Large Neutrino-Dark Matter Interactions: From Effective Field Theory to Ultraviolet Completions

We develop a general effective field theory (EFT) framework for neutrino-dark matter (DM) interactions, and apply it to systematically find all possible gauge-invariant ultraviolet (UV) completions at a given EFT operator dimension. Our goal here is to find simple UV-complete models that can realize potentially large neutrino-DM interactions, while being consistent with all existing theoretical and experimental constraints. We first construct the leading non-derivative operator basis for neutrino-DM scattering in a low-energy effective theory with neutrinos and DM (DM-LEFT), together with its gauge-invariant embedding in the Standard Model EFT (DM-SMEFT). We then construct all renormalizable tree-level UV completions that generate the relevant DM-SMEFT operators up to dimension-8 using a topology-based classification. Using this framework, we present minimal UV-complete models for different DM types that can yield effective neutrino-DM couplings up to several orders of magnitude larger than the Fermi coupling, while satisfying all constraints, most notably from neutrino mass and from the charged-lepton sector. This includes a pseudo-Dirac fermion DM realization in the scotogenic neutrino mass model and models of Majorana DM inspired by type-II and inverse seesaw-based neutrino mass models. Phenomenological implications for DM thermal relic abundance and direct detection prospects, as well as various cosmological and laboratory constraints on the model parameter space, are also analyzed.

Universal Seesaw Leptogenesis

We study the implications for leptogenesis in a class of left-right symmetric model, where all fermion masses are induced through the Universal Seesaw mechanism. Unlike conventional analyses, we do not use the decays of the neutrino embedded in the right-chiral lepton doublet, but rather those of the gauge-singlet mediators required for neutrino mass generation in the canonical Type-I seesaw. This model features a generalized parity symmetry, which is motivated by the solution to the strong $CP$ problem. Since this discrete symmetry doubles the fermionic degrees of freedom in this model, we can generate the required $CP$ violation in the heavy fermion decays with only a single generation of mediators. One of the distinct features of our scenario is that the bounds from thermalization or washout via gauge interactions typically encountered in the canonical left-right symmetric models do not apply here. Moreover, the heavy mediators can decay to both the left and the right-chiral neutrinos, leading to a cancellation in the resulting baryon asymmetry for decays above the left-right symmetry breaking scale. We discuss ways to avoid this cancellation and show that low scale left-right symmetry breaking above the current collider limits $v_R > 18$ TeV is viable. The right chiral neutrinos also obtain their masses from the seesaw mechanism, and the lightest one turns out to have a sub-eV scale mass. We find that its abundance is consistent with standard cosmology, and it acts as potentially observable dark radiation.

Universal Seesaw Pati-Salam Model with P for Strong CP

We develop a universal seesaw version of the Pati-Salam model wherein quarks and leptons of each family are unified into common multiplets transforming as $\{ψ_L(2,1,4)+ ψ_R(1,2,4)\}$ under the $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times SU(4)_c$ gauge symmetry. Parity symmetry is spontaneously broken in the model, which helps in solving the strong CP problem without the axion. The Higgs sector of the model is very simple, consisting of a single pair of $\{H_L(2,1,4)+ H_R(1,2,4)\}$ fields. Fermion masses arise through mixing of the chiral fermions with vector-like quarks and leptons contained in $(1,1,15)$ as well as $\{(1,1,10)_L+(1,1,10)_R\}$ multiplets via a universal seesaw mechanism. Consistency of such a spectrum with the observed quark and lepton masses is established. The parity solution to the strong CP problem is shown to be effective in this framework, although there are new loop contributions to $\barθ$, compared to the analogous left-right symmetric model, arising from color sextet and octet fermions, as well as from diagrams mediated by leptoquark bosons. We also find that, in this setup, although lepton number is broken, neutrino masses remain zero at the tree-level. Small and finite Majorana neutrino masses are induced via one-loop diagrams, which we analyze and show to be compatible with oscillation experiments.

