Weakly nonlinear extension of d'Alembert's formula

We consider a weakly nonlinear solution of the Cauchy problem for the regularised Boussinesq equation, which constitutes an extension of the classical d'Alembert's formula for the linear wave equation. The solution is given by a simple and explicit formula, expressed in terms of two special functions solving the initial-value problems for two Korteweg-de Vries equations. We test the formula by considering several examples with `exactly solvable initial conditions' and their perturbations. Explicit analytical solutions are compared with the results of direct numerical simulations.

Initial-value problem for coupled Boussinesq equations and a hierarchy of Ostrovsky equations

We consider the initial-value problem for a system of coupled Boussinesq equations on the infinite line for localised or sufficiently rapidly decaying initial data, generating sufficiently rapidly decaying right- and left-propagating waves. We study the dynamics of weakly nonlinear waves, and using asymptotic multiple-scales expansions and averaging with respect to the fast time, we obtain a hierarchy of asymptotically exact coupled and uncoupled Ostrovsky equations for unidirectional waves. We then construct a weakly nonlinear solution of the initial-value problem in terms of solutions of the derived Ostrovsky equations within the accuracy of the governing equations, and show that there are no secular terms. When coupling parameters are equal to zero, our results yield a weakly nonlinear solution of the initial-value problem for the Boussinesq equation in terms of solutions of the initial-value problems for two Korteweg-de Vries equations, integrable by the Inverse Scattering Transform. We also perform relevant numerical simulations of the original unapproximated system of Boussinesq equations to illustrate the difference in the behaviour of its solutions for different asymptotic regimes.

On linear degeneracy of integrable quasilinear systems in higher dimensions

We investigate $(d+1)$-dimensional quasilinear systems which are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. In the case $d\geq 3$ we formulate a conjecture that any such system with an irreducible dispersion relation must be linearly degenerate. We prove this conjecture in the 2-component case, providing a complete classification of multi-dimensional integrable systems in question. In particular, our results imply the non-existence of 2-component integrable systems of hydrodynamic type for $d\geq 6$. In the second half of the paper we discuss a numerical and analytical evidence for the impossibility of the breakdown of smooth initial data for linearly degenerate systems in 2+1 dimensions.

Integrable equations of the dispersionless Hirota type and hypersurfaces in the Lagrangian Grassmannian

We investigate integrable second order equations of the form F(u_{xx}, u_{xy}, u_{yy}, u_{xt}, u_{yt}, u_{tt})=0. Familiar examples include the Boyer-Finley equation, the potential form of the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, the dispersionless Hirota equation, etc. The integrability is understood as the existence of infinitely many hydrodynamic reductions. We demonstrate that the natural equivalence group of the problem is isomorphic to Sp(6), revealing a remarkable correspondence between differential equations of the above type and hypersurfaces of the Lagrangian Grassmannian. We prove that the moduli space of integrable equations of the dispersionless Hirota type is 21-dimensional, and the action of the equivalence group Sp(6) on the moduli space has an open orbit.

Classification of integrable Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains associated with Kupershmidt's brackets

We characterize a class of integrable Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains, based on the necessary condition for the integrability provided by the vanishing of the Haantjes tensor. We prove that the vanishing of the first few components of the Haantjes tensor is already sufficiently restrictive, and allows a complete description of the corresponding Hamiltonian densities. In each of the cases we were able to explicitly construct a generating function for conservation laws, thus establishing the integrability.

Double waves in multi-dimensional systems of hydrodynamic type: a necessary condition for integrability

An invariant differential-geometric approach to the integrability of (2+1)-dimensional systems of hydrodynamic type u_t+A(u)u_x+B(u)u_y=0 is developed. It is proved that the existence of special solutions known as `double waves' is equivalent to the diagonalizability of an arbitrary matrix of the two-parameter family (kE+A)^{-1}(lE+B). Since the diagonalizability can be effectively verified by differential-geometric means, this provides a simple necessary condition for integrability.

