Four-loop logarithms in 3d gauge + Higgs theory

We discuss the logarithmic contributions to the vacuum energy density of the three-dimensional SU(3) + adjoint Higgs theory in its symmetric phase, and relate them to numerical Monte Carlo simulations. We also comment on the implications of these results for perturbative and non-perturbative determinations of the pressure of finite-temperature QCD.

Measuring infrared contributions to the QCD pressure

For the pressure (or free energy) of QCD, four-dimensional (4d) lattice data is available at zero baryon density up to a few times the critical temperature $T_c$. Perturbation theory, on the other hand, has serious convergence problems even at very high temperatures. In a combined analytical and three-dimensional (3d) lattice method, we show that it is possible to compute the QCD pressure from about $2 T_c$ to infinity. The numerical accuracy is good enough to resolve in principle, e.g., logarithmic contributions related to 4-loop perturbation theory.

Critical behaviour of the Ginzburg-Landau model in the type II region

We study the critical behaviour of the three-dimensional U(1) gauge+Higgs theory (Ginzburg-Landau model) at large scalar self-coupling λ(``type II region'') by measuring various correlation lengths as well as the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortex tension. We identify different scaling regions as the transition is approached from below, and carry out detailed comparisons with the criticality of the 3d O(2) symmetric scalar theory.

Two Higgs doublet dynamics at the electroweak phase transition: a non-perturbative study

Using a three-dimensional (3d) effective field theory and non-perturbative lattice simulations, we study the MSSM electroweak phase transition with two dynamical Higgs doublets. We first carry out a general analysis of spontaneous CP violation in 3d two Higgs doublet models, finding that this part of the parameter space is well separated from that corresponding to the physical MSSM. We then choose physical parameter values with explicit CP violation and a light right-handed stop, and determine the strength of the phase transition. We find a transition somewhat stronger than in 2-loop perturbation theory, leading to the conclusion that from the point of view of the non-equilibrium constraint, MSSM electroweak baryogenesis can be allowed even for a Higgs mass mH \approx 115 GeV. We also find that small values of the mass parameter mA (\lsim 120 GeV), which would relax the experimental constraint on mH, do not weaken the transition noticeably for a light enough stop. Finally we determine the properties of the phase boundary.

How to resum long-distance contributions to the QCD pressure?

The strict coupling constant expansion for the free energy of hot QCD plasma shows bad convergence at all reasonable temperatures, and does not agree well with its 4d lattice determination. This has recently lead to various refined resummations, whereby the agreement with the lattice result should improve, at the cost of a loss of a formal agreement with the coupling constant expansion and particularly with its large infrared sensitive ``long-distance'' contributions. We show here how to resum the dominant long-distance effects by using a 3d effective field theory, and determine their magnitude by simple lattice Monte Carlo simulations.

Eigenvalue Distributions of the QCD Dirac Operator

We compute by Monte Carlo methods the individual distributions of the $k$th smallest Dirac operator eigenvalues in QCD, and compare them with recent analytical predictions. We do this for both massless and massive quarks in an SU(3) gauge theory with staggered fermions. Very precise agreement is found in all cases. As a simple by-product we also extract the microscopic spectral density of the Dirac operator in SU(3) gauge theory with dynamical massive fermions for $N_f=1$ and 2, and obtain high-accuracy agreement with analytical expressions.

Low-lying Eigenvalues of the QCD Dirac Operator at Finite Temperature

We compute the low-lying spectrum of the staggered Dirac operator above and below the finite temperature phase transition in both quenched QCD and in dynamical four flavor QCD. In both cases we find, in the high temperature phase, a density with close to square root behavior, $ρ(λ) \sim (λ-λ_0)^{1/2}$. In the quenched simulations we find, in addition, a volume independent tail of small eigenvalues extending down to zero. In the dynamical simulations we also find a tail, decreasing with decreasing mass, at the small end of the spectrum. However, the tail falls off quite quickly and does not seem to extend to zero at these couplings. We find that the distribution of the smallest Dirac operator eigenvalues provides an efficient observable for an accurate determination of the location of the chiral phase transition, as first suggested by Jackson and Verbaarschot.

O(2) symmetry breaking vs. vortex loop percolation

We study with lattice Monte Carlo simulations the relation of global O(2) symmetry breaking in three dimensions to the properties of a geometrically defined vortex loop network. We find that different definitions of constructing a network lead to different results even in the thermodynamic limit, and that with typical definitions the percolation transition does not coincide with the thermodynamic phase transition. These results show that geometrically defined percolation observables need not display universal properties related to the critical behaviour of the system, and do not in general survive in the field theory limit.

Critical Behavior in Nt = 4 Staggered Fermion Thermodynamics

Quantum chromodynamics with two zero-mass flavors is expected to exhibit a phase transition with O(4) critical behavior. Fixing the universality class is important for phenomenology and for facilitating the extrapolation of simulation data to physical quark mass values. Other groups have reported results from lattice QCD simulations with dynamical staggered quarks at Nt = 4, which suggest a departure from the expected critical behavior. We have pushed simulations to the largest volumes and smallest quark mass to date. Strong discrepancies in critical exponents and the scaling equation of state persist.

