Repetitive resolutions over classical orders and finite dimensional algebras

Repetitiveness in projective and injective resolutions and its influence on homological dimensions are studied. Some variations on the theme of repetitiveness are introduced, and it is shown that the corresponding invariants lead to very good -- and quite accessible -- upper bounds on various finitistic dimensions in terms of individual modules. These invariants are the `repetition index' and the `syzygy type' of a module $M$ over an artinian ring $Λ$. The repetition index measures the degree of repetitiveness among non-projective direct summands of the syzygies of $M$, while the syzygy type of $M$ measures the number of indecomposable modules among direct summands of the syzygies of $M$. It is proved that if $T$ is a right $Λ$-module which contains an isomorphic copy of $Λ/J(Λ)$, then the left big finitistic dimension of $Λ$ is bounded above by the repetition index of $T$, which in turn is bounded above by the syzygy type of $T$. The finite dimensional $K$-algebras $Λ= {\cal O}/π{\cal O}$, where $\cal O$ is a classical order over a discrete valuation ring $D$ with uniformizing parameter $π$ and residue class field $K$, are investigated. It is proved that, if $\text{gl.dim.}\, {\cal O} =d<\infty$, then the global repetition index of $Λ$ is $d-1$ and all finitely generated $Λ$-modules have finite syzygy type. Various examples illustrating the results are presented.

Zariski topologies on stratified spectra of quantum algebras

A framework is developed to describe the Zariski topologies on the prime and primitive spectra of a quantum algebra $A$ in terms of the (known) topologies on strata of these spaces and maps between the collections of closed sets of different strata. A conjecture is formulated, under which the desired maps would arise from homomorphisms between certain central subalgebras of localized factor algebras of $A$. When the conjecture holds, spec $A$ and prim $A$ are then determined, as topological spaces, by a finite collection of (classical) affine algebraic varieties and morphisms between them. The conjecture is verified for ${\cal O}_q(GL_2(k))$, ${\cal O}_q(SL_3(k))$, and ${\cal O}_q(M_2(k))$ when $q$ is a non-root of unity and the base field $k$ is algebraically closed.

Unipotent and Nakayama automorphisms of quantum nilpotent algebras

Automorphisms of algebras $R$ from a very large axiomatic class of quantum nilpotent algebras are studied using techniques from noncommutative unique factorization domains and quantum cluster algebras. First, the Nakayama automorphism of $R$ (associated to its structure as a twisted Calabi-Yau algebra) is determined and shown to be given by conjugation by a normal element, namely, the product of the homogeneous prime elements of $R$ (there are finitely many up to associates). Second, in the case when $R$ is connected graded, the unipotent automorphisms of $R$ are classified up to minor exceptions. This theorem is a far reaching extension of the classification results [20, 22] previously used to settle the Andruskiewitsch--Dumas and Launois--Lenagan conjectures. The result on unipotent automorphisms has a wide range of applications to the determination of the full automorphisms groups of the connected graded algebras in the family. This is illustrated by a uniform treatment of the automorphism groups of the generic algebras of quantum matrices of both rectangular and square shape [13, 20].

Irreducible components of module varieties: projective equations and rationality

We expand the existing arsenal of methods for exploring the irreducible components of the varieties $Rep(A,\bold d)$ which parametrize the representations with dimension vector $\bold d$ of a finite dimensional algebra $A$. To do so, we move back and forth between $Rep(A,\bold d)$ and a projective variety, $GRASS(A,\bold d)$, parametrizing the same set of isomorphism classes of modules. In particular, we show the irreducible components to be accessible in a highly compressed format within the projective setting. Our results include necessary and sufficient conditions for unirationality, smoothness, and normality, followed by applications. Moreover, they provide equational access to the irreducible components of $GRASS(A,\bold d)$ and techniques for deriving qualitative information regarding both the affine and projective scenarios.

