High-T QCD and dimensional reduction: measuring the Debye mass

We study the high-temperature phase of SU(2) and SU(3) QCD using lattice simulations of an effective 3-dimensional SU(N) + adjoint Higgs -theory, obtained through dimensional reduction. We investigate the phase diagram of the 3D theory, and find that the high-T QCD phase corresponds to the metastable symmetric phase of the 3D theory. We measure the Debye screening mass m_D with gauge invariant operators; in particular we determine the O(g^2) and O(g^3) corrections to m_D. The corrections are seen to be large, modifying the standard power-counting hierarchy in high temperature QCD.

Non-perturbative Debye mass in finite T QCD

Employing a non-perturbative gauge invariant definition of the Debye screening mass m_D in the effective field theory approach to finite T QCD, we use 3d lattice simulations to determine the leading O(g^2) and to estimate the next-to-leading O(g^3) corrections to m_D in the high temperature region. The O(g^2) correction is large and modifies qualitatively the standard power-counting hierarchy picture of correlation lengths in high temperature QCD.

Dimensional Reduction and Hot QCD: Calculating the Debye Mass Non-Perturbatively

We study the phase diagram of the 3-dimensional SU(2) + adjoint Higgs theory, and investigate to what extent it can be used as an effective theory of the 4-dimensional high-T SU(2) QCD. The relation between the parameters in 4 and 3 dimensions is obtained through dimensional reduction. The high-T (deconfined) QCD phase corresponds to the symmetric phase of the 3-D Higgs theory. In the relevant parameter region the symmetric phase is not stable, but the metastability is strong enough to make precise measurements possible. In particular, we measure the Debye mass using a gauge invariant operator.

3d SU(N) + adjoint Higgs theory and finite temperature QCD

We study to what extent the three-dimensional SU(N)+adjoint Higgs theory can be used as an effective theory for finite temperature SU(N) gauge theory, with N=2,3. The parameters of the 3d theory are computed in 2-loop perturbation theory in terms of T/Lambda_MSbar,N,N_f. The perturbative effective potential of the 3d theory is computed to two loops for N=2. While the Z(N) symmetry probably driving the 4d confinement-deconfinement phase transition (for N_f=0) is not explicit in the effective Lagrangian, it is partly reinstated by radiative effects in the 3d theory. Lattice simulations in the 3d theory are carried out for N=2, and the static screening masses relevant for the high-temperature phase of the 4d theory are measured. In particular, we measure non-perturbatively the O(g^2 T) correction to the Debye screening mass. We find that non-perturbative effects are much larger in the SU(2) + adjoint Higgs theory than in the SU(2) + fundamental Higgs theory.

A Non-Perturbative Analysis of the Finite T Phase Transition in SU(2)xU(1) Electroweak Theory

The continuum 3d SU(2)$\times$U(1)+Higgs theory is an effective theory for a large class of 4d high-temperature gauge theories, including the minimal standard model and some of its supersymmetric extensions. We study the effects of the U(1) subgroup using lattice Monte Carlo techniques. When $g'^2/g^2$ is increased from the zero corresponding to pure SU(2)+Higgs theory, the phase transition gets stronger. However, the increase in the strength is close to what is expected perturbatively, and the qualitative features of the phase diagram remain the same as for $g'^2=0$. In particular, the first order transition still disappears for $m_H>m_{H,c}$. We measure the photon mass and mixing angle, and find that the mass vanishes in both phases within the statistical errors.

Which Chiral Symmetry is Restored in High Temperature QCD?

Sigma models for the high temperature phase transition in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) suggest that at high temperature the SU(N_f) x SU(N_f) chiral symmetry becomes exact, but the anomalous axial U(1) symmetry need not be restored. In numerical lattice simulations, traditional methods for detecting symmetry restoration have sought multiplets in the screening mass spectrum. However, these methods were imprecise and the results, so far, incomplete. With improved statistics and methodology, we are now able to offer evidence for a restoration of the SU(2) x SU(2) chiral symmetry just above the crossover, but not of the axial U(1) chiral symmetry.

Recent MILC spectrum results

We report on results from three spectrum calculations with staggered quarks: 1) a quenched calculation with the standard action for the gluons and quarks; 2) a quenched calculation with improved actions for both the gluons and quarks; and 3) a calculation with two flavors of dynamical quarks using the standard actions for the gluons and quarks.

Update on $f_B$

We describe the current status of the MILC collaboration computation of $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$, $f_D$, $f_{D_s}$ and their ratios. Progress over the past year includes: better statistics and plateaus at $β=6.52$ (quenched), $β=5.6$ ($N_F=2$) and $β=5.445$ ($N_F=2$), new runs with a wide range of dynamical quark masses at $β=5.5$ ($N_F=2$), an estimate of the systematic errors due to the chiral extrapolation, and an improved analysis which consistently takes into account both the correlations in the data at every stage and the systematic effects due to changing fitting ranges.

Assorted weak matrix elements involving the bottom quark

As part of a larger project to estimate the fB decay constant, we are recalculating fB_static using a variational smearing method in an effort to improve accuracy. Preliminary results for the static B_B parameter and HQET two point functions are also presented.