Modulational instability of two pairs of counter-propagating waves and energy exchange in two-component media

The dynamics of two pairs of counter-propagating waves in two-component media is considered within the framework of two generally nonintegrable coupled Sine-Gordon equations. We consider the dynamics of weakly nonlinear wave packets, and using an asymptotic multiple-scales expansion we obtain a suite of evolution equations to describe energy exchange between the two components of the system. Depending on the wave packet length-scale vis-a-vis the wave amplitude scale, these evolution equations are either four non-dispersive and nonlinearly coupled envelope equations, or four non-locally coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations. We also consider a set of fully coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations, even though this system contains small dispersive terms which are strictly beyond the leading order of the asymptotic multiple-scales expansion method. Using both the theoretical predictions following from these asymptotic models and numerical simulations of the original unapproximated equations, we investigate the stability of plane-wave solutions, and show that they may be modulationally unstable. These instabilities can then lead to the formation of localized structures, and to a modification of the energy exchange between the components. When the system is close to being integrable, the time-evolution is distinguished by a remarkable almost periodic sequence of energy exchange scenarios, with spatial patterns alternating between approximately uniform wavetrains and localized structures.

On a class of three-dimensional integrable Lagrangians

We characterize non-degenerate Lagrangians of the form $ \int f(u_x, u_y, u_t) dx dy dt $ such that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations $ (f_{u_x})_x+ (f_{u_y})_y+ (f_{u_t})_t=0 $ are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. The integrability conditions constitute an over-determined system of fourth order PDEs for the Lagrangian density $f$, which is in involution and possess interesting differential-geometric properties. The moduli space of integrable Lagrangians, factorized by the action of a natural equivalence group, is three-dimensional. Familiar examples include the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) and the Boyer-Finley Lagrangians, $f=u_x^3/3+u_y^2-u_xu_t$ and $f=u_x^2+u_y^2-2e^{u_t}$, respectively. A complete description of integrable cubic and quartic Lagrangians is obtained. Up to the equivalence transformations, the list of integrable cubic Lagrangians reduces to three examples, $ f=u_xu_yu_t, f=u_x^2u_y+u_yu_t, and f=u_x^3/3+u_y^2-u_xu_t ({\rm dKP}).$ There exists a unique integrable quartic Lagrangian, $ f=u_x^4+2u_x^2u_t-u_xu_y-u_t^2.$ We conjecture that these examples exhaust the list of integrable polynomial Lagrangians which are essentially three-dimensional (it was verified that there exist no polynomial integrable Lagrangians of degree five). We prove that the Euler-Lagrange equations are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions if and only if they possess a scalar pseudopotential playing the role of a dispersionless `Lax pair'. Hydrodynamic reductions of multi-dimensional dispersionless PDEs: the test for integrability

A (d+1)-dimensional dispersionless PDE is said to be integrable if its n-component hydrodynamic reductions are locally parametrized by (d-1)n arbitrary functions of one variable. Given a PDE which does not pass the integrability test, the method of hydrodynamic reductions allows one to effectively reconstruct additional differential constraints which, when added to the equation, make it an integrable system in fewer dimensions (if consistent).

The characterization of two-component (2+1)-dimensional integrable systems of hydrodynamic type

We obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for a two-component (2+1)-dimensional system of hydrodynamic type to possess infinitely many hydrodynamic reductions. These conditions are in involution, implying that the systems in question are locally parametrized by 15 arbitrary constants. It is proved that all such systems possess three conservation laws of hydrodynamic type and, therefore, are symmetrizable in Godunov's sense. Moreover, all such systems are proved to possess a scalar pseudopotential which plays the role of the `dispersionless Lax pair'. We demonstrate that the class of two-component systems possessing a scalar pseudopotential is in fact identical with the class of systems possessing infinitely many hydrodynamic reductions, thus establishing the equivalence of the two possible definitions of the integrability. Explicit linearly degenerate examples are constructed.

On integrability of (2+1)-dimensional quasilinear systems

A (2+1)-dimensional quasilinear system is said to be `integrable' if it can be decoupled in infinitely many ways into a pair of compatible n-component one-dimensional systems in Riemann invariants. Exact solutions described by these reductions, known as nonlinear interactions of planar simple waves, can be viewed as natural dispersionless analogs of n-gap solutions. It is demonstrated that the requirement of the existence of 'sufficiently many' n-component reductions provides the effective classification criterion. As an example of this approach we classify integrable (2+1)-dimensional systems of conservation laws possessing a convex quadratic entropy.