C*-algebras of separated graphs

The construction of the C*-algebra associated to a directed graph $E$ is extended to incorporate a family $C$ consisting of partitions of the sets of edges emanating from the vertices of $E$. These C*-algebras $C^*(E,C)$ are analyzed in terms of their ideal theory and K-theory, mainly in the case of partitions by finite sets. The groups $K_0(C^*(E,C))$ and $K_1(C^*(E,C))$ are completely described via a map built from an adjacency matrix associated to $(E,C)$. One application determines the K-theory of the C*-algebras $U^{\text{nc}}_{m,n}$, confirming a conjecture of McClanahan. A reduced C*-algebra $\Cstred(E,C)$ is also introduced and studied. A key tool in its construction is the existence of canonical faithful conditional expectations from the C*-algebra of any row-finite graph to the C*-subalgebra generated by its vertices. Differences between $\Cstred(E,C)$ and $C^*(E,C)$, such as simplicity versus non-simplicity, are exhibited in various examples, related to some algebras studied by McClanahan.

Leavitt path algebras of separated graphs

The construction of the Leavitt path algebra associated to a directed graph $E$ is extended to incorporate a family $C$ consisting of partitions of the sets of edges emanating from the vertices of $E$. The new algebras, $L_K(E,C)$, are analyzed in terms of their homology, ideal theory, and K-theory. These algebras are proved to be hereditary, and it is shown that any conical abelian monoid occurs as the monoid $\mon{L_K(E,C)}$ of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules over one of these algebras. The lattice of trace ideals of $L_K(E,C)$ is determined by graph-theoretic data, namely as a lattice of certain pairs consisting of a subset of $E^0$ and a subset of $C$. Necessary conditions for $\mon{L_K(E,C)}$ to be a refinement monoid are developed, together with a construction that embeds $(E,C)$ in a separated graph $(E_+,C^+)$ such that $\mon{L_K(E_+,C^+)}$ has refinement.

Torus-invariant prime ideals in quantum matrices, totally nonnegative cells and symplectic leaves

The algebra of quantum matrices of a given size supports a rational torus action by automorphisms. It follows from work of Letzter and the first named author that to understand the prime and primitive spectra of this algebra, the first step is to understand the prime ideals that are invariant under the torus action. In this paper, we prove that a family of quantum minors is the set of all quantum minors that belong to a given torus-invariant prime ideal of a quantum matrix algebra if and only if the corresponding family of minors defines a non-empty totally nonnegative cell in the space of totally nonnegative real matrices of the appropriate size. As a corollary, we obtain explicit generating sets of quantum minors for the torus-invariant prime ideals of quantum matrices in the case where the quantisation parameter $q$ is transcendental over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Totally nonnegative cells and matrix Poisson varieties

We describe explicitly the admissible families of minors for the totally nonnegative cells of real matrices, that is, the families of minors that produce nonempty cells in the cell decompositions of spaces of totally nonnegative matrices introduced by A. Postnikov. In order to do this, we relate the totally nonnegative cells to torus orbits of symplectic leaves of the Poisson varieties of complex matrices. In particular, we describe the minors that vanish on a torus orbit of symplectic leaves, we prove that such families of minors are exactly the admissible families, and we show that the nonempty totally nonnegative cells are the intersections of the torus orbits of symplectic leaves with the spaces of totally nonnegative matrices.

Noetherian Hopf algebra domains of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension two

We classify all noetherian Hopf algebras $H$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero which are integral domains of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension two and satisfy the condition $\Ext^1_H(k,k)\neq 0$. The latter condition is conjecturally redundant, as no examples are known (among noetherian Hopf algebra domains of GK-dimension two) where it fails.

Semiclassical limits of quantized coordinate rings

This paper offers an expository account of some ideas, methods, and conjectures concerning quantized coordinate rings and their semiclassical limits, with a particular focus on primitive ideal spaces. The semiclassical limit of a family of quantized coordinate rings of an affine algebraic variety V consists of the classical coordinate ring O(V) equipped with an associated Poisson structure. Conjectured relationships between primitive ideals of a generic quantized coordinate ring A and symplectic leaves in V (relative to a semiclassical limit Poisson structure on O(V)) are discussed, as are breakdowns in the connections when the symplectic leaves are not algebraic. This prompts replacement of the differential-geometric concept of symplectic leaves with the algebraic concept of symplectic cores, and a reformulated conjecture is proposed: The primitive spectrum of A should be homeomorphic to the space of symplectic cores in V, and to the Poisson-primitive spectrum of O(V). Various examples, including both quantized coordinate rings and enveloping algebras of solvable Lie algebras, are analyzed to support the choice of symplectic cores to replace symplectic leaves.