Finite T Electroweak Phase Transition on the Lattice

This talk reviews recent lattice results on the high $T$ electroweak phase transition. A remarkably accurate picture emerges: a) the transition is of first order for $m_H \lsim 80$GeV and vanishes for larger $m_H$; b) transition temperature, latent heat and interface tension are known, as well as c) the properties of the broken and symmetric phases. New developments in the sphaleron rate calculations are discussed.

Thermodynamics for two flavor QCD

We conclude our analysis of the N_t=6 equation of state for two flavor QCD, first described at last year's conference. We have obtained new runs at am_q=0.025 and improved runs at am_q=0.0125. The results are extrapolated to m_q=0, and we extract the speed of sound as well. We also present evidence for a restoration of the SU(2) X SU(2) chiral symmetry just above the crossover, but not of the axial U(1) chiral symmetry.

Is There a Hot Electroweak Phase Transition at $m_H\gsim m_W$?

We provide non-perturbative evidence for the fact that there is no hot electroweak phase transition at large Higgs masses, $m_H = 95$, 120 and 180 GeV. This means that the line of first order phase transitions separating the symmetric and broken phases at small $m_H$ has an end point $m_{H,c}$. In the minimal standard electroweak theory 70 GeV $<m_{H,c}<$ 95 GeV and most likely $m_{H,c} \approx 80$ GeV. If the electroweak theory is weakly coupled and the Higgs boson is found to be heavier than the critical value (which depends on the theory in question), cosmological remnants from the electroweak epoch are improbable.

The Electroweak Phase Transition: A Non-Perturbative Analysis

We study on the lattice the 3d SU(2)+Higgs model, which is an effective theory of a large class of 4d high temperature gauge theories. Using the exact constant physics curve, continuum ($V\to\infty, a\to 0$) results for the properties of the phase transition (critical temperature, latent heat, interface tension) are given. The 3-loop correction to the effective potential of the scalar field is determined. The masses of scalar and vector excitations are determined and found to be larger in the symmetric than in the broken phase. The vector mass is considerably larger than the scalar one, which suggests a further simplification to a scalar effective theory at large Higgs masses. The use of consistent 1-loop relations between 3d parameters and 4d physics permits one to convert the 3d simulation results to quantitatively accurate numbers for different physical theories, such as the Standard Model -- excluding possible nonperturbative effects of the U(1) subgroup -- for Higgs masses up to about 70 GeV. The applications of our results to cosmology are discussed.

The $N_t=6$ equation of state for two flavor QCD

We improve the calculation of the equation of state for two flavor QCD by simulating on $N_t=6$ lattices at appropriate values of the couplings for the deconfinement/chiral symmetry restoration crossover. For $am_q=0.0125$ the energy density rises rapidly to approximately 1 ${\rm GeV/fm^3}$ just after the crossover($m_π/m_ρ\approx 0.4$ at this point). Comparing with our previous result for $N_t=4$~\cite{eos}, we find large finite $N_t$ corrections as expected from free field theory on finite lattices. We also provide formulae for extracting the speed of sound from the measured quantities.

Results from 3D Electroweak Phase Transition Simulations

We study the phase transition in SU(2)-Higgs model on the lattice using the 3D dimensionally reduced formalism. The 3D formalism enables us to obtain highly accurate Monte Carlo results, which we extrapolate both to the infinite volume and to the continuum limit. Our formalism also provides for a well-determined and unique way to relate the results to the perturbation theory. We measure the critical temperature, latent heat and interface tension for Higgs masses up to 70 GeV.

Resonance Scattering on the Lattice with Non-Zero Total Momentum

Most hadronic particles are resonances: for example, the rho meson appears as a resonance in the elastic scattering of two pions. A method by Luescher enables one to measure the properties of the resonance particles from finite lattices. We present here a more general method which includes scattering processes where the total momentum of the particles is non-zero. The main advantage is that the resonance scattering can be observed in a considerably smaller spatial volume. We test the method with a simple 3+1 dimensional spin model, and find excellent agreement between the zero momentum and the non-zero momentum scattering sectors.

The continuum limit in the quenched approximation

Previous work at $6/g^2=5.7$ with quenched staggered quarks is extended with new calculations at 5.85 and 6.15 on lattices up to $32^3\times 64$. These calculations allow a more detailed study of extrapolation in quark mass, finite volume and lattice spacing than has heretofore been possible. We discuss how closely the quenched spectrum approaches that of the real world.

Two-flavor staggered-fermion thermodynamics at $N_t = 12$

We present new results in an ongoing study of the nature of the high temperature crossover in QCD with two light fermion flavors. These results are obtained with the conventional staggered fermion action at the smallest lattice spacing to date---approximately 0.1 fm. Of particular interest are a study of the temperature of the crossover, an important indicator of continuum scaling, a determination of the induced baryon charge and baryon susceptibility, used to study the dissolution of hadrons at the crossover, the scalar susceptibility, a signal for the appearance of soft modes, and the chiral order parameter, used to test models of critical behavior.