Gravitational Wave Imprints of a High-Quality Axion and the Origin of Flavor Hierarchies

Axions, arising from an anomalous global Peccei-Quinn symmetry $U(1)_{\text{PQ}}$, offer a compelling solution to the strong CP problem but are vulnerable to Planck-suppressed operators. Gauged abelian flavor symmetries $U(1)_F$, invoked to explain the flavor hierarchies via the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, can naturally shield the axion from such effects, yielding an accidental high-quality flavored axion with unit domain wall number. Such constructions predict two complementary signatures: (i) flavor-changing neutral currents from $K\toπa$ decays, typically associated with high flavor scales $Λ_{\text{FN}}\gtrsim f_a$, and (ii) stochastic Gravitational Waves (GWs) sourced by the evolution and decay of gauged flavonic and axionic cosmic-string networks. In addition, global axionic strings can efficiently radiate axions, potentially accounting for the observed dark matter relic abundance. We show that the resulting characteristic plateau--valley structure in the GW spectrum provides a distinctive and powerful probe of high-quality flavored axion dark matter models, complementary to low-energy flavor experiments.

TeV Scale Quark-Lepton Unification

We propose a quark-lepton symmetric Pati-Salam (PS) model based on the gauge group $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times SU(4)_C$ with an $E_6$-inspired particle spectrum which naturally accommodates a multi-TeV leptoquark gauge boson $X_μ(3,1,\frac{2}{3})$. A softly broken $Z_2$ symmetry plays a crucial role in realizing this scenario, under which the Standard Model (SM) fermions are even, while new vector-like fermions present in the model are odd. A notable feature of this model is that the PS gauge boson $X_μ$ itself is $Z_2$-odd, causing it to couple exclusively between SM fermions and the vector-like fermions, except in the right-handed down-quark sector, where mixing is induced by the soft breaking of $Z_2$. This structure leads to helicity suppression of tree-level meson decays mediated by $X_μ$, with helicity-unsuppressed contributions arising only via one-loop diagrams. We show that $X_μ$ can be as light as 1.1 TeV while being compatible with all flavor-violating constraints. However, mass relations among the $(W'^\pm_μ, Z'_μ, X_μ)$ gauge bosons push the $X_μ$ mass limit up to 4.3 TeV from the stringent LHC bounds on the $Z^\prime$ mass. This comparatively low PS-breaking scale opens up promising collider opportunities for probing the leptoquark gauge boson, as well as the distinctive signature of vector-like down-type quarks carrying an unusual baryon number of $2/3$. The model can be further tested via lepton flavor-violating processes induced by the leptoquark gauge boson, such as $μ\to e γ$, $μ\to e e e$, and $μ$-$e$ conversion in nuclei. Neutrino masses arise in the model through dimension-seven operators at tree-level, as well as from dimension-five operators via one-loop diagrams.

Double Bangs at IceCube as a Window to the Neutrino Mass Origin

Neutrino oscillation parameters are subject to renormalization group (RG) evolution, just like all couplings and masses of Standard Model (SM) particles. Within the SM extended with three massive neutrinos, it is well known that RG running effects in the neutrino sector are small. However, the RG running of the elements of the leptonic mixing (PMNS) matrix below the electroweak symmetry breaking scale can be enhanced in the presence of light neutrinophilic new particles. In this work, using a particular low-scale neutrino mass model as an example, and by taking into account both atmospheric and astrophysical neutrino fluxes, we show that RG running of the PMNS matrix can lead to an increased number of high-energy tau neutrino events at IceCube. This excess manifests as an increased number of spatially displaced showers called ``double bangs". We find that the number of double bangs induced by new physics through RG effects can be comparable to that arising from SM interactions of astrophysical tau neutrinos.

Fermion Mass Hierarchy and a High Quality Axion From Gauged U(1) Flavor Symmetry

We present a class of models based on a gauged $U(1)_F$ flavor symmetry that explains the hierarchical structure of fermion masses and mixings via the Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism, while also solving the strong CP problem by the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism. A global $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry with a nonzero QCD anomaly emerges accidentally in this setup as a byproduct of the gauged $U(1)_F$ symmetry. The resulting axion is shown to be of high quality, with the axion potential safeguarded against quantum gravity corrections by the gauge symmetry. Three models, which are generalizations of the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky (DFSZ) axion model, are presented realizing this idea. The right-handed neutrino mass scale is identified as the Froggatt-Nielsen scale in these models. We present explicit UV completions of the FN sectors of these models and show that they preserve the high quality of the axion. In these models, the axion acts as a flavon field, leading to testable predictions in flavor-changing decays of neutral mesons. The axion also serves as the dark matter of the universe with the right amount of relic abundance without causing cosmological domain wall problems. Baryon asymmetry of the universe is realized via leptogenesis which is calculable in these models and found to be of the right order of magnitude.