Semiclassical Limits of Quantum Affine Spaces

Semiclassical limits of generic multiparameter quantized coordinate rings A = O_q(k^n) of affine spaces are constructed and related to A, for k an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and q a multiplicatively antisymmetric matrix whose entries generate a torsionfree subgroup of k*. A semiclassical limit of A is a Poisson algebra structure on the corresponding classical coordinate ring R = O(k^n), and results of Oh, Park, Shin and the authors are used to construct homeomorphisms from the Poisson prime and Poisson primitive spectra of R onto the prime and primitive spectra of A. The Poisson primitive spectrum of R is then identified with the space of symplectic cores in k^n in the sense of Brown and Gordon, and an example is presented (over the complex numbers) for which the Poisson primitive spectrum of R is not homeomorphic to the space of symplectic leaves in k^n. Finally, these results are extended from quantum affine spaces to quantum affine toric varieties.

Leavitt path algebras and direct limits

An introduction to Leavitt path algebras of arbitrary directed graphs is presented, and direct limit techniques are developed, with which many results that had previously been proved for countable graphs can be extended to uncountable ones. Such results include characterizations of simplicity, characterizations of the exchange property, and cancellation conditions for the K-theoretic monoid of equivalence classes of idempotent matrices.

The Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence and a Gel'fand-Kirillov problem for Poisson polynomial algebras

The structure of Poisson polynomial algebras of the type obtained as semiclassical limits of quantized coordinate rings is investigated. Sufficient conditions for a rational Poisson action of a torus on such an algebra to leave only finitely many Poisson prime ideals invariant are obtained. Combined with previous work of the first-named author, this establishes the Poisson Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence for large classes of Poisson polynomial rings, such as semiclassical limits of quantum matrices, quantum symplectic and euclidean spaces, quantum symmetric and antisymmetric matrices. For a similarly large class of Poisson polynomial rings, it is proved that the quotient field of the algebra (respectively, of any Poisson prime factor ring) is a rational function field $F(x_1,...,x_n)$ over the base field (respectively, over an extension field of the base field) with $\{x_i,x_j\}= λ_{ij} x_ix_j$ for suitable scalars $λ_{ij}$, thus establishing a quadratic Poisson version of the Gel'fand-Kirillov problem. Finally, partial solutions to the isomorphism problem for Poisson fields of the type just mentioned are obtained.

A Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence for Poisson algebras with torus actions

A Poisson analog of the Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence is established for any affine Poisson algebra $R$ on which an algebraic torus $H$ acts rationally, by Poisson automorphisms, such that $R$ has only finitely many prime Poisson $H$-stable ideals. In this setting, an additional characterization of the Poisson primitive ideals of $R$ is obtained -- they are precisely the prime Poisson ideals maximal in their $H$-strata (where two prime Poisson ideals are in the same $H$-stratum if the intersections of their $H$-orbits coincide). Further, the Zariski topology on the space of Poisson primitive ideals of $R$ agrees with the quotient topology induced by the natural surjection from the maximal ideal space of $R$ onto the Poisson primitive ideal space. These theorems apply to many Poisson algebras arising from quantum groups. The full structure of a Poisson algebra is not necessary for the results of this paper, which are developed in the setting of a commutative algebra equipped with a set of derivations.

Poisson structures on affine spaces and flag varieties. II. General case

The standard Poisson structures on the flag varieties G/P of a complex reductive algebraic group G are investigated. It is shown that the orbits of symplectic leaves in G/P under a fixed maximal torus of G are smooth irreducible locally closed subvarieties of G/P, isomorphic to intersections of dual Schubert cells in the full flag variety G/B of G, and their Zariski closures are explicitly computed. Two different proofs of the former result are presented. The first is in the framework of Poisson homogeneous spaces and the second one uses an idea of weak splittings of surjective Poisson submersions, based on the notion of Poisson--Dirac submanifolds. For a parabolic subgroup P with abelian unipotent radical (in which case G/P is a Hermitian symmetric space of compact type), it is shown that all orbits of the standard Levi factor L of P on G/P are complete Poisson subvarieties which are quotients of L, equipped with the standard Poisson structure. Moreover, it is proved that the Poisson structure on G/P vanishes at all special base points for the L-orbits on G/P constructed by Richardson, Röhrle, and Steinberg.
