear and simple picture of the physical mechanisms at play.

Injection locking of a semiconductor laser to a multi-frequency reference beam

Injection locking is a well known and commonly used method for coherent light amplification. Usually injection locking is done with a single-frequency seeding beam. In this work we show that injection locking may also be achieved in the case of multi-frequency seeding beam when slave laser provides sufficient frequency filtering. One relevant parameter turns out to be the frequency detuning between the free running slave laser and each injected frequency component. Stable selective locking to a set of three components separated of $1.2\,$GHz is obtained for (positive) detuning values between zero and $1.5\,$GHz depending on seeding power (ranging from 10 to 150 microwatt). This result suggests that, using distinct slave lasers for each line, a set of mutually coherent narrow-linewidth high-power radiation modes can be obtained.