Lepton Number Violation at the LHC in Radiative Neutrino Mass Models with Leptoquarks

We investigate the prospects for observing lepton number violation (LNV) by two units, $|ΔL| = 2$, at the LHC within the leptoquark variant of the Zee Model, where Majorana neutrino masses arise radiatively at one-loop. The model features an $SU(2)_L$ doublet and singlet leptoquarks, whose interactions produce a distinctive same-sign dilepton plus jets signature, $pp \to \ell^{\pm}\ell'^{\pm} + \text{jets}$. Taking into account current experimental constraints, we identify the dominant production channels for this LNV signal and perform a detailed collider analysis. We find that the HL-LHC can probe leptoquark masses up to $m_{\rm LQ} \sim 1.5~\mathrm{TeV}$ with this process. Observation of this signal would provide a direct test of LNV and would unambiguously establish the Majorana nature of neutrinos.

One Phase to Rule Them All: Spontaneous CP Violation and Leptogenesis in SO(10)

We present a renormalizable $SO(10)$ grand unified theory with a minimal Yukawa sector consisting of a $126_H$, a real $10_H$ and a real $120_H$, where $CP$ violation has a spontaneous origin. We show that the Yukawa sector in this setup, which consists of only 19 real parameters, is capable of simultaneously reproducing the observed fermion masses and mixings, including neutrino oscillations, as well as the baryon asymmetry of the Universe via thermal leptogenesis. In this framework, $CP$ is spontaneously broken when a $CP$-odd Higgs field $54_H$, used for GUT symmetry breaking, acquires a non-zero vacuum expectation value. All $CP$-violating phases, including the Dirac phases $δ_\mathrm{CKM}$ and $δ_\mathrm{PMNS}$, the neutrino Majorana phases, as well as those responsible for leptogenesis, arise solely from a single complex parameter in the Higgs potential. The proposed minimal setup predicts a normal ordering of neutrino masses, with the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ preferred in the first octant and the leptonic $δ_{\mathrm{PMNS}}$ lying in the range $(-38^\circ,\, +31^\circ)$. The fermion fits in our scenario further yield a strongly hierarchical mass spectrum for the three right-handed neutrinos, $(M_1,\,M_2,\,M_3) \sim \left(10^{5},\, 10^{12},\, 5\cdot 10^{14}\right)~\mathrm{GeV}$, which is shown to result in successful $N_2$-dominated leptogenesis, consistent with current cosmological data.

Dirac Leptogenesis in Left-Right Symmetric Models

Left-right symmetric models which employ a generalized seesaw mechanism to generate quark and charged lepton masses are known to solve the strong CP problem via parity symmetry, without the need for the axion. These models lead to naturally light Dirac neutrinos with their masses arising through radiatve corrections. In this work, we show how baryogenesis via Dirac leptogenesis can be implemented in this framework. A pair of left-right symmetric scalar doublets $ϕ_{L,R}$ carrying $(B-L)$ charge of $3$ is introduced for this purpose, which preserves the parity solution to the strong CP problem. Small neutrino masses are generated through one-loop diagrams mediated by these scalars. The decay of vector-like leptons ($E_i$) involved in the seesaw mechanism to generate charged lepton masses, $E_i \rightarrow \overlineν_{jR} \,ϕ_R^-$, creates a right-handed neutrino ($ν_{R}$) asymmetry, while preserving total lepton number. The compensating lepton asymmetry is converted to baryon asymmetry via electroweak sphalerons. We show that for a large range of model parameters successful baryogenesis can be realized, with the $W_R^\pm$ gauge boson mass of order $10^{11}$ GeV.

Ultraviolet Completion of a Two-loop Neutrino Mass Model

The Zee-Babu model is an economical framework for neutrino mass generation as two-loop quantum corrections. In this work, we present a UV completion of this model by embedding it into an $SU(5)$ unified framework. Interestingly, we find that loop-induced contributions to neutrino masses arising from colored scalars are just as important as those from color-neutral ones. These new states, which are required from gauge coupling unification and neutrino oscillation data to have masses below $\mathcal{O}(10^3)$ TeV, may be accessible to future collider experiments. Additionally, the model can be probed in proton decay searches. Our Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis of model parameters shows a high likelihood of observable $p \rightarrow e^+ π^0$ decay signal in the first decade of Hyper-Kamiokande operation. The model predicts a vector-like down-type quark at the TeV scale, utilized for realistic fermion mass generation and gauge coupling unification. The model is UV-complete in the sense that it is a unified theory which is realistic and asymptotically free that can be extrapolated to the Planck scale.

