Further discussion of Tomboulis' approach to the confinement problem

We discuss in some detail certain gaps and open problems in the recent paper by E. T. Tomboulis, which claims to give a rigorous proof of quark confinement in 4D lattice Yang-Mills theory for all values of the bare coupling. We also discuss what would be needed to fill the gaps in his proof.

A Canonical Ensemble Approach to the Fermion/Boson Random Point Processes and its Applications

We introduce the boson and the fermion point processes from the elementary quantum mechanical point of view. That is, we consider quantum statistical mechanics of canonical ensemble for a fixed number of particles which obey Bose-Einstein, Fermi-Dirac statistics, respectively, in a finite volume. Focusing on the distribution of positions of the particles, we have point processes of the fixed number of points in a bounded domain. By taking the thermodynamic limit such that the particle density converges to a finite value, the boson/fermion processes are obtained. This argument is a realization of the equivalence of ensembles, since resulting processes are considered to describe a grand canonical ensemble of points. Random point processes corresponding to para-particles of order two are discussed as an application of the formulation. A statistics of a system of composite particles at zero temperature are also considered as a model of determinantal random point processes.

A Random Point Field related to Bose-Einstein Condensation

The random point field which describes the position distribution of the system of ideal boson gas in a state of Bose-Einstein condensation is obtained through the thermodynamic limit. The resulting point field is given by convolution of two independent point fields: the so called boson process whose generating functional is represented by inverse of the Fredholm determinant for an operator related to the heat operator and the point field whose generating functional is represented by a resolvent of the operator. The construction of the latter point field in an abstract formulation is also given.

Mass Renormalization in Non-relativistic Quantum Electrodynamics with Spin 1/2

The effective mass $\mass$ of the the Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonain with ultraviolet cutoff $Λ$ and the bare mass $m$ in nonrelativistic QED with spin 1/2 is investigated. Analytic properties of $\mass$ in coupling constant $e$ are shown and explicit forms of constants $a_1(Λ/m)$ and $a_2(Λ/m)$ depending on $Λ/m$ such that $$\mass/m =1 + a_1(Λ/m) e^2+ a_2(Λ/m) e^4+ {\mathcal O}(e^6)$$ are given. It is shown that the spin interaction enhances the effective mass and that there exist strictly positive constants $b_1,b_2, c_1$ and $c_2$ such that $$\d b_1\leq \lim_{Λ\to\infty} \frac{a_1(\Lamdda/m)}{\log (Λ/m)}\leq b_2, c_1\leq \lim_{Λ\to\infty} \frac{a_2(Λ/m)}{(Λ/m)^2}\leq -c_2.$$ In particular $a_2(Λ/m)$ does not diverges as $\pm [\log(Λ/m)]^2$ but $-(Λ/m)^2$.

Local exponents and infinitesimal generators of canonical transformations on Boson Fock spaces

A one-parameter symplectic group $\{e^{t\dA}\}_{t\in\RR}$ derives proper canonical transformations on a Boson Fock space. It has been known that the unitary operator $U_t$ implementing such a proper canonical transformation gives a projective unitary representation of $\{e^{t\dA}\}_{t\in\RR}$ and that $U_t$ can be expressed as a normal-ordered form. We rigorously derive the self-adjoint operator $\D(\dA)$ and a phase factor $e^{i\int_0^t\TA(s)ds}$ with a real-valued function $\TA$ such that $U_t=e^{i\int_0^t\TA(s)ds}e^{it\D(\dA)}$. Key words: Canonical transformations(Bogoliubov transformations), symplectic groups, projective unitary representations, one-parameter unitary groups, infinitesimal self-adjoint generators, local factors, local exponents, normal-ordered quadratic expressions.