Hard Thermal Loops and the Sphaleron Rate on the Lattice

We measure the sphaleron rate (topological susceptibility) of hot SU(2) gauge theory, using a lattice implementation of the hard thermal loop (HTL) effective action. The HTL degrees of freedom are implemented by an expansion in spherical harmonics and truncation. Our results for the sphaleron rate agree with the parametric prediction of Arnold, Son and Yaffe: Gamma ~ α^5 T^4.

Statistical mechanics of vortices from field theory

We study with lattice Monte Carlo simulations the interactions and macroscopic behaviour of a large number of vortices in the 3-dimensional U(1) gauge+Higgs field theory, in an external magnetic field. We determine non-perturbatively the (attractive or repelling) interaction energy between two or more vortices, as well as the critical field strength H_c, the thermodynamical discontinuities, and the surface tension related to the boundary between the Meissner phase and the Coulomb phase in the type I region. We also investigate the emergence of vortex lattice and vortex liquid phases in the type II region. For the type I region the results obtained are in qualitative agreement with mean field theory, except for small values of H_c, while in the type II region there are significant discrepancies. These findings are relevant for superconductors and some models of cosmic strings, as well as for the electroweak phase transition in a magnetic field.

Looking for Effects of Topology in the Dirac Spectrum of Staggered Fermions

We classify SU(3) gauge field configurations in different topological sectors by the smearing technique. In each sector we compute the distribution of low lying eigenvalues of the staggered Dirac operator. In all sectors we find perfect agreement with the predictions for the sector of topological charge zero. The smallest Dirac operator eigenvalues of staggered fermions at presently realistic lattice couplings are thus insensitive to gauge field topology. On the smeared configurations, $4ν$ eigenvalues go to zero in agreement with the index theorem.

Spontaneous CP violation on the lattice

At finite temperatures around the electroweak phase transition, the thermodynamics of the MSSM can be described by a three-dimensional two Higgs doublet effective theory. This effective theory has a phase where CP is spontaneously violated. We study spontaneous CP violation with non-perturbative lattice simulations, and analyse whether one could end up in this phase for any physical MSSM parameter values.

Chern-Simons Number Diffusion and Hard Thermal Loops on the Lattice

We develop a discrete lattice implementation of the hard thermal loop effective action by the method of added auxiliary fields. We use the resulting model to measure the sphaleron rate (topological susceptibility) of Yang-Mills theory at weak coupling. Our results give parametric behavior in accord with the arguments of Arnold, Son, and Yaffe, and are in quantitative agreement with the results of Moore, Hu, and Muller.

Staggered Fermions and Gauge Field Topology

Based on a large number of smearing steps, we classify SU(3) gauge field configurations in different topological sectors. For each sector we compare the exact analytical predictions for the microscopic Dirac operator spectrum of quenched staggered fermions. In all sectors we find perfect agreement with the predictions for the sector of topological charge zero, showing explicitly that the smallest Dirac operator eigenvalues of staggered fermions at presently realistic lattice couplings are insensitive to gauge field topology. On the smeared configurations, $4ν$ eigenvalues clearly separate out from the rest on configurations of topological charge $ν$, and move towards zero in agreement with the index theorem.

Magnetic field on lattice U(1)-Higgs and SU(2)xU(1)-Higgs theories

External (hyper)magnetic field can modify the phase structure in U(1) gauge+Higgs (Landau-Ginzburg) and SU(2)xU(1) gauge+Higgs (Standard Model) theories. In this talk I discuss how the magnetic field can be implemented on the lattice, and summarize the effects on symmetry breaking phase transitions.

Higgs sector CP-violation at the electroweak phase transition

We consider explicit and spontaneous CP-violation related to the profile of the two Higgs doublets at the MSSM electroweak phase transition. We find, in accordance with previous results, that in principle spontaneous CP-violation could exist in the MSSM at finite temperatures, but when the constraints from experiment and the strength of the transition are taken into account, the relevant region of the parameter space is rather restricted. Nevertheless, we show that in this small region, perturbative estimates need not be reliable, and non-perturbatively the region might be slightly larger (or smaller). To allow for more precise perturbative studies and for a lattice study of the non-perturbative corrections, we construct an effective 3d theory for the light stops and the two Higgses in the regime of large mQ. The 3d theory involves CP-violating parameters and allows to determine CP-odd observables.

The Electroweak Phase Transition in a Magnetic Field

We study the finite temperature electroweak phase transition in an external hypercharge U(1) magnetic field H_Y, using lattice Monte Carlo simulations. For sufficiently small fields, H_Y/T^2 < 0.3, the magnetic field makes the first order transition stronger, but it still turns into a crossover for Higgs masses m_H ~ 80 GeV. For larger fields, we observe a mixed phase analogous to a type I superconductor, where a single macroscopic tube of the symmetric phase, parallel to H_Y, penetrates through the broken phase. For the magnetic fields and Higgs masses studied, we did not see indications of the expected Ambjorn-Olesen phase, which should be similar to a type II superconductor.
