Canonical Constraints on Leptonic Cp Violation using UHCR neutrino fluxes

It is shown that one can in principle constrain the CP-violating parameter delta from measurements of four independant |V_{ij}|^2, or three of them and a ratio, in the leptonic sector. To quantify our approach, using unitarity, we derive simple expressions in terms of four independant |V_{ij}|^2 for cos(delta) and an expression for sin^2(delta) from J^2. Thus, depending on the values of |V_{ij}| and their accuracy, we can set meaningful limits on |delta|. To illustrate numerically, if |V_{u1}|^2 is close to 0.1 with a 10% precision, and if |V_{e3}^2 is larger than 0.005 and for values of |V_{e2}|^2 and |V_{u3}|^2 that stay within +-0.1 of the current experimental data leads to a bound pi/2 < |delta| < pi. Alternatively, a certain combination of parameters with values of |V_{e3}|^2 larger than 0.01 leads to a closed bound of 73 < |delta| < 103. In general, we find that it is better to use |V_{u1}|^2 or |V_{t1}|^2 as the fourth independant |V_{ij}|^2 and that over most of the parameter space, delta is least sensitive to |V_{e3}|^2. With just three independant measurements (solar, atmospheric and reactor) it is impossible to set limits on the CP phase. In this respect, we study the use of ultra high energy cosmic (UHCR) neutrino fluxes as the additional fourth information. We find that within the SM, neutrino fluxes of all three flavours will be very similar but that pushing current neutrino data to their extreme values still allowed, ratios of cosmic neutrino fluxes can differ by up to 20%; such large discrepancies could imply negligibly small CP-violation. We also study a non radiative neutrino decay model and find that the neutrino fluxes can differ by a factor of up to 3 within this model and that an accuracy of 10% on the neutrino fluxes is sufficient to set interestin limits on delta.

Perturbative and Nonperturbative Contributions to a Simple Model for Baryogenesis

Single field baryogenesis, a scenario for Dirac leptogenesis sourced by a time-dependent scalar condensate, is studied. We compare the creation of the charge asymmetry by the perturbative decay of the condensate with the nonperturbative decay, a process of particle production commonly known in the context of inflation as preheating. The nonperturbative channel dominates when the coupling of the scalar field to leptons is sufficiently large.

Dynamical CP Violation in the Early Universe and Leptogenesis

In a recent publication, we suggested a mechanism for obtaining dynamical CP violation in the early Universe based on the out-of-equilibrium evolution of complex scalar fields. In this paper, we suggest several ways of transferring the CP asymmetry from the scalar sector to the leptonic sector. In particular, we point out how a ``transient MNS(P) matrix'' can generate an asymmetry between fermions and anti-fermions directly.

Scale dependence of the UHECR neutrino flux in extra-dimension models

Ultra high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) neutrino fluxes measured in a fixed target detector can have a scale dependence. In the usual standard model or any extensions of this model (which are renormalizable), the effect is observationally very small. However, this need not be the case in models with extra-spatial dimensions, where the neutrino mass parameter can receive large corrections due to a power-law running. Hence, the scale dependence may lead to a measurable deviation from the standard prediction for the neutrino flux ratio.

Single Field Baryogenesis and the Scale of Inflation

In the context of inflationary cosmology, we discuss a minimal baryogenesis scenario in which the resulting baryon to entropy ratio is determined by the amplitude of the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background. The model involves a new $SU(2)_L$ scalar field which generates a Dirac neutrino mass and which is excited by quantum fluctuations during inflation, yielding a CP-violating phase. During the scalar field decay after inflation, an asymmetry in the left-handed neutrino number is generated, which then converts to a net baryon asymmetry via sphalerons. A lower limit on the expected initial value of the scalar field translates to a lower limit on the baryon to entropy ratio (which also depends on the Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling). Consistency with the limits on baryonic isocurvature perturbations requires that the spectral index of adiabatic perturbations produced during inflation be very close to unity. In a variant of our scenario in which the scalar is a gauge singlet, the connection between the baryon to entropy ratio and the inflationary scale is lost, although the basic mechanism of baryogenesis remains applicable.