Accidental Peccei-Quinn Symmetry From Gauged U(1) and a High Quality Axion

We construct explicit models that solve the axion quality problem originating from quantum gravitational effects. The general strategy we employ is to supplement the Standard Model and its grand unified extensions by an anomaly-free axial $U(1)_a$ symmetry that is gauged. We show that for several choices of the gauge quantum numbers of the fermions, this setup leads to an accidental $U(1)$ symmetry with a QCD anomaly which can be identified as the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry that solves the strong CP problem. The $U(1)_a$ gauge symmetry controls the amount of explicit PQ symmetry violation induced by quantum gravity, resulting in a high quality axion. We present two classes of models employing this strategy. In the first class (models I and II), the axial $U(1)_a$ gauge symmetry acts on vector-like quarks leading to an accidental KSVZ-type axion. The second class (model III) is based on $SO(10)$ grand unified theory extended by a gauged $U(1)_a$ symmetry that leads to a hybrid KSVZ--DFSZ type axion. The couplings of the axion to the electron and the nucleon are found to be distinct in this class of hybrid models from those in the KSVZ and DFSZ models, when the axion is identified as the dark matter of the universe, which can be used to test these models. Interestingly, all models presented here have domain wall number of one, which is free of cosmological problems that typically arise in axion models.

Hybrid SO(10) Axion Model Without Quality Problem

Invisible axion models that solve the strong CP problem via the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism typically have a quality problem that arises from quantum gravity effects which violate all global symmetries. These models therefore require extreme fine-tuning of parameters for consistency. We present a new solution to the quality problem in a unified $SO(10)\times U(1)_a$ gauge model, where $U(1)_a$ is an anomaly free axial gauge symmetry. PQ symmetry emerges as an accidental symmetry in this setup, which admits a PQ breaking scale as large as $4\times 10^{11}$ GeV, allowing for the axion to be the cosmological dark matter. We call this a hybrid axion model due to its unique feature that it interpolates between the popular KSVZ and DFSZ axion models. Its predictions for the experimentally measurable axion couplings to the nucleon and electron are distinct from those of the usual models, a feature that can be used to test it. Furthermore, the model has no domain wall problem and it provides a realistic and predictive framework for fermion masses and mixings.

Chiral dark matter and radiative neutrino masses from gauged U(1) symmetry

We propose a class of dark matter models based on a chiral $U(1)$ gauge symmetry acting on a dark sector. The chiral $U(1)$ protects the masses of the dark sector fermions, and also guarantees the stability of the dark matter particle by virtue of an unbroken discrete $\mathcal{Z}_N$ gauge symmetry. We identify 38 such $U(1)$ models which are descendants of a chiral $SU(3) \times SU(2)$ gauge symmetry, consisting of a minimal set of fermions with simple $U(1)$ charge assignments. We show how these models can also be utilized to generate small Majorana neutrino masses radiatively via the scotogenic mechanism with the dark sector particles circulating inside loop diagrams. We further explore the phenomenology of the simplest model in this class, which admits a Majorana fermion, Dirac fermion or a scalar field to be the dark matter candidate, and show the consistency of various scenarios with constraints from relic density and direct detection experiments.

Leptogenesis in SO(10) with Minimal Yukawa sector

In prior studies, a very minimal Yukawa sector within the $SO(10)$ Grand Unified Theory framework has been identified, comprising of Higgs fields belonging to a real $10_H$, a real $120_H$, and a $\overline{126}_H$ dimensional representations. In this work, within this minimal framework, we have obtained fits to fermion masses and mixings while successfully reproducing the cosmological baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis. The right-handed neutrino ($N_i$) mass spectrum obtained from the fit is strongly hierarchical, suggesting that $B-L$ asymmetry is dominantly produced from $N_2$ dynamics while $N_1$ is responsible for erasing the excess asymmetry. With this rather constrained Yukawa sector, fits are obtained both for normal and inverted ordered neutrino mass spectra, consistent with leptonic CP-violating phase $δ_\mathrm{CP}$ indicated by global fits of neutrino oscillation data, while also satisfying the current limits from neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. In particular, the the leptonic CP-violating phase has a preference to be in the range $δ_\mathrm{CP}\simeq (230-300)^\circ$. We also show the consistency of the framework with gauge coupling unification and proton lifetime limits.

