Magnetic properties of the coupled ladder system MgV$_2$O$_5$

We present magnetic susceptibility measurements on MgV$_2$O$_5$, a compound in which the vanadium oxide planes have the same topology as in CaV$_2$O$_5$. The most striking property is that there is an energy gap of about 15 K, much smaller than in CaV$_2$O$_5$, where the values reported are of the order of 500 K. We show that this may be understood naturally in terms of the phase diagram of the frustrated, coupled ladder system. This analysis leads to the prediction that MgV$_2$O$_5$ should have incommensurate dynamic spin fluctuations.

Phase Diagram of the S = 1/2 Frustrated Coupled Ladder System

We present a theoretical study of the magnetic phase diagram of the frustrated coupled ladder structure realized recently in several materials. This system displays a nondegenerate spin-gap state in the dimer limit and an infinitely degenerate spin-gap state in the regime of weakly-coupled zig-zag chains. Between these we demonstrate the existence of gapless, magnetically ordered regions whose order is antiferromagnetic close to the honeycomb lattice limit, and incommensurate along the chains when all three magnetic interactions compete.

Charge gap in the one--dimensional dimerized Hubbard model at quarter-filling

We propose a quantitative estimate of the charge gap that opens in the one-dimensional dimerized Hubbard model at quarter-filling due to dimerization, which makes the system effectively half--filled, and to repulsion, which induces umklapp scattering processes. Our estimate is expected to be valid for any value of the repulsion and of the parameter describing the dimerization. It is based on analytical results obtained in various limits (weak coupling, strong coupling, large dimerization) and on numerical results obtained by exact diagonalization of small clusters. We consider two models of dimerization: alternating hopping integrals and alternating on--site energies. The former should be appropriate for the Bechgaard salts, the latter for compounds where the stacks are made of alternating $TMTSF$ and $TMTTF$ molecules. % $(TMTSF)_2 X$ and $(TMTTF)_2 X$ ($X$ denotes $ClO_4$, $PF_6$, $Br$...).

Theory of Orbital Kondo Effect with Assisted Hopping in Strongly Correlated Electron Systems: Parquet Equations, Superconductivity and Mass Enhancement

Orbital Kondo effect is treated in a model, where additional to the conduction band there are localized orbitals close to the Fermi energy. If the hopping between the conduction band and the localized heavy orbitals depends on the occupation of the atomic orbitals in the conduction band then orbital Kondo correlation occurs. The noncommutative nature of the coupling required for the Kondo effect is formally due to the form factors associated with the assisted hopping which in the momentum representation depends on the momenta of the conduction electrons involved. The leading logarithmic vertex corrections are due to the local Coulomb interaction between the electrons on the heavy orbital and in the conduction band. The renormalized vertex functions are obtained as a solution of a closed set of differential equations and they show power behavior. The amplitude of large renormalization is determined by an infrared cutoff due to finite energy and dispersion of the heavy particles. The enhanced assisted hopping rate results in mass enhancement and attractive interaction in the conduction band. The superconductivity transition temperature calculated is largest for intermediate mass enhancement, $m^*/m \approx 2-3$. For larger mass enhancement the small one particle weight ($Z$) in the Green's function reduces the transition temperature which may be characteristic for other