Single Field Baryogenesis

We propose a new variant of the Affleck-Dine baryogenesis mechanism in which a rolling scalar field couples directly to left- and right-handed neutrinos, generating a Dirac mass term through neutrino Yukawa interactions. In this setup, there are no explicitly CP violating couplings in the Lagrangian. The rolling scalar field is also taken to be uncharged under the $B - L$ quantum numbers. During the phase of rolling, scalar field decays generate a non-vanishing number density of left-handed neutrinos, which then induce a net baryon number density via electroweak sphaleron transitions.

Dynamical CP Violation in the Early Universe

Following earlier ideas of Dolgov, we show that the asymmetrical dynamical evolution of fields in the early Universe provides a new source for CP violation. This can lead to baryogenesis without any additional CP-violating interactions. The magnitude of this CP violation is time-dependent. In particular, it vanishes (or is very small) in the late Universe after the fields have relaxed (or are in their final approach) to their vacuum values. We provide an explicit example in which our mechanism is realized.

Neutrino emission in neutron matter from magnetic moment interactions

Neutrino emission drives neutron star cooling for the first several hundreds of years after its birth. Given the low energy ($\sim$ keV) nature of this process, one expects very few nonstandard particle physics contributions which could affect this rate. Requiring that any new physics contributions involve light degrees of freedom, one of the likely candidates which can affect the cooling process would be a nonzero magnetic moment for the neutrino. To illustrate, we compute the emission rate for neutrino pair bremsstrahlung in neutron-neutron scattering through photon-neutrino magnetic moment coupling. We also present analogous differential rates for neutrino scattering off nucleons and electrons that determine neutrino opacities in supernovae. Employing current upper bounds from collider experiments on the tau magnetic moment, we find that the neutrino emission rate can exceed the rate through neutral current electroweak interaction by a factor two, signalling the importance of new particle physics input to a standard calculation of relevance to neutron star cooling. However, astrophysical bounds on the neutrino magnetic moment imply smaller effects.

Dimensional Deconstruction and Neutrino Physics

We present a simple observation for neutrino mixings and masses which arises naturally in dimensional deconstruction models. There are two essential ingredients of such models: (i) the presence of a symmetry mediated by the link fields which results in the neutrino mixings to be maximal; and (ii) a deconstruction scale which for large values gives rise to a small neutrino mass, similar in feature to the seesaw mechanism.

CP violation in polarized $b \to d l^+ l^-$: A Detailed Standard Model Analysis

The electroweak CP violating rate asymmetries in the decay $b \to d l^+ l^-$ are reexamined in detail and updated. In particular, the rate asymmetries are studied when one of the final state leptons is polarised. We find an estimate for the asymmetry of (5-15)% in the polarised decay spectrum which is close to known results for the unpolarised case. Interestingly, in the region separating the $ρ-ω$ and $c \bar c$ resonances, which is also theoretically cleanest, the polarised contribution to the asymmetry is larger than the unpolarised result. A $3σ$ signal for direct CP violation, requires about 10^{10} $B \bar B$ pairs at a B factory. In general these results indicate an asymmetric contribution from the individual polarisation states to the unpolarised CP asymmetry; an atribute for any new physics searches.

Spectral Dependence of CMB Polarization and Parity

The polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) can serve as a probe for nonstandard parity violating interactions. Many such interactions are predicted in particle physics models arising from theories with extra dimensions such as superstring theory. These interactions produce an optical activity that depends on the space-time nature of the parity violating field. In particular, it is possible to obtain a frequency-dependent differential rotation of the polarization axis. The form of the frequency dependence is sensitive to the time evolution of the parity odd background field. Thus, one may be able to study a broad class of parity violating operators through polarization measurements of the CMBR.

Possible test for CPT invariance with correlated neutral B decays

We study breakdown of $CPT$ symmetry which can occur in the decay process $B \bar B \to l^\pm X^\mp f$ with $f$ being a CP eigenstate. In this process, the standard model expectations for time ordered semi-leptonic and hadronic events, i.e. which of the two decays takes place first, can be altered in the case that there is a violation of the $CPT$ symmetry. To illustrate this possibility, we identify and study several time integrated observables. We find that an experiment with $10^{9}$ $B\bar B$ pairs, has the capability for improving the bound on $CPT$ violating parameter or perhaps observe $CPT$ violation.