Gravitational Wave Signatures of a Chiral Fermion Dark Matter Model

Theories in which the dark matter (DM) candidate is a fermion transforming chirally under a gauge symmetry are attractive, as the gauge symmetry would protect the DM mass. In such theories, the universe would have undergone a phase transition at early times that generated the DM mass upon spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry. In this paper, we explore the gravitational wave signals of a simple such theory based on an $\mathrm{SU}(2)_\mathrm{D}$ dark sector with a dark isospin-$3/2$ fermion serving as the DM candidate. This is arguably the simplest chiral theory possible. The scalar sector consists of a dark isospin-$3$ multiplet which breaks the $\mathrm{SU}(2)_\mathrm{D}$ gauge symmetry and also generates the DM mass. We construct the full thermal potential of the model and identify regions of parameter space which lead to detectable gravitational wave signals, arising from a strong first-order $\mathrm{SU}(2)_\mathrm{D}$ phase transition, in various planned space-based interferometers, while also being consistent with dark matter relic abundance. Bulk of the parameter space exhibiting detectable gravitational wave signals in the model also has large WIMP-nucleon scattering cross sections, $σ_{\rm SI}$, which could be probed in upcoming direct detection experiments.

Predictive Dirac Neutrino Spectrum with Strong CP Solution in $\pmb{SU(5)_L \times SU(5)_R}$ Unification

We develop a grand unified theory of matter and forces based on the gauge symmetry $SU(5)_L\times SU(5)_R$ with parity interchanging the two factor groups. Our main motivation for such a construction is to realize a minimal GUT embedding of left-right symmetric models that provide a parity solution to the strong CP problem without the axion. We show how the gauge couplings unify with an intermediate gauge symmetry $SU(3)_{cL}\times SU(2)_{2L}\times U(1)_{L}\times SU(5)_R$, and establish its consistency with proton decay constraints. The model correctly reproduces the observed fermion masses and mixings and leads to naturally light Dirac neutrinos with their Yukawa couplings suppressed by a factor $M_I/M_G$, the ratio of the intermediate scale to the GUT scale. We call this mechanism type II-Dirac seesaw. Furthermore, the model predicts $δ_{CP} = \pm (130.4 \pm 1.2)^\circ $ and $m_{ν_1} = (4.8-8.4)$ meV for the Dirac CP phase and the lightest neutrino mass. We demonstrate how the model solves the strong CP problem via parity symmetry.

A realistic theory of $\mathrm{E_{6}}$ unification through novel intermediate symmetries

We propose a non-supersymmetric $\mathrm{E}_{6}$ GUT with the scalar sector consisting of $\mathbf{650}\oplus \mathbf{351'} \oplus \mathbf{27}$. Making use of the first representation for the initial symmetry breaking to an intermediate stage, and the latter two representations for second-stage breaking to the Standard Model and a realistic Yukawa sector, this theory represents the minimal $\mathrm{E}_{6}$ GUT that proceeds through one of the intermediate stages that are novel compared to $\mathrm{SU(5)}$ or $\mathrm{SO}(10)$ GUT: trinification $\mathrm{SU}(3)_C\times \mathrm{SU}(3)_L\times \mathrm{SU}(3)_R$, $\mathrm{SU}(6)\times \mathrm{SU}(2)$ and flipped $\mathrm{SO}(10)\times\mathrm{U}(1)$. We analyze these possibilities under the choice of vacuum that preserves a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ ``spinorial parity'', which disentangles the chiral and vector-like fermions of $\mathrm{E}_{6}$ and provides a dark matter candidate in the form of a (scalar) inert doublet. Three cases are shown to consistently unify under the extended survival hypothesis (with minimal fine-tuning): trinification symmetry $\mathrm{SU}(3)_C\times \mathrm{SU}(3)_L\times \mathrm{SU}(3)_R$ with either $LR$ or $CR$ parity, and $\mathrm{SU}(6)_{CR}\times\mathrm{SU}(2)_L$. Although the successful cases give a large range for proton lifetime estimates, all of them include regions consistent with current experimental bounds and within reach of forthcoming experiments. The scenario investigated in this paper essentially represents the unique (potentially) viable choice in the class of $\mathrm{E}_{6}$ GUTs proceeding through a novel-symmetry intermediate stage, since non-minimal alternatives seem to be intrinsically non-perturbative.