Seesaw Neutrino Masses with Large Mixings from Dimensional Deconstruction

We demonstrate a dynamical origin for the dimension-five seesaw operator in dimensional deconstruction models. Light neutrino masses arise from the seesaw scale which corresponds to the inverse lattice spacing. It is shown that the deconstructing limit naturally prefers maximal leptonic mixing. Higher-order corrections which are allowed by gauge invariance can transform the bi-maximal into a bi-large mixing. These terms may appear to be non-renormalizable at scales smaller than the deconstruction scale.

Standard Model CP violation in Polarised b->d l^+ l^-

In the standard model, we study CP violating rate asymmetries in the decay b->d l^+ l^- when one of the leptons is polarised. We find an asymmetry of (5 -- 15)% in the polarised decay spectrum which is comparable to known results for the unpolarised case. In the kinematic region separating the rho-omega and $c \bar c$ resonances, which is also theoretically cleanest, the polarised contribution to the asymmetry is larger than the unpolarised results. In order to observe a 3 sigma signal for direct CP violation in the polarised spectrum, assuming 100% efficiency, about 10^10 $B \bar B$ pairs are required at a B factory. Our results indicate an asymmetric contribution from the individual polarisation states to the unpolarised CP asymmetry. Taking advantage of this, one can attribute any new physics to be most sensitive to a specific polarisation state.

The solar LMA neutrino oscillation solution in the Zee model

We examine the neutrino mass matrix in the version of Zee model where both Higgs doublets couple to the leptons. We show that in this case one can accommodate the large mixing angle (LMA) MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem, while avoiding maximal solar mixing and conflicts with constraints on lepton family number-violating interactions. In the simplified scenario we consider, we have the neutrino mass spectrum characterized by $m_1 \simeq m_2 \simeq \sqrt{Δm^2_\mathrm{atm}}/\sin 2θ$ and $m_3/m_1 \simeq \cos 2θ$, where $θ$ is the solar mixing angle.

Polarized J/psi production from B mesons at the Tevatron

In the framework of NRQCD and parton model, we estimate in detail, the production cross section for polarized J/psi from B meson decays. In order to contrast with data, we also take into account additional J/psi production due to decay of excited charmonium states. We calculate the helicity parameter, alpha, and as an application, we study our results for the Tevatron. This is in contrast to the earlier studies which were performed for prompt J/psi production from p pbar collisions. Our estimates are, for J/psi from B decays, alpha_{J/psi} = -0.04 +- 0.06 and for B decays to psi', alpha_{psi'}= -0.03 +- 0.07. These results have been evaluated in the J/psi transverse momentum interval, 10 GeV < k_T < 30 GeV. In the limit of the color singlet model, alpha shows a direct dependence on the Peterson parameter, thereby reflecting the dynamics of the b quark hadronization. With Run II of the Tevatron, it is expected that the fits for alpha will improve by about a factor of 50, leading to better limits on the matrix elements.

Leptogenesis and low energy observables in left-right symmetric models

In the context of left-right symmetric models we study the connection of leptogenesis and low energy parameters such as neutrinoless double beta decay and leptonic CP violation. Upon imposition of a unitarity constraint, the neutrino parameters are significantly restricted and the Majorana phases are determined within a narrow range, depending on the kind of solar solution. One of the Majorana phases gets determined to a good accuracy and thereby the second phase can be probed from the results of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. We examine the contributions of the solar and atmospheric mass squared differences to the asymmetry and find that in general the solar scale dominates. In order to let the atmospheric scale dominate, some finetuning between one of the Majorana phases and the Dirac CP phase is required. In this case, one of the Majorana phases is determined by the amount of CP violation in oscillation experiments.

Neutrino magnetic moment, large extra dimensions and high energy cosmic neutrino spectra

We point out that the presence of bulk neutrinos in models with large extra spatial dimensions can lead to observable flavour specific deformations in the spectra of extreme high energy cosmic neutrinos. These deformations are due to the spin precession of the high energy neutrinos in the background magnetic fields via electromagnetic interactions. Measurements with existing and proposed neutrino telescopes which are meant to detect high energy neutrinos can therefore provide a novel way to probe the size of extra hidden dimensions. We qualitatively illustrate the flavour suppression due to the Earth, Sun and intergalactic magnetic fields. An observable consequence of this precession could be an angular asymmetry for the extreme high energy neutrinos from the atmosphere and flavour specific deformations of the intergalactic neutrinos.
